"Okay, what was your deal today?" Sidney demanded as she stormed into Billy's room at his house, where they'd gone after school ended to spend time together. His father, the workaholic lawyer that he was, had been gone since early that morning and most likely wasn't due to return until late that evening, so they had time.
Billy looked up, scowling. "I have no idea what you're talking about," he claimed, crossing his arms over his chest.
Sidney rolled her eyes. "Bullshit," she snapped, ignoring his surprised stare. She wasn't confrontational by nature and hardly ever swore, but her boyfriend acted like a dick and it honestly pissed her off, so she decided to act out of character to get the point across that she wasn't happy with the way the day progressed. "You acted like a complete asshole today to Randy and he didn't even do anything to you!"
Billy's eyes narrowed and his jaw clenched, his simmering anger mounting into an explosive fury. "Didn't do anything to me?" He repeated, getting up from his bed and stalking towards her. To her credit, despite his intimidating gait, she didn't back down. He pushed aside the glimmer of pride he felt at that and continued, "I think blatantly flirting with my girlfriend right in front of me qualifies as doing something to me."
"He was not flirting with me!" Sidney exclaimed. "He was just returning the book he borrowed from me after he finished reading it last week!"
"So, holding your hand and eye fucking you, then, that was just him expressing just how much he loved the book, huh?"
"What are you talking about?"
"You can't tell me that you didn't notice the way he was looking at you!" Billy exclaimed loudly, making her jump a bit at the volume. "He was staring at you like you were his and not mine!"
Sidney bit her lip, an equal mixture of frustration and understanding flooding through her very being at his response.
Randy Meeks had a crush on her. Sidney knew that ever since they were children, she was the object of the horror fanatic's affections. It flattered her, knowing that he cared for her so much, but she couldn't return his love. He was one of the best friends she ever had: loving, sweet, funny, and incredibly loyal. She knew that he'd be like that as a boyfriend, but he was just never her type.
Billy Loomis, however, was her type. Reserved, mysterious, and just a little bit dangerous, Billy was the guy that every mother told her daughter to stay away from, but the second she met him, Sidney wanted him. He felt the same and it didn't take long for him to ask her out. They'd been together for nearly a year and were still going strong.
Despite how protective and loving he truly was to her, Billy could also get very jealous and possessive over her whenever other boys showed interest. It didn't matter that she'd make it clear to them and him that he was the one she loved and that she'd never leave or cheat on him; he got into several fights in her defense and even though she appreciated his need to show everyone how much he cared, she'd become upset at what she believed to be implications that he didn't trust her.
"Billy," Sidney began calmly, but she couldn't hide the irritation tinging her voice. "How many times do I need to tell you that I do not like Randy no matter how much he likes me? I'm not dating him, I'm dating you!"
Rather than reassure him, her words served to further upset him. "It doesn't matter how many times you tell me if you let him flirt with you like that!" He said. He was getting louder and his neck was reddening, two signs that he was angry.
Whenever she noticed those signs, she would back down and let him relax, but she was incensed now. "I'm sorry, I let him flirt with me? How much of this is really you being upset that Randy flirts with me despite knowing that I don't return his love?"
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"Billy, be honest! You don't trust me!"
"Sidney, you're being ridiculous!"
"No, I'm not!" She practically screamed. "You know all of the rumors about my mom, how she's such a whore that she lets every guy in town take his turn! You think I'm going to eventually take after her, don't you? That's why this upsets you so much! You think I'm going to cheat on you!"
"For fuck's sake, Sidney!" Billy groaned, raising his hands to run them through his hair to try to distract himself so he wouldn't go off on his girlfriend for her insane comments. Of course he didn't believe she'd ever cheat on him! He was just so afraid of losing her that every single guy was competition in his eyes, especially the one who's had feelings for her since they were children, before he ever met her. Randy was the only one who could actually take Sidney from him and he didn't want that. Not at all.
But when he looked at Sidney again to convey that to her, he froze because as he did, he watched her flinch away from him, her hands rising into a defensive position as she hunched her body so she was as small as humanly possible.
"Sid…" He whispered, watching her lower her hands and straighten herself. "Sid, did you…?"
Did she think that he was going to hit her?
Just the thought of putting his hands on her like that made him sick, all of his annoyance melting into despair at the idea that he could ever abuse her, her—Sidney Prescott: the sweetest girl he's ever met, his first and only love, his entire world.
