A Little Shot
"Good afternoon," Doctor Rory O'Day said as he walked into the examination room and a nurse followed him. Annabelle sat on the chair with the twins on her lap and the twins were making soft babbling noises while wearing nothing, but their nappies. She often wondered what they were talking about, but both of them became silent when they saw the doctor and the nurse.
"Good afternoon," Annabelle said. Doctor O'Day went to lift Connor off of Annabelle's lap, but Murphy swatted at the doctor's hands while Annabelle gave the doctor an apologetic look. "No, Murphy. It's alright. He's not gonna hurt Connor."
Murphy glared while the doctor gently lifted Connor off his ma's lap and Rory walked to the examination table. Annabelle held Murphy while Rory examined Connor and the nurse wrote the information in the file folder. He carried Connor back to Annabelle as he placed Connor on Annabelle's lap then he looked at Murphy.
"Right. It's your turn," Rory said, but Connor swatted at his hands as the doctor tried to pick Murphy up.
"No, Connor. It's alright. He's not gonna hurt Murphy," Annabelle said and Connor watched Rory lift Murphy off her lap. Rory walked to the examination table as he started examining Murphy and the nurse wrote the information in the file folder. He brought Murphy back to her as he placed Murphy on her lap then Rory knelt down on his haunches.
"Well… I am glad t'say both of them are just fine. But I did see they need an update on one of their immunization shots," Rory said.
Annabelle knew neither of the twins liked getting shots and the last time ended with Murphy wailing so loud that she thought her eardrums would burst.
"Are you sure it's necessary?" she asked.
"Aye," he said while he stood then he looked at the twins and the twins titled their head to one side.
"Then let's get it over with."
The nurse walked over to the chair when she helped Rory pick the twins off Annabelle's lap then they walked to the examination table. Annabelle rose to her feet as she headed for the examination table and she saw the twins were lying on their backs. The nurse had walked to the counter to prepare the syringes and the twins were looking at each other as she walked back to the examination table.
"Here you are, Doctor," the nurse said as Murphy looked at the syringe and he made a little whimpering sound.
"Aw, don't cry, Luv. Don't cry," Annabelle whispered to her son, but Murphy whimpered louder. Connor reached out for his brother's left hand as Annabelle helped him wrap his tiny fingers around his brother's fingers and Murphy looked at him. She watched as their eyes locked then she moved away so Rory and the nurse could give the twins their shot. Connor's fingers squeezed his twin's fingers a few times while Murphy whimpered, but he didn't cry out and Rory handed the syringes to the nurse.
"Well done," Rory said as he placed the tiny band aids over the injection sights and Annabelle smiled.
"What good boys!" she said as she leaned over and she kissed the twins' cheeks. The twins giggled as they reached up for her and Rory helped her pick the twins off the examination table. He helped her dress them then Annabelle held them in her arms and the twins rested their heads against her shoulders.
"I think they deserve a sticker," the nurse said as she brought over the sheet of animal stickers and she held the sheet out to the twins. "Ok. Which ones do you want?"
Connor looked at the stickers when he pointed at the cartoon lion and she placed the sticker on his shirt. Murphy looked at the stickers when he pointed at the other cartoon lion and she placed the sticker on his shirt.
"Alright then. See you in a couple of months," Rory said and Annabelle nodded. The nurse opened the door as Annabelle left the room and she smiled sweetly at her little angels.
