Yui POV
As it turned out, Eliza was in fact not capable of first aid. I immediately summoned a bubble around myself to slow down the bleeding, and buy some time. I gathered pieces of severed cloth from the earlier fight and used them to create a makeshift bandage.
I pressed it against my wound, feeling it sting as I applied pressure. Blood seeped through the cloth, staining it dark red. I dispelled the bubble now that the wound looked stable. It would hopefully clot soon. I shifted the bubble to accelerate time instead.
Although I had sped up the bleeding, it would be largely negated due to the gauze. My natural rate of healing should also be sped up, which was crucial as if it didn't heal fast enough people would start asking questions like ""Why do you suddenly have a stab wound?" My civilian identity would be worthless at that point.
Although the pain was still sharp, I felt a bit more confident now that my wound was tended to. I looked towards Eliza, who was still cowering in the corner, her eyes wide with fear.
"I don't suppose you have any proper medical supplies around here?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady despite the pain.
Eliza's eyes darted around the room before she shook her head. "N-No, I'm sorry. We don't keep anything like that here."
Of course a gang involved in drug trafficking wouldn't be concerned about treating wounds. I let out a frustrated sigh. I guess my budget first-aid would have to do for now. Hopefully the acceleration would do its job.
Now, what to do with Eliza. She clearly wasn't going to stick with the Iron Ring, since her association with me would mean that Bloody Princess would torture her to death the moment she found her. I could just do away with her like I had planned earlier, but after learning how much this single warehouse made in a year, I had gotten an idea.
"You're the one who keeps everything running here, aren't you?" I asked, leaning forward with a concerned expression. "Handling all the administration?"
Eliza nodded, looking both surprised and unsure. "Yeah, that's me. Why?"
I sighed, shaking my head. "Eliza, you're too good for this place. You're stuck in a role that doesn't do your talents justice. I've seen the way they treat you. You deserve so much more."
Her eyes flickered with a mix of emotions — doubt, curiosity, and a glimmer of hope. I had her hooked, and I needed to reel her in carefully.
"Imagine what you could do if you were in a place that truly recognized your skills," I continued, my tone sympathetic. "A place where your efforts weren't wasted on the likes of the Iron Ring. You could be part of something bigger, something that brings about real change."
Eliza's brows furrowed as she processed my words. "What can I even do? I'm just an administrator."
A smile played on my lips, and I reached out to gently rest my hand on her shoulder. "Join me, Eliza. Work with me, and we can take down organizations like the Iron Ring. We can use your skills to manage things on the inside while making sure the right people get the help they need."
"But… you're a villain, aren't you?"
Fuck, I didn't think I'd get this far. Random bullshit go! "Yes, I may be a villain. However, I am only one because of the ineffectiveness of the PRT."
I switched to a more sincere tone, continuing the rest of my monologue. "The PRT has largely failed as an institution in Brockton Bay, only protecting the rich areas and constantly allowing villains to get away. That's why it's necessary to employ more… forceful means to evict the gangs out of Brockton Bay for good."
Eliza stared at me, a contemplative expression on her face. I could see the gears turning in her mind as she weighed her options.
She finally spoke out in a hushed tone, "So, your goal is to kick all the gangs out of Brockton? Build a better Bay for us all?"
No, it wasn't. "Yes, it is. I'm tired of Brockton being known as 'that one racist city'."
I was actually being honest in my desire to get rid of the gangs. After learning how much merely a single location had made, I finally had a short term goal in mind. To pull a Coil, or I suppose a Skitter, and unify the Brockton Bay underworld.
My train of thought was interrupted as Eliza continued her questions. She bit her lip, uncertainty written across her features. "But what about the heroes? Won't they come after us?"
I leaned in slightly, my tone conspiratorial. "The heroes aren't as effective as you might think. The PRT has its hands full with the bigger threats, and that leaves room for people like us to operate in the shadows. We won't be their top priority."
She looked down at her hands, deep in thought. Finally, after what felt like an eternity, she looked up at me with a determined expression. "Okay, I'm in."
Perfect. I had recruited my first subordinate. Granted, it was a random girl from a drug warehouse, but beggars can't be choosers. Besides, she had an iron stomach to watch that fight without trying to flee.
