Sequel to Blackslik "Carry On"
"What is your diet looking like Mr. Reagan?" His hearing returned from spacing out, finally hearing, the second time the question was asked.
"My diet? I dunno, I eat good, I think." Jamie tried to find a more comfortable position in the chair.
"Really? because your food log for this month is looking a lot different." His therapist noticed. "I've known you since you were-"
"Seventeen," Jamie answered smiling.
"You're now twenty-three, it's been a bumpy last five ½ years, but through each bump, you've prevailed."
"I know diet is key! when I eat well, I feel well, I don't know why you know? that I'm not doing what I'm not supposed to do, sorry." He shrugged, smiling a bit.
"No apology necessary, how's your dating life?" She looked up from her notes.
"Uhh." He laughed awkwardly. "You know I don't do that."
"You've said that for the last five years Jamie, don't you ever want to get back out there?" She shared great concern.
"I do go out with women-" Jamie began to defend himself on the topic that made him uncomfortable to talk about.
"But you don't date them."
"I'm just not ready to be in that kind of relationship." He replied.
"You know I remember right after you and your high school girlfriend broke up, you weren't interested in coming to see me for a while, and along with the things in the last two years that has happened as well.." Jamie looked away, he struggled like hell the last two years especially.
"But I'm happy you've come to see me all these years, the time you were at Columbia and even twice a year when you went off at Harvard." She smiled genuinely.
"Of course, you helped me through the loss of my best friend."
"Mason." Jamie smiled, she remembers his name.
"Yeah, crazy he's been gone almost six years." Jamie bellowed.
"Jamie." Frank set down his mug.
"Hey dad," Jamie carried in a few groceries for Sunday dinner.
"So how was your day," Frank asked he knew every month on the 15th he would go see his therapist.
"Today was uh, good, but it hasn't really started, I'm late for work so I just thought I'd stop by and drop everything off." Jamie put his hands in his pockets ready to go it looked like.
"Well alright, Thank you for dropping off the roast-" Jamie was already at the door.
"Of course dad, see you tomorrow." The door shut and Jamie was gone.
"He left?" Henry walked into the kitchen.
"Yeah, he looked like he wasn't up for talking."
"Francis... when is he ever?" Henry huffed.
"Yeah well, we try don't we?" Frank clenched his mug handle.
"You didn't tell him..." Henry knew the answer to his question.
"I- I was getting there but he was just ready to go." Frank stuttered.
"You've known about it for a while, he's going to find out I think it would be better if he found out from you instead of finding out on his own." Frank sighed at his father's words.
"Reagan, late for roll call?" Vinny teased, Jamie turned around to the clock.
"Doesn't start for another ten minutes," Jamie grumbled continuing to walk to the men's locker room.
"We're still on tonight?" Jamie rolled his eyes. "Aye! come on Reagan, you promised..." Jamie paused buttoning up his shirt.
"No, you said I promised, I said I would try," Jamie recalled.
"Come on Jamie! chicks love it when you're around-"
"Yeah, because they bring their friend and I'm stuck with the boring one." Jamie slammed his locker. "No way." He walked out of the locker room.
"Reagan-" Vinny pursued Jamie, they both came to a halting stop hearing their fellow officers gossiping.
"I heard she's cute-" One of the officers began
"Who the hell is cute?" Vinny interrupted their conversation.
"Sarg said we have a new transfer coming in after roll call and-" Jamie just walked off in the middle of their conversation not having any interest whatsoever. After roll call finished the two partners returned to their squad car and hit the road, the first few hours were silent as could be, Vinny talked Jamie's ears off about potential 'dates' Vinny would have lined up. Jamie's thoughts began to pile up for the timing is completely ignoring him.
"12 - David this is central, respond for backup at the garden." Vinny nudged Jamie, both hands on the steering wheel driving.
"12-David responding." Jamie hung up the radio, "What did they say?"
