Chapter 2: Toriel and the Spider Bake Sale.
Frisk was exploring the ruins when they stumbled across a spider bake sale. They were surprised to find that the spiders were selling pastries and sweets. They bought a cupcake and a spider doughnut, enjoying the flavors.
"Thank you," Frisk said. "These are delicious."
The spiders smiled and bowed.
"We are happy to serve," one of them said.
Frisk continued on their journey, the encounter leaving them with a sense of wonder.
Later, as Frisk was about to leave the Ruins, they stopped at Toriel's house. They knocked on the door, and a few moments later, it opened.
"Oh, hello Frisk. What brings you here?"
"I just wanted to say goodbye," Frisk said.
Toriel smiled. "That is very thoughtful of you. Would you like a piece of pie before you go?"
"No thank you. I'm not hungry."
"Well, alright. Be careful out there, and do not forget to call me once in a while."
"I will."
Frisk left the Ruins, continuing their journey through the Underground. The exit of the ruins were before the basement of Toriel's house, were a black gate was there, separating them from the snowy forest ahead.
Frisk took a deep breath and stepped forward, the gate swinging open as they approached. They shivered as the cold air hit their skin.
"I suppose it is too late to turn back now," they muttered, walking into the forest.
The snow crunched beneath their feet as they walked, and they could see their breath in the air. The trees were bare, their branches coated in a layer of snow.
The forest was silent, the only sound coming from Frisk's footsteps. They walked through the forest, their eyes darting around. They felt like they were being watched.
"Who's there?" Frisk called out.
No response.
"Show yourself!" Frisk demanded.
A rustling sound came from behind them. Frisk whirled around, their eyes wide.
"What do you want?"
"heh...didn't think you'd see me coming," a voice said.
"W-who are you?"
"i'm sans, sans the skeleton."
"Sans, the Skeleton?"
"yeah, that's right. i'm sentry here in snowdin forest."
"Well, um...it's nice to meet you."
"you, too. hey, you look pretty tough. wanna see something cool?"
"Sure."
"follow me."
Frisk followed Sans deeper into the forest. They came upon a clearing with a wooden station.
"this is my station. pretty neat, huh?"
"Uh, yeah. It's pretty neat."
"anyway, i'm actually supposed to be on the lookout for humans right now. but...y'know...i don't really care about capturing anybody. now, my brother, papyrus...he's a human-hunting FANATIC. hey, actually, i think that's him over there. i have an idea. go through this gate thingy."
"What?"
"yeah, go right through. my bro made the bars too wide to stop anyone."
Frisk hesitated, but then went through the gate.
"quick, behind that conveniently-shaped lamp."
Frisk hid behind the lamp, their heart racing.
"sup, bro?"
"YOU KNOW WHAT "SUP," BROTHER! IT'S BEEN EIGHT DAYS AND YOU STILL HAVEN'T...RE-CALIBRATED. YOUR. PUZZLES! YOU JUST HANG AROUND OUTSIDE YOUR STATION! WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING?!"
"staring at this lamp. it's really cool. do you wanna look?"
"NO! I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT! WHAT IF A HUMAN COMES THROUGH HERE!? I WANT TO BE READY! I WILL BE THE ONE! I MUST BE THE ONE! I WILL CAPTURE A HUMAN! THEN, I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS...WILL GET ALL THE THINGS I UTTERLY DESERVE! RESPECT... RECOGNITION... I WILL FINALLY BE ABLE TO JOIN THE ROYAL GUARD! PEOPLE WILL ASK, TO, BE MY, "FRIEND?" I WILL BATHE IN A SHOWER OF KISSES EVERY MORNING."
"hmm...maybe this lamp will help you."
"SANS! YOU ARE NOT HELPING! YOU LAZYBONES! ALL YOU DO IS SIT AND BOONDOGGLE! YOU GET LAZIER AND LAZIER EVERY DAY!"
"hey, take it easy. i've gotten a ton of work done today. a skele-ton."
"SANS!"
"come on. you're smiling."
"I AM AND I HATE IT! SIGH. WHY DOES SOMEONE AS GREAT AS ME...HAVE TO DO SO MUCH JUST TO GET SOME RECOGNITION..."
"wow, sounds like you're really working yourself..."
Frisk was confused of what was happend, so he decided to have the bravery to come out of the lamp.
"Hi...?" Frisk said a bit scared.
"SANS! OH MY GOD! IS THAT...A HUMAN!?"
"uhhhh...actually, i think that's a rock."
"OH."
"I am not...a rock," Frisk said a bit nervous.
