"Just breath in, breath out…" Uraraka repeatedly told herself trying to calm her racing nerves for what felt like the hundredth time. She could do this. She had to do this. She would give it her all. She would finally be able to show how much she's improved. But the moment when they announced their next matches…her jaw dropped.
She was shocked to see her name next to Bakugos.
Was she nervous? Definitely, but at the same time she couldn't keep that determined and eager smile from her face.
As she stepped out of the waiting room she was greeted by both Iida and Deku waiting for her.
"You ready for this Uraraka?"
"You bet I am Deku." she said punching her fists in the air and scrunching her nose.
"You seem awfully happy about this." Iida grinned.
"I'm not going to lie and say I haven't been waiting for this moment since first year…" she sheepishly rubbed the back of her head.
"Just try and be carefully ok." Deku said with a worried expression. How she managed to still put a smile on her face knowing she had to fight Bakugo… and not only that but even though he didn't know the full details of what had or was going on between both of his friends, he knew it wasn't going to be easy.
"I will, don't worry about me." She smiled gesturing for them to go on back to watch the fight which they did.
"Hey Todoroki, you coming?" Deku asked over his shoulder as they continued walking.
"Huh?" Turning her head, she saw the stoic boy leaning against the wall with one leg propped up and hands in his pockets.
Pushing off and walking passed her She could see he wanted to say something when he briefly stopped behind her. "Hey look if there's something I've done-" She started but was unable to finish her sentence as he continued on his way without glancing back. "Wait. Todoroki!"
Momentarily closing her eyes, she desperately tried to think about what she could have done to make him so upset but at the same time she felt her frustration with one of her close friends continue to build into anger.
This wasn't like him. Sure, Todoroki wasn't the type to just open up to anyone. But after they all got closer during their first year and Deku helped him, she really thought that during those weeks before this school year started that they'd gotten closer too and really hoped they could continue their friendship. 'Maybe he's still upset about what happened earlier since he hasn't really spoken to me since…'
Shaking her head, she took a deep breath clutching her chest before exiting the hall and taking the steps up to come face to face with a waiting Bakugo who had his crimson eyes glued to her. 'But I can't focus on that right now…I have a match to win.'
"AND HERE WE ARE FOLKS! THE MOMENT WE HAVE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR! MUCH HAS CHANGED SINCE THEY WERE LITTLE BABIES IN THEIR FIRST YEAR AND LOOK HOW MUCH THEY'VE GROWN! SO, LET'S GET READY FOR THEIR FINAL REMATCH WHAT DO YA SAY?!"
Hearing the shouts from all the roaring audience Uraraka tried to calm her breathing, keeping her eyes fixated on the boy in front of her.
"You ready for this round-face? Because I've been looking forward for this rematch for a long, long time Uraraka."
"Same." She balled her fist giving her most determined look.
"No holding back." Bakugo said, getting into his battle-ready stance with a slight grin.
"Don't worry I won't go easy on you." She grinned doing the same. "Oh, and Bakugo?"
"Yeah?"
Unable to keep the sly smile from crossing her face, she made sure to keep her brown eyes on him with the same spark he recognized from their first match which started it all. "If you're gonna withdraw, do it now. Because an 'ouch' won't cut it."
Slowly showing his battle-ready grin with excitement showing in his crimson eyes he shook his head. "I wouldn't dream of it Pink cheeks."
"BEGIN!"
Not having to be told twice Uraraka didn't waste any time to try and run up to Bakugo knowing that at first it was going to be futile since she didn't have anything to throw at him right now and that just like during their first match he would try and keep his distance.
Watching her Bakugo gave her a feral look before jumping out of her reach and throwing an explosion making sure to try and keep the damage away from the ground. "THAT SAME TRICK WON'T WORK ON ME TWICE CHEEKS!"
Dodging his blast Uraraka rolled to the side watching as the smoke slowly cleared. 'I need to think of something fast! He knows most of my moves and at this rate he knows that the best thing would be to avoid the same mistake as last time.' Quickly making her way back over she made sure to stick closer to the ground, so he didn't have an option but to use his explosion there and if not… 'Then I'll land from above and catch him off guard!'
"Dammit!" he growled, letting off another explosion just as she jumped up hoping to get ahold of him but threw her back with another blast. "IS THAT THE BEST YOU'VE GOT?!"
"Not even close…" she wiped her face only able to see his silhouette though all the smoke. 'I can do this!'
Narrowing her eyes at the small crack she saw underneath his boots, she tried focusing all her attention on just that while simultaneously dogging his attacks.
"What's the matter round-face?! THIS ISN'T A FUCKIN GAME OF TAG!" he snarled making sure to keep his eyes on her as well as his surroundings. He sure as hell wasn't going to make the same mistake of underestimating her. He knew better but the smoke did make it difficult to see what she was up to.