"Are you okay?" Vinny noticed his spacing out.
"I'm good." Jamie voiced.
"Back up at the garden." Vinny verified zooming off.
"Ahh, it's a basketball game going on right?" Jamie complained. Vinny nodded. Being present at a game is usually a rookie's job. When they arrived at Madison Square Garden the number of pedestrians was insane, they used their radio to navigate through the crowd and find the area that needed assistance.
"Officer Cruz." An officer called out, Vinny nudged Jamie who was looking in a completely different direction.
"You guys needed backup?" Vinny asked,
"We did, I thought Central cleared it." Officer Witten responded. Jamie finally turned their way. "This is an Officer I'm training, Officer-"
"Janko." Jamie finished, completely shocked staring at a face he hadn't seen in six years. Eddie the same, she couldn't believe she was staring at her first love, someone she hadn't seen in the same time. Jamie broke the stare finding something else to look at.
"You two know each other?" Witten asked.
"Yeah." Eddie just couldn't take her eyes off Jamie.
"From high school," Jamie responded. " Do you guys still need assistance?" Jamie changed the subject and had a tone of being irritated.
"Well no-" Witten began.
"Since we're here, we can stay," Vinny replied, smiling at Witten. Jamie glanced at Vinny.
"Officer Cruz, I have to talk to you." Jamie led him away to a safe distance where they couldn't be heard.
"Stop making decisions for both of us. They don't need us so let's go." Jamie couldn't be more serious.
"I thought you knew Janko from High school." Vinny was lost.
"And and so what?" Jamie still was upset.
"Don't you want to catch up?" Jamie shook his head no. "Alright fine I'll ask Witten if she needs anything and if not we'll leave."
"Okay." Jamie agreed. The two walked back over to the other two officers.
"Everything good?" Witten asked. Jamie peeped over at Eddie who was staring at him but looked away...
"Everything is good," Vinny smiled. "Do you need any assistance from us?" he questioned.
"Well the more the merrier," Witten answered. Vinny looked at Jamie who just shrugged. Through the whole time that they were all together the conversation was mostly kept going between Vinny and Officer Witten, those two seem to be really hitting it off Vinny being the flirty person he was. Jamie, on the other hand, kept quiet and tried not to make eye contact with Eddie. Eddie though wanted to start a conversation with him but it was obvious he didn't want to have any sort of conversation.
"Officer Cruz and I are going to make around, you two stay here and keep your eyes open, Jamie was about to protest but the two already had walked off leaving Jamie and Eddie standing there in silence.
A few minutes of completely awkward silence "So how long have you been on the job?" Eddie thought she'd break the ice.
"Two ½ years," Jamie responded, leaving an awkward silence. Jamie bit his lip, his mother would slap him upside the head for not carrying a conversation. "You just started on the job?" Eddie was happy he asked her something, she wanted to have a conversation with him badly.
"Yeah, I actually just transferred to the 12th I was training in Staten Island." Jamie nodded. "So how has everything been? you know, your family? How's your mom and Joe and everyone?" Jamie stayed quiet for a while, he seemed as if he was just ignoring her, again it hurt her feelings a bit. "Maybe I shouldn't-"
"Mom and Joe…" He looked at her with blank eyes. "Died." her skin crawled like hell. Eddie never had a favorite when it came to Jamie's family but those two people held a special place in her heart.
"I- I didn't know... I'm sorry…" She said genuinely heartbroken. But hearing her say those two words again upset him. Luckily for him Vinny and Witten returned, he walked off even passing Vinny.
"Reagan are you good?" His question went unanswered. "If you guys need any other assistance just radio us." Vinny smiled, jogging off to his partner.
"Reagan, what's up?" Vinny sat into the driver's seat closing the door. He asked again and it went unanswered.
"Vinny we need to go." Jamie just looked extremely upset, something Vinny has never seen.
