Chapter 1: Beginning
"Let silver and steel be the essence.
Let stone and the archduke of contracts be the foundation
Let humanity be color I pay tribute to
Let rise a wall against the wind that shall fall
Let the four cardinal gates close.
Let the three-forked road from the crown reaching unto the Kingdom rotate.
I hereby declare.
Your body shall serve under me.
My fate shall be your sword.
Submit to the backingof the Holy Grail
If you will submit to this will and this reason… Then answer!
An oath shall be sworn here!
I shall attain all virtues of all of Heaven.
I shall have dominion over all evils of all of Hell!
From the Seventh Heaven, attended to by three greet words of power,
Come forth from the ring of restraints,
Protector of the Holy Balance!"
...
"Ma.. naka.. why..?" A grown man used all the remaining strength he had to ask his daughter who only gave him an angelic smile.
Not far from them.
A little girl could only stare blankly as she watched her father being killed by her own sisterr.
"Otou-san.. Otou-san.. no..this must be a lie, please wake up! Otou-san!!"
"Otou-san!! Otou-san!!!!"
...
"Otou-san!!!"
"Hah.. hah.. ha.. haaah.."With a gasp the girl woke up from her nightmare. A nightmare that always haunted her as a child and now that nightmare has come back to haunt her for the last few days.
A nightmare containing her last memories of her father and sister, in the tragedy known as the Holy Grail War.
The girl, Ayaka Sajyou, could only bow her head wearily when remembering bad memories from ten years ago. Before his death, hee father Hiroki Sayjou had said that sooner or later she too would be involved in the next holy grail war. But Ayaka doesn't want that, she's afraid. She was afraid of the Holy Grail War but... as her father said, the girl was destined to take part in the Holy Grail War.
In front of the mirror in her bathroom, Ayaka could only bitterly see a black spot in the middle of her chest. The spots had appeared since six days ago, when she first saw the spots, she thought it was just a skin disease, but after she started to feel the flow of her magical energy moving towards the black spots. She immediately ran to her father's room and rummaged through it to find her father's old records and finally found out that it was a sign for the person chosen to participate in the holy grail war.
Ayaka became so frightened that she even fell ill for two days.
Unlike her older sister Manaka Sayjou who could only be described as a jewel from a fairyland, she was a genius who was highly skilled in Magecraft, she also had a beautiful face with blonde hair that she inherited from her mother. As for Ayaka, she was just an average magus of both quality and quantity, average magic circuits. Appearance is also more innocent and more like a loner Japanese girl, the glasses she wears to help her eyesight are another factor to support it.
After putting on her school uniform, Ayaka continued her usual morning activities.
She opened the refrigerator to look for ingredients to cook for breakfast. Eggs, butter, and plain bread were all she found, so she just had a fried egg, buttered toast and a cup for breakfast. There was no morning enthusiasm for the girl, she just ate her breakfast gloomily at a table filled with good memories from the past that couldn't possibly be brought back.
After breakfast she went to the garden behind her house, it was a greenhouse inherited from her mother, there were many things in the greenhouse, but three things stood out the most. The first was the various plants that she had taken good care of, the second was the pile of books her mother had collected, and the third were the white doves that nested in the greenhouse.
Chirp after chirp sounded from the doves as if they were welcoming Ayaka into the greenhouse. Ayaka just walked away ignoring all the chatter.
She walked towards the dove that was in her birdcage. The girl grabbed a dove and brought it to a table not far from the cage, she then took a knife that was in the desk drawer, she planned to decapitate the dove to get its blood which she would use for her Magecraft.
Maybe because the sight of the sharp object already held high made its survival instincts active, the dove tried its best to escape from Ayaka's grip but unfortunately that didn't work and Ayaka started swinging the knife towards the dove's head.
Braak!!
"Haah.. haaah.. haah.." The knife was only a few centimeters away from the dove's head, the girl failed again to do what her late father had ordered her to do, but she didn't regret that she was relieved that she failed, she never had the heart to hurt her living things. In exchange for the pigeon's blood, she ended up injuring one of her own fingers and using her own blood as she had always done so far.
After bandaging her wound she decided to immediately go to her school, she wasn't a girl who had many friends, but perhaps Ayaka didn't even have any friends at all. At school she was the image of a quiet, loner girl, not that no one tried to chat with her, it's just that Ayaka always struggled with that so-called friendship.
"Hey Sayjou-san want to have lunch with us?" Asked a girl sitting next to her.
Ayaka looked at the girl while looking down.
"S-sorry.. but thanks for the offer." She said in a low voice but enough for other girls to hear.
"I see... okay." The girl immediately left to join her other friends.
Ayaka could only watch the girl's famously friendly back go away from her.
"Ah.. like this again huh..., I'm a bad girl." Now she could only reproach herself.