As for her duty, she could handle administration. After all, she did help manage this relatively large warehouse. "You made the right choice. For now, focus on transforming this operation. We aren't going to be dealing drugs. Instead, this will be our headquarters for the foreseeable future."
She took a seat in a nearby chair, pensive. "Well, the ABB and E88 aren't that interested in the train yards, so we should be fine on that front. However, won't Bloody Princess and Luminous Prince try and take it back?"
"No, probably not. Gangs need more than parahumans to hold a location, and I've dealt with many of the members who used to operate here. Of course, our lovely royal duo will definitely attack us, but I was already planning on eliminating them."
She responded in a confused tone. "Didn't you lose to them? I thought we should avoid them for now."
In a tone that left no room for argument, I said "First of all, that was a draw and I refuse to hear otherwise."
I continued "But, I think I've gotten a good handle on their capabilities. I already have a plan for our next encounter. For now, we should focus on expanding our influence."
Eliza rolled her eyes. "Right, draw. I'll get started on the warehouse upgrades. A couple of my friends have also been looking to escape the Iron Ring. I'll try to get their help."
"Alright. I'll meet you here every night and we can discuss our progress."
With that, we headed our separate ways. I needed to make my way back to my house, and prepare for the next day at Arcadia. I had carefully created an image of a driven yet introverted student who never spoke unless necessary.
When searching for a civilian identity for Invictus, most would look for recently traumatized individuals who could possibly have had a trigger event. Luckily for me, my own trigger was solely mental and completely unnoticeable to those around myself. Thus, as long as I didn't make any erratic changes in behavior, I would likely fly under the radar.
Of course, with someone like Coil around, it was impossible to tell for sure what my enemies might know. He may have already discovered my identity in another timeline and kept it to himself, plotting to take me under his thumb like Tattletale or simply ordering a hit later. I shuddered at the thought of being able to do nothing as he ordered hit after hit without me noticing until one succeeded.
I hated the thought of such a severe information disadvantage. However, I was probably being paranoid. Brockton Bay had nearly 120 capes, a far larger number than I'd assumed from reading Worm. I hadn't done anything to stick out so far, and claiming the warehouse for myself would at best put me at the level of all the other petty criminals in the views of the PRT and Coil.
That being said, I was going to get on Coil's radar soon. Since I wasn't selling pot, I would have to enter the same "markets" as Coil, namely protection rackets and gambling. In this regard, he was far better equipped than I was, having an army of tinkertech-equipped mercenaries and a literal evil lair.
Although my position in the train yards could be lucrative as it was near a large train station, it was no match for Coil's dominance over his market segments. Finally, Coil had the "backing" of Cauldron, being their chosen Guinea pig for the Terminus project. While I hoped that they would just write the project off as a failure if I intervened and defeated Coil, I could never be sure with Contessa.
I ended my mini-soliloquy as I entered my apartment and promptly collapsed into bed. Although I didn't require sleep, my body had several aches from seemingly every joint and my muscles were exhausted. Thus, I ignored the constant "alert" feeling I had as a Noctis cape, and simply lied on the bed, thinking about nothing in particular. Slowly, I drifted off into a deep sleep.

Yui POV, 5 Hours Later
I woke up feeling the exact same as I did when I fell asleep—awake and attentive. It was a great improvement from my coffee-fueled sleepwalking as a lawyer. Hooray for superpowers!
I turned to look at the morning light coming through my windows, squinting as my eyes adjusted to the brightness. With practiced ease, I put on the guise of Yui, the diligent student, as I organized my backpack, reviewed my notes, and put on my uniform.
I made my way to school on autopilot, my mind pondering more important matters while my body went through the routine motions of my civilian life. My first class was Biology, though it didn't matter much as I followed the noble tradition created by past Yui to completely ignore class and focus on maintaining multiple bubbles at once.
While I had found the subject matter fascinating in my previous life, it definitely fell short of the wonders of cape life, even ignoring the fact that I already knew all the material.
As Mr. Lawson droned on about hydrogen bonds, my attention was split between the lecture and my own thoughts. I toggled my awareness between the classroom and the delicate bubbles I was maintaining elsewhere. One bubble was tucked away in a hidden corner of the school's roof, while another was concealed beneath a park bench a block away.
