Chapter 26: The Owl and the Seahorse
Atop a Sea Stack, just off the Coast of Themyscira…
Little did either Apollo or Persephone know that they were not the only Olympians out and about this evening, discussing matters of great importance concerning both the Amazons and the rest of the Greek Pantheon.
Whilst the God of the Sun traversed his way around the mortals of Rhodes and the Goddess of the Underworld spoke with the Amazons of Themyscira, a certain other Olympian Goddess was waiting for a certain other Olympian God to arrive for their arranged meeting atop a certain sea stack just within sight of the island's shores.
Athena stood stoically upon the spire of oceanic earth jutting out from the sea like one of the many stone statues her half-brother Perseus made in his heroic lifetime. She stood there silently, almost as if she was one with the eroded rock beneath her sandaled feet, looking in the direction of Themyscira, the Amazon's island being only substantial source of light available to her aside from the silver glow of the moon high in the night sky above her
Unflinching and unmoving, Athena remained atop the spire even as the cold night wind battered her helmeted hair and splashing sea spray misted across her stern face from the crashing waves down below her as she waited for her ally to arrive.
She had been waiting for a while and although patience was a virtue the War Goddess was proud to say she had mastered long ago, even her tactical tolerance was beginning to wear thin, mainly because she was certain her… ally was making her wait out here in the dark and cold on purpose.
She knew she really be surprised at this point; it wasn't the first time he had done this, after all.
Admittedly, Athena had never been on particularly good terms with the particular member of her pantheon that she was currently waiting for, not since that now famous contest she had with him over the naming of her former city state of Athens, a friendly competition that had quickly turned into a rather uglier affair…
…which became an even uglier affair as it was shortly followed by said relative having a rather literal affair with her city's high priestess inside the temple the Athenians had built to honour her Olympian self in all of her war glory.
Needless to say, the… aftermath of that particularly infamous incident had not been pretty, especially for her former high priestess, and even though that part of their history had now long since faded into mortal legend, her relative was still something of a sore loser who knew how to hold a grudge, and knew exactly how to piss her usually composed self-off in all of the worst ways possible.
The Goddess of War and Wisdom let out quiet but still clearly annoyed sigh as she looked down in boredom and finally noticed that there was something… shiny… embedded atop the stone surface of the sea stack, just in front of her sandaled feet.
No doubt, the Wise War Goddess had been practically standing on it the whole time she had been waiting out there, otherwise she would have surely noticed the silver colouring amongst the dark stone beneath her and as she moved back to get a better look, Athena could've sworn the object began to glow in the moonlight.
Sufficiently curious now, Athena summoned her trademark spear to her hand and began to carefully chip away at the stone surrounding whatever shiny, silver treasure it was she found lodged into the surface of the sea stack she stood upon.
Athena had to admit that it was strange, how could whatever this object was end all the way up here? Embedded at the top of sea stack and not become rusted over years of sea wind and salt sprays? It was a peculiar puzzle, she had to admit.
But even as she continued to stab at the stone, surrounding the silver object, which was slowly revealed to circular or even octagonal in shape, the Goddess of Wisdom knew that this was irrelevant venture and that whatever it was she was currently excavating was likely nothing of great importance.
It was probably just a random piece of silver encrusted armour lost in a battle by a solider long ago or a shiny trinket thrown to the sea by a sailor as an offering to her aunt Amphitrite long forgotten, but then why hadn't blacked with time or lost its shine over the centuries, it couldn't have possibly ended up here after the sea stack had formed, unless of course, it had fallen from the sky.
Even Athena had to admit such a notion was ridiculous to consider, things of value did not just fall from the sky, despite what the mortals believed about the power of falling stars.
Ultimately, while Athena would never admit it to anyone… ever, her curiosity did sometimes get the better of her, like it was currently doing right now. Besides, it beat the boredom of waiting for her late ally and in just a few moments, hers would finally be satisfied as she chipped away at the last of the stone sealing the flat shiny silver object in the sea stacks wind swept surface.
Stopping to examine her excavation work, Athena now noticed that the silver object was not only circular, it was also surprisingly flat, like a coin or even a disc.
But just as she stuck the pointy end of her spear down beneath the circular disc, Athena felt the sea stack she was standing on shake after being hit by a particularly powerful wave. Powerful enough to accidentally cause the War Goddess to put too much pressure on her spear thrust-
-and dislodge the circular object completely from its stone tomb, sending the silver disc flying into the air before it landed on its side and with the partial aid of the sea still shaking stack it had just been freed from, bounced its way almost mockingly, right off the edge and down into the still swirling ocean below.
Athena grunted in both surprise and annoyance before quickly regaining her solider-like composure and immediately forgot all about whatever that silver disc was or why she was even interested in it in the first place, before turning around to face the vast expanse of ocean behind her as the sea stack she stood upon finally stopped shaking beneath her feet.
In the far distance, Athena could see the sea start to bubble and boil, forming upon its liquid surface into a misshapen mountain of foam, before the frothing churn suddenly raced towards the sea stack she stood upon and an instant later, shot upwards it in a vast water sprout so that the muscular figure poised amidst the towering column of water could step out of it and onto the wind-swept platform to join her.
