The Guardian Returns Ch. 04

It is a simple day in Osaka. The sun is out, the streets are busy, and all the people minding their own business. What everyone in the city fails to notice is that they were being watched from up on top of a building.

Gamera stands there wearing his jeans and boots. He enjoys watching the humans from above just living their lives. The moments he enjoys most are seeing the kids on their way home from school or playing in the park.

There is one kid that had caught Gamera's eye, who was crossing a street, not paying any attention to the road. Gamera is quick to go into action as he sees a car heading straight for the kid. He snatches the kid up before the car hits him. The turtle lands in an area of the park where there are not many people.

Gamera gets down on a knee to look the kid over, "Are you alright, child?"

"I-I'm fine," the kid stares at the strange turtle man in wonder. "Thanks for saving me."

He smiles, "It's what I do."

"Who are you, Mister?"

"I am Gamera, Guardian of the Universe."

The kid's face lit up with joy, "So, you're a real superhero?"

Gamera chuckles, "I suppose I am," and ruffles the kid's hair.

A woman's voice is heard from across the park "Takuya!"

"Hi, Mom!" the kid yells back at his mother who is now standing in shock at what she's seeing.

Gamera stands up and tells the kid, "You better get going, kid. Don't want your mother to worry do you?"

"I guess not. Bye!" Takuya starts running towards his mom. Before he gets to her though, he turns back around and shouts, "Hey, Gamera! Will I see you again!?"

"Perhaps!" Gamera smiles at the kid. "I'll always be around!" The guardian then turns around and takes off into the sky. Gamera lands back on top of the building he was on earlier, grabs his coat and hat, and takes off again.

.oOo.

"Where is he?" Asagi's shift is just about to end. She looks down at her watch, waiting for a regular customer that's usually here by now. "He's late," the waitress is getting worried for he has never been late before. Then, she hears the bell that signals someone has come in. turning around she sees the all-too-familiar face of the guardian.

"Sorry I'm late," Gamera says as he takes a seat at the counter. "There was a problem."

"That's alright, Gamera. The usual?" Asagi asks as she gets a cup and a freshly brewed pot of tea.

"That'll be nice."

As Asagi pours the tea she asks, "So, what happened?"

"A kid nearly got hit by a car near the park," he answers before taking a sip.

"Oh, my gosh! Is the kid alright?"

"The kid's fine," Gamera smiles. "I got there in time."

She sighs, "That's a relief.".

"Sure is," the guardian takes another sip of his tea and puts it down. "I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't made it."

"It wouldn't have been your fault," she smiles. "You always did like kids."

"Why wouldn't I? The children are the true saviors of this world. Without them there would be no such thing as a future."

"I guess that's why you're their friend," she gives one last smile before putting some money in the cash register to pay for the tea, clocks out, grabs her coat, and her and Gamera both leave.
