Be Your Own Hero
Chapter 1 - Echoes from the Past
At four, after getting his test result of not having a Quirk, Izuku Midoriya, a boy with a heart of gold, learned the harsh truth.
Not all men are created equal.
It remained true for Izuku for the next ten years of his life.
After his Quirk test result, Izuku endured a decade of torture and anguish in his life. The ten years felt like a fucking eternity. As everywhere he went, Izuku was greeted with the sight of raised eyebrows, sneers, and disapproving looks. Echoes of laughter and scornful comments echoed in his ears, making him feel like he was trapped in a nightmare. The smell of fear and anxiety hung in the air as Izuku's heart raced with dread and humiliation. Each day seemed to drag on forever, with no end in sight. The world around Izuku was lifeless, with muted colors and constant droning sound in his ears. He could feel the weight of the despair in the air tightening his chest. Every step Izuku took felt like he was being dragged through the deepest pit of mud.
Izuku's life was a personal hell, with no escape in sight. And all of this happened because all for something that he lacked from his birth.
Every single day moment of his life was the worst day ever. Izuku longed for someone to share his pain with, but no one was around to be with him. It was sad, downright pathetic, that Izuku couldn't share this with his own mother. His sweet, kind, and trusting mother was the only one who was with him, supporting as best as she could as any mother did.
That's why Izuku didn't want to trust worried her, adding her stress further when she was a single mother, especially to a Quirkless child like Izuku did.
Although he had countless tormentors, his brother in all but blood was the one who made him the most miserable. What made it worse was that the last words his friend spoke to him still echoed in his head now and then.
"I have friendly advice for you, Deku. If you want a quirk so bad, why don't you take a swan dive off the roof and pray for a quirk in the next life?"
And guess what?
Izuku DID jumped off the roof and pray for a quirk in the next life. He had reached a point where the immense anguish and torment had left him utterly exhausted.
Feeling exhausted, he reached a point where he wished to put an end to his life.
Back in the day, Izuku continued to have faith in him, convinced that he was still the same individual he had known since childhood. However, as time went on, Izuku was forced to face the harsh truth in front of him. His friend had changed beyond recognition. Someone whom he admired because of his infallible strength and pride, now turned into nothing but fragile arrogance and cruelty. After hearing that word, all the sentiments and admiration he felt towards him were now just a faint memory, leaving a bitter taste in his mouth.
And just as Izuku was falling to his death, fate had a different plan for the Quirkless nerd.
A Pro Hero saved him. The Pro Hero in a form of a certain fucking homeless-looking guy with severe hygiene issues and sleep deprivation. The one who saved him was one of the renowned Underground Heroes, whose fighting skills and use of his Quirk had earned Izuku's admiration.
Well, emphasize the word "earned".
Had a situation occurred where Izuku's life was in danger, he would have been grateful for any heroic acts that could have saved him. However, after a conversation about his dream, all the respect and admiration he once had for the hero turned into feelings of betrayal and anger.
As Izuku conversed with the Pro Hero, the deafening thumping of his heart drowned the sound of his voice out. He truly wished the Pro Hero didn't save him from hearing every word the fucking homeless hero spoke. Izuku could feel his heart sinking deeper into despair. His words, which he deemed 'logical', shattered Izuku's so called 'half-assed dream' into many pieces.
"Being a hero is one thing, but a Quirkless becoming one? You'll be nothing but liability on the field, so here's my advice to you: be logical and realistic about your half-assed dream and get a better life."
As the Pro Hero departed, the echoes of their conversation continued to reverberate in Izuku's mind, suffocating him with their weight. It echoed in his ears so clearly, Izuku felt the deepest pit of frustration and anger that he couldn't shake it off. It was a devastating blow to hear such words from one of his idols, and Izuku couldn't help but feel a deep sense of betrayal. After all, the Pro Hero practically fights like a Quirkless, even with his Quirk and his Support Items.
Determined to prove the Pro Hero wrong, he trained like hell for one year and six months. And the result came where Izuku aced his dream school's entrance exam with the help of his mentors, mother, and new best friend. Not only did he pass, but he also secured the top spot by placing first!
The joyful days didn't last long, as the worst was yet to come to Izuku Midoriya.
On his very first day of school, Izuku was expelled after taking an assessment test. A fucking assessment test that focused on Quirks! What made it even worse was that the Pro Hero who had saved his life was the one who expelled him. Even after proving his worth with his skills and knowledge, the Pro Hero still didn't accept him.
All because he lacked something that he didn't have from his birth. Again…
Following that, Izuku experienced a complete blur.
All the years of suppressing his emotions from his torment and belittlement by others, he finally reached his breaking point. Ironically, the final trigger was the person who saved him from his death, only to shatter his dream again and ruined his life. With such action, Izuku unleashed a decade's worth of pent-up feelings and lash out against the Pro Hero. He shouted from the deepest depths of his heart. All of Izuku's anguish, sadness, bitterness, and anger he felt toward the world he was in were pointed at the person and those who belittled him.
And all he got was a clear memory of getting decked in the face, followed by a glare that could kill you on sight.
Izuku knew he had crossed a line, but he couldn't keep the words from tumbling out of his mouth after his pent-up feelings came up so much at the same time. He mentioned the hero's colleague, who had passed away while on duty, a fact that the Pro Hero had kept buried deep within his heart. But Izuku truly believed that the hero deserved to hear it, after condemning so many innocent lives in the past.
After all, Izuku knew firsthand of what it feels like to be cast aside because of lack of potential or gift. And he couldn't stand to see others have or will suffer the same fate. So, reasons be damned and lash out!
After the whole confrontation, Izuku had a personal talk with the principal chimera of the school. After hearing such words, the entire staff, including the principal have recommended him to a prominent school in Chitose, Hokkaido. It was only fair that Izuku received such a thing after all the things he went through.
So, you could say the karma balanced out… Somewhat.
After one or two days had passed, Izuku received news that he got accepted to a prominent school in Chitose, Hokkaido. After that, he began his new journey in the north, gaining and regaining things along the way.
Izuku knew that confronting the truth and facing reality could be a painful experience. Despite the challenges he faced, it was a struggle that he knew had to conquer.
After all, this was his story of becoming the first Quirkless hero ever.
The Quirkless Hero called the Resilient Hero, Valiant.
And Izuku was grateful that his friend, his best friend and brother, asked Izuku this question. The question that changed his life for good.
"Tell me this. Do you hate being Quirkless?"