"OH MY GOD! SANS! I FINALLY DID IT! UNDYNE WILL...I'M GONNA...I'LL BE SO...POPULAR! POPULAR! POPULAR! NYEHEHEHEHEHEHEHE!"
"congratulations, bro. ...i knew you could do it."
"AHEM! HUMAN! YOU SHALL NOT PASS THIS AREA! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS...WILL STOP YOU! I WILL THEN CAPTURE YOU! YOU WILL BE DELIVERED TO THE CAPITAL! THEN...THEN! I'M NOT SURE WHAT'S NEXT."
"in that case, you'd better do it soon."
"RIGHT! WAIT! MAYBE YOU SHOULD FIGHT MY BLUE ATTACK FIRST."
"Blue attack?"
"YOU SEE, THIS IS YOUR FIRST PUZZLE! IT'S TRULY AN INGENIOUS DESIGN! YOU SEE THESE BLUE ATTACKS? YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO MOVE AROUND THEM WITHOUT GETTING HIT."
Papyrus sends a few bones, which appear cyan, towards Frisk. The human moves around them with ease.
"CONGRATU-LATIONS ON COMPLETING THE PUZZLE!" Papyrus says. "YOU DIDN'T LET A SINGLE BONE HIT YOU!"
"That was pretty easy."
"WELL, IT ONLY GETS HARDER FROM HERE. THE NEXT PUZZLE WILL BE MUCH DIFFERENT! I THINK..."
Frisk follows Papyrus, and after a little while, they encounter a group of monsters.
"HEY, GUYS! I'M GOING TO CAPTURE A HUMAN, RIGHT NOW!"
One of the monsters walks up to Papyrus.
"Um...are you sure? You know, humans are supposed to be really dangerous." Frisk said
"DON'T BE RIDICULOUS! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WOULD NEVER GET INTO A HARMFUL SITUATION LIKE THAT!" Papyrus said with a smile.
Frisk nods, and continues on their way.
"SO, ANYWAY, I HAVE TWO MORE PUZZLES FOR YOU TO SOLVE. BUT FIRST, WE NEED TO CHECK ON THEM! COME ON!"
Frisk followed Papyrus, but suddenly, they heard a cracking sound.
"OH, NO! YOU FOUND MY PUZZLE!"
Frisk looked down, and saw a plate of spaghetti on the ground.
"HOW DID YOU AVOID MY TRAP? AND, MORE IMPORTANTLY...IS THERE ANY LEFT FOR ME?"
Frisk looked back, and saw that the plate of spaghetti was gone.
"SANS! WHERE DID YOU PUT MY SPAGHETTI?"
"uh...i dunno. it was here when i arrived. maybe a snow poff ate it?"
"Where did you appear from?" Frisk asked.
"Oh, I forgot to mention. I can teleport," Sans said.
"WAIT, WHAT? YOU DIDN'T TELLED ME BEFORE, SANS."
"i didn't tell you before"
"WHY NOT?"
"you didnt ask"
"ARGH!"
"hey, why don't you make more spaghetti, bro? it was so good that i thought it would have been wasted on frisk"
"REALLY?"
"of course"
"WOWIE! YOU REALLY LIKED IT, SANS? OH BOY! I'LL MAKE MORE!"
"I-I'm really sorry, but I can't eat any spaghetti," Frisk said, a bit nervous.
"NONSENSE! YOU HAVE TO TRY MY SPAGHETTI SOMETIME. IT IS, IN A WAY, A TRADITIONAL SPAGHETTI RECIPE, WITH A LITTLE OF MY CREATIVE TOUCH."
"um, paps, remember what happened last time you cooked?"
"DON'T WORRY! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL COOK SOMETHING THAT YOU WON'T DISLIKE."
"I'm allergic to tomato sauce," Frisk said.
"AW. I'M SO SORRY, FRISK. I DIDN'T KNOW."
"It's alright. I'll try another time."
"well, if you can't have his spaghetti, i know a place that serves great food. let's go, frisk."
Frisk followed Sans, and a few minutes later, they arrived at a restaurant.
"Here we are. Grillby's," Sans said.
The three went inside, and sat down. A man wearing a pink shirt and purple pants walked up to them.
"Welcome to Grillby's. What can I get for you?"
"i'll have a burger and fries, please."
"I'll have the same, please," Frisk said.
"And I'll have the house special!"
The man nodded and went back to the kitchen.
"so, frisk, what do you think of my bro?"
"Oh, um, he's pretty nice."
"yeah, he's the coolest."
"But, he is a bit annoying."
"oh, don't worry. that's just how he is."
"Here's your orders," the man said, putting the plates in front of them.
"Thank you," Frisk and Sans said at the same time.
They all ate in silence.