The rest of the day went on as usual except that this time it looked like it was going to rain, after school, Ayaka then took the time to go home first to get an umbrella, then after that she went to the flower shop to buy three bouquets of red roses which would be taken to the place to be visited next.
But..
Drops..
"Ah..? I better hurry."
...
Criiiiinnnggg!!!!! Criiiiinnnggg!!!!! Criiiiinnnggg!!!!!
A telephone ringing could be heard filling the counter of a Chinese restaurant in the city of Misaki.
"Yeah, with the Mad Bear Chinese restaurant here!"
...
Drop, drop, drop, drop by drop the rain fell profusely, flushing the city of Tokyo. Even though the weather was bad, the girl continued on her way.
She finally arrived at her destination, she was currently in front of the gate of one of the cemetery complexes in Tokyo.
With one breath, Ayaka then stepped into the cemetery complex, while gloomy she now stood in front of three graves, these were the graves of the Sajyou family which consisted of the graves of her mother, father and older sister.
'Am I going to join you guys soon..?' she thought.
For a young girl with thoughts like that, when she was in the middle of the cemetery area at night it was starting to be covered in fog due to the heavy rain.
Obviously this is a bad thing.
Ayaka then placed a wreath on each of the graves. This was the least she could do to honor the three people she cared about.
The girl just stood still while looking at the three tombstones in front of her.
Then heard footsteps passing through the puddles created by the rain.
"You must be Ayaka Sajyou. I'm sorry for what happened to your family."
Ayaka just stood still and didn't turn around to face that person.
From his voice Ayaka could clearly see that the person behind her was a man.
"Ah.., but soon they will find out the truth-"
"Please.. please go."
Ayaka cut off the stranger's words coldly, before she could finish her sentence.
"Midnight later, being ten years has passed." That person clearly didn't care about what Ayaka wanted.
"In the end you were able to repeat the battle, but why haven't you started any preparations yet?"
"I.." That question had clearly had a strong impact on Ayaka. While tightening her grip on the umbrella and after taking a breath to calm herself down. Slowly, Ayaka turned to look at the man.
The man had short gray hair and was wearing a priest's attire, he must be from the holy church.
"...I, don't want anything from the holy grail." Ayaka firmly told the mysterious priestess her wish. She didn't want to be involved in the ritual that had taken her family away.
The man just stared at her for a few moments, then closed her eyes.
"Everything is a victim of cause and effect." He then brought his head closer to Ayaka's right ear, and whispered a sentence that crushed any courage she had.
"You won't be able to run away."
...
Run
"Hah.. hah.. hah.."
While panting, the girl continued to run as fast as she could towards her house.
Arriving at home, she immediately locked all the entrances to her house and Ayaka also added a talisman paper to strengthen the door, she immediately curled up on the sofa while covering herself with a blanket.
The house already has a bounded field left by her parents that will inform her and protect her when something with evil intentions enters her house, but... obviously that won't be enough for the danger that will come to her.
She also wore a magic ring on her finger, it was a mystic code left by her mother.
"I don't want to be like them!"
With her body starting to shake with fear, the girl began to let out screams of frustration.
"Hic.. from the start I couldn't! There's no way I could! Hic.." Crying started to be heard from under the blanket that covered the poor girl's body.
"I won't be like Onee-chan! Hic.. this has nothing to do with me.. hic ..please leave me alone..."
The girl could only curl up crying and hoping that she would soon be awakened by the light of the rising sun. And turn all this into just a nightmare...
...
"How could I get lost like this!!"
...
Time went on and the girl had stopped crying.
'..How much time has passed?' She thought
Maybe an hour has passed? Two hours? Or maybe there hasn't even been an hour yet? She does not know. All she knew was that his life was still in danger as long as morning had not come.
Woof! woof! woof! Bang! Bang!
The girl's whole body was resisting now. There was much sound of dogs barking and all kinds of loud banging.
Her home's bounded field system began sending information about the arrival of dozens of dogs that had raided her home.
Ayaka began to channel her magical energy into the ring on her finger and adjusted her breathing to prepare herself.
She didn't want to die and had no one to turn to, therefore she could only rely on herself.
Two dogs came after breaking one of the windows of her house, Ayaka immediately got up and used her Mystic code to shoot crow feathers at the dogs and it was strong enough to kill them.
Other dogs started coming through the broken window, Ayaka immediately ran along the hallway of her house while shooting crow feathers at the dogs.
Just when she thought the dogs was over..
"Oh, so you're the little mistress of this house."
'N-no.. it can't be.. a servant' Panic began to fill Ayaka as she saw who was standing in her way.
A tall man clad in ancient armor with feather ornaments and in one hand held a spear.
"Do not come close!!!" Ayaka frantically shot crow feathers at the man but the man with just one swing of her spear managed to ward off all of them.
Boom!!
...
Ciiiit!!
"W-what happened here..?"
Boom!!
"What's that?"
...
"This black magic is ancient too, but it's a bit wasteful, you know..."