Athena quickly summoned her Medusa Shield to protect her face from the resulting splash of water sea water that came as the column fell back into the ocean below before lowering it again to look her fellow Greek God in the eye, sky blue meeting sea green under the moonlight as her accomplice finally showed himself, dripping sea water as he walked.
The infamous Seahorse had finally arrived.
Must you always be so dramatic, Poseidon? Athena thought to herself as she stared at her uncle and ally.
Like her father Zeus and her other uncle Hades, Poseidon had a large and muscular physique, fitting both that of a Greek statue and an immortal monarch, though his skin was of a far tanner complexion than any of his other divine siblings, though he stood just as tall as his older and younger brother.
Like his brothers, Poseidon also possessed a beard which was a faded aqua in colour, though his was far longer and much less well managed than his fellow Olympian Kings, worn, wiry and sporting a noticeable twist at the end. Something which Athena knew was a natural consequence of her uncle spending most of his time under the sea, but still, Poseidon's hair was also longest of brothers, almost as long as his beard in fact and the same aqua colour, just like his big bushy eyebrows.
As for his attire, her uncle Poseidon wore a turquoise sash tied with a silver shoulder guard in the shape of a horse's head, an aqua skirt, and no shoes on his feet, unlike the rest of his Olympian brethren, a trait he did share with his Nereid queen and heir though, for obvious reasons on her aunt and cousin's part
… and all across Poseidon's ripped physique and muscular arms, were epic depictions of various sea creatures and monsters, Athena knew that they were not just mere body art, but rather magical markings, tattooed into his divine flesh to give her uncle even greater authority over all of the denizens of the deep, and a technique for increasing ones own divine power that she knew Poseidon had learned from the Telchines during his younger years before the Titanomachy and one that he had not felt the need to share with the rest of his Olympian following the Carnage at Crete.
Atop her uncle's proud head, was his crown, a white circlet of five sharp spikes, fashioned from the fallen teeth of the great sea monster Charybdis and his right hand was his iconic Trident of the Aegean, forged by the Cyclopes Brothers and carved with magical Telchine runes, which served the exact same function as her uncle's various tattoos, to increases one's mastery over the ocean and all of its creatures.
Like her fathers Thunderbolt Blade and her uncle Hades Underworld Helmet, it was essential tool in their family's victory in the Titanomachy, the Gigantomachy and all of the following Telchine Rebellions. Despite her well-known preferences for spears and swords, Athena had to begrudgingly admit, it was an impressive weapon, too bad it wasn't in the hands of someone more worthy to wield it.
"You are late, uncle." Was all Athena said in terms of a warm family greeting.
"Please forgive my tardiness, my oh so patient niece." Poseidon answered just as warmly but with a clear sardonic tinge to his words as he wrung his long blue beard of saltwater, pulling out a stray strand of seaweed in the process, Athena had troubling hiding her revulsion as her uncle dropped it near her feet. "I was busy dealing with a group of whalers invading the borders of my beloved Aegean earlier this evening."
Her uncle slammed the bottom of his trident down on the stone, causing the pillar they stood upon to shake ever so briefly and as her eyes once again focused on the legendary super weapon, Athena realised that what she thought was actually some random piece of kelp hanging from the prongs of his trident was actually human entrails, still dripping with blood.
Athena studied the carnage covered weapon a moment longer before looking her oceanic uncle one again in the eye. "I take it your wife's beloved cetaceans no longer have anything to fear from those savage sailors?"
Poseidon just chuckled darkly at her question as he shook off the coil of intestine from his trident, the mortal organ sliding off the sea stack down into the ocean below. "Let's just say my pet sharks are eating well tonight, Athena."
The War Goddess opened her mouth to respond when a far-off boom of thunder interrupted her, both she and her uncle turned in the direction of the noise and saw a large mass of dark storm clouds gathered around the section of night sky they both knew Mount Olympus currently occupied as it floated over the Grecian world, unseeable to mortal eyes, but obvious to Olympians like them.
What was obvious to both Athena and Poseidon however, was the reason for the sudden mass of black clouds that had suddenly formed over the Greek Gods mountainous kingdom and that was one simple fact.
Zeus was angry, very angry…
"I see my little brother is having one of his usual fits again." Poseidon commented as the stormy sky above was lit up by brief flashes of lighting that was soon followed by another far away thunderclap. "And people say I'm the temperamental one in the family."
Athena had to bite her lower lip in frustrated anger to refrain from saying that her uncle was the temperamental one in the family, as her uncle pulled out a large bottle of wine, still dripping wet with saltwater and covered in barnacles, clearly a recovered relic from a long sunken merchant ship belonging to the worshippers of her younger half-brother Dionysus, firmly fermented over the many years it spent at the bottom of the ocean.
Athena bit her lip harder as she watched her uncle use one of the prongs from his trident as a makeshift bottle opener before stabbing the pointy end into the ground to hold the weapon in place as he drank, much to Athena's further frustration, treating a weapon of such power in such a cavalier fashion was simply unacceptable to her.
Still, the War Goddess wisely bit her tongue and swallowed her frustrations, no need to aggravate her oceanic ally before their meeting had even started after all. "Yes, truly uncle, such frivolous displays of elemental anger are unbecoming of a Greek God, much less a ruling Olympian, but that is beside the point at the moment, Poseidon, I assume you have news to share with your favourite niece?"