"We're not going anywhere until you tell me what's going on." Vinny removed the keys from the ignition.
"I used to date Janko in high school." Vinny surprisingly was not too surprised.
"You're upset because…" Jamie sighed he can't believe he was about to tell this story, but aside from Vinny being goofy and his partner Jamie loved him like a brother and trusted him like crazy and only after riding together for a year and a half.
"Because Vinny, I have never loved a girl like I loved her, she helped me through the loss of my childhood best friend, I didn't leave for college.. one huge reason was that I didn't want to leave her and she completely broke my heart," Vinny wide-eyed Jamie, never has Jamie talked about his feelings like this to him.
"What did she do?" Vinny asked.
"She went off to college at New York University and a couple of weeks later she told me she didn't want to be with me because she has someone else and she sees a future with him and not me…"
"Is that why you don't like to go out on double dates with me?"
"I don't like to go out on dates with you because you date too many women." Vinny laughed at Jamie's joke. "Nah I just don't want to ever be put in a situation like that, maybe if I find that right one in the future…"
"I get where you're coming from seeing her must've brought up some ugly memories and hard feeling." Jamie nodded agreeing. "But I think you should let it go, I know it's hard but you can't carry that pain for the rest of your life you have to move on…"
"I have moved on," Jamie replied in denial.
"You won't even look Janko in the eye…" Vinny argued.
"Alright," Jamie replied in a low tone. "You're right.."
"I know." Vinny joked completely ruining the mode. He put the keys back In the ignition, starting the car "I need to start hearing that more from you."
"Yeah well... you won't be hearing that again anytime soon." Jamie laughed. Vinny drove off waiting for their next call.
Eddie returned home to her apartment, she dropped her bag at the front door running her hands through her hair. She couldn't believe today, she saw Jamie, not only was he on the job like her but he worked at the same precinct as him. She poured herself a cup of wine and grabbed her laptop and just sat in deep thought, her heart broke for him, Joe and his mother died and she had no idea. She typed in Joe's full name and a bunch of articles from around two ½ years ago popped up, the same time Jamie got on the job she noticed.
"Commissioner son, Detective Joseph Reagan killed."
The title read; her stomach went in knots learning that.
"Have I been living under a rock?" Tears fell from her eyes. She wiped her tears when hearing knocks at her door, looking through the people hole she felt sick, but she opened the door with the chain still attached.
"Why are you here Noble?" She spoke through the small crack in the door.
"I can't come to visit my girl?" He protested.
"I'm not and will never be your girl." Eddie snapped back, "I haven't seen you in months… What do you want?"
"I see you've-met with our friend today." He said referring to Jamie. Her stomach dropped, does he watch her?
"You knew he was on the job." His silence showed her that she was right. "Of course you did." Eddie bit her lip.
"You think I'd let you become NYPD and not know what was going on with him?" Eddie snapped at his words.
"Let me? What is it with you and Jamie? You don't even like me, Noble! you've been playing with me for almost six years! I see you like five times a year and you always do this flirt with me and warn me not to talk to him but in that time I've gone to coffee and dinner with a couple of guys and you said nothing about them! even though I know you knew about it but somehow you get upset about Jamie."
"I'm going to pretend you didn't just say that," Noble responded, his tone showing he was angry.
"Whatever." she began to close her door but he stopped her.
"My threat still stands, I can care less if you're NYPD or even if he is. You contact him in any way that's not work-related… Unfortunate things are going to happen to him… luckily for me, two of his family members are already dead." Noble sneered.
"Screw you Noble." She slammed the door in his face, her blood boiling.
"Don't forget Edit!" He screamed at the door. She sat on her couch and just broke down, here he was again, tormenting her again for his pleasure when since Eddie turned eighteen and was forced to break up with Jamie and never speak with him again Noble has never forced Eddie into doing anything that she didn't want to he never made a move on her or anything instead he just been playing games with her, he'd let months pass before showing his face to her and he knew about the dates she would go in back in her senior year of college and even in the academy, he never said anything about it, but it's something personal with Jamie that he's obsessed with.
