When Billy slid through her bedroom window while she worked on her English essay, Sidney just thought he wanted to extend a romantic gesture…until she saw his red-rimmed eyes, tightly set jaw, and clenched fists.
"Billy?" Sidney asked, concerned about her boyfriend as she gave him her undivided attention. "What's wrong?"
"She left me."
"What?"
Billy's fists twitched, like he wanted to hit something. "My mom," he hissed through clenched teeth, his eyes full of grief and anger. "She left me."
"What?" Sidney breathed, her eyes wide.
Billy practically threw himself onto her bed, glaring up at the ceiling while he clutched her favorite stuffed red tiger to his chest. "She left me," he repeated over and over. Tears began to pool in his eyes and he cursed himself. He didn't want to fucking cry, but his body betrayed him.
Sidney hurried over to him and sat down behind him, her legs next to his sides as she gently lifted his head and placed it on her lap. She ran her fingers through his hair, knowing that he liked that. She felt his body relax slightly, but he was still mostly tense. "What happened?" She asked gently. "Your mom wouldn't just up and leave you for no reason. It doesn't sound like her."
"It's not," Billy replied, gripping the stuffed tiger harder. "But she wasn't thinking straight because she found out that my dad was cheating on her."
"What?"
"He fucking cheated on her!" Billy shouted, throwing the tiger to the floor and jumping off of his girlfriend's bed. He faced her, his brown eyes dark with fury. "That fucking bastard cheated on my mom! My mom, Sid! The woman who did everything, who went above and beyond to be a good wife and a good mother! She's been loyal to him, she's taken care of him, she's given up so fucking much and this is what she gets for her efforts? Her husband fucking some other bitch who couldn't keep her legs together to think that maybe screwing a married man wasn't such a good idea!"
Sidney stared at him, frozen in her spot. Her boyfriend was so angry and it honestly frightened her. Billy had a temper and though he was reserved for the most part, he would explode when something truly upset him. When he exploded, he'd turn into someone she didn't recognize, someone who honest to God scared her.
But through the anger, she also saw the pain in his eyes and that pain broke her heart. She knew how much her boyfriend loved his mother, how close he was to her and how he looked up to her for being so strong and caring towards everyone, and to know that his own father broke her heart and made her leave…it tore him up inside.
Tears of sympathy pricked in the backs of her eyes as he continued his tirade, his voice tinged with agony as well as rage: "She just left me, Sid! I mean, I get that she doesn't want to be with a cheating bastard anymore, but what about me? What did I do to her that made her leave me, too? Was I just not worth it? Am I…" he began pacing as his voice lowered. "Am I just not enough?"
"No," Sidney breathed, instantly rising from the bed and making him stop pacing. The way he watched as she moved, as if he was afraid that she'd leave him too…it made her heart squeeze painfully in her chest. He never had any problems with her going anywhere, but she knew now that all he could think about was if he'd lose his mother and his girlfriend in the same night.
Sidney moved forward, bringing her boyfriend into her arms and holding him close. She tucked his head against her chest so he could feel her warmth and hear her heartbeat. She wanted him to know that she was real and that she'd always be there for him. She would never abandon him like his mother just did.
"You're worth it, baby," she told him, moving backwards until they fell back onto her bed, Billy's head still on her chest and her hand running soothingly up and down his back. "You're enough, I promise, and it will be okay."
"How?" He asked. He didn't sound angry anymore, just exhausted.
Sidney kissed her boyfriend's head. "Because I'm here," she answered. "I'll never leave you. Do you trust me?"
"Of course I do. You're the only one I can trust right now," Billy admitted. His body was beginning to relax now, but the ache in his chest at his mother abandoning him without any hesitation on her part remained.
"Then trust me when I promise you that you'll always have me," Sidney told him, sensing his turmoil. "I won't cheat on you like your dad did to your mom and I won't abandon you like your mom did. I love you so much, Billy, and I won't hurt you…you can trust me."
Her loving words and soothing gestures made his eyes heavy with emotion. Most of that emotion was fatigue, but it was also love. Not only could he hear the honesty in his girlfriend's words, but he could feel it, too. Sidney wouldn't be like his parents. She wouldn't hurt him and make him question everything he ever knew. Sidney was beautiful and kind and truthful and most of all…she was faithful. He didn't care what everyone whispered about her because of her mother's reputation. Sidney was nothing like Maureen Prescott.
Sidney was the only good thing in his life now, his entire world now that his original one got turned upside down. Everything fucking hurt, but he knew that Sidney would be there to hold him, to love him when he couldn't love himself, just like tonight.
He knew that he'd do anything to keep her, to ensure that she never broke the promise she just made that he'd always have her.
Sidney Prescott meant everything to him and he'd never, ever let her go…
