"Susan!" Peter's voice echoed down the long hallway, catching his sister just before she disappeared into the kitchens.
"Yes?" she called back.
"Hold up, would you?" He arrived, a little out of breath, a moment later. "Were we expecting a delegation from The Lone Islands?"
"No," Susan said slowly, one hand still on the kitchen door. "I…" Her beautiful eyes flickered to the right, and Peter could see her running over their ever-changing list of guests. "The pleasant ambassador from Galma with three servants leaves tomorrow, the curt Calormene is staying who knows how long, and we have the party of forty from Archenland; the Lone Islands aren't due till…" she trailed off. "Oh, Peter, it was meant to be a week after the Archenlanders left, but—"
"But they extended their stay by another fortnight." Peter shook his head and sighed.
"I'm sorry, Peter. I must have overlooked it."
"Pax, Su. We're all learning. But where are we going to put them? There's a ship in the harbour, and half of them are coming ashore."
"We haven't the beds. Oh, Peter—"
"Can the steward find a place for them?"
"He's visiting family in the North."
"Buck up. There's all of Narnia, there must be somewhere—"
"I know somewhere we could put them." Lucy's voice piped up, and both older siblings looked around for her. Susan, after a moment, opened the kitchen door to reveal their little sister on the other side, a piece of toast in each hand.
"What are you doing?"
"I was getting toast for myself and Edmund. The Galman ambassador wanted to settle water rights or something with him before he left, so he hasn't had time to eat."
"Well done," Susan said, smiling at her.
"What's your idea of the Lone Islanders, Lu?"
"The Fauns are having their harvest celebration for the next seven days, and they often set aside several caves with comfortable beds. I had meant to go and spend at least one night there, but we've been so busy…but the Fauns won't mind giving one of the caves up. And it's already furnished."
"That's brilliant. Would you be the one to overlook the details? I think Su is caught up with feeding everyone, and I need to entertain the Archenlanders today."
"I'd like that," Lucy agreed, smiling.
"Perfect," Susan sighed. "They can join the festival tonight, and we can introduce them to everyone tomorrow. The Archenlander group is large enough there won't be a noticeable difference if we add more."
"There's a reason Aslan made four of us to hold up Narnia's crown." Peter put an arm around both sisters. "Upward and onward!"