"Ack.."
A simple swing of the man's spear had not only rendered her attack useless but had also sent a gust of wind strong enough to destroy the walls around him and send Ayaka flying until she hit the wall very hard.
With great difficulty and perhaps because of her fear, Ayaka managed to ignore the pain of the attack just now and immediately got up and ran towards the greenhouse in her backyard while shooting crow feathers at the Servant who was chasing her.
When she got there she immediately locked the entrance door and used wicthcraft to grow plants that would strengthen the door but...
Boom!!
It was clearly a wasted effort, from what she learned from the notes her father had on the holy grail war.
Every Master will summon one familiar, but it is no ordinary familiar. What Masters summoned were Heroic Spirits, heroes from the past, that was a legend in itself.
There was no way a human in today's era could fight against a Servant, let alone an average magus like Ayaka.
The explosion had knocked Ayaka to the ground, the girl was clearly in a lot of pain and fear now.
"P-please... don't come closer! I'm not a participant in the holy grail war! Please l-let me go!" Every time the Servant took a step towards her, Ayaka could only crawl backwards with her hands, dragging her lower body which was difficult to move?
Maybe because of injury or maybe because of fear.
"I have nothing personal against you, but my Master wants you dead. I will end this quickly."
'Ah.. is this the end..? ..Die like this? ...? ...? ...! No! No! I don't want to die!'
The Servant raised his spear and prepared to stab the girl's heart.
"A-anyone.. help me.. Otou-san.." A desperate whisper came from her lips.
When the Servant started swinging her spear, Ayaka could only close her eyes and resignedly accept her death.
Clanks!!
"..!"
A sound of clashing metal was all he heard just now.
Clank! Clank! Clank! Clank!!!
Hesitantly, Ayaka slowly opened her eyes.
'B-bear?' she thought.
What was in front of her was a brown bear with an orange bandana on bear's head while holding a spoon and fork in each hand and the bear's expression was clearly angry?
'Who..?'
No, it wasn't a bear but a teenage boy wearing a shirt with a picture of an angry bear on the back.
'What happened?'
The teenager was holding a katana and was trying to withstand the barrage of attacks from Servants who wanted to kill her.
The two fighters engaged in a conversation but she had no idea what they were talking about.
'It's useless, it's impossible against a Servant..'
The teenager started to get overwhelmed when the Servant started to get more serious, his clothes started to be torn and his blood started to splatter due to attacks that he couldn't block but...
'... Why..? Why did he protect me?'
He still stood up to protect a girl like her.
"Hey! What are you doing arg.. hurry up! I.. can't hold it in.. any longer- aargh.."
The teenager screamed at the girl but her mind was in disarray right now trying to process what the teenager was saying.
Finally blood stained the girl's beautiful face when the teenager's left shoulder was pierced by the Servant's spear.
And with one swing the Servant threw the teenage boy aside and without wasting immediately aimed his spear to stab Ayaka.
'No! ... ... Aah.. now I'm going to have other people die because of me.. but.. I.. I just don't want to die!'
Blood started flowing from her chest as the girl's body collapsed forward carried by the momentum of the Servant who pulled out his spear, the blood began to spread and merged with the boy's blood.
As the Servant starts walking to finish off the teenage boy...
Two dazzling lights shone in two different places within the greenhouse.
Two magic circles were created where each light appeared.
Two distinct figures connected by holy swords heard their calls.
Somewhere in Tokyo, the second Greater Grail has processed a ritual to summon these two Heroic Spirits.
The light was so dazzling that the Servant had to close his eyes but as soon as he closed his eyes he immediately regretted it because the next thing he knew was another Servant had appeared on the scene who had instantly attacked him and sent him flying away.
His spear broke in two from the attack.
"Not bad.. alright then I'll- what? Tsk, we'll meet again later." And with that the Servant disappeared.
At this time the conditions in the greenhouse could only be described with the word "Beautiful", most of the place was filled with beautiful flowers blooming with their sweet fragrance along with the warm air.
Ayaka no longer felt pain in her chest, only traces of blood were there without any injuries as if nothing had ever happened.
She then took a sitting position while looking at the figure of a blonde silver knight in front of her.
The knight then turned around to look at the girl while showing his charming smile.
"I'm ask you, are you my Master? Yes, that should be something I wanted to tell you as a mandatory formality as a Servant but it's like we'll digress for later.." he said as he turned the other way in a combat ready stance.
Ayaka, who was still trying to process all the events that had happened, also followed the direction the knight was headed.
There.. not far from where they are.
Standing was an extremely beautiful girl with long blonde hair, she was wearing an outfit that was a mix of royal gown, armor, and fur coat. there is a beautiful golden crown atop her head.
The girl stood protectively against the mysterious teenager who had helped her.
'..Is he also a participant in the Holy Grail War?'
Ayaka's pair of blue eyes met the golden brown eyes of that mysterious teenager.
...