One of the main reasons Athen had first proposed this unlikely alliance between herself and her uncle Poseidon, was because the God of the Seas had proven himself to be a surprisingly reliable source of useful information over the years, specifically on the current where abouts and ongoings of the rest of their pantheon.
From Seagulls to Seals, From Dolphins to Horses, her uncle's telepathic powers over the various creatures of his divine domain were unrivalled by gods and mortals alike, which naturally gave him many eyes and ears and gave all across the Aegean ocean and even beyond, which naturally made him a very valuable ally to Athena and her own Olympian ambitions.
"Always straight to the point as usual, my knowledge hungry niece." Poseidon said with a smug smile before taking a long drink of his century old wine straight from the bottle, forcing his impatient niece to just a little bit longer as he took several long gulps of his aged alcohol.
Athena barely resisted the urge to tap her foot impatiently as she waited with her arms crossed for her uncle to finish his drink, which after a few more long moments, he finally did with a satisfied sigh.
"Not too much to report this time, I'm afraid Athena." Poseidon said as he mulled over his vintage wine aged aftertaste. "Ares is still playing his war games in the Middle East as you already know, Dionysus has busy been running his Casino in Vegas with his lovely wife Ariadne, Demeter has been visiting Persephone and Hades in the Underworld while Hestia attends to her duties on Olympus, Artemis has off gone to hunt poachers in Africa alongside her Nymph friends, including that big one who can turn into a Bear, Hephaestus is at his forge in Mount Etna as always, my son Triton has been winning surfing competitions in Hawaii and Aphrodite is currently in Paris doing what she loves to do most…"
Athena cut him off there with a raised hand, she really didn't need anymore details on what Aphrodite was up at the moment, the mental image was more than enough for her. "Anything else, my most informative uncle?"
"You might find this interesting, Apollo and that talking turkey of his where last seen flying off in the direction of Rhodes." Poseidon said before taking another drink of his wine bottle.
"Rhodes?" Athena repeated, sounding interested now, the War Goddess had known that her sunny half-brother and his fiery familiar had been on Themyscira mere hours ago, but she had not known where they had flown off to since then. "For what purpose?"
"My creatures weren't close enough to hear, but I assume it was to once again pay their respects to the memory of Apollo's poor departed mentor Helios." Poseidon with a shrug of his broad shoulders, before taking swig of wine.
"I wonder…?" Athen mused to herself, stroking her face in thought, every once and while, Apollo and his pet Phoenix would discreetly go visit the island their teacher had claimed from the Telchines long ago, the same island where the former Sun God had met his untimely end at the blades of the princess whose he had exiled, the same island Apollo had nearly burned down in his grief and fury over his mentor's death.
While she knew that her uncles reasoning was both very logical and most likely true, Athena still had her suspicions, as she always did…
"But enough with the usual family gossip, my dear niece." Poseidon declared loudly, unknowingly interrupting her thought process as her uncle was often prone to do, before pulling his trident out of the stone with ease and pointing it past Athena and directly at the Amazon's island. "I do believe it is past time we talk about the real reason we are both here tonight, Athena, to discuss this latest Demigod development amongst my sister Hera's Amazons."
"Then you already know, uncle." Athena asked, sounding only mildly surprised, in all honesty, it would have surprised the War Goddess more if Poseidon didn't know what the true purpose of this meeting was really about, Athena knew that her uncle was always keeping an eye on the women of this island for his own… personal reasons.
"I was here a few hours earlier Athena." Poseidon explained, putting his trident back down. "I saw the great fireball that put an end to the Sisters of the Storm with my own eyes, it was like watching one of those great flaming rocks that come crashing down to earth, and I saw that Demigod boy emerge from the aftermath alive and unscathed, it was… unexpected to say the least."
At this, even Athena couldn't help but nod in agreement. "I saw it too uncle, which means that you understand that there is more to this latest scheme of Hera's than either of us first thought, and that there is clearly a lot more to this boy than first meets the eye."
"Obviously Athena." Poseidon said, swirling his wine bottle in contemplation, shaking off a loose barnacle in the process. "But the one thing I don't understand is why this particular boy, a Demigod no less, would be allowed to live and grow amongst the Amazons of Themyscira, I do not believe my sister has altered her islands divine laws or that her women worshippers have all suddenly had a change of heart about the opposite sex, especially after what Hercules and his horde did to them all those centuries ago." Finished with his musing, the Sea God decided to take another big sip of his vintage beverage…
… and Athena decided that now was most tactical moment to let her uncle in on the big secret regarding the Amazons newest champion. "Because uncle, this boy is… the Son of Hippolyta."
As petty as she knew it was, Athena could not deny she did take a certain amount of pleasure in watching the way her underwater uncle gaped like a gasping fish at her shocking revelation, spitting out his mouthful of wine in the process. "What?!"
"It's a long story Poseidon, many chapters of which have not been written yet, but the boy is apparently Hippolyta's child, created by Hera from a fallen star that landed on the shores of Themyscira many years and the Amazon Queen's own blood." The War Goddess explained in her usual blunt, matter-o-fact way of speaking.