My power was actually pretty overpowered if you looked at it objectively. I had no limits on the range and quantity of my bubbles, and they appeared almost instantly unlike Labyrinth's creations. However, it didn't work like that in practice. I had a "soft limit" on my bubbles, as the sheer computational capacity needed to maintain more than 3 bubbles was beyond me.
I also couldn't create bubbles further than around 30 feet from me without giving them all my focus.
They got harder to maintain the farther away I got from them. It wasn't really a training issue, though I was trying to increase my limit by practicing. Although it had eased the burden, it was far from the amount required to create another bubble. I had a suspicion that without shard help or a drastic brain operation from the likes of Bonesaw or Panacea, I would be stuck at 3 bubbles for a while.
"Yui, why don't you come up here and answer this question?"
I snapped out of my thoughts and looked at the whiteboard. A simple problem—at least for an adult in the body of a child like me.
I grabbed a marker and began to illustrate as I explained "The reason the pan is hot while the water is lukewarm is that water has a higher specific heat than iron. Specific heat is the heat required to raise the temperature of 1g of a substance by 1 degree Celsius. Thus, it takes more heat to change the temperature of water than the iron pan, making the pan feel hot and the water lukewarm."
The teacher actually clapped his hands together at my explanation. "Fantastic job as always, Yui. You may return to your seat."
I nodded and returned to my practice. I had mastered the art of pretending to pay attention while focusing on something completely different. As I could answer most of the questions, I earned the reputation of a hard-worker to the teachers and a know-it-all to the students.
Not that I cared what a bunch of edgy teenagers thought of me. Maintaining a good academic performance was just the best way to get teachers off my back as well as fulfill my inner asian. I had made it a bit of a game to get the most perfect scores I could, like a maxed out account choosing the new game plus option.
The bell rang out, interrupting my thoughts once again. I quickly concealed my grimace and headed towards the cafeteria to eat. In the hallway, I was suddenly stopped by one Victoria Dallon, now with a wrinkly brown haired puppy girl following her—Amy Dallon, better known as Panacea.
Victoria looked excited to see me. "I tried out that game you suggested, it was really fun! My sister also liked it a lot, so we could talk about it."
Amy rolled her eyes and extended her hand. "Hello, I'm Amy Dallon, nice to meet you. Sorry about her kidnapping you, but nobody can stop her once she gets an idea stuck in the empty hole inside her skull."
I moved my hand forward and was about to accept her handshake when a surge of panic struck me. I instantly dispelled all my other bubbles—a bad habit of mine when I felt fear. I placed an extremely small bubble around myself to think. She could definitely notice the wound on my back; it was still healing, after all. If that was suspect, my active Corona Pollentia would reveal my parahuman status.
After that, it'd only take a cursory search into which capes fought blade wielders recently and my civilian identity would be toast. While she would nominally have to uphold the unwritten rules, could I really trust her? Both capes I had fought so far had almost no regard for the rules, and Panacea was definitely in the enemy camp for now as she was a hero.
No, I realized. I could not trust her. In fact, I couldn't trust anyone not explicitly on my side. I was about to simply ignore her attempt for a handshake, regardless of the flack it might get me, when my phone rang, it's ringtone feeling like a heavenly chime to my ears. Scion, Contessa, Simurgh, whoever I should be praying to, thank you.
I pivoted my extended hand backwards to grab my phone and said "One sec, I gotta take this. You guys can take a seat at a table, I'll join you later."
Victoria looked like she was about to argue, but Amy interrupted. "Alright, no problem."
As Amy and Victoria walked away, I headed to a secluded classroom. I picked up the phone and I was greeted with Faultline's voice. "Hello, Yui. I'm going to need to talk with you about what you did last night, but I know you're busy right now. Just stop by after you're done with school."
Before I could respond, she abruptly hung up. Well, that wasn't ominous. Not ominous at all. Oh well, that's for future Yui to deal with. Right now, I have to deal with Panacea and Glory Girl. It wasn't procrastination; I was collecting vital information from the enemy!
My suspicion was that Faultline was unhappy I could have possibly gotten her crew implicated by attacking a gang. Shelving that thought to the back of my mind, I headed back to the cafeteria.