"Fine." He grinned, taking a small step forward and lifting his palms only stopping when he slightly stumbled when he felt himself suddenly lift up along with some of the debris surrounding him. "What the…?" Widening his eyes, he turned his gaze back to a panting Uraraka knowing she didn't even touch it or him to begin with. He'd only seen her use this move once before during the fight with the league of villains when she had her quirk awakening but that was it.
Crouching down with a dangerous grin on his face he saw her hair lifting up around her as she continued to glare at him, sweat dripping from her forehead. "THAT'S MORE LIKE IT… ALRIGHT URARAKA LET'S GO!"
Launching as many explosions as he could towards her, Bakugo didn't care anymore about any damage to the area, all he wanted was for her to go all out and fight him head on and with everything she had. That's what he's always wanted.
"This is insane!" Kaminari gawked watching the fight along with the others. "Are you guys seeing this?!"
Nodding Iida gave Deku a worried look. "I didn't know Uraraka was working on that technique. From my recollection she was a bit hesitant about it after last time."
Frowning Deku continued to watch the fight. "No, you're right. From my understanding she said she had a little trouble when she tried to use it during practice last time…"
Gritting her teeth Uraraka continued to keep her hold as Bakugo remained in the air along with the giant slap of cement underneath him as he fired off explosions after explosions. She knew he wasn't stupid and said so himself that he wanted her to throw everything she had at him so that's exactly what she was going to do.
Jumping from rubble to rubble she made sure to make them all float around her afterwards as she twisted and turned, nearly avoiding getting hit by another blast and using them as a shield before kicking them towards the angry blond right before he blasted them away yelling after her.
Widening her eyes, she saw everything happen next in slow motion when she saw him get ready to blast himself off. 'No…NO!'
Without thinking she lifted her hands in front of her releasing her quirk and watched him drop down hard before she clenched her fists tightly in front of her and the nausea came back ten times worse than usual along with horrific headache. What she didn't expect was for Bakugo to suddenly freeze up staring at her in shock when his feet wouldn't move.
Equally stunned Uraraka felt every part of her body tremble as her muscles, bones, every part of her body suddenly felt heavier.
Was this her doing?
"You think…this will stop me?!"
Lifting her eyes to see a fuming Bakugo who was already shaking with the effort of trying to pull his feet free. She knew that the moment he could then there was no way to stop him with how fast he was, and she couldn't let that happen.
Clenching her fists even tighter she momentarily closed her eyes before snapping them open again just in time to see Bakugo forced to his knees straining to even keep his head up with his arms growling. "Shit..."
He didn't know what to think. All Deku knew was that he wasn't the only one surprised since he could hear various gasps from those around him. "Now I get it..."
"Hmm?" Tilting his head curiously, Iida saw Deku franticly writing in his notebook.
"Think about it! We always assumed that Urarakas quirk only allowed her to remove gravity from anything she touches. But we were wrong once before when we found out it wasn't just limited to her touch. So why were we to believe that she couldn't do the opposite?"
"You mean…"
"Increase one's gravity." Todoroki said, keeping his eyes on the arena.
"Makes sense." Tsu agreed. "We were led to believe that her gravity manipulation was only limited to Zero gravity. But from our experience we've seen quirks change and evolve too."
"I don't think she even knew she could do that." Kirishima gasped.
Feeling his whole body shake from the strained effort of trying to keep himself from collapsing, Bakugo suddenly felt the cement underneath him begin to crack with the increased force. Grinding his teeth Bakugo concentrated on letting off one single explosion to the ground and one towards her allowing the pieces to break underneath him.
The momentary distraction was all he needed for Uraraka to suddenly release her hold on him, and he didn't waste time hurling himself towards her.
Barely able to dodge him, she quickly recovered when he started fighting her, making sure to not give her any openings to use her quirk on him again opting to change between hand to hand and quirks.
Flying over and landing behind her she suddenly felt intense heat from the blast Bakugo threw at her sending her back a couple of feet. Wincing when she landed on her back, she slowly tried to get up but was too late only catching Bakugo shoot himself after her and pinning her down with her hands trapped above her head.
Breathing heavily and her chest rise and fall, she felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest at the intense red eyes staring back at her also breathing hard as sweat trickled down his cheek.
"You're done!"
"No!"
"Give up already!"
"No!" Trying to wiggle herself free she felt him lift her wrists up right before slamming them back down hard, tightening his grip just enough to show her that there was no way out.
Watching her growl out of frustration and blow a strand of lose hair from her face, he suddenly felt his check redden just now noticing their current position and that just brought a whole lot of memories and thoughts to the forefront of his mind about their time locked up during the attack in the dorms which he really didn't need right now.
