Chapter 2
Pam Hinkley had been working all day on the final draft of the new incorporation documents for another Ruby corporation subsidiary, a former large green guy high-tech business. All she needed was one final signature of approval from Eric Thornton. She took the tablet the documents were loaded on and went to Eric's office. His office administrator told her that Eric was in the quantum generator building. She headed over, wanting to get his signature and be done for the day.
Pam opened the door to the quantum generator building and walked in. The quantum generator was making a loud humming noise and vibrating the walls of the building. Pam saw Eric behind a series of high-tech devices on the other side of the room. She walked via the shortest route toward Eric between two large columns with donut-like tubes on top called toroids. As she walked past the columns, large sparks started shooting between the toroids, and a seven-foot slit of white light opened between the columns. Everyone on the control panels and computers looked up and saw Pam Hinkley standing before the slit of light. They all started yelling at her to get out of there.
With the sparks going back and forth across the top of the toroids, Pam turned and looked at the shooting sparks, dazed by their brilliance. The sound the sparks made was so loud she couldn't hear all the people yelling at her to move. The transverse portal slit opened, and its white light blinded her. She put up her hands to shield her eyes and dropped the tablet. She felt something pulling her toward the light. She felt strange, like being stretched, and turned to run away, but she couldn't move.
Everyone saw Pam start to stretch toward the light. Eric ran around the control panel to grab her, but was too late. She was stretched into the light and held for a second. A circuit board blew up at that instant, and sparks shot out of a panel. Pam was pulled at a 90-degree angle and disappeared as the transverse portal slit collapsed with a loud crackle. Pam was gone, but where did she go?