Vinny peeked his head into the locker room at Jamie changing. "You're coming out for drinks right?"
"When do I ever do that?" Jamie replied, putting on a fresh T-shirt.
"Jamie," Vinny said in a serious tone. "Moving on remember?" He reminded. Jamie rolled his eyes.
"Moving on has nothing to do with it. Why would I want to go out and drink?"
"Because it's fun and people want you to come out, if you don't like it then you can leave but everyone wants you there." Jamie seemed to be in thought
"Alright, I'll go." Jamie closed his locker.
"Let's go." Vinny was genuinely surprised and really happy Jamie was finally going out. When they arrived at the bar it was pretty packed for a Monday night. Vinny and Jamie squeezed their way throughout the crowd trying to find a table or seats.
"Nowhere to sit," Jamie complained. "This is why I don't do this, cramped spaces with nowhere to sit."
"Oh shush Debbie downer." Vinny continued to look around. "They have seats." Jamie's eyes landed on Eddie and Witten.
"No way." Jamie shook his head.
"Moving on." Vinny reminded.
"Why would I want to sit with someone I'm trying to move on from?" But before Vinny could argue, two hands grabbed their hands and led them to the table.
"Jeez, thanks Witten," Jamie said sarcastically. She smiled at him.
"You boys looked lost."
"We're not now." Jamie rolled his eyes at how corny Vinny is. He pulled out his chair and took a seat, flashing Eddie a small awkward smile.
"What are you two doing here?" Vinny began the conversation.
"I told Janko I'd show her to her first cop bar. Why are you two here?" Witten asked.
"Getting grandpa Reagan out the house." He said referring to Jamie.
"Since you asked me out you're buying." Jamie looked over the menu.
"Alright fine Reagan." Vinny agreed doing the same. Eddie smiled watching them bicker brought a smile to her face.
"You like it here?" Vinny asked, Jamie, looked up from his menu at Eddie after moments of no response.
"Yeah I do, it's packed for a Monday night so I can't even begin to imagine what it's like on a Friday."
"Yeah, Harvard here thinks it's pretty packed too."
"Havard?" Eddie repeated.
"Jamie went to Harvard," Vinny stated. Jamie felt awkward and just looked back at his menu.
"That's impressive Reagan," Witten replied.
"It was Harvard the law school." Jamie seemed to discredit himself.
"As if that's any less impressive," Eddie spoke
"What are you doing riding a cop's salary?" Witten was invested.
"I like what I'm doing okay? law was cool, it was a great experience but this is just something I fell in love with." Jamie informed... "Now no more about me." Other subjects were brought up and laughs were made. This felt right to Jamie, he honestly hasn't had this great of a time in a while.
"Your phone been ring Reagan." Vinny noticed something Jamie hadn't. He read the name and stood up, catching all their attention.
"I gotta take this." Jamie walked off the phone in hand. The three of them looked around worriedly hoping it was nothing too important, minutes had gone by and Jamie returned reaching for his Jacket. "I gotta go."
"Everythings fine?" Vinny asked, concerned.
"Yeah, yeah," Jamie replied. "See you at work Wednesday?" Vinny nodded. He took money from his wallet placing it onto the table "See you, ladies." Jamie waved bye walking out of the bar.
"I hope everything is good," Eddie stated in full worry.
"It was someone named Ang." Witten had to of read the name before Jamie picked up his phone. Eddie's skin crawled, he was leaving to potentially go see a woman.
"I'm still here ladies, let's get more drinks." Vinny waved over the waitress, Eddie nodded, that whole thing made her feel some type of way for some reason, she couldn't understand why she felt so bothered by the idea and not only that but he was unavailable to her anyways with the current situation but still she couldn't shake it. She just began to knock back drink after drink even becoming a little tipsy and eventually drunk.