I settled into the chair, my posture straight and my expression composed. I couldn't afford any slip-ups in this conversation. Panacea and Glory Girl were heroes, and I couldn't fully trust them.
Victoria, her blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, spoke up first. "You're Yui, right? The one who suggested that new online game to me?"
I nodded, playing my part. "Yes, that's me. I'm glad you enjoyed it."
Amy, who had a more reserved demeanor, chimed in. "She has been talking non-stop about that game. It's become her latest obsession."
I managed a small smile. "I'm glad to hear that. It's a great way to unwind."
Victoria, unable to bear the brief silence that fell over us, continued speaking. "So, what type of deck do you use? I liked the Twilight Priest!"
Ah, that certainly suited her. The twilight priest was an archetype focused around quick aggressive attacks using Twilight Priest to draw cards from your deck rapidly at the cost of life. You either won in the first few turns with your momentum, or got steamrolled to death.
I responded to keep up the conversation. "A control/midrange deck based on Shadowfang creatures."
Surprisingly, it was Amy who replied back. "Midrange? What's that? "
Whoops. That term may not have existed on Earth Bet. I really had to be careful when using slang words. I quickly scrambled to find a plausible explanation. "It's a niche term I heard on some gaming boards. Apparently it means your deck isn't particularly good in the early or end game but focuses on killing other decks when they are weakest."
I continued on with my explanation, flowing into a more natural tone of voice. "They mostly rely on disabling and removing cards from play in order to block early game tempo from opponents and strike back before end-game decks can ramp up."
The rest flowed naturally, with us conversing about different aspects we liked about the game. I made sure to be careful and avoid referencing anything cape related about either of us and refraining from even nearing Amy.
Somehow, all three of us completely different people had found something that we all enjoyed in Weavercard. Amy & I mostly enjoyed it for the strategy aspects, while Victoria saw it on a more superficial level, just using the cards she thought were the coolest.
I offered a polite smile to both of them. "Well, I should probably head back to class. Thanks for letting me join you."
Amy smiled in return. "No problem. It was nice to have some company."
Victoria joined in, her voice friendly. "Yeah, it was nice chatting with you."
I turned around and walked to my next class. That was rather exhausting. While I had enjoyed talking with them, keeping my guard up and scrutinizing my every thought before voicing it wasn't very fun.
Math went by in a similar fashion to the previous classes. I completely ignored the classroom and I focused on the bubbles I was maintaining. Several translucent white spheres were hidden across the school, much like before. However, this time they were of varying sizes, some as little as 10 centimeters in diameter.
My power, like always, was relatively consistent in its ruling. I had a soft limit of 5 centimeters in diameter as the minimum, and a maximum of 3 meters. I was rather lucky that my power was this easy to test, otherwise I would always be held back by the lack of proper power testing. And there was no way that I would willingly reveal my abilities to the PRT.
While you would think that larger bubbles would always be more useful, I actually found the smaller bubbles far more versatile. They could be concentrated in smaller areas, allowing me to use them in day-to-day life with reckless abandon. Of course, I wasn't so idiotic as to use it in broad daylight. Instead, I used it for minor tasks such as typing a document or arranging my schedule.
I was finally saved from the mind numbingly boring class by the bell ringing once more, indicating that students could go home. Well, you weren't supposed to go home, instead to your extracurricular activity, but I, along with many others, ignored that rule. It was only there so that the Wards could act inconspicuously, so the staff largely ignored it.
However, today was one such day that I wished I could go home, or even do work. I wasn't exactly thrilled about being chewed out by Faultline. Still, being a no-show would be a lot worse than showing up to do whatever she wanted of me. Hell, it might not even be that bad. After all, Faultline was quick and to the point, not really one for drama.
Additionally, she owed me one for helping out Labyrinth after the mission with Poltergeist. So it couldn't be too bad, right? I shivered as I realized that I had just said one of the most cliche lines of all time.
As I made my way to Palanquin, I observed the city. Despite the vibrant sky, the gloomy atmosphere remained pervasive. The scent of street vendors' offerings mixed with the ever-present dampness, and everyone largely went about their business quietly. You could occasionally hear a car honk or two, but that was it.
Sure, the skyscrapers were there and the market remained rather active for a city with such a small population, but there was just something different about Brockton than the cities of my previous life. The Bay, or perhaps just this area, seemed like a parody of the 21st century rather than a bustling metropolis.
