It was a normal day at Woodsboro High and Sidney was sitting, her back leaning against her boyfriend Billy's chest, sitting Indian style between his legs. Stu, Tatum, and Randy were next to them, Stu nuzzling into Tatum's neck while Randy gagged and teased them about their close proximity. They were eating lunch in their usual spot at the large water fountain in the center of campus.
"You guys want to have a movie night this weekend?" Stu asked.
"You mean like an actual movie night or a 'movie night' where you put on a movie and all of the couples sit there making out while the third wheel just awkwardly eats popcorn and tries to block out the sound of smacking lips?" Randy replied sarcastically, popping an m&m into his mouth as he stared at Stu with a rather scornful expression on his face.
Sidney blushed slightly at the implication as Billy's chest rumbled with a low chuckle.
"Someone's jealous," Stu sang.
"Shut the fuck up, I am not. I just want to actually watch the movie instead of throwing up in my mouth watching my friends make out."
"You wouldn't feel that way if a girl would actually look your way."
"Oh, fuck you."
"Sorry, but I'm happy with Tate and I don't roll that way, but if I did, you wouldn't be my type."
Sidney popped some of her trail mix into her mouth as she watched Stu and Randy squabble, laughing softly when Tatum met her gaze and rolled her eyes, making a gesture with her hands that they were both idiots.
As she ate, however, she began to feel weird. The back of her throat, ears, and lips itched and her skin felt tight and hot as if she'd just received a sunburn. She squirmed uncomfortably against Billy, prompting him to ask her if she was alright. She nodded, but her discomfort grew and she cleared her throat, hoping that that would help.
It didn't and she began clearing it more often, her breathing coming out in short wheezes. Her hands trembled and she felt nauseated, her eyes and nose leaking as her body continued to attack her.
Behind her, Billy was staring at her in concern. "Sid? Sidney?" The worry in his voice and loudness of his tone interrupted Stu and Randy's quarrel and their friends turned to face them, their faces becoming just as concerned about Sidney as Billy's as they noticed her current physical state.
Sidney clasped at her throat with one hand, feeling it rapidly swelling and her fear turned to terror as her airways further constricted. Scrambling for the trail mix bag with her other hand, she brought it up to her eyes and quickly read over the ingredients: dried cranberries, mini chocolate chips, honey, peanuts…
Oh, no. She hadn't even noticed that peanuts were listed when she bought it in the cafeteria!
"B…Billy…" She could barely say his name, her throat was closing so fast.
"What's wrong, baby?" Billy immediately started rubbing her back in an attempt to comfort her.
"P…Pea…nuts," she squeaked out. She could feel hives breaking out now on her skin.
Billy's face turned white and his eyes instantly became alight with panic. "Oh, fuck," he said. He grabbed his bag and rummaged through it for a few seconds. Those seconds, though, were easily the most terrifying of his life as he heard and felt the raspy croaks of his girlfriend's breathing. Sidney was deathly allergic to peanuts and if she ingested even one, it meant severe danger, even—he could barely think the word when it came to her—death if he couldn't find her fucking…
"Yes!" He exclaimed, pulling free the spare epi pen that he always carried on him in case they ever ran into such a problem. Billy pulled up the skirt she was wearing to the point where her thigh was exposed, uncaring as to what anyone else thought, and jammed the needle down into her skin. He hissed out an apology to her when she jumped a bit in pain, but it was worth feeling her relax slightly when he pushed the plunger down and injected her allergy medicine into her bloodstream.
Within a few minutes, Sidney's breathing stabilized and she wasn't feeling the same effects as before, but the fear was still ever present and tears began sliding down her face.
"Come on, baby. We need to bring you to the hospital," Billy urged her, gently taking her arm and making her stand up, holding her as her shaky body leaned against his.
Billy held her close to him, closing his eyes for a moment as the relief that she was right there, alive and breathing, against him. If he hadn't had the epi pen in his bag, she would have….
No. He wasn't going to think like that. He did have her epi pen and she was okay. He wasn't going to torture himself by going down that road.
As he led his girl to his car, the sounds of their friends shouting their concerns and well wishes behind them, he felt how badly she was still trembling and rubbed her back in gentle circles. It killed him how scared she always was after an event like this, but she had every reason to be. She had a deadly allergy and if anyone gave her shit for it, heads were gonna roll.
As soon as she was safely buckled in on the passenger side, Billy circled around and got into the driver's side, inserting his key into the ignition and starting the car. In the back of his mind, he knew he'd have to answer to his parents when they heard that he'd left school at lunch, but he couldn't bring himself to care about what either of them thought. What he cared about right now was his girlfriend and her health. To hell with everyone else.
When they were driving to the hospital, Billy kept one hand on the steering wheel while the other took Sidney's hand across the console and squeezed it. "How are you doing, Princess?" He asked softly, sparing her a quick glance before returning his eyes to the road.
Sidney exhaled shakily, her eyes red from crying. "I-I'm okay," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. She was still terrified, but the weight of Billy's hand in her own helped her feel more at ease.
"Are you sure?"
She flashed him a watery smile and nodded. "Yeah," she promised. "Thank you."
Billy's eyebrows furrowed. "Why are you thanking me?" He asked, a bit bewildered.
"For keeping the epi pen in your bag. I don't know what I would have done if you didn't…" she trailed off, her words catching in her throat. The closest she ever came to death was when she ate peanuts; feeling her heart accelerate like that and the way she couldn't control her own body as it swelled to the point where she couldn't breathe…it was an awful experience and every time it happened she was always so afraid that she'd die on the spot, slowly and in complete agony.
But Billy was there. Her loving, protective boyfriend who always kept her spare epi pen in his bag and never took it out. He saved her life and she couldn't be any more grateful to him if she tried. He really was the best boyfriend she could have asked for.
Ignoring the flash of pain that came with acknowledging what could have happened to Sidney if he hadn't been there, Billy smiled and brought her hand up to his lips to press a lingering kiss to it. His smile grew when he heard her laugh and a blush spread across her pale cheeks in his peripheral vision and he lowered it to the console. "Never thank me for that. I'm your boyfriend, Sid; it's my job to watch out for you and be there when you need me."
"I love you, Billy," Sidney practically choked out, her throat swelling now from emotion and not from her allergy.
"I love you too, Sidney."
They drove the remainder of the way to the hospital to get her checked out by her doctor—as they always did despite Sidney's insistence that she was fine after the epi pen was administered—, a comfortable silence falling over them. All they could focus on was each other and how much they meant to one another, how much the thought of the other being lost to them forever would hurt. Neither would ever let that happen until sixty or seventy years from now until they were both old and white.
As they parked and left the car to head into the hospital doors, Sidney leaned against Billy for support and he happily pulled her closer, their expressions content despite the horrifying situation that took place not even half an hour ago.
They didn't let go of each other's hands. Not even once.
