Chapter 4: Sweet Surprises!

"I feel just like a pirate with a bag of buried treasure!" Kim said to Barney as they filled the bag with shells.

"People with naturally curly hair love looking for seashells. In fact, we love seashells in general. They're so...practical." Frieda explained.

"Then yo ho ho and away we go!" Barney chuckled as the kids continued looking for seashells.

A bit later, everyone was back at the shack.

"The sun feels wonderful, today." Barney explained.

"And it's warm." Lila explained, lathering Snoopy in sunscreen. "The bottle says to apply every two hours, Snoopy."

"Is everybody having a good time?" asked Mr. Boyd.

"Oh yes." Everyone said.

"I'm sorry, WHAT did you say?" he teased.

"YES!" they replied.

"That's what I thought you said."

"We've been sunning and boating and playing in the sand and seashell hunting and surfing and swimming!" Barney explained. "And there's still a lot more to do!"

"My goodness, that can be hungry work." Mr. Boyd acknowledged.

"We've already been drinking fluids to stay hydrated." Lucy explained. "The fruit punch is amazing!"

"Good to hear. But do you all think you're ready for a little snack?"

The kids cheered.

"Yes, please!" Baby Bop smiled.

"What sort of snacks DO you have?" Jeff wondered.

Mr. Boyd grabbed a basket. "We have all sorts of wonderful things."

"Ooooooh!" Snoopy gasped.

"Let's see, we've got apples, apricots, bananas, carrots. A whole watermelon, you can share it." Barney began.

"Beets round, brussels sprouts, corn and peas. Even coconuts, if you please!" added Mr. Boyd.

"Rutabagas, radishes, bamboo shoots. Tomatoes, tomatos, kiwi fruits."

"Eggplants, artichokes, a turnip green. And I almost forgot." Mr. Boyd turned around and grabbed large ice cream, handing it to Snoopy. "We've got ice cream."

"ICE CREAM!" the kids cheered.

"I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!" Lila and Sally chanted.

"We can beat the heat with a nice, cool treat." Barney commented as Mr. Boyd handed him two scoops of pistachio ice cream in a cone. "Line up, everybody."

"I know what I'm getting!" Lucy declared.

"Me too!" Linus said, in the front of the line.

"What'll it be?" asked Mr. Boyd.

"A double dip cone, please. With chocolate on top and ice cream on the bottom." Linus said. He turned around to Lucy "I like the vanilla on the bottom because it leaves a better lingering aftertaste."

"To each his own." Mr. Boyd explained, handing Linus the cone.

"Alright, three scoops strawberry, please." Lucy explained.

"What about you, Emily?" Mr. Boyd asked.

"I'll have what Linus is having." Emily said.

"And I'll have chocolate ice cream on the bottom, then a scoop of vanilla and then another scoop of chocolate, please!" Franklin explained.

The three kids then got their cones and went to enjoy them. "Next." Mr. Boyd asked.

"Two scoops peppermint, please." Jeff said.

"I'll have rocky road." Frieda explained.

"Let me guess, people with naturally curly hair love rocky road?" Keesha teased.

"Nope, it's just my favorite." Frieda shrugged.

"Oh, I'll have chocolate-vanilla swirl, please!" Schroeder said.

"And I'll also have what Linus and Emily are having." Kim said.

"There you go." Mr. Boyd chuckled and handed the four their cones.

"I'll have a banana split, please!" Peppermint Patty said. "Extra whipped cream and cherries too!"

"Sounds like someone's got a sweet tooth." Mr. Boyd said.

"I'll take two scoops chocolate." Keesha suggested. "It's my favorite!"

"I'll have two scoops strawberry with chocolate drizzle, please." Heather said. "And in a cup with two spoons."

"Let me guess, sharing it with Charlie?" asked Mr. Boyd.

"You know it." Heather smiled.

"Awwww, babe." Charlie Brown blushed.

"I'll take two scoops bubblegum please!" Lila declared.

"And I'll take one scoop brownie, one scoop peppermint and one scoop cookie dough with chocolate sauce, sprinkles and a cherry on top, please." Marcie smiled.

