Chapter 4: Middleverse

It was another day at the Xavier Institute, the teens heading off to school and sitting through classes. Remy noticed Rogue skipped their first class together, wondering if she was avoiding him or just didn't feel like showing up for class. It probably was the first option, he thought, remembering the look on her face as she looked at him during the fight.

It was soon lunch and the x-teens end up sitting together outside, Scott saying some kid was throwing a party, but commenting the guy is a jerk while Kitty piped up she would go. That was until Scott shot her down. "No freshman's allowed." Scott shakes his head.

"Aw, Matthews is a jerk." Kitty pouts, crossing her arms.

Kurt made a comment and started to dance on the table, his tail coming out. Scott yanks on it causing Kurt to yell at Scott in discomfort. "Kurt you have to be more careful!" Scott says in a serious tone.

"Hey! Vatch ze tail man! You pulled my tail!" Kurt bites back.

"See this is the problem, Kurt. You don't listen!"

"No! You listen, zere's a sound I vant you to hear and it's- *BAMPF*" Kurt teleports away, upset, everyone trying to make sure no other students noticed.

"Smooth Scott." Warren sighs.

Scott puts his face in his hand. "I just want Kurt to stop goofing off. We have to be careful."

"Take it easy on him, Scott." Jean places her hand on his shoulder.

Meanwhile, Kurt teleports into the schools basement, crashing into some boxes. He groans as he knocks on his watch. "Man, I really need to work on my landing."

While he crashed into his landing, Rogue was nearby reading and heard the commotion. Curious, she gets up and heads down the steps, being cautious. "Who's there?" She calls out.

Kurt gasps, backing up until an alarm goes off with his motion, a screen appearing with a teen on it. "September 10, 1979. Hi, you are trespassing in my lab, this message will self destruct in the next couple seconds. Have a nice day." The message says, then it counts down and a small explosion rings out.

Kurt coughs as Rogue rushes in, looking around. Her eyes land on Kurt who was on the floor. "What'd ya do?"

"Lab. Booby trapped." Kurt sighed.

"Lab?" Rogue echoes. "Whoa…"

She walks around, seeing not much was left, but her eyes land on a strange machine on a desk. "What's this?" She questions, mostly to herself.

"Hey! Don't touch zat!" Kurt jumps up.

"Too bad, blue boy. Finders keepers." Rogue makes a face, holding the machine close to her.

"Give it!" Kurt grabs it.

The two rustle, both trying to get the machine for themselves, but then they drop it, the machine turning on and aimed at Kurt. A flash of light appears, causing Kurt to disappear, and Rogue to look around in shock and confusion. "H-hey! Where'd ya go?" She calls out.

Panicking, Rogue jabs the machine, then uses a pipe to take it outside to the trash, not noticing Toad hopping towards her. "What's that?" He asks.

"Never you mahnd.." Rogue snaps.

"Tch, what, Rogue's afraid of getting in a little bit of trouble?" Toad snorts.

"Let's just say there's one less X-man ta deal with." Rogue dusts her hands off as she places them on her hips.

"Whoa! You get them with that!" Toad looks over at the machine in the trash. "I wanna see!"

"Don't touch it! It's… dangerous." Rogue warns.

Wanting to get back to her lunch and book, she walks away, Toad looking curiously at the machine again. While Toad plays with the machine, Kurt looks around in confusion in a dimension that looked like his school. Vhere am i?" He wonders, looking around. "Zis looks like se school…"

Kurt wanders around, jumping out of the way when objects started popping in out of thin air. "Vat ze heck iz going on?!" He yells as he dodges.

Kurt bursts through a door, pausing when he sees someone. "Hey! Can you tell me vere ve are?" He asks aloud.

The person turns, surprised that there was another. "Whoa. Where'd you come from?" The teen boy asks. "And what are you?"

He had just about the same length hair as Kurt and tan skin. Kurt came to the realization that this was the same kid on the computer screen in the lab. "Hey, you're zat kid from ze lab screen."

"Ohh, you found my lab. My names Forge. My lab was shut down when my science experiment got out of hand and well I've been stuck here ever since." Forge introduces himself.

"I'm Kurt and zat same machine brought me here." Kurt introduced himself.

"Interesting. So, what are you exactly?" Forge looks at Kurt, walking around him and looking at his tail.

"I'm a mutant." Kurt turns as Forge walked around him observing.

"No way! I thought I was the only one!" Forge smiles, turning his right hand into a robotic tool, surprising Kurt.

Meanwhile, Scott, Warren and Jean were walking through the halls, Scott venting while the other two listened. "He should be taking things more seriously."

"Maybe you should talk to Kurt, Scott." Jean suggests.