Unable to contain the sly smirk from forming and the words tumbling out of his mouth, he leaned down just enough so only she could hear but making sure to keep their distance somewhat professional. "Well, this brings back memories huh Ochaco?"
Gaping at him, mouth opened, and eyes widened. Uraraka couldn't believe what he said.
Bakugo knew he was a very observing person. He actually prided himself on that knowledge along with other traits he thinks would make a great hero. So, it was rather amusing to see Uraraka's face suddenly change color from bright pink to red.
Unable to give it anymore thought when a loud THUMP echoed in his ears as well as the arena and a piercing sharp pain traveled up and down his abdomen and groin.
"Oooooowww!" Echoed from the audience as they all watched on in surprise with some gasping.
"OUCH! RIGHT IN THE FAMILY JEWELS!" Present mic shouted shaking his head in disbelieve. "THIS TYPE OF THING SHOULD BE ILLEGAL MAN."
"Anything goes." Mr. Aizawa slowly grinned.
"Well, I just lost my appetite." Hawks shook his head in disapproval dropping his bucket and glancing at an impressed looking Endeavor.
"Did she just…" Kirishima's jaw dropped along with some of the others.
"She sure did." Mina grinned covering her mouth laughing along with Jirou.
"So not cool dude." Kaminari said.
Covering his mouth Deku stared wide eyed at his best friend. "Uraraka nooo…"
Back at the Bakugo household…
"Attagirl! Hahahaha that was freaking hilarious!" Mitsuki leaned over clutching her stomach laughing and wiping her eyes. "I'm so glad we're recording this!"
Staring at his loving wife disbelieving Masaru simply shook his head. "You do realize that's our son?"
Smiling Mitsuku shrugged her shoulders. "Meh." Before watching the screen still giggling.
Back at the arena…
'What the shit…?!'
There is a moment in your life… when you get hit and you seriously wonder if you'll ever be happy again. This was it. This was the moment Bakugo thought to himself when he felt his eyes begin to water and burn as the sharp pain continued to spread through his stomach after every breath he took, forcing out the smallest and most pathetic whimper he had ever made in his entire life up to date leave his lips.
Carefully rolling off and forcing himself to protect what hopefully remained of one of his most precious areas he tried his hardest to keep any other whimpers to himself. "Shit..." He hissed, closing his eyes and not entirely sure how much time had passed, but he guessed it was an eternity. And for the one time in his life…wishing his mom was there but knew better that the old hag was probably laughing her ass off right about now.
Swiftly getting to her feet Uraraka took a fighting stance waiting for him to finally get up after the few seconds that went by feeling both flustered and satisfied. She wasn't entirely proud of what she did…well maybe just a little.
Hearing him growl as he slowly staggered to his feet, Uraraka could hear the audience's awkward silence and holding their breath at what would happen next.
Turning to meet his gaze, she was met with the raging burning eyes of one extremely pissed off Bakugo.
As discreetly as he humanly could, he made sure everything was still intact, slightly wobbling before setting his sights once more on the girl of his dreams in front of him. Though at this point he wasn't entirely sure whether she cared about him at all. "That…was…playing dirty round-face." He managed to growl out feeling his palms burning.
"You said anything goes."
"Alright…"
In the blink of an eye, she saw tiny sparks surrounding him just a second before he was there one moment and gone the next, letting off one of his explosions that had her covering her face as she was roughly forced back.
Lifting her hand, she tried to increase the gravity around him once more, making him stumble before regaining his balance and taking slow strained steps towards her.
Feeling the headache increase as small drops of blood started dripping from her nose, she found it harder to keep her hold on him this time, reluctantly dropping to her knees just as he shot through the air at lighting speed dragging her along as she activated her quirk on him which launched them upwards at dangerous speeds.
"Shit!" Widening his eyes at how fast they were now going Bakugo made sure to keep his hold on her as they continued to soar upwards before he felt her body go limp. "Uraraka?!"
"I can…still…" mumbling she had no choice but to release them as it started getting harder and harder to breath and she felt herself losing consciousness.
Wrapping his arms around her when he felt them quickly descending back down towards the arena and already feeling the strain in his own body, he had no choice but to use his explosion to hopefully delay the fall.
With widened eyes he felt her trying to reach out and use her quirk once more to hopefully save them before she gave out, so he used one last explosion making sure to cover her head and the rest of her body with his own before they crashed landed making the whole arena shake.
Feeling the air leave his body at the sudden impact, Bakugo winced from the pain on his back carefully releasing his hold on her. "R-round face?"
Not receiving any respond, he quickly saw the medical team head towards them before he checked her pulse and with a relieved sigh closed his eyes as a grin broke out across his face. "Way to go cheeks. You did good."
X
With a loud groan she placed her hand on her throbbing head blinking furiously and trying to clear the haze that was blurring and doubling her vision all at once.