"Hoooooooo boy..." Sally whispered to Danny, Baby Bop and BJ.

"That's gonna end in disaster!" BJ exclaimed.

"I'll just taker vanilla, please." Danny said, shocked.

"Here you go." Mr. Boyd smiled as the kids took their seats. Woodstock, Baby Bop and BJ stood in the line, deciding on what to get.

Woodstock then began chirping. "One itty bitty chocolate for Woodstock." Mr. Boyd said and handed the bird the ice cream. "And one strawberry scoop for Sally."

"Thank you!" Sally giggled.

"And what would you like, Baby Bop?" Mr. Boyd asked. "We got all kinds of flavors."

"Well...I...I'd like...I don't know what I want!" Baby Bop pouted in frustration. "I can't choose!"

"Well, maybe you don't have to. I can just give you one of everything." Mr. Boyd smiled.

"Oh thank you, Mr. Boyd!" Baby Bop smiled as Mr. Boyd produced an ice cream cone with one of every flavor.

"That looks like the greatest ice cream cone, ever!" Sally grinned.

"Oh it is, Sally!" Baby Bop smiled as BJ took his turn last.

"Awesome! I'll have one just like that." BJ smiled.

"OK, let me just..." Mr. Boyd said before finding out he was out of ice cream. "Uh oh."

"Uh oh? What uh oh?" BJ asked.

"Well, I sort of lost count, and I only have enough left for one scoop. Here you go." Mr. Boyd said, handing BJ a scoop of strawberry ice cream.

"Thank you, Mr. Boyd." BJ sighed, walking with his ice cream cone only for a fly to come buzzing right by him. "Shoo fly! Go away, Mr. fly! Scram!" Suddenly, he dropped his ice cream on the sand. "Oh man! Ay yi yi! I really wanted some ice cream!"

Baby Bop then whispered something to Mr. Boyd and he took some of Baby Bop's ice cream and produced to cones for her and BJ. "Oh BJ!" Baby Bop smiled.

"Hey! Where'd this come from?" BJ asked with a smile.

"From me!" Baby Bop smiled as BJ took his cone.

"Sharing is a nice thing to do, Baby Bop." Barney smiled.

"I know!" Baby Bop smiled.

"Thanks, sissy! Look everybody! I got ice cream!" BJ smiled.

Barney, Mr. Boyd, Baby Bop, BJ, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

Icy, creamy ice cream. Cold and sweet.

Icy, creamy ice cream can't be beat.

Icy, creamy ice cream. I giggle when I eat

my icy, creamy ice cream. What a treat.

Keesha and Frieda:

I could eat a bowl.

Kim, Lucy, and Heather:

I could eat a cup.

Danny, Jeff, Linus, and Schroeder:

When I get some ice cream, I eat it all up.

Mr. Boyd:

Eat it with a topping.

Barney:

Eat it all alone.

BJ and Peppermint Patty:

Eat it with some pie

Baby Bop and Sally:

Or a triple dipper cone.

After eating, the kids decided to relax a little and hang around the store.

"Ooooooh! What's that sound?" asked Baby Bop.

"Those are windchimes, made from little shells." Barney said.

"I told you. Seashells are practical." Frieda explained before heading off to find more seashells.

"They make pretty sounds whenever the wind blows." Barney added.

"And the wind blows a lot when you're right next to the ocean." Mr. Boyd confirmed. "Which makes the beach a good place for these." And he pulled out some kites.

"WAHOO!" Charlie Brown cheered.

"That's a really cool looking kite!" Danny said.

"Do you have any others, Mister Boyd?" Peppermint Patty asked.

"I sure do." Mr. Boyd replied. "Different colors, different shapes, but all of them are lots of fun to fly."

"The wind's getting stronger, now. So all we need now is someone to fly the kites." Barney commented. "Would anyone like to try?"

Keesha, Baby Bop, Danny, Charlie Brown, Linus and Peppermint Patty raised their hands.

"There are plenty of kites for everyone." Mr. Boyd reassured. "And even a special kite I've been saving for you, Barney!"