At this explanation, her oceanic uncle a raised a still wet eyebrow at her, his expression one of pure disbelief. "And you seriously believe that Athena?"
"Of course not." Athena said derisively, her face scowling in contempt. "The story is most likely nothing more than fantastical fabrication, made up by both Hera and Hippolyta to hide the boy's true origins from the majority of Hippolyta's sisters and the rest of our pantheon, though for what reason they would create such a tall-tale in the first place, I do not know, after all, everyone knows how Demigods are created and it most certainly isn't from falling stars."
That was the part of this whole Son of Hippolyta puzzle that the Wise Goddess couldn't figure out, much to her continued frustration. Any mortal fool with half a brain could gather that the boy's mere existence on Themyscira clearly meant that the Queen of the Amazons had some sordid affair with one of her fellow Greek Gods, most likely one of her Olympian relatives.
Such a thing was obvious to anyone who had ever read Greek myths about Demigods, many of which Athena herself had personally featured in and she had made the exact same assumption when Hippolyta's daughter had been born, a girl who was the pinnacle of everything an Amazonian princess should be. Brave, strong, fast, and intelligent that she earned Athena own incredibly high stamp of approval, but the girl also possessed a certain beauty, grace, and aura around her that Athena knew was only found in Greek Goddesses like herself.
But if that was true and Athena still suspected it was, then why bother with the falling star cover story, surely both Hera or Hippolyta knew they weren't fooling anyone with that fairytale, unless there was something more to this scheme that they didn't want anyone else to know about, the boy included, but what could it be.
"The Queen of the Amazons has a new son, huh." The Poseidon pondered aloud, breaking Athena once more out of her train of thought, her uncle sounding less shocked and more amused by this new turn of events now as he stroked his thick blue beard in thought, rinsing more saltwater out of it in the process. "Well, well, well, that is surprising, the Fates do love to pull their jokes on all of us, don't they?"
"Yes, they do." Athena agreed, before casting a suspicious eye towards her oceanic ally. "Unless, of course dear uncle, there is something you aren't telling me?"
At this thinly veiled accusation, Poseidon just smiled lecherously at her, which was something her uncle knew she hated. "You know me Athena, as much as I would love to take credit for fathering a child upon the Queen of the Amazon's beautiful body, my dear niece, I'm afraid I have not yet had the pleasure and neither has my son Triton, for he definitely would have told me by now if this new Demigod's was his." The Sea God said before finishing off the last of his beverage.
As shocking as it might seem, Athena did find herself believing the Sea God's words this time, her uncle Poseidon was many things, but modest was not one of them, as was his son Triton, had either he or his heir actually managed to seduce the Queen of the Amazons and knowingly sired a son with her, she highly doubted either of them would be able to resist bragging about it to everyone on Mount Olympus, especially Zeus and Hera.
"Of course, uncle, but regardless, it would seem we are not the first Olympians to take notice of Themyscira's newest champion." Athena said. "Aside from Apollo and his pet Pheonix, both Hermes and Persephone have also taken a noticeable interest in the boy as well."
It was the mention of the Daughter of Demeter that piped Poseidon's interest and Athena had a feeling that it would.
"Hmm… Persephone…" Her uncles smile became even more lecherous as he spoke the Queen of the Underworld's name aloud, his tone of voice definitely implying what was going through his head at the moment, it honestly made it hard for not to Athena grimace. "So, what has caused my dear sister's lovely little Kore to take an interest in this young Demigod?"
"Unknown at this time, but based on what I've been able to gather, I do believe she has some strange sort of affection for the boy, I have never seen her take such an interest in a in Demigod so young before, not even Adonis." Athena said, trying to ignore the amorous look on Poseidon's face.
"Perhaps she's just keeping an eye on a potential paramour, like Theseus once did with Helen of Troy." Poseidon suggested with a shrug of his broad shoulders. "After all, it's never too early to keep tabs on a future conquest."
Once again, Athena struggled not to grimace.
"Possibly, but I think it is more likely that Persephone is still pining for her own chance at motherhood, and perhaps sees this boy as the closet thing she will ever get besides her pet Hellhounds." Athena said in opposition argument, it made the most logical sense to her, despite their marriage being amongst the most functional of all the ruling Olympians, and that was still not saying much, the War Goddess knew that one major issue in her cousin's marriage to the Lord of the Underworld was the fact she had yet to give him an heir, or at least… one that lived for very long anyway…
Athena looked back at Poseidon and she didn't think it was possible, but somehow her uncle's expression had become even more lecherous than before, this time Athena couldn't hold back her grimace. "Well Athena, if my beautiful niece wants to have a child of her own so badly, she really should just come to me, I would have been more than happy to help her out with that."
I'm sure you would uncle, and then you would use that child to lay claim to your brother's kingdom? Making yourself God of BOTH the Sea and the Underworld, before then directly challenging my father for his throne. Athena privately pondered to herself; the wise War Goddess had no doubt her uncle would do such a thing if given the chance.
Even before her rather… unconventional birth, it was well known among those who lived atop Mount Olympus and even those below it in the Underworld, that Poseidon was always the least satisfied with his allotted kingdom out of the Three Brother Kings. He loved his watery realm and to his credit, her uncle did take protecting and looking after his divine domain very seriously, it was in fact, one of the only things Poseidon took seriously.