Scott sighs, but the trio pause when two boys ran out of the boys bathroom. "Demon! That bathroom is haunted!" One boy yells.

"Blue! Furry demon!" The other shouts.

"Kurt." The trio say in unison.

Scott and Warren enter the bathroom and look around, confused as they searched. "He's not here…" Warren looks to Scott.

"Kurt! This isn't funny. Come out!" Scott announces, but got nothing.

"Is Kurt in there?" Jean asks after the boys exited the bathroom.

Scott shakes his head. "We must've just missed him. I told him not to play with his image inducer too much."

While they were all looking for Kurt and he was dodging things in the other dimension, Toad was playing with the machine outside, using it on a bunch of different things. He was laughing to himself as he blasted some things away, a huge grin on his lips. "Hehe. And now that's gone. And that's gone. This is fun."

Lance and the other Brotherhood members pause as they watch Toad, wondering what he was doing. "What are you doing?" Lance asks.

"Oh this? This makes things disappear. It made an X-man disappear." Toad holds up the machine.

"No way! Ya mean it really got an X-man?" Pyro asks.

"Yeah! Just ask Rogue." Toad grins.

"Hey, where is she?" Lance looks around.

"Who knows. The girl prefers to be by herself." Toad shrugs.

"She's going to be in trouble with Mystique if she doesn't follow her orders though." Pietro crosses his arms.

Rogue was walking around the halls, trying to stay out of her roommates sight and any X-mens sight. She peers around a corner, catching Kitty, Bobby and Piotr walking together, pulling herself back and sighing. "Why y' actin' suspicious?" Asks a deep cajun voice, making her jump.

"Nothin'! Why are ya followin' meh around?" She asks, accusingly.

Remy gives her a small smirk. "'M jus' passin' by. Not followin'. Dough, y' do look guilty o' somet'in'."

Rogue gulps. "An' why would Ah be guilty of somethin'?"

Remy looks at her face. "Mm, no reason ot'er than y' hidin' somet'in'."

Rogue looks at him, her eyes on his. She knows behind those brown contacts were demonic red on black eyes staring right at her emerald ones. "Seems lahke yer hidin' somethin' too swamp rat, or should ah say, Gambit?." Rogue murmurs.

Remy moves away slightly from her, eyeing her carefully. "We all got secrets, chère." He says lowly.

Rogue looks away from him, biting her lip. "Ah hafta go…" She says softly, starting to walk, but he grabs her hand, gently, surprising her.

"Why are y' wit' de brot'erhood?" Remy asks, his voice soft as well, his eyes full of sincerity.

Rogue looks at him, then yanks her hand away. "Ah got mah friends, you got yers." She states, then she heads off, leaving Remy standing in the hall.

He sighs, his hand falling back to his side as he watched her rush past some students. His head snaps up when he hears Warren's voice behind him. "Hey, Remy, have you seen Kurt?"

"Not since lunch. Why?" Remy turns and looks at the trio confused.

"Kurt's been MIA since then. I think he might still be avoiding me but then some people have seen him in his blue, fuzzy form." Scott sighs.

"Hm. Usually he's wit' Kitty, Piotr and Bobby…" Remy rubs his chin. "Haven' seen 'im in a while dough…"

The trio look at each other, then the group of four head off towards Bobby, Kitty and Piotr. "Hey, have you guys seen Kurt?" Scott asks.

"No. Why?" Bobby answers.

"He hasn't been seen since lunch and some guys ran out of the bathroom describing his usual blue, fuzzy form." Warren pipes up.

"Man, Kurt needs to, like, be more careful." Kitty crosses her arms.

"We should all look around for him." Jean sighs. "Bobby, go tell Evan. The rest of us will look around the campus for Kurt."

Bobby heads off to where he knew Evan would be, while the rest went outside and searched for their teammate. Rogue had noticed they were searching for the fuzzy elf, instantly spotting the Brotherhood messing around with the machine she had thrown out earlier. "What are ya'll doin' with that?" She demands.

"Oh, speaking of, there she is!" Pietro smirks. "Rogue, dear, if you're going to be a part of Mystique's cause, you gotta take out more than one X-man, silly."

"Hand that over." Rogue makes a face at the boys.

"Why?" Blob asks.

"Yer dumb brains can't comprehend what this thing does. It's dangerous." Rogue grabs it from Toad, shoving him away. "It's why ah threw it out."

"Aw, c'mon Rogue. Can't we play with it for a little more!" Toad pouts.

"Yeah, c'mon sheila," Pyro grins. "Just think o' how many more X-man we can take out!"

"Yeah. Maybe we can get Summers next or Pigeon wings." Lance grins.

"Ooh, or Daniels or that Gambit guy." Pietro smirks, rubbing his hands together.