"Oh boy! I can't wait to see what it looks like!" Barney said.

"Guys, we're going kite flying! Stay close to the World Famous Life Guard!" Charlie Brown called out.

The rest of the kids looked up to see Snoopy sitting in a life guard's chair with Marcie's pineapple cup, a sunhat and sunscreen on his nose.

"We will, dearie!" Heather cooed.

"Don't get your kite stuck in a tree!" Sally advised, tossing a beach ball around.

"Have fun!" Schroeder called out.

"HAVE FUN, SIR!" Marcie shouted, putting on her goggles and water wings.

"Someone's sugar-rushing." Kim giggled.

"Two sand dollars say she'll crash out before they get back from kite flying." Lila told Kim.

Snoopy smiled to himself and took another sip of juice "Ahhh." He was thrilled to be a life guard!

Barney:

Flying so high with its tail in the breeze

Up in the air with the greatest of ease

Flipping and dipping with colors so bright

Barney, Baby Bop, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

I love to fly my kite

Whirling, twirling, high in the air

Whirling, twirling, floating up there

At the end of the string, it's a wonderful thing

I love to fly my kite

"They're really high now." Barney smiled.

Charlie Brown:

Little more speed,

Little more rope,

Little more wind,

Little more hope,

Gotta get this stupid kite to fly.

Gotta make sure it doesn't snag,

Doesn't drop,

Doesn't drag,

Gotta watch out for every little - Whoops.

Little less speed,

Little more tack,

Little less rise,

Little more slack,

Gotta keep my wits about me now.

Gotta make sure it doesn't get the best of me till I get it in the air somehow.

Baby Bop:

Look at it flutter and dance all around

Barney:

Hear the wind blowing it high off the ground

Baby Bop:

Feel the string tugging,

Barney:

but just hold on tight

And you can fly a kite

Barney, Baby Bop, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

Whirling, twirling, high in the air

Whirling, twirling, floating up there

At the end of the string, it's a wonderful thing

I love to fly my kite

Charlie Brown:

Millions of little kids do it every day they make a kite and -poof- it's in the sky.

Leave it to me to have the one fool kite who likes to see a little kid cry.

Little less talk,

Little more skill,

Little less luck,

Little less will,

Gotta face this fella eye to eye.

Now that I've seen you chasing moles,

Climbing trees,

Digging holes,

Catching your string on everything passing by,

Why not fly?

Barney:

Wait a minute, What's it doing?

It isn't on the ground.

Baby Bop:

It isn't in a tree.

Heather:

It's in the air.

Look at that,

It's caught the breeze now,

It's past the trees now with room to spare...

Charlie Brown:

Oh - What a beautiful sight.

And I'm not such a clumsy guy.

If I really try I can really fly a kite!

Later, Charlie Brown sat down with Linus. "What're Lucy, Kim, Lila and Heather up to?" Linus asked.

"I have no idea." Charlie Brown shrugged.

They were taking advantage of an asleep Marcie, by burying her in the sand and sculpting a mermaid tail around her.

"Wow, Heather, you're doing a great job with the mermaid tail." Lucy smiled.

"Thanks, Lucy." Heather giggled.

"This is so much fun!" Kim snickered.

"The sand just feels SO GOOD in between your fingers!" Lila added.

"AND it's just right, due to the sand-water ratio." Heather smiled.

"Hey Charlie Brown! Hey Linus!" Keesha yelled out.

"Hey Keesha." Linus smiled.

"You'll never believe what Lila and Kim are doing." Keesha laughed.

"Tell us." Charlie Brown said.

"They asked Lucy to help them bury Marcie in the sand." Keesha smirked.

"WHAT?!" Charlie Brown and Linus exclaimed.

"And then Heather suggested they do a mermaid tail!" Keesha laughed.

"HEATHER suggested it?!" Charlie Brown exclaimed.

"You can't make this up, Charlie Brown." Keesha smirked.

"What're you doing?" Frieda asked, walking past the girls while collecting even more seashells.

Lucy smirked. "Taking advantage of an ice cream sugar crash."