But she had no doubt that ruling over just the Aegean Sea would never be enough to satisfy someone as ambitious as Poseidon, especially after almost the majority of his Atlantean worshippers abandoned him… just like how been the Goddess of War and Wisdom forever would never be enough for her, especially after she lost Athens and almost all of her worshippers when Greece fell.
Athena shook to ride herself of the memories of her once magnificent city state crumbling into ruin around her during the Fall. "Regardless of whatever her reasons are, I highly doubt Persephone has any ill intent for the boy…" Then a thought struck like a wave on the rocks below. "Unless of course, she suspects that Hades has been… unfaithful to her."
"You suspect Hades of being the boy's father?" Poseidon asked incredulously, before letting out a loud, uproarious laugh that almost sounded like the crashing of waves on the shore. "Please, that is very unlikely Athena, everyone knows my grim and grey older brother was never blessed with the same sort of virility as Zeus and I were." Her uncle puffed out his chest in pride and Athena couldn't help but roll her eyes at him.
"Besides Athena, Hades rarely ever ventures to the surface and whenever he does, I assure you, in all these years since the Fall, he has never gone anywhere near Themyscira, not even once, he lets Persephone handle all the interactions with Amazons." Poseidon said as he finally emptied the last of his bottle of wine before putting it away.
As seasick as it made her feel, Athena found herself once again agreeing with her uncle's logic, as crude and simplistic as it was at times.
The God the Dead had become ever more reclusive over the centuries after the Fall of Ancient Greece, and that was saying something. Athena could not readily recall the last time she had seen Hades outside the Underworld, except for when Zeus had summoned him to Mount Olympus right after Hercules death at the blade of her half-brother Perseus, demanding his elder brother release his favourite son's shade from the Underworld immediately.
Athena had just noticed Apollo walking in near the end of their father's long commandment, a burning look of sorrow and hate in his eyes, when Hades had flatly refused, right to Zeus face, right in front of the entire Olympian court.
Athena had never seen her father so dumbfounded before as they all watched Hades promptly turn and walk out of the hall, making brief eye contact with his Sun God nephew as he did so.
Since then, Hades had remained down in his underground realm, outright ignoring every demand from Zeus to return to Mount Olympus to answer for his long absence, only leaving his residence when he needed to and never for very long whenever he did so, based on what she had been able to gather from her Automaton Owl's various recognisance missions
His usually submissive older brother surprise defiance of him had only fuelled her father's already obvious paranoia of everyone around him, to the point where he now believed that even his usually passive and compliant sibling was now actively plotting against him.
Whether that was actually true or not, Athena did not know, one thing that was for certain though, neither her uncle Hades or his wife Persephone had been idle in that time since their unexpected exodus from Mount Olympus.
As the Underworld became even more chaotic around them, as the Pits of Tartarus widened and the Flaming River of Phlegethon overflowed its banks, Hades had built up his walls around all of Elysium and what parts of Asphodel he could as well. Turning his once open palace grounds into a formidable looking fortress, with defences comparable to those of the once great walls of Troy.
Not only that, but over the past century or so, Athena also knew that the Lord of the Underworld had been enlisting every shade found wandering the River Styx into his service, turning the fallen and forgotten phantoms of Greece's ancient past into his own spiritual army, completely loyal to him and his lady.
Why Hades was doing all of this was obvious to anyone in the Olympian pantheon, but especially a Goddess of Warfare and Tactics like herself, Zeus's inaction had allowed most of the Underworld to fall into chaos, and if there was one thing the God of the Dead took personally, it was people messing with his realm, especially when said people were his own kin.
But Athena also knew that there was more to this than just another brotherly beef between her father and his older sibling, her uncle Hades was the God of War before she and Ares split the various elements of that title between them, Hades was wise enough to know when war was about to breakout, and her uncle was preparing for when the first blow would be struck.
But by whom and for what reason, that was the thing that made the God of the Dead wait quietly in his palace, day after day, year after year, for the moment to choose his side in this conflict.
"You also say Hermes has returned from his travels and has also taken an interest in the Son of Hippolyta." Poseidon asked, for the third time that night, breaking his ever-thoughtful niece out of her own mental musings. "I imagine he must have made quite pest of himself in front of Hera and her worshippers, especially her young champion."
"Indeed, you should have seen the way he tore the boy's confidence down only to build him back up again, their little speedster duel was quite the performance, he went from mocking the boy intelligence to complementing his cunning in less than an hour." Athena said, explaining what she had seen via her earlier statue surveillance.
Athena knew Hermes always enjoyed testing other people's intelligence, particularly those he found to either be of interest or amusement to him, a Prince of the Amazons would definitely fall under his definition of both, given her younger brother's well-known tendency to piss people off wherever he went, she wasn't surprised to see him goad the boy into trying to publicly best him before Hera and her worshippers.
What she was surprised by was the outcome of their little game of Cat and Mouse.
Honestly, it was not the method she preferred to teach a potential prodigy in the refined art of combat, but Athena could still not deny that Hermes 'think on your feet strategy' and 'tactical trickster fighting style was effective, if also a bit annoying to endure to times… but as much as an insufferable ass as her younger brother could be at times, he was never one to hand out praise freely or insincerely.