Rogue huffs. "No. They're all lookin' fer their friend. Ah hafta get rid of this before they fahnd out." Rogue shoves her way through the boys as she walks away with the machine, a conflicted look on her face.

Meanwhile, Kurt watches Forge work on some machinery, his fingers on his chin. "How long iz zis going to take man?" He asks, exasperated.

"Just about done." Forge says, not taking his eyes off his work. "This should help us get back to our own dimension."

"Finally," Kurt sighs. "I vreally hope my friends don't think I'm messing vith zem."

"Do you have a reputation for doing that?" Forge cocks an eyebrow.

Kurt winces. "Vell… yes."

"Well, this will help us send a message to them. All you have to do is tell them not to destroy the machine that got us here in the first place."

"I hope zey take me seriously." Kurt runs a hand through his hair.

"It'll be our only shot." Forge frowns a bit, putting some on final touches on his new machine.

Rogue looks around as she starts to head back to the lab where the machine was found, but stops when she hears that familiar voice. "Goin' somewhere?" Remy asks as he had the others with him.

Rogue turns, holding the machine. Scott eyes the machine, then looks at Rogue. "What are you doing with that machine, Rogue?" He asks, stepping forward.

Rogue bites her lip. "Ah know where ya friend is…."

"You know where Kurt is?" Warren looks at her in disbelief.

Rogue nods. "Where?" Jean asks.

Rogue holds up the machine. "He got sucked inta this. Ah don't know how ta get him back though…"

"Hey! What'd we miss?" Bobby asks out of breath with Evan.

"We found Kurt! Or where he is?" Kitty answers.

"He's in a machine." Piotr points to the machine.

"Let's blow it up and get him out of it!" Evan says.

"Hey! That's out machine!" Blob announces loudly, the Brotherhood circle them.

"Yeah right." Kitty snorts.

"Hand it over and this won't get messy." Lance demands.

"Ya'll can do whatevah." Rogue places the machine down, both teams eyeing it.

She walks away, not wanting to look back at the gazes that were following her every move, especially a certain cajun's gaze. The teams look at each other again, both ready to fight, until the machine comes to life. A blurry image of Kurt appears, shocking everyone. "Don't!— Restart—!" Kurt warns, then he cuts out.

"Whoa…" Warren steps back.

"I think he wants us to destroy it." Bobby says.

"Why would he say don't and then restart?"

"Maybe he's sayin' don' restart?" Remy raises a brow. "Or t' restart?"

"This is Kurt we're talking about. Always the jokester." Evan says. "How do we know he isn't playing a prank?"

Scott aims his glasses at the machine, then sighs. "No. Remy's right. I think he needs us to restart it…"

On the other side Kurt and Forge high five, excitedly watching as Scott presses the restart button. The machine comes to life, everyone standing back as a portal opens up. The Brotherhood start running towards the X-men, the group of teens ready to defend. "X-men, protect that machine." Scott commands.

The two teams start to fight, the X-men protecting the machine with their life as they guard it. Kurt and Forge start making their way to the portal entrance, noticing that they only had a limited amount of time before it closed. "You're going to have to port us out of here." Forge says as they ran.

"Okay. When do I need to do zat?" Kurt asks.

"In about three feet. I'll tell you when."

They run as fast as they can, Forge holding onto the Kurt's shoulder as they ran, then Forge yells at the three feet mark and Kurt teleports, both crashing into the lab and into the fighting group as the portal collapses shut and the machine goes up in smoke. "Kurt!" Kitty smiles and hugs him.

"Aw man, the machine's broke." Toad pouts.

"Let's go guys. This fight is over." Pietro rolls his eyes as the Brotherhood retreats.

"Man am I glad to be out of there!" Forge stretches.

"Ja, tell me about it." Kurt sighs happily.

"Next time, don't fool around with any old lab equipment." Scott sighs.

"Don't vorry, I von't!" Kurt shakes his head.

The group head out of the lab, Rogue watching from afar and out of sight. A sigh of relief escapes her as she saw Kurt was okay. The group pause at the parking lot, talking amongst each other as Rogue starts to walk away. "So, Forge, do you need a ride home?" Scott asked.

"Nah, it's fine. My parents live just down the road. I've been late for curfew for 20 years. They'll be in for a surprise." Forge shakes his head, then starts to walk away while waving go the group.

"Well, now that that's done with, let's head home." Warren sighs.

Everyone agrees and heads for the cars, school already over for the day, heading home for the day. Mystique watched from her window in her office, a glare on her face as she watched both the X-men and Rogue walk away. "You mustn't be hard on her, Raven. Given the right moment, the girl will help us." A deep voice with a helmet says, making her jump in surprise.

"Yes, of course. I'll have to remind her who the real enemy is…" Mystique says as she backs up a bit.
