It was after three when Remington peeked out of the cabin's door to see how his wife and daughter were fairing. What he found was a sleeping Sophie, her head resting on Laura's lap as she laid sprawled out on her side and Laura leaning against the boat railing, lost in thought and absently stroking their daughter's hair.
She looked up when he stopped down beside her, he quickly signaling for her to be quiet.
"Let me," he whispered. Reaching for their daughter, he scooped her up in his arms, then gained his feet, with ease. Long and lanky she might be, but even at fifteen, she was still light as a feather. Carefully, he made his way back across the deck and down into the cabin, taking care not to jostle her awake. After lying her in the bed in the master, he assured she remained asleep then crept from the cabin again to join Laura. Positioning his back against the railing, he extended an arm, enfolding her in his embrace when she pressed close to his side, and rested his cheek against the side of her head.
"I'd like us to start for home first thing in the morning," she announced quietly.
"Mmmm," he acknowledged. "I thought you might."
"Tomorrow afternoon, Sophie and I are leaving for Greece."
Well, he hadn't seen that coming at all…