"Really?" Poseidon asked with a curious expression and a raised watery brow. "So, do you think Hermes is the boy's…
"Of course not." Athena said, rolling her eyes once again. "We all know where Hermes… preferences lie, but I don't think his interest is merely for his own amusement either, he's up to something uncle."
At this, Poseidon just gave an almost horse-like snort of contemptable amusement. "Big surprise there my know-it-all niece, Hermes is always up to something, everyone knows that."
Athena knew that to be true and that was honestly the most frustrating about her younger half-brother, he was so hard to fully figure out. Unlike herself, Hermes acted both strategically and impulsively at times, one moment, he would follow a completely logical train of thought that she could easily understand only to then to abandoned it and do something completely unexpected for no apparent reason whatsoever, other than to screw with people.
That same unexpected thought process also applied to his personality, Hermes could be the nicest and kindest person one moment, performing altruistic acts and giving generously to those around him, then switch to being a complete bastard the second afterwards with no regret at all,
Out of all their kin, Hermes was always the hardest to keep track of, thanks to both his super speed and his invisibility, it was next to impossible to keep long lasting surveillance on him, much to her eternal frustration, and the Messenger of the Gods was far too clever to allow anyone to follow his movements for very long anyway.
One more than one occasion, Athena had subtly attempted to place a tracking device on Hermes, only to find it later attached to one of her weapons or books, usually with a mocking note attached to it, much to her further frustration.
Still, as much as Athena was annoyed by Hermes jocular and sarcastic attitude towards most things in life, she did respect his intelligence and his cunning, she almost considered it equal to her own in many ways, the key word in this case being almost.
Unlike many members of their pantheon, she also knew better than to underestimate him either, while it was not obvious to many who met him, underneath all of his smug smiles and annoying antics, Hermes was far more dangerous and ruthless than his laid-back behaviour would suggest.
After all, it was his plan that had ultimately led to Hercules first defeat and death…
However, that was beside the point, she was still the Goddess of Wisdom after all and she was still Hermes superior in that regard, just as she was Ares superior in all things involving battle and bloodshed, just as she was Poseidon superior in all matters of political intrigue.
"Hermes games aside Athena, tell me, does my sister Hera seriously believe that this Amazonian prince actually stands a chance against Zeus favourite child?" Poseidon asked skeptically, for the fourth time that night having to break Athena once again out of her own deep thoughts, as he was often prone to do during these meetings of theirs.
Athena couldn't help but take note of Poseidon's particular choice of words then, as he referred to her barbaric half-brother Hercules as her father's favourite child, not his favourite son, and it took all of her willpower not to throw her spear straight at her uncle's crotch for that slight.
For there was a time when if someone asked the War Goddess who her father's favourite child was, she would have answered immediately with herself, but that time had long since passed and Athena had lost her father's favour when she, Poseidon, Hera, and Apollo had first attempted to overthrow him to teach their leader a lesson in abusing his royal power, an attempt that was foiled by the final Hecatonchires Briareus.
As far as Zeus was now concerned, his once favourite daughter and genius child was just as much of a traitor and a disappointment like the rest of her half-siblings, save for Hercules and even his continued status as Zeus's Golden Boy was dependant on his future success in conquering the mortal world in their father's name.
The revolting feeling of having to compare herself to her brutish and barbaric brother made Athena feel ill, and she shot Poseidon a very dirty look for it. While her Ocean God uncle wasn't the sharpest sword in the armoury, he did possess a certain low cunning, enough to surprise even her on occasion with his crude tactics.
"I do not think Hera would quite blatantly break her own divine laws about boys being allowed to be born and raised on her island unless she thought that this one could be of great use to her?" Athena said, giving her uncle a stern look. "Which means, Poseidon-".
"-That you think this Demigodling could be of great use to us as well." The Sea God, finally finishing his niece sentence for her.
"I think we would be foolish not to use every asset available to us, uncle." Athena said, her gaze firmly upon the island in front of them. "Besides, the boy has already proven himself to be useful, he removed the Sisters of the Storm and their avian army from Zeus's forces and has so far kept the Skyfather's attention centred solely upon himself, meaning-."
"Meaning that as long as Zeus is busy Wolf hunting, he won't notice the Owl swoop down from above or the Seahorse rising from the depths when the time comes for my little brother to… step down as it were." Poseidon finished for her, a pleased smile spreading across his still wet face. "I like it, so, what's are next move Athena?"
"For now, and for you uncle, nothing." Athena told Poseidon, before looking back in the direction of Themyscira, where right now, the island's new champion slept, unaware of their plans. "I will be going to Themyscira in person soon enough, when I do, I will test the Amazons new champion's myself, not unlike how Hermes did and find out just how useful he can be to us in the future, you will not approach him before then Poseidon."
"Excuse you, niece." Poseidon said, his voice suddenly turning as stormy as the sky above, Athena turned back round and saw that his face had become as furious as the crashing waves below and for a moment the War Goddess felt the sea stack threaten to break apart beneath her feet. "But I don't take orders from anyone, especially not my little brothers formerly favourite daughter."
At her uncle's repeated slight against her, Athena felt herself start to lose control of her own temper, something else that Poseidon was also very good at doing.