Shaking my head, I walked to the side entrance of the nightclub. I knocked on the door, and waited a few seconds before the door creaked open. After a Newter poked through the door to check who was there, he greeted me bombastically.
"Hey Yui! I didn't think you'd be coming in today! What's up?"
Well, that was mildly surprising. Not just his enthusiastic introduction, but the fact that he didn't know I was supposed to come. It meant that it would likely be a private meeting between me and Faultline. However, my understanding of her wasn't high enough to know whether this was a good or bad thing.
Realizing I had been ignoring him to focus on my thoughts, I quickly responded. "Sorry, I was just thinking. I'm not sure, Faultline just called me in. I have a suspicion on what it might be about, though."
Newter let out a small chuckle and welcomed me in. On our way to the meeting room, he asked "So, what is your suspicion? Don't leave me hanging there."
"Well, I took action by myself against some local gangs."
Newter had a mildly surprised expression. "Really? Who?"
I paused for a moment before responding. "Bloody Princess and Luminous Prince."
Newter's shocked expression further widened. "Really? Those psychos?" He then shifted to a teasing tone. "And you did it without me? I thought we had something special…"
I politely laughed and stopped outside of the meeting room, knocking on the door. After around a minute, Faultline opened the door. She looked at us and said "Welcome, Yui. I see you're punctual as always. Newter, please leave us for now."
Surprisingly, Newter obliged without any fuss, and left me and Faultline in an awkward silence for a bit. She then gestured for me to take a seat,
She wasted no time, her expression stern. "So, Yui, care to explain what happened last night? My sources told me that you were involved in a rather large altercation."
I took a deep breath, composing my response carefully. "Yes, that's true. I came across some gang members who were causing trouble in the area, and I decided to intervene. They were involved in drug trafficking, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to hone my skill."
Faultline's lips quirked into a hint of a smile. "You're quite the independent one, aren't you? But remember, Yui, our actions have consequences, and when you stir things up in the city, it affects us too."
She proceeded with her explanation. "Remember, we are currently one of the most powerful organizations within the city. We have more capes than both the ABB and Merchants, and our quality isn't much worse with me and Labyrinth around. So why do you think we haven't taken any territory besides Palanquin?"
After waiting a moment, I realized it wasn't a rhetorical question. I gave it some thought before replying "You don't want to antagonize the gangs. If you take territory from others, you not only offend the ones you take it from, but also others who seek to expand in the Bay because they will view you as another enemy, not a possible partner."
Faultline nodded. "Exactly. But you missed an important point - PR. Currently, we are seen as much better than the rest of the villains in the Bay, not because we are any more noble than they are, but simply because we don't hold territory or sell 'goods'. While I don't care much for the public's opinion of me, it does mean the PRT does not target us."
I acknowledged her point, that was something I had overlooked. Although I would be better than the other gang leader's, I couldn't ensure that everyone below me would do the same. After that, I would essentially be another gang leader of Brockton, no different than the rest.
While that would be fine for most villains, it would mean that the PRT would target me instead of the current tacit understanding they had with Faultline's crew to largely ignore each other. Most other gang leaders had nothing to lose - Faultline, and by extension I, did.
"So, should I not take any territory then? Just operate from Palanquin like you guys?"
Faultline smiled. "Sometimes I forget that you're new to the cape me."
She led me past several hallways into a small room. I could hear a loud whirring sound coming from inside. Once she opened the door, I saw a large bulky computer, a glaring reminder of what time period I was in.
She took a seat by the desktop and waited for it to turn on, while I watched eagerly. After a familiar jingle and the windows XP logo flashing by the screen, she pulled up a spreadsheet. Inside was the name of several minor gangs within Brockton and their incomes.
I wasn't sure why she was showing me this. While it was impressive information gathering, it wasn't too difficult for a cape to gather data on gangs with no capes in fact, that was the only common factor among them.
Wait - no capes? The chance of an organization to survive in the Bay without capes was almost nil. Meaning that they were either so insignificant nobody would notice, which likely wasn't true seeing the numbers they were pulling in, or they had some sort of cape support.
