"We came as soon as we could," Dwight said.
Trudy's heart twisted to see how worried her parents both looked.
"We didn't believe it for a moment."
"Thank you for coming. It's so good to see you."
She opened her arms and hugged Dwight and Marsha to her tightly.
Marsha stood back and put her hands on Trudy's shoulders, studying her. She frowned. Her blue eyes were full of concern.
"I didn't expect the guard to leave us alone," she said after a few seconds.
Trudy smiled.
"Scarlet is… a friend. So it helps. Leland and Adrian are working on it."
"If anyone can figure this out it will be them."
"Yes. I'll be alright."
She was starting to believe it. She was glad her parents seemed to as well."
"So," Marsha asked, "Are you, alright sweetheart?"
"It's tough," Trudy admitted, "The hardest part isn't the hurting… It's at the end of the day when I have to be away from everyone I love."
Trudy's eyes filled with tears.
"We'll be here every day honey," Dwight said, "Twice a day".
"Oh… and I brought something for you," Marsha added, handing her a little box.
"Thanks, Mom," Trudy said, "I love you guys."
As soon as it was time to leave Trudy hugged her parents goodbye.
"We'll see you tomorrow," Dwight promised
Marsha nodded. They'd talk to Adrian and find out what time he was coming and they'd come at a different time so Trudy would have time with both Adrian and them.
Adrian came to see Trudy that night. They spent a long time talking. When Adrian had to leave, Trudy slept through the night.
Leland could tell Karen was having trouble sleeping. He put his hand on her back.
"Kar," he said gently, "You okay?"
"I am," she said, "I was just thinking about the time I got mad at you… before we got back together when you didn't bring the kids back until 4 AM without calling. I'm sorry I was so hard on you."
Leland stroked her hair.
"You have nothing to be sorry about," he said firmly, "I might have reacted the same way if I were in your shoes."
"But," Karen said, "When the roles were reversed… when I was the one who messed up you treated me with nothing but kindness, compassion, love, respect, and understanding."
"It's not about keeping score." Leland told her gently but firmly, "It's just about doing the best we can each day and learning."
Karen said "You're right. You're right. How was your day? I guess you couldn't sleep too well either."
The lights reflected off the ceiling as a car passed by outside. One of their neighbors was a nurse and came home from their hospital shift.
Leland sighed. "I'm worried about Trudy. I'm worried about Monk. I think I know what's going on. But I have to be careful."
"Rickover."
"I just need to prove it, make it airtight."
Karen nodded. Rickover was bad news.
"Just let me know if there's anything I can do to help?"
Leland nodded.
The next day Leland met up with Monk after the roll call was over. They went into Leland's office.
"Monk," Leland said, "I wrote a list of people who would have a motive. Rickover is the first person on that list."
"Oh yeah," Adrian agreed, "He's evil alright."
Adrian knew that years ago, Rickover had committed a horrible crime against Trudy. She was only fourteen and he threatened to have her family killed if anyone ever found out. Now Trudy was thinking about revealing the truth. That would have given him great motivation to frame her and sentence her to death.
"We need to investigate him," Leland said, "But we need to do it without him knowing."