"Hey, Grillby, can I have another one of your burgers?" Frisk asked.
"Sure, kid."
"Thanks."
"so, frisk, what brings you to the underground?"
"Well, I, um, fell," Frisk said, nervously.
"fell, huh? how did you end up falling down here?"
"Well, I, uh...I don't really remember. I was in a cave, and there was a hole. I fell down, and the next thing I knew, I was here."
"that's a pretty weird story. you sure you're not hiding anything?"
"What? No, of course not. Why would I be?"
"just wondering."
"So, Sans, how long have you been living here?"
"i was born here."
"How can a skeleton be born?" Frisk asked.
"well, pap and i, we weren't always skeletons."
"Huh?"
"yeah, our parents were human, but they died when we were young."
"Wait, so you're saying that humans can become skeletons?"
"kinda. well, not really. you see, there's something called "Determination."
"What's Determination?"
"determination is the will to keep living. it's a powerful energy. monsters can't use determination, but humans can. humans who have determination are able to come back from the dead. however, monsters are made of magic, and magic cannot sustain determination. when a monster has too much determination, their body will melt. that's why monsters can't have a high concentration of determination."
"What about you and your brother?"
"well, we weren't completely monsters. our mom was human. she fell down into the underground when we were very young. eventually, our dad fell for her, and they had us. since our mom was the only human in the underground, and the only one with determination, our bodies weren't completely made of magic. so, we had a high concentration of determination. because of that, our bodies didn't melt. instead, we turned into skeletons. after mom died, our dad took care of us."
"Oh."
"what, never heard the story before?"
"No, not really."
"hmm...weird. oh well."
"Um, Sans? I don't feel so good," Frisk said.
"let's go to the bathroom then."
"What?"
"there's a bathroom here. c'mon, let's go."
"Alright, let's go."
Frisk and Sans stood up, and Frisk went to the bathroom.
"hey, are you alright?" Sans asked.
"I'm fine, thanks. Let's go."
The two exited the bathroom, and sat back down.
"so, where do you want to go next?"
"Oh, uh...maybe we could go to Snowdin."
"snowdin, huh? sure, let's go. c'mon, paps, we're leaving."
"AW, REALLY? BUT, I WAS HAVING FUN HERE!"
"i know, but it's time to go. let's go."
"FINE. GOODBYE, GRILLBY!"
"Bye, guys."
"goodbye, grillbz. pay the tab, will ya, paps?"
"OH, OKAY."
"heh. thanks."
The group went outside, and walked to Snowdin.
"hey, i know a shortcut. follow me."
"Okay, but be careful," Frisk said.
"alright. ready, paps?"
"READY!"
"okay, now close your eyes and hold onto me."
"Alright."
Sans grabbed Frisk's hand and started to walk. The path seemed to get shorter, and the snowy road became darker. Then, all of a sudden, everything stopped.
"alright, you can open your eyes now."
"Whoa. Where are we?" Frisk asked, amazed.
"we're in snowdin," Sans said, shrugging.
"But...this isn't Snowdin," Frisk said, looking confused.
"i told you, it's a shortcut."
"Well, how did you do it?"
"that's a secret."
"Well, let's go, then. I don't want to stay here."
"sure, buddy. let's go."
Sans took Frisk's hand, and the two continued walking.
"Hey, wait for me!" Papyrus shouted, running after the two.
The group continued walking, until they came to a snowball fight area.
"OH MY GOD! THEY'RE THrowing BALLS OF SNOW AT EACH OTHER! AND ARE THOSE...HUMANS?"
"I'm pretty sure those are kids, Paps," Frisk said.
"YOU MEAN THERE ARE MORE HUMANS IN THE UNDERGROUND? OH BOY, I NEED TO CAPTURE THEM!"
"wait, wait, pap, they're just playing," Sans said.
"THEN, LET'S PLAY WITH THEM! NYEH HEH HEH!"
"uh, ok, paps, but be careful."
"OH, RIGHT. I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM AN EXCELLENT TEAMMATE, AFTER ALL."
"Alright, I'm gonna throw now."
"WAIT, HOLD ON A SECOND. LET ME GO FIRST."
"Uh, alright, sure."
"alright, ready, frisk?"
"Yeah, sure."
"ALRIGHT, HERE WE GO!"
Papyrus threw the ball of snow at the kid.
"OH MY GOD, THAT'S TOO HARD! I CAN'T MOVE!"
"uh, sorry."
"It's okay."
"ALRIGHT, YOU'RE UP NOW."
"Alright."
Frisk threw the ball at the kid.
"HEY, THAT WAS TOO HARD!"
"Sorry, I'm still getting used to this," Frisk said, scratching their head.