"That's enough drinks for you." Witten moved the glass from her, besides we have a mid-day tour tomorrow we should get going." they all agreed. "I can walk you home Janko." Vinny offered it was a little after 11 pm and he couldn't let her walk home like this. Eddie nodded. "Thanks, Vin," Witten said her goodbyes. Luckily for Eddie, she lived a few blocks away.
"Is Jamie dating anyone?" Eddie asked out of nowhere the walk up until now was pretty silent.
"No, he's not," Vinny replied.
"You know." Eddie slurred. "I regret it, I regret not telling him." Vinny was very interested.
"Telling him what?" Vinny replied.
"That my ex... get this! came back all the way from upstate threatened and blackmailed me into breaking up with Jamie…" Vinny's eyes widened at Eddie, he expected something but not that. "But get this, I agreed!" She spoke in a loud tone, Vinny shushed her.
"He blackmailed you?" Eddie drunkenly nodded. "Do you still talk to your ex?" Vinny was trying to squeeze all the information from her that he could.
"Probably watching me right now." Eddie threw her hands up "I don't care thoughhh!" They arrived at her apartment
"What did your ex say if you didn't do what he said and talked to Jamie."
"He said he'd, kill him or hurt his family, I believed him! his family is Sanfin…"
"The Sanfino crime family?" Vinny's skin crawled, NYPD and the feds have been trying for decades to get them. "Can I walk you up?"
"I.. I don't caree." Eddie shrugged.
"What apartment number are you?"
"Uhh. 345 no wait 341 yeah 341.." Vinny unlocked the door letting her in.
"Janko I'm going to leave now but I need you to lock the chain lock… can you do that for me?" Vinny was in complete shock. Eddie again nodded, "Lock it right away and don't open your door again tonight" He closed the door and heard her lock all three locks including the chain lock. He smiled walking away, Vinny needed to get in touch with Jamie ASAP.
"Anglea." Jamie smiled slightly, she returned it allowing him in. Jamie looked around at all the boxes still needing to be filled.
"How have you been?" She laughed at those words.
"I've been trying…" She smiled slightly. "You know... two years later and it doesn't get any easier."
"I know what you mean." Jamie nodded. Angela made her way to the window with the perfect view of the city that was on the 8th floor of her apartment.
"I really used to love this city." She just watched the lights. "Joe loved the view."
"He did, he hated the moving everything up part but he loved the view too much not too." Angela smiled at the memory.
"I'm moving to Portland, there's a job out there waiting for me, and it's a way of a fresh start." The idea of a fresh start sounded amazing to Jamie.
"I wish I could say don't go, but I know you'll love it there." She smiled walking over to the kitchen returning with the box handing it to him. Jamie looked confused.
"Just some more of Joe's things I found packing things up, I know you'll take good care of them."
"Thank you, Ang." He accepted the box, the two talked a bit Jamie looking down at his phone seeing 'Vinny' he ignored it for now. After Jamie told her about the Job and how everyone back home is doing, he said his goodbyes and wished her luck in Oregon.
The next morning at Jamie's apartment when he had gotten up he promised himself he would get back to Vinny, but with today being his day off he needs the space, he left Joe's box in the car so after his shower and breakfast he went downstairs to his car. Jamie smiled seeing the photos of his brother, his Chevrolet handbook and the other things like sweaters, Jamie then came up upon an iPod, one Jamie had never seen before, he couldn't recall Joe owning one. he looked through it finding a number of recordings he got his earplugs out and pressed play to the very first thing
"Testing… Testing," Jamie's heart dropped hearing the voice of someone he hadn't in 2 years "This is detective Joseph Reagan, six months into my investigation of the Blue Templar, big meet tomorrow… I think I'm in…" Joe's voice completely rocked Jamie, but he couldn't get around what he was talking about… investigation and Blue Templar?
