The sun was rising as Leland looked out the hospital window. He was holding his new daughter. He thought about how life can give surprises. The baby focused her eyes on his face. He smelled the sweetness of the baby as her warm weight nestled into him.

"And you're the biggest and best surprise ever." He whispered, "When Mommy wakes up we'll start to see about getting you all setup. And we have to think of your name."

Leland heard a rustling behind him.

He turned to the bed. "I'm awake now. I think it's time for me to feed her."

Leland passed the baby over and Karen soon had her suckling contentedly.

"I was thinking we should call her Rose."

"For our favorite flower."

The first time Leland and Karen celebrated her birthday he didn't know what to bring her so he'd chosen a dozen yellow roses.

Wherever they lived they'd always tended a rose bed.

"I love that," Leland added grinning widely

Karen smiled.

"I'm okay here. I don't mind if you want to go check on the kids and take a shower. "

"I'll have to get some things for this little lady and I'll bring you a comfortable outfit."

"Thank you. You're the best."

"You're pretty amazing yourself."

He turned his phone back on after getting outside the hospital. There was a lot of waiting messages. First, he called Karen's parents and talked to Jennifer, Jared, and Max. He felt relieved they were safe although it was a bit of an adjustment for them to find out they had a little sister. He promised to come by and take them to meet Rose as soon as he could.

His next priority was to call Monk. He knew he couldn't let himself get distracted from finding out who had framed Trudy and threatened his own family."

The phone rang once and Monk picked up.

"Leland?"

"Hi Monk," Leland said, "I'm sorry I didn't call you right away. Something crazy happened."

"Is everything okay?" Adrian asked.

"I'm a father again," Leland said, "Karen gave birth to our fourth child. Her name is Rose."

"That's wonderful," Adrian said, "I'd love to meet her."

"Of course, you will," Leland promised, "But meanwhile, I need to talk to you about the case."

"Of course," Adrian said, "That's the most important thing right now."

"I spoke to a witness," Leland said, "I found out that Rickover is seeing a therapist. I got a subpoena for the notes of his case. Apparently, he is terrified that what he did would be revealed. So we have motive right there."

Adrian took a deep breath as he thought carefully.

"I suppose it's a start. I can work with that. Leland, I didn't mean that Rose isn't important. You should focus on your family."

Monk paused.

" After all this is big. How are you doing with it all?"

Leland was silent for a moment.

"Well, I'm tired."

Monk said "I understand it's one of the occupational hazards. "

Leland laughed.

"It definitely is. Really we're all starting to get over the shock. After all, it's a new start. It's a new chance."

Adrian felt a sense of hope. They could close in on Rickover. They would for Trudy. And for little Rose.

A couple of hours later, Adrian was sitting in the office of Dr. Bell.

"You said he was desperate to hide his secret. How desperate was he?"

"Well, Mr. Monk," Dr. Bell replied, "To put it simply it wouldn't surprise me if he orchestrated what happened himself. I have met your wife and I know she's not capable of murder. She has a pure heart. As a therapist, I'm not supposed to judge my clients but Ethan Rickover has the classic signs of a sociopath. Years ago he raped a 14-year-old girl and caused her to lose her baby girl who was born at 40 weeks stillborn. When I asked him about it he said, "It was an error in judgment". So when he overheard your wife telling you about what happened to her and that she was thinking of revealing it he knew he had to do something. I asked him what he did. He told me only the people who have to get hurt did."

Adrian felt a shudder run through him. He knew about the rape but he had no idea about the stillbirth or the pregnancy. He hated Ethan Rickover with hate that knew no bounds but he knew he had to stay calm for Trudy's sake… and not rile up Rickover.

Adrian drove to the store. He came out again with a cart full. He had a feeling it was too much but he thought since he didn't know what the new baby would need he'd better get as much as he could for her.

"It's not that we're not grateful Monk. We really appreciate it especially because we weren't ready for a newborn at all." Leland remarked

Leland's mouth twitched in spite of himself.

"What's so funny then?" Adrian demanded with a small smile.

"How do I put this… I think you must have bought out the whole infant aisle."

They both burst out laughing and it felt good. After a few minutes, they had gathered control.

Finally, Monk said, "I do have some news I wanted to talk to you about."

"Sure. Let's sit."

Adrian told him about everything Dr. Bell said.

"Do you think it's possible," Monk asked, "That whoever took Jennifer may have been the one to set Trudy up?"

"It is possible," Leland replied after thinking a moment, "But there are many possibilities. The one thing we do know is that Rickover had set it up."

Monk ran a hand through his hair.

"What concerns me," Leland said, "is we have to come up with some plan to find out how the evidence pointed to Trudy. Someone really knew what they were doing."

"I think one of the first things we have to do is interview the jury members and find out why they found her guilty. That will give us more to go on."
