A few weeks had passed since Carla had dropped a major bombshell on Peter and told him she was having his baby. Carla had the 12 week scan in a couple of days and was contemplating on asking Peter if he wanted to accompany her. She was hesistant due to the fact he hadn't actually said he wanted to be there for her and the baby, not that she expected him in the slightest.
Peter had spent the last few weeks in a complete turmoil. He knew the decision he needed to make was to be truthfully honest with Leanne and be a part of his baby's life but something was stopping him. He wanted the easy option, the option where nobody would know and he would pretend as though he wasn't having a baby, but would that be the easy option in the end?
"So does Peter know you've got the scan coming up? Michelle said quietly as her and Carla strolled down the street. Carla sighed.
"No, I haven't told him… I'm not sure if I should or not." Carla admitted as she practically dragged her feet as she walked.
"I think you should at least tell him and then it's up to him to decide… If not, i'll be more than happy to come with you so you're not alone." Michelle said and Carla gave a small smile in repsonse.
"Thanks 'Chelle." Carla said as they made their way up the steps into the factory.
That same afternoon while Carla was out and about, she saw Peter standing outside of the bookies having a smoke. She cautiously approached him and he put out his cigarette knowing that in her condition she didn't need to be around second hand smoke. "Have you got a minute?" She asked.
"Uh… Yeah." He nodded as he stepped into the shop and Carla followed him. "Is everything alright?" He asked.
"Yeah, everything's fine… It's just have the first scan in a couple of days and you're more than welcome to come if you like." Carla said as she looked at him.
In Carla's perfect world, Peter would leave Leanne right now. He would choose her and love her and their baby but deep down she knew he wasn't going to and that was something which kept her awake at night.
Peter wasn't expecting Carla to ask him this if he was being honest. He'd been avoiding her since she'd told him she was pregnant, because he was burying his head in the sand. As he stood there in front of Carla he could see that she was internally begging him to say yes.
"Oh, okay." He said a little awkwardly. "If only you're okay with it." Carla nodded.
"I wouldn't have asked otherwise." She responsed and with that she decided to leave him to it.
The next two days felt like hell for Peter and now he was questioning why agreed to this. He wasn't sure he was mentally strong enough for it which made him firmly decide that he couldn't be a Dad to another baby. In his head he'd already ruined Simon, what innocent baby deserves him for a Father?
Carla on the other hand had barely thought about Peter because as the day rolled around for the scan she was more worried that there would be something wrong with the baby. Her and Michelle were currently sitting in the office if the factory because the appointment wasn't until the afternoon. "Honeslty Carla, the first scan is so special." Michelle said thinking back all those years ago when she was pregnant. Carla however was deep in thought.
"You know I never wanted kids." Carla said as she bit her lip. "It doesn't seem fair somehow… There are couples out there who can't have a baby of their own. Then there's me who had an affair with a now married man and ended up, up the duff." She mused.
"You're not the first person to fall head first into an unplanned pregnancy and I can assure you, you're not going to be the last." Michelle said with a smile.
"What if I'm a rubbish mum?" Carla
fretted. "We all know what my mother was like, who's to say I won't be the same?"
"You are not your mother and you never will be." Michelle assured. "Now, you better leave or you'll miss your appointment."
Carla was sitting on a chair in the waiting room, waiting for her name to be called. Her leg was bouncing up and down with anxiety and Peter was nowhere to be seen. She felt a deep sinking feeling in her tummy, thinking that he wasn't going to show up. As she waited she looked around and saw many happy couples sitting together, clearly excited to see their baby. She felt saddened looking at them. "Is anybody sitting here?" A voice said snapping Carla from her thoughts. There was a younger woman standing before her asking if the seat next to her was free.
"No, it's all yours." Carla said giving the woman a small smile. She looked much further into her pregnancy than Carla was because Carla still didn't even look it.
"So i'm assuming you're expecting." The woman said making conversation. Carla wasn't in the mood to talk but she welcomed the distraction.
"Yeah, I am." Carla replied.
"So are you married?" She asked. Carla raised her eyebrows at the slightly personal question. "Oh, i'm sorry, how rude of me to ask that... My name is Jenna." She then said as she saw Carla's facial expression to that question.
"No, I'm not… I'm Carla." Carla answered. "I'm not even in a relationship with the father of my baby."
"Neither am I… He dumped me when I found out and told him… Was that the same with you?" Jenna asked. Carla shook her head.
"We weren't ever properly together… He had a fiancée who he's now married to." Carla said and Jenna raised her eyebrows as she was a little shocked to hear that. Their conversation however was soo cut short was Jenna was called in for her appointment.
Carla started to get angry with Peter because he told her he would be there yet he wasn't. "Carla Connor?" The nurse called. Carla hesitated slightly before getting up, as she looked down the corridor in came Peter.
"I'm so sorry i'm late." He puffed as he'd clearly ran all the way from the car park. Carla felt nothing short of relieved to see Peter. The reason why Peter had almost missed the appointment was because he contemplated not going. He was coming up with the best way to tell Carla he couldn't do this but something in his mind told him he needed to be there.
"You're not late, you're just in time." The very friendly nurse said. "Would you both like to come in?"
They both entered the room and Carla did as she was instructed by laying down on the bed and rolling up her top and Peter sat in the seat next to her. "This is going to feel a little cold at first." The nurse said and Carla shuddered slightly at the sensation.
Is everything alright?" Carla asked nervously. The nurse smiled.
"I'm just getting into position, it can be hard to find them when they're this little." She said as she looked at the monitor. The room was then filled with the sound of a fluttering heart beat. "If you look here, there's the legs, head and arms." She pointed. Carla and Peter were in awe, neither of them could even say anything. Carla had let a few tears spill down her cheeks which she quickly wiped away.
"But everything's okay?" Peter asked. He knew coming here would be dangerous because there right in front of his eyes was his baby.
"Everything looks perfect." Carla and Peter felt nothing short of relieved. "So, from these measurements, you're due date will fall on the 10th August."
The nurse then went over a few more things with Carla to make sure she was also in good health and soon enough Carla and Peter were leaving the hospital. "Do you think, we should maybe talk?" Peter asked knowing there was a lot that they needed to discuss.
The both of them ended up in a cafe near the hospital. "So what've you got to tell me?" Carla asked as she sat opposite him. Peter took a deep breath. "Actually let me guess… You want to tell me that, you've chosen to not tell Leanne and pretend as though this isn't happening, am I right?" Carla asked raising her eyebrows. Peter remained silent because Carla had taken the words from out of his mouth.
"It's not a decision I've made lightly." He said. Carla sighed.
"That's okay because I don't have any intention of telling this baby or anything else for that matter that you're the father… I need to be stress free and to put this baby first and I know that you're not going to be a reliable person in their life… You didn't even have Simon when he was a baby." Carla said. "So from this point forward, this baby is mine, and only mine." Carla said firmly.