"You'll do as I say because it's my plan uncle, and because unlike you, I am one of the Olympians the Amazons actually worship." Athena said, firing back her own not-so subtle jab at her oceanic ally.
"If memory serves Athena, you where the one who came to me, looking for my help with your grand plan for the future of our pantheon." Poseidon said, glaring at her with crossed arms and narrowed eyes. "Perhaps we should just go back to the way things were between us."
Realising her ever moody uncle was close to losing his temper and she was close to losing her much needed alliance with him, Athena ceased her glaring, closed her eyes, and took a deep breath to calm herself, before forcing a more… pleasant smile onto her face.
After all, the Goddess of Wisdom prided herself on her political abilities and that included sometimes making peace with one's rivals instead of making war.
"Poseidon please, I only meant that we should both think about this logically." Athena said coming closer and as much as it sickened her, put a hand on her uncle's shoulder, the War Goddess noticing how the unexpected action caused her uncle to become even more tense than before, but still, he did not shake her hand off. "Individually, each of us are in our own right, formidable, dangerous, a force to reckoned, but together, just imagine the possibilities."
Athena noticed how her subtle complements had the desired effect on her uncle, as Poseidon's face gradually lost its furious expression and he slowly uncrossed his arms, so she pressed on wit her words "So why waste time fighting and arguing against one another when we both know the truth."
"And that would be?" Poseidon asked, his gaze firmly locked on hers, his tone half suspicious and half curious now.
Athena leaned in close, doing her best to ignore the salty sea smell that always followed her uncle around, even when he was out of the water. "We need each other uncle, like it or not."
With that said, Athena turned around pulled out a silver Athenian coin from her pocket and threw it onto the ground, the coin stopped inches from touching the stone before it began to glow bright blue and expanded into a much larger disc the size of her Gorgon Shield, if not a little bigger.
Athena graceful stepped onto her Hoverboard, a mode transport of her own personal design and slammed the bottom of her spear into the slot which allowed her to steer it, before turning to regard her Ocean God uncle one last time as their meeting came to an end. "So please Poseidon, allow your favourite niece to take the lead on this one."
Poseidon watched Athena fly away into the night sky with a cooling expression on his face, before pulling his trident out of the ground and slamming it down again with a huff, causing the stone to crack and begin to break apart.
The Sea God then turned and jumped back into his ocean's dark depths just as the sea stack he had been standing on came crashing down after him with a mighty splash, sending great waves crashing upon Themyscira's shore in the wake of its destruction.
What neither the Goddess of Wisdom or the God of the Sea realised though, was that the sudden, intense waves caused by the sea stacks collapse caused the silver object that had just slipped through Athena's fingers to get kicked up from the bottom of the ocean floor and get carried to the island's shore.
Poseidon actually caught a glimpse of it as he swam away, but like his niece Athena, did not think much of the strange silver object that flew right past his face as he headed back out to sea.
Oh, if only they knew the value of what was literally right in front of their faces.
Forgotten by those who had unleashed it from its stone prison, the silver disc proceeded to be pushed and batted by the waves until finally it arrived on the island's shore, tucked safely away from prying eyes in a secluded cove as the swirling waves that brought it here, finally retreated and ceased to be.
There the silver key lay, in the surf and sand, for its creator's child to come and finally retrieve it…
Greetings to all my fellow fanfic readers and writers, I hope you all enjoyed Superman, Son of Hippolyta Chapter 26: The Owl and the Seahorse, which I believe is the first chapter in this story to not feature either Kal, Hippolyta, Apollo or Alkyone at all. Still, I hope it was sufficiently entertaining with the full introduction of two previously only teased Olympians, Athena the Goddess of War and Poseidon the God of Sea, who have struck up an unexpected Alliance in the wake of Hera's latest scheme and Zeus mad ambitions.
This chapter was also a chance for me to elaborate on the current where abouts of most of the other Olympians at this point in the story, rest assured, both Kal and all of you will get to meet every God and Goddess Poseidon mentioned in his report to Athena.
As stated previously and like many of the other Olympians in this story, Athena's design is based on her appearance in the Netflix Series Blood of Zeus, a show I always recommend if for nothing else, for its T-Rexcellent Greek God designs. As for Poseidon, his design is actually a mix of his appearance in both Blood of Zeus and God of War 3.
As always, I recommend my friend and Greek mythology expert Luke5921 Superman story, Kal Son of Odin which is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with some DC elements added into it, so if you are a fan of both Superman and Marvel, which I AM and I know many of you are, go check it out, it keeps getting better and better all the time.
Also, If any of you would like to support my work in other ventures, I have YouTube channel under the same name as my fanfic account, T-Rexcellent Reviews, if you are interested, please consider giving it a look, a like and subscription as it would really help me out.
Now onto answering some more fan questions from all of you guys…
HughJasz – Yep, you are correct mate, like Hermes, Athena, Hera, Poseidon and Apollo, Persephone has own motives concerning her interest in Kal, though hers are far less political and more personal… as it were, her echoing Hippolyta's opening lines of that chapter was very intentional on my part, the chapters title of Maternal Instincts refers just as much to her as it did to Hippolyta.
