Chapter 1: Entering the ruins.
Frisk's vision went black and their body felt like it was floating in an endless void. Then, all at once, their feet planted firmly on the ground and their eyes opened, their sight blurry for a few moments. Their senses started to return to them, the cool air brushing against their skin, the faint sound of birds chirping. The scent of flowers and a strange, musky aroma.
Frisk blinked a few times, trying to clear the haze from their eyes. They could tell that they were in a dark room, a soft light emitting from above them. A large hole was in the ceiling of the cave. Frisk realized that they must have fallen down a hole to get here. They were covered in scrapes and bruises, the worst of the injuries being their leg, which seemed to be broken.
"Ugh..."
They tried to stand, but they couldn't. They could barely move without pain surging through their body. Frisk groaned again, tears brimming in their eyes. They looked around the dark room, a strange feeling of fear growing in their chest. There was something in this room, they could feel it. They couldn't explain it, but there was something watching them.
"Is someone there?" Frisk called out, their voice echoing through the chamber. They winced at the sound, their voice sounding too loud in the silence of the cave. They swallowed, their throat feeling dry.
There was no response.
"Please, help me," they said, their voice cracking.
Still, no response.
Frisk's eyes stung with tears. They didn't want to be alone. They needed help. They had to get home.
A shadow fell over them. They looked up to see a large, imposing figure. The creature was humanoid in shape, It looked like a goat, but was covered in thick white fur. Two large horns stuck out of its head, and it wore a purple robe. Its red eyes glinted in the dim light, and a smile curled across its face.
"Do not be afraid, little one," the creature said. "I am Toriel, caretaker of these ruins."
Toriel bent down and extended a paw toward Frisk. Frisk hesitated, but accepted the offered hand.
"I am so sorry about your leg, my child," Toriel said. "I will bring you back to my home, and I will heal you."
Toriel lifted the small human in her arms and started walking.
"W-wait!" Frisk cried out.
"It is alright," Toriel said gently. "I will keep you safe."
The human closed their eyes. Toriel's voice was comforting.
"There is no need to worry, my child. We are almost there."
The door opened and a warm light filled the room. Toriel walked in and set the human down on a bed.
"I will heal your leg," Toriel said, her voice calm and gentle. "This might hurt a bit."
Frisk braced themselves, their breath quickening. Toriel placed her paws on their leg, and a bright green light surrounded their leg. Frisk winced, the pain intense, but the healing magic worked quickly. The pain eased, and Frisk let out a sigh of relief.
"There you go," Toriel said, smiling.
"Thank you," Frisk whispered.
"Now, it is time for a lesson."
Frisk tilted their head, confused.
"The Ruins are full of puzzles," Toriel explained. "If you want to leave the Ruins, you will have to solve them."
"Puzzles?"
"Yes, they are quite fun," Toriel said. "Come, my child. I will teach you how to solve the first puzzle."
Frisk slowly got out of bed, their leg no longer aching. They followed Toriel out of the room and down the stairs.
"Here is an easy puzzle," Toriel said. "There are four switches, and you need to step on all of them."
"Okay," Frisk said.
"I will show you where they are," Toriel said.
Frisk followed Toriel down the hall, and Toriel pointed out the switches. Frisk walked over to the first switch and stepped on it. Nothing happened. Frisk looked at Toriel, and Toriel gave them a small smile.
"Very good, my child. Now try the second switch."
Frisk walked over to the second switch and stepped on it. Once again, nothing happened. Frisk frowned and looked at Toriel.
"You are doing well," Toriel said.
"There's one more switch," Frisk said.
"That's right. Why don't you step on it?"
Frisk walked over to the final switch and stepped on it. This time, the sound of a mechanism activating could be heard.
"That was very good, my child," Toriel said, beaming.
Frisk smiled, pleased with themself. They looked up at Toriel, and her red eyes shone with affection.
"Well done, my child," Toriel said. "Why don't you rest here for a bit while I prepare dinner?"
Frisk nodded, their stomach growling.
"You are welcome to explore the house, but do not leave the room," Toriel said, before heading off into another room.
Frisk sat down on the bed, taking a moment to look around the room. The walls were lined with bookshelves, and a desk sat in the corner, a computer resting on top of it. Frisk looked over the book titles, their gaze settling on a large, leather-bound book.
They picked up the book and opened it, their eyes scanning the page.
"Gaster's Destiny: The Life and Times of the Royal Scientist"
Frisk tilted their head. The title was intriguing. They continued to read, their eyes widening as they learned more about the mysterious royal scientist.
"W. D. Gaster was an incredible scientist and inventor. He created the CORE, the device that powers the Underground. However, he suffered an unfortunate accident while working on the CORE. His experiments went awry, and he fell into his creation. His followers tell us he is scattered across time and space, unable to ever come back to this world.
But there are those who believe that Gaster is still here, watching over us. They say that his ghost haunts the CORE, searching for a way to come back to this world. Perhaps if we can find a way to bring him back, the Underground will have a new ruler. Only time will tell..."
Frisk closed the book, their mind racing. There were so many mysteries surrounding the royal scientist, and it seemed like no one really knew what had happened to him. Perhaps they could learn more about him if they visited the CORE.
"Oh!"
Frisk turned to see Toriel standing in the doorway.
"Are you ready for dinner, my child?"
"Y-yes."
Toriel walked into the kitchen and set the table.
"This is a pie I baked for us," Toriel said, smiling. "It is called 'Butterscotch-Cinnamon Pie.' I hope you enjoy it."
Frisk sat down at the table, their mouth watering. The pie looked delicious.
"Let us eat," Toriel said.
Frisk took a bite of the pie, and their eyes widened. It was delicious!
"Do you like it?" Toriel asked, her eyes sparkling.
"Yes, it's very good!" Frisk replied.
Toriel smiled, clearly pleased. "I am glad. Eat as much as you like."
Frisk nodded, digging in. The pie was warm and comforting, and it made them feel safe and loved.
"So, Frisk, do you like the Underground so far?"
"Yeah, it's great! But I just explored the ruins, but nothing more."
"Ah, I see. Well, there is much more to see in the Underground. But, I can't let you go without warning you."
"Warning me? About what?"
"Asgore...the king of the monsters. He is not a nice man. You must avoid him at all costs."
"O-oh."
"Frisk, I am so sorry. I wish you did not have to hear that. But it is true. Asgore has lost his way. I fear that he will do terrible things if given the chance. Please, stay away from him. For your own sake."
"I-I'll do my best."
Toriel hugged Frisk. "I know you will, my child."
She then pulled away, smiling. "I am sure you are tired. Why do not you get some rest? I will wake you in the morning."
Frisk nodded and headed upstairs. Toriel watched as they disappeared into the bedroom. She sighed and shook her head.
"Asgore, what have you become?"
She turned and headed back to her room.
Frisk was asleep when Toriel came in. She stood over the bed, staring at the child. She reached out and gently touched their face.
"My child, please do not make the same mistakes that I did," she whispered.
She sighed and turned away, walking out of the room.