"IT'S ALRIGHT, JUST BE CAREFUL NEXT TIME," Papyrus said, putting a hand on Frisk's shoulder.
"Ok, I'll try."
"good throw, frisk."
"Thanks, Sans."
"YOU'RE WELCOME. NYEH HEH HEH! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AM QUITE GOOD AT TEACHING!"
"I thought you were teaching them how to throw a ball, not how to use a baseball bat."
"THAT'S WHAT I SAID! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, HAVE TAKEN THE LIBERTY OF ADDING A TOUCH OF MY OWN STYLE."
"Heh. Nice," Frisk said.
"HELLO, YOUNG HUMAN! IT'S GOOD TO SEE YOU, ALRIGHT?" Papyrus said, waving at the kid.
"Hey. You're a human, aren't you?" the kid asked.
"YES. WELL, ACTUALLY, I AM NOT."
"Yeah, I know, Papyrus is a monster." The kid said.
"THAT'S RIGHT! I AM, IN FACT, A MONSTER!"
"You know what I think is weird?" the kid asked.
"WHAT'S WEIRD?"
"I'm not afraid of you. Why is that?"
"WHY, I DON'T KNOW."
"You seem nice. So does your friend, Sans."
"yeah, thanks kid," Sans said.
"What's your name?" Frisk asked to the kid.
"My name's Charlie. What's yours?"
"I'm Frisk, and this is my friend, Papyrus."
"nice to meet ya, kiddo," Sans said, giving the kid a pat on the back.
"NICE TO MEET YOU, HUMAN!"
"Nice to meet you, too. Hey, Papyrus, are you a member of the Royal Guard?" Charlie asked.
"WHAT, ME? NO. BUT I AM VERY CLOSE TO BECOMING A MEMBER."
"Oh, that's cool. So, how many humans are there in the Underground?"
"well, there's frisk, and now you. so, that's two." Sans said.
"Really? Only two? I thought there'd be more." The kid said.
"there were a lot of other humans, but they're dead." Sans said.
"Oh, that's sad. How'd they die?"
"some of them starved, some of them were killed. the king, asgore, wants to collect seven human souls."
"Why does he want to collect them?" Frisk asked.
"he wants to break the barrier." Sans said.
"Oh, so we're trapped in here, aren't we?"
"kinda." Sans said with normality.
"Oh. Well, let's go, then."
"okay, sure. where do you wanna go now, kiddo?"
"Maybe we could go back to the surface," Charlie suggested.
"oh, good idea, kiddo. that's impossible, but we can try."
"Why is it impossible?" Frisk asked.
"we need a soul, remember? only a human soul can cross the barrier." sans said.
"Oh, yeah."
"but don't worry. maybe if the two of you go in direction to the castle were the king is, you could talk to him. he's very kind, he could help you."
"You think so?" Frisk asked.
"sure. however, you should pass first to waterfall, and after passing waterfall, you need to go to hotland, in direction to the core, at the end, an elevator should take you to the castle. i think. but, hey, don't look at me, i'm not the map guy." sans said.
"I don't understand a thing." Frisk said.
"waterfall is there, passing to the snowdin hall in the left. hotland is at the end of waterfall, in direction to the core. the elevator is here, near the resort, where mtt is, and it will lead you to the castle."
"Mtt? Who is that?"
"he's the robot. mettaton."
"Who is he?" Frisk asked.
"mettaton. the famous tv host. he's the best."
"I don't know him." Frisk said.
"What if we stop talking and get to the point, Frisk" Charlie said.
"Yeah, sure. See ya later, Sans."
"alright, buddy, see ya. take care, kiddo. paps, come here."
"YES, BROTHER?"
"don't be a nuisance, ok? make sure the kids don't die."
"GASP! WHY, OF COURSE! YOU CAN COUNT ON ME!"
"ok, thanks bro. now, if you excuse me, i have some naps to take."
"OF COURSE, BROTHER. YOU DESERVE A REST. GOODBYE!"
"bye."
Sans and Papyrus then went to his room and started to sleep.
"Well, Frisk, we must go first on waterfall." Charlie said.
"Alright, I guess." Frisk responded.
"I think we should follow the map." Frisk added.
"Uh, right, of course." Charlie said.
"Hey, Charlie, why don't we take a picture before going, like a memory? To remind ourselves that we were here."
"Well, that's a great idea. Here, you hold the phone, since you're taller."
"Yeah, sure."
Charlie took a photo with the cellphone.
"Alright, now we have a souvenir of the Underground."
"Yep. Now, we have to go."
"Right. Let's go."
The children followed the map, in direction to Waterfall.
