Rebecca' parents recalled an incident in which she had taken apart the generator of their house. When asked why she had done so, her justification was that she wanted to know how it worked. If only this technical aptitude could be utilized in the Spartan program

I thought all that talk of aliens invading human space was a load of BS, something from a cheesy sci-fi movie. But I saw the news, it was on every channel-Asmara's gone. They hadn't even finished counting the survivors when the news broke.
My mom went to see one of the neighbors a few minutes ago-Ms. Blachowitz, I think. Dad said her husband was an ODST. I think I saw him doing recruitment when I was ten. Damn.
What am I supposed to do now? I was gonna graduate this year, go to a fine university in the system, get an engineering degree, all that happily ever after nonsense! I can't do that now!
Y'know what? Fuck it. I'm gonna enlist.
I barely leave the house, I eat the sugariest cereal for breakfast each morning, and my only exercise is a brisk walk, but I'm gonna find those alien bastards and give 'em hell.
It's been real, journal, but this is where we part ways.

I was on Draco II when we heard the Covenant might be in the system. With little time to prepare otherwise, we got to work strategizing our best chance of success with Major Lucas. The Lysistrata Valley was the most logical option to land a huge ground force, and it was close to the base as well, so most of our attention would be on it; but I pointed out the Laird Canyon, a dried up riverbed towards the rear of the base, and told the Major that the Covvies could lead a sneak attack through the canyon and overwhelm us from both sides, so I was sent with a team to go mine the canyon and put up some basic defense spots before they arrived.
At 1300 hours we had finished mining the canyon and were getting started on the first of the fortifications when we heard the sirens going off. While the bulk of the Covenant's forces were amassing in the valley, as I predicted, a number of them were coming through the canyon. I ordered the unarmed members of the squad back to base, we didn't have enough guns to go around, and those of us still present got ready to repel them.
We were halfway through setting up a chaingun along the canyon wall, and just managed to finish setting it up as the first of the Covvies forces arrived. It was around this time Lieutenant Emily radioed for reinforcements, and we were told a squad was on its way.
If I can be frank, I felt they couldn't be here soon enough, because it only took a minute and a half before the first wave of Grunts showed up, followed closely by Jackals. The gun was between the Covenant and the mines, so I figured we could thin out their numbers a little. There were too many of the little buggers to make much of a difference, and then I heard them yammering to each other.
I'm not going to pretend I understand whatever language they speak, but I could tell they were calling for reinforcements. I put Emily on the gun and I loaded up three of the boys into our Razorback; I figured if we just drove through the crowd, it'd be a more effective method of clearing out their numbers than the gun would be.
The Razorback was pretty effective, I estimate it brought down the Grunt's numbers by 39%. But just as it seemed like things were going our way, their reinforcements showed up.
One second, we were driving. The next, something hit our Razorback and we were tossed into the air. Everything after that is a little blurry, but what I do remember is my left leg getting snapped, one of the guys crushed in half by the downed vehicle, and another survivor being slammed into jelly by a Gravity Hammer before she could even get up.
There was a giant shape (a Brute, I think) standing over me, about to bring its hammer down once more, when a shot rang out, and suddenly the Brute was on the ground next to me. I'd heard the rumors about the Spartans, but I always figured I'd never see one. But looking up at the top of the ridge, and seeing a green-armored figure leaping down with a sniper rifle, I thought it was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen.
The Spartan asked me if I could stand, which I obviously couldn't, then she did something unbelievable; she held the sniper rifle with one hand and fired point-blank into the head of another Brute. I then received a call from Emily, who reported that the Covenant had destroyed the gun and were heading into the canyon-the signal cut out shortly after, so I assume they took her out too.
I pulled out the detonator, managing to tell the Spartan about the mines. She took it from me and, after a few moments, pressed the button, causing a tremendous boom to shake the canyon. Then, the Spartan walked up to the toppled Razorback and, believe it or not, lifted it back on its wheels. Turns out one of the other troops had survived beneath it-unconscious, a nasty gash on her head, but still breathing.
The Spartan informed us that the battle was still ongoing at the base, but first she was going to take us to Outpost Silver for medical extraction, loading us into the Razorback and driving out of the canyon. My faculties were coming back to me, so I took my pistol and fired on any Covvies close to my side of the vehicle. I occasionally caught the Spartan looking at me-I didn't know if she was impressed, disappointed, or some third thing.
When we made it to Outpost Silver, there was a Pelican waiting for me. The Spartan helped me onto a gurney then, to my surprise, removed her helmet. Those green eyes stared at me, and she told me that, if things had been different, I could have been a Spartan.
Even now, I don't know what to say to that. But I probably looked ridiculous there, standing with my mouth agape as she put her helmet back on and left to rejoin the battle.

Tycho Observation Facility, Luna
Rear Admiral Gharem,
I am responding to your inquiry about potential recruits for the Spartan-IV Program. One soldier which came to mind is Sergeant Major Nation, 21st Combat Engineers. Her service record is impressive, with numerous engagements against the Covenant, and she has not slowed her down.
Additionally, during the Battle of Draco II, I personally witnessed her resilience; even when injured, she had the awareness to fire on enemy forces from a moving vehicle. I told her then that she would make a good Spartan, and I still stand by that observation.
Sergeant Nation's service record indicates she is currently based at Fort McKenzie, Sarkana. She should currently be available for inquiries about joining the program.