"Good, you're finally awake."
Trying to find the source of the familiar voice, Urarakas vision slowly became somewhat clear as she saw Recovery Girl smiling down at her. "What happened?" she asked squinting her eyes at the bright lights.
Patting her hand, Recovery Girl hopped off the bed to sit by her desk retrieving her clip board and jotting something down. "That was quite a display if I say so myself dearie. But you shouldn't push yourself too much especially when it comes to figuring out your new power."
"My new…? - Wait how did I get here? What happened?" she asked shaking her head hoping to get rid of the fuzzy feeling in her head.
"Well, you and that young man put on a brilliant show during your last match."
"You mean Bakugo?"
Nodding Recovery girl went back to writing. "Towards the end, you both hit the ground pretty hard but luckily thanks to the both of you, you two were able to prevent an even worse outcome, afterwards he carried you here."
"Oh." Looking at her hands Uraraka didn't know whether it was the medication she was obviously under or just the shock of hearing what happened that made her face feel warm.
"He did seem surprisingly worried about your well-being. Which was rather odd for someone like him if I'm being honest." Recovery Girl giggled. "I literally had to kick him out of here since he's schedule for his next match soon with young Todoroki."
"Next match? Wait, how long was I out for?!"
"About two hours." Recovery Girl said watching her take a steady breath as she turned swinging her aching legs off the bed and placing her feet on the ground. "Now I want you to take it easy. You hear me? I would recommend for you to take a few minutes to rest some more-"
"I'm fine. I promise." Uraraka smiled standing on shaky legs. "I rather watch the last few matches with my friends – and if I don't feel well then I'll come right back, I promise." She quicky added to reassure her.
Squinting her eyes smiling, Recovery Girl nodded. "Alright. But if you so much as feel dizzy don't hesitate to come right back, ok? And try not to overwork yourself either."
Bowing her head in thanks Uraraka swiftly exited the room thankful to be out of there. You would think after all this time in UA she would be used to it by now, but it was quite the opposite. Because of everything that was always going on especially with attacks, this ended up being one of her least favorite places nothing having to do with Recovery Girl of course and she was always grateful for all her help, but just the reminder that even though they are all heroes in training in the end of the day they are all still humans that could get severely hurt.
Taking it easy to walk down the empty steps leading to the hall, she still felt somewhat dizzy but not as bad as it was before. Taking a second to gather her thoughts about her last match she leaned weakly against the wall slowly pushing forward. Despite the fact that in the end she didn't end up winning like she hoped, she still felt proud of how she did allowing a small smile to enter her face.
Compared to how she did during her first year in UA, she did feel like she had significantly improved but there was always more room to grow, especially with how much stronger her quirk's been getting.
Halting in her steps she could see Todoroki sitting against the window stool staring out. Not wanting to disturb him since he clearly didn't want her company lately, she quickly passed him by continuing on her way down the last set of steps.
"Uraraka."
Jolting to a halt she slowly looked over her shoulder at Todorokis sadden expression as he kept his gaze out the window. "Yeah?"
"I wanted…I wanted to apologize." Meeting her brown eyes, he gave her an apologetic look. "For the way I've been acting."
"Oh."
"I just…" Frowning he tried to find the right words, but she could tell he found it difficult. "I've just had a lot on my mind lately. I'm sorry."
"Todoroki, if there's something bothering you or if there's something I did-"
"No! It's nothing you did." He widened his eyes hating that he didn't know what to say without making her feel bad. "This is just something I think… only I can solve."
Giving him a gentle smile Uraraka felt bad sensing the unease from the boy in front of her as he avoided looking at her directly. "I get that but remember if there's anything I can do for you, anything at all. Don't hesitate to ask ok, even if it's just to talk that's what friends are for."
"Thank you." He gave her a small smile.
"And good luck on your next match." She smiled lightly, punching him on the arm, turning away but stiffening when one of his hands slammed against the wall blocking her exit with his arm. "Eh…?" Confused, she turned her face back to see him standing in front of her but couldn't see his expression since his face was covered by his hair. "Uhm…I-is everything alright?" Not receiving anything she started to grow more concerned by the minute. "Todoroki?"
Before she could register what was happening, he was leaning in and pressing his lips against hers, pining her hard against him and the wall.
Placing her hand on his chest she gently pushed him away.
Breathing heavily Todoroki pulled away, taking a small step back with a perplexed look on his face. "I-I'm sorry I didn't mean…"
Still staring wide eyed in shock, Uraraka repeatedly opened and closed her mouth, but nothing would come out until they heard rapid footsteps down the hall and flinched when she heard the outside door being slammed shut.
Trying her best to run down the remaining steps and down the hall she frantically pushed the doors open to find no one there. "No…"