"Kim and I decided to do the burying in the sand." Lila spoke up proudly.

"The mermaid tail's my idea." Heather added.

"But I still think something's missing..." Kim said.

"Seashells?" Frieda asked, offering them some seashells from the bag.

"Perfect!" Lucy said.

"This is just what we needed!" Kim said "Thanks, Frieda!"

"No problem." Frieda smiled happily before also grabbing seaweed. "This too, this too!"

"Girls are weird." Schroeder said, walking along the beach with Danny "But at least Lucy isn't trying to get my attention."

"Indeed." Danny agreed.

"Whoa! Those kites were so cool!" BJ commented to Peppermint Patty.

"I know." Peppermint Patty said.

"I love seeing the pretty colors up in the sky!" Sally explained, still playing with the beach ball.

"Of course you can also find pretty colors under the sea." Mr. Boyd explained. "If you know where to look."

"We can?!" Linus gasped.

"Mr. Boyd is right. Tell me, Linus, when you look out at the ocean, what do you see?" Barney asked.

"I see water and waves. Both blue, like my blanket." Linus replied. "But that's about it."

"Right!" Barney explained. "But if you could see UNDER all that water, you'd find fish in every color of the rainbow, beautiful plants and coral and a lot of other surprises!"

"Like mermaids?" Lila asked, stifling laughter.

"Maybe." Barney said.

"I wish we could see under the water!" Emily said.

"GUYS! CHECK IT OUT!" Franklin called out, testing out a pair of goggles and a snorkel. "THERE'S A WHOLE WORLD UNDER HERE!"

"I know another fun way to see under the water." Barney said. "Have you ever heard of a submarine?"

"A SUBMARINE?!" Sally gasped before screaming with delight. "It's a train that goes underground, right?"

"No, that's a subway. A submarine is a boat that goes under the water." Barney corrected.

"Still sounds cool." Sally confessed.

"Do you have a submarine, Mr. Boyd?" asked Jeff.

"No, I'm afraid not." Mr. Boyd said.

"Don't worry." Lucy stopped decorating Marcie with seashells. "I'm certain BARNEY knows exactly where to find us a submarine."

"As a matter of fact, I do." Barney said.

"Told you." Lucy said.

"And it's right this way!" Barney instructed.

Lucy gave a smile. "Girls, keep at it. If she begins to stir, lull her back to sleep BEFORE she realizes what's going on."

"Will do!" Heather saluted. "I have the voice of a siren."

"We won't let you down, Captain Fussbudget!" Lila saluted.

"Where're you going, anyways?" Kim asked.

"On a submarine ride." Lucy explained, as if it was obvious.

"A submarine ride? Wait for me!" Kim gasped.

"Have fun!" Mr. Boyd called out before looking over "Nice job, girls."

"Thanks." Heather said, adding as much detail to the tail as possible.

Meanwhile, Barney was looking around before finding the submarine. "AHA! Here it is!"

"Let's go!" Lucy gasped.

With that, the kids, BJ, and Barney climbed into the submarine and began to explore the depths of the ocean.

Barney, BJ, Barney's Friends, and Peanut Gang:

If I lived under the sea, sea, sea

I think it would be neat as it could be, be, be.

I could visit all the fish

Anytime I wish

If I lived under the sea.

Jeff and Linus:

I could ride on the tail

of a great big whale

Wow, that would be great!

Emily and Lucy:

I could count all the legs

on an octopus

1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8

Barney, BJ, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

If I lived under the sea, sea, sea

I think it would be neat as it could be, be, be.

Barney:

I could visit all the fish

Anytime I wish

If I lived under the sea.

BJ and Peppermint Patty:

It would be so new

to watch a tuna,

Talking with an itty bitty snail

Kim and Franklin:

Or to see the big fin

on the back of the fish

Who carries his very own sail

Barney, BJ, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

If I lived under the sea, sea, sea

I think it would be neat as it could be, be, be.

I could visit all the fish

Any time I wish

If I lived under the sea.

I could visit all the fish

Anytime I wish

If I lived under,

If I lived under,

If I lived under the sea.
