"Scully, let's get away. Take some time off."
Mudler had suggested one afternoon at work while playing his usual pencil toss ceiling game. She looked over at him, half intrigued, half suspicious, "Okay Mulder, I'll bite, where too." Scully never knew if his prompts to "get away" were really an attempt to get her to some remote area of the country and go sasquatchin' with him.
Their relationship had just started moving in a more romantic direction. Not that they talked about it much, but both happily invested in the trajectory of their intimacy.
"How about Virginia," Mulder said with a boyish grin, "You know what they say about Virginia."
Scully returned a wide smile, raising an eyebrow, "Oh, I certainly do and I think I know just the spot."
She set it all up, a friend of hers over brunch one Sunday had bragged about a quaint town not too far from DC. It was by the water with fresh country air and small town appeal.
The perfect getaway.
That was two weeks ago, and now It was Friday on the heels of a three day weekend and Scully rented a cabin for them in Chincoteague Island, Virginia. She was at his apartment waiting for him to pick her up. She had left early from work to gather groceries, pack and run a few errands before their trip. Meanwhile, Mulder just finished his last bit of paperwork. He hated paperwork the most, and Scully's absence for half of the day only made it that much more intolerable.
They planned it out: she would wait for him at his place and after work he would meet her at his apartment to finish packing and then they would venture the three hour drive together to the cabin.
He was counting down the minutes. They had a string of cases with no break and they needed this reprieve. He gathered up his things, locked the office and made his way toward the basement elevator with a very large grin on his face.
He couldn't wait to see her.
Mulder drove and Scully sat in the passenger seat, criss-crossed with her shoes off. Dressed in a pair of jeans with her white Maine t-shirt on. Mulder had his staple gray t-shirt on with a pair of old jeans.
Mulder loved relaxed weekend Scully and he instinctively knew she loved it when he wore his gray t-shirt. They were off to a good start, he thought to himself as he fiddled with the radio.
Scully playfully smacked his hand away from the dial, "No sir, Mulder."
He looked over at her momentarily, arching his eyebrow and shifting in his seat at the physical reaction he had at her choice of words. She continued and he returned his eyes to the road.
"I will be the DJ on this trip. I made us a tape," Scully said, with excitement in her voice. She dangled a tape cassette in her hand, "don't worry Mulder, Phoebe isn't on this one." She giggled at her joke.
Mulder rolled his eyes and smirked, "Ouch." And laughed at the idea of them so long ago. Looking back now on how he behaved with Phoebe made him cringe. He wondered how Scully ever put up with him.
"Hey Scully," switching subjects, "What if we were partners on the wrong side of the law?"
"What do you mean?" Shifting her body weight to lean closer, placing her forearm on the console.
"You know, like Bonnie and Clyde."
Scully was amused, "Hmhmm, go on Mulder."
He continued, thumbing the steering wheel as he spoke, "What if we were evading the police, and this was our getaway car. Would we still be us, still be this?" Pointing between the both of them.
"Well Mulder, I suppose so, especially if you believe the notion that we've always known each other in our past lives." She playfully winked at him as she took the tape and placed it in the car tape deck.
"No really Scully, think about it. We have this obvious chemistry, in more ways than one now." Mulder said as he settled his thoughts on Scully's naked body on top of him. Shifting even more in his seat at the growing bulge in his pants, knowing full well they would be creating more moments this weekend for him to gladly ruminate over. "And maybe, when we are gone from this lifetime. We will still be together in our future lives, different people, but still partners."
Scully faced the road now, and smiled at the suggestion, "partners yes," she hesitated on her next words, "But lovers?"
Mulder laughed and momentarily took his eyes off the road, glancing at her as he reached for her hand at the same time. She met his hand with hers and he turned to face the road, "I'm all in, Scully. No matter the life-time, I suspect I always will be."
Scully let out a small sigh, "Good Mulder. Because so am I."
Mulder smiled, squeezing her hand and for a brief instant they rode in silence before the getaway car was filled with music made from Scully's mix tape.
