Rainy days. Oh, how I love them. The small patter on the window could put me right to sleep as I read in my room. It was fall. I love fall. Who knows what beast is walking around? So many new ones could be observed in the fall.
I smiled to myself as I turned a page in my book. "Turning Animals into Hybrids?" I shook my head. "That's not it," I turned to another page. "Fire making," No, no this is wrong. The dangers of conjuring. No, no," Where was that spell?
I sighed and looked up from my look around my room. It was a little messy, potions sat on my desk, My new suitcase next to them. I'm going to save beasts with that. When I master that spell of course.
Books littered the floor around my desk as well as my notes. I flipped a page and let out a sigh. That wasn't it. Where was that page? I threw the book on the ground in frustration and sighed. I'm never going to do this. I'm going to fail.
"No, come on Newt," I told myself, picking the book back up off the floor. My back hurt as I reached down but I didn't mind. I wish I would be great, just like my older brother Theseus, who has a job at the Ministry and was great at school.
I shook my head. No, I can't think about that. It's been a long time - two years - since I was kicked out of Hogwarts. I would have been in my sixth year now. Theseus likes to remind me of my failure.
Anyway, the rain. Oh, I love rain. I turned the page again and let out a sigh when I couldn't find the spell. I looked up from my book when I heard a small knock on my door. Theseus, when did he get back home? How long have I been reading?
"Newt are you busy?" my brother asked. Of course, he called me Newt. Everyone does... I could hear him rock on his feet when I didn't answer. I was busy but I didn't know how to tell him that. "I have something to tell you," He added. I sighed and put the book down before I got off my bed and walked over to my door.
When I opened my door, I saw my older brother. He was taller than me and in his fancy suit that he was so proud of when he got it two years ago.
" Newt, I have something to tell you," he said, waving his hands in front of my face, pulling me out of my jumbled, unrelated thoughts. I sighed and nodded but I didn't look him in the eyes, nor did I say anything.
"What is it?" I asked, voice quiet. If he says I found you a job, then I'm not going to take it. I'm scared to work with all those humans. It's scary. Beasts are better than humans and anyway, I don't think I can do it. Anyway, I needed to go back to my book and find that spell.
"I found you a job, so you don't have to read all day," Theseus told me. I looked up at him for a second before looking down and shaking my head.
"No, no, I don't want the job you have for me, brother. I'm going to get my own by myself," I muttered my voice shaking with fear. I hope he didn't hear it. I sighed before walking back into my room and closing the door in his face.
"Newt, Newt, open the door," I ignored him, opened my conjuring book, and started to read again. I'm going to have many beasts like Dougal. Wherever he is, he is shy, and I don't see him as much. He will be the first one I'll put in the case. I sighed as I still heard Theseus on the other side of the door.
"Newt, please," Theseus said. He was almost pleading with me now. Which was kind of annoying, but I ignored him. He doesn't know me. He doesn't get me. No person does. Not even Dumbledore who is helping me with my studies without Theseus knowing. It wasn't a lot but at least I'm learning something.
"Newt, take the job, it will help you find your place in our world, please," Theseus said, but I ignored it, barely registering his words. I turned a page in my book and stopped to look at the spell there.
Oh, that was a spell that could be useful later on! It wasn't the spell I wanted, but I could try and practice it anyway, just in case for later. I pulled out my wand from under the pillow, ready to practice the spell.
"Newton?" Theseus asked but again I wasn't listening as I waved my wand in the movement of what the book was showing me.
"You got to keep your wand?" I sighed and looked over at him from my bed, nodding a little before returning to the book. He was standing next to my bed watching me. His arms were crossed, when did he get into my room? I shook my head once more before going back to the book.
I saw him sit down at my desk across from me. Not that I cared. I needed to do this. I turned the page and nodded at the words. "Ok, now, I need the object to make it bigger," I said to myself, ignoring Theseus who was behind me now. However, I felt his arm on my shoulder.
"Newt," he said firmly. I flinched at his words. "Give me the book," he demanded, prying the book out of my hands.
"No!" I yelled as he closed the book and walked out of the room. "Theseus, come back!" I yelled, almost falling off my bed before running after him.
He was looking through the book when I found him in the dining room. "This is advanced magic, little brother," he said, turning the pages.
"Not even seventh years know these spells. I didn't learn some of this long after I left Hogwarts," Theseus said, putting something on a page before closing the book. It made a loud thump on the table.
"Why did you take it? I thought you-" I cut off rocking on my feet and fidgeting with my wand in my hand. I heard him stand up.
"Because you need to find something to do with your life other than reading. This is the third time this week I found you reading," he said, handing me the book. I opened it and read the marked page. It read:
"Capacious extremis. The Extension Charm. It can make this bigger on the inside only," Theseus found it! Oh, Merlin, he found it! I jumped up and down before I ran back up to my bedroom. I heard Theseus laugh as he followed me up the stairs.
I ran over to my bed, closing the door behind him. My book and wand were in my hands and opened my case. I put the book down and put my finger on the paragraph that I needed and nodded. "Ok, say the spell and aim it at the object," I read with a deep breath.
"What are you doing, little brother?" Theseus asked, opening the door again. This time, however, I did not ignore him. A bright smile was on my face.
"I'm going to use this to take care of beasts that I find and I'm learning how to make this bigger on the inside with the book that Dumbledore sent me," I said, fidgeting my wand again with a bright smile on my face. Theseus laughed. I didn't understand why but I ignored it for now.
"Can I help? And after that, can I tell you about the job?" He asked me. On one hand, I didn't want him to tell me about this job, because I can't do it, on the other hand, it would be nice to have him help me. He never helps me. He's too busy with work and in his office. I sighed but nodded fast.
"Alright," he said slowly and walked over to me. I pointed at the book. He ran his finger over it and smiled.
"Let's see that wand movement. Remember, it must be precise," I nodded and moved my wand just like the picture in the book. I laughed when I got it right.
"Well, done, little brother," he said, patting me on my shoulder. I flinched but he didn't notice. Anyway, I smiled at him as I moved my wand to the open case.
"I can do this," I told myself, forgetting that Theseus was there. "I can do this," I said again before I said the spell to the case. My eyes closed. "Capacious extremis," I said slowly.
When I opened my eyes, my brother was smiling at me. His arm was up to his elbow inside the case. The case was bigger! It worked! "Thank you," I whispered before I stuck my hand inside the case. "Oh, I'm going to take care of so many beasts," I said again, forgetting that Theseus was there.
"Well, done, Newt! Now, can I tell you about the job?" he asked me. I sighed but I was so happy to ignore him. He did help me, even though I didn't want any job in the Ministry. However, if I had a salary, I could get more supplies for my case...
"Ok," I said, picking up the book and closing the case.
"It's at the Ministry," he said, making me groan but I let him continue. "It's in the beast division," he said. I looked up at him, but I didn't see his eyes.
"That's, um, that's wonderful, thank you," I said quietly, sitting back down on my bed and opening the book again before I started to read again. He nodded and walked over to the door.
"You're going to be great, little brother," he told me before he left the room. Will I be great? I guess I have to wait and see.