I turned to Faultline. The only reason she would show me this was if she was that support. "So, you secretly support a bunch of organizations around the Bay? How hasn't anybody found out yet? "
She looked away to a random wall, likely pondering my question. "Well, that depends. Every villain or even hero worth their salt knows that capes are backing the minor gangs." She turned to me. "But the important part is that they don't know exactly who. With the large cape ratio in the city, most will refrain from attacking them so as to not earn the ire of other parahumans."
She continued. "But, they will immediately break that agreement should you expand into the areas people actually care about."
"I see, so is it part of the unwritten rules?"
Faultline replied. "No. Most other cities don't have a cape population this high and the ones that do are mostly consolidated, with only a few gangs existing. Brockton's intricate system is special in that regard."
A system restricted to Brockton Bay? For some reason, just hearing those words made me think of the Terminus Project. And the system of leadership she described really reminded me of feudalism, with lords and vassals. Had Cauldron penetrated this deeply into the culture of the city itself? I thought all they had done was set Coil loose and wait to see what happened.
Concealing the dread I felt, I asked Faultline. "So, you want me to follow this system as well?"
She shook her head. "No. While it would be possible for you to abandon the warehouse, I know you want a looser arrangement between us. I propose that you become an affiliated organization. On paper, we will not be related but everyone will know that if they cross you, they cross us, and vice versa."
She continued explaining. "You can still join us on missions and such, and accepting this offer is completely your choice. However, if you do decide to stick with our current arrangement you will have to disavow your territory publicly."
I thought about it. Either way I would be able to take missions, and Faultline was correct in assuming that I largely wanted to remain independent otherwise. It essentially had all of the pros with few cons. Most notably, I wouldn't have as much protection anymore.
Of course, Faultline and I, if I chose to accept the offer, would be allies. However, there is no way that she would risk as much for an ally. The moment that it benefited her to abandon me, she would - and she fully expected me to do the same. It seems we both had that mercantile nature ingrained into us.
"I accept." While I would be safer sticking with Faultline, I didn't exactly have the luxury of taking my time. I needed to grow as quickly as possible, and being coddled wouldn't help with that.
Faultline had an affirmative gaze on her face. It seemed like she approved of my decision. "Alright. I still expect you to show up at our meetings, but nothing more than that. Good luck out there."

So, in a plot twist that shocked absolutely nobody, Brockton Bay has yet another villain!
Several days ago, Faultline's crew was performing a raid on Poltergeist, another villainous cape. Apparently, The Elite was planning on moving into the city. Luckily (or unluckily, depending on how you look at it), Brockton is already filled to the brim with gangs, who apparently hired Faultline's crew to deal with Poltergeist as a message to The Elite.
Perfectly normal business, right?
Well, I though so too, until some of my sources told me that a new cape had joined the mission, apparently wearing power armor. (Possible Tinker?) Faultline's crew managed to defeat Poltergeist, and then announced the debut of Invictus. However, they haven't actually specified their standing, so it is unknown if Invictus is part of the crew.
Although nobody witnessed the fight, Invictus was later spotted attacking several Iron Ring facilities. From firsthand accounts, it seems like they have some sort of shaker ability that slows things down, as well as a possible Brute rating. However, it's hard to tell from the videos if their strength is from the power armor or themselves.
Just yesterday, Invictus attacked one of the warehouses of the Iron Ring, and seemingly emerged victorious. Now, at this point, I was thinking Invictus was maybe an independent hero who happened to work with Faultline's crew to take out Poltergeist. After all, the villains aren't the only ones who don't want The Elite here.
But then they ended up claiming the warehouse for themselves. So yep, another villain. Here are the relevant links if anyone is interested:

Edit: Rumours also have it that Invictus has fought Dauntless. I'm not sure as to the validity of this information, so take it with a grain of salt.

Rest assured that the PRT is looking into this. Our thinkers have determined that Invictus is likely to be of Ward's age, so we will attempt recruitment before escalating.

Didn't you guys already try? I work at the office building near the ferry station during the PRT raid, apparently they were there to catch Invictus because I saw Dauntless chasing after them.

I think Invictus is a reincarnated soul from another dimension, who has the ability to see the future. Think about it, they could just be amassing power right now in order to kill the Endbringers and become the ultimate villain!