Sidney's eyes widened as she watched the grief overtake her boyfriend, his face twisting with horror. "No," she replied, stepping forward and gently taking his hands into her own. "No, I would never think that you would hit me."
"Then why did you flinch and act like you were protecting yourself from me?" He asked, his heart breaking.
"It's not you," she said softly, leading him over to his bed and sitting them both down so they were facing each other.
"Then what is it?" He asked gently, squeezing her hands.
Sidney took in a deep breath and blew it out slowly before she looked up at him. "Before you moved here, I had a boyfriend. His name was Jacob and he was a really good guy at first: always sweet to me, protective, wanting what was best for me…"
Billy felt a sick foreboding well up within him.
"He, um, he wanted me to have sex with him, but I wasn't ready and it was like he became a different person. He accused me of not wanting to have sex because I was already cheating on me with someone else and when I denied it, he…" her chest heaved with a small sob. "He hit me. He called me a whore, slut, every name in the book and he told me that he'd spread it around that I was like my mom if I told anyone about what he did, so I kept quiet, but then he…"
"You don't have to continue, baby," Billy told her, rage mixing with the concern he felt watching his girlfriend struggle with her story. How dare this fucking bastard put his hands on his angel on Earth all because she wasn't ready to have sex! He could fucking gut him if he knew where he was! Oh yes, he'd make sure this Jacob guy would get a slow and agonizing death for hurting his girl.
"No," Sidney sniffled, snapping him out of his vengeful haze. "I want to talk about it and you deserve to know."
She squeezed his hands tighter and shakily continued: "I was working with Randy on a school project and he was over at my house one day. I was getting something to drink when I tripped coming back to the table and Randy caught me before I could fall. I ended up falling into his lap, our faces only inches apart, and Jacob walked in and he saw us."
No.
Tears filled Sidney's eyes and spilled down her cheeks. "Jacob kicked Randy out and he started advancing on me. He was so angry, Billy, and he wasn't listening to me. He beat me that day so badly that I had to go to the hospital. I had bruises for weeks, my ribs were sore, and my lip was busted. I was in so much pain."
She broke down then and fell into his chest. He wrapped his arms around her, smoothing down her hair with one hand while the other rubbed soothing circles on the small of her back. Feeling how badly she trembled against him devastated and infuriated him. No wonder she always avoided conflict as much as she could; some asshole put his hands on her in ways that no man should ever put his hands on the woman he claimed he loved.
Billy closed his eyes, making a silent vow that he would do whatever it took to ensure Sidney's safety. She deserved that and more.
"What happened after, baby?" He asked.
Sidney sniffled and pulled back so their eyes met again. "Tatum came over because Randy called her. He thought that I'd need her after arguing with my boyfriend, but when she saw me on the kitchen floor, unconscious and beaten, she was terrified and she called her brother since Dewey had just become an officer at the time. They took me to the hospital and after I explained everything, they arrested him. Jacob had to serve some time in jail before I put a restraining order on him. He and his family left town and it was the last I ever saw of him."
Billy relaxed a little upon hearing that Jacob didn't get away with it, that he was punished and no longer living in Woodsboro. Some of the murderous rage dissipated at the news and now all he was focused on was Sidney.
"That explains a lot…Sid, I'm so sorry," he said.
Sidney shook her head. "It wasn't your fault. I should have told you."
"But my anger—"
She placed a finger on his lips, silencing him immediately. "I don't like your anger, but I know you would never hurt me like he did," she told him. "You're protective and loving, not controlling the way he was. You hate that Randy is my friend, but you never go further. You weren't even going to hit me, just run your fingers through your hair like you do when you're trying to calm down, and I flinched away anyway because of my own trauma. I'm sorry for that."
"Don't," Billy replied quickly. "Don't be sorry. You were in an abusive relationship. You don't have to be sorry for reacting the way that you did."
Sidney offered him a watery smile. She was broken and he knew that, but he still loved her. She appreciated him so much more than he knew. She never wanted to be apart from him.
As if he was reading her mind, Billy brought her back into his arms and kissed the top of her head, relishing in the way that she instantly curled up against him as if he was her lifeline. "I swear that you'll always be safe around me, Princess," he promised. "I'll never give you a reason to be afraid of me."