That being said though and I do want to clear a few things up here, her apology to Hippolyta was genuine, her protective feelings for Kal are real and her concerns for his safety are very, very warranted.
You've got remember something about Persephone, she knows what she's talking about, she's KNOWN Zeus, Hercules, and Hera a lot longer than Hippolyta has. Persephone was raised by her mother atop Mount Olympus since she was a little girl, she's known Zeus long enough to know how paranoid he gets when it comes to potential threats to his power, especially after the Fall of Ancient Greece when the rest of his pantheon finally turned their backs on him for good.
She knows he simply won't stop or be talked out of his plans for the future, and since he now believes Kal poses a legitimate threat to those plans, he isn't going to stop trying to kill or capture him, Persephone also doesn't fully trust Hera because of her reputation for scheming or her ability to protect him from some of the more man-murderous Amazons on Themyscira… or Hippolyta's ability to do so for that matter either.
Persephone had actually arrived not long after Alkyone had and was waiting outside in the hallway to see how things played out, the entire time, she could practically sense Alkyone's murderous intention towards Kal, which is why she both humiliated and scarred Alkyone before throwing her out of the room, before Hippolyta had a chance to.
Furthermore, Persephone also knows the lengths Zeus is willingly to go when it comes to getting something he wants… and she's speaking from her own personal experience on that front… let's just say, for all the reasons she might have wanted to stay with her mother, Persephone did have ONE very good reason to want to leave Mount Olympus behind for the Underworld, and that was getting away from her least favourite uncle… I'll let you connect the dots on why…
On the matter of her wanting to foster Kal though, Persephone is arguably correct when she tells Hippolyta that Kal would be safer down in the House of Hades with her and her husband, like Themyscira, Zeus is strictly forbidden from entering his eldest brother's realm after a certain… dark event involving the God of Sleep Hypnos… look up it, it's an actual Greek myth.
Unlike the Amazon's Island however, the Underworld is a lot more difficult for Zeus and his forces enter or even reach, being underground and all, but specifically the area which Persephone and Hades call home, which just so happens to be a near impenetrable fortress that has never been breached in all the years Hades has been ruling the Underworld, which is more than can be said for Themyscira, especially after the Harpies attack.
That being said, she doesn't fully understand Kal's unique biology and what long term separation from the Earths sun would do to him, but regardless, her goal is the same as Hippolyta's, keeping Kal safe from the likes of Zeus, Circe and Alkyone, its one of the reasons she gave him that Hellhound Horn after all.
Nameless hero 1128 – Thank you for the armour ideas, mate, I'll see what I can do about incorporating them into Kal eventual Champion of Themyscira outfit, which is what im referring to his Proto-Superman uniform.
Prynz Nykkho – Yes and no, while it hasn't been outright stated as of yet in story, Rao is actually the last of the Kryptonian Gods, just like how Kal is the last of the Kryptonians, all of the other Kryptonian Gods perished before or during the Destruction of Krypton, I might retcon that later on depending how the story grows, especially in regards to Zod and his followers, but for now, both Kal and Rao should be considered the last of their kind.
This in many ways is meant to reflect both the Olympian Gods the Amazons themselves, who despite both races surviving into the 21st Century, neither has really managed to regain their former numbers or power after the Fall of Ancient Greece, the Greek Pantheon as far as they know is the last godly pantheon on earth and even then, their kinds numbers are a shadow what they used to be, especially after so many Telchine Rebellions, same goes for the Amazons who used to rule a vast empire set on conquering Man's World which has now been reduced to a single island kingdom doing its best to hide from the rest of the world.
That said, Rao already has a relationship with the Greek Gods, or at least Zeus as he was the young Olympian's mentor and gifted him with the Thunderbolt Blade before Zeus turned on him when he asked for it back, he will also likely play a role in Apollo's personal story, as the two are both Sun Gods who have both suffered at the hands of Zeus, but beyond that, will see.
Evolution-500 – Thanks mate and thanks for once again pointing my spelling errors, rest assured I will go back and correct them eventually. As for Kal going to the Underworld, without giving too much away, I can tell you right now that Kal will be going to the Underworld… eventually, as well as Poseidon's underwater realm of Aquaria and even Mount Olympus one day, there are two important characters down there that Kal needs to meet, one he needs to get something from and the other he needs his help with…
… and before you ask, no, I'm not referring to either Hades or Hercules…
Lay Lord – honestly mate, at this point, neither can I, but that just shows I've written a good villian with Alkyone, rest assured though, once Kal discovers her and her sister's plans, the Queen's Circles days are numbered, in the immortal words of Jafar from Aladdin, Alkyone will get what's coming to her.
Durkasmurf – Yeah, as you may have noticed I'm someone who likes to make references to other franchises in my writings, some of it subtle, some of it not-so subtle, I am both a big fan of the Lion King and Assassins Creed, with Scar being the inspiration for a lot of Alkyone's grandiose delusional nature, as well as both Hermes and Alectryon taking a lot inspiration from Timon and Zazu respectively, Hermes attire was partially inspired by the traditional Assassin garb from Assassins Creed and Alectryon by the Eagle Ikaros in Assassins Creed: Odyssey.
Chiposkippy – Thank you mate, and please rest assured, this story is going to continue, I haven't come this far to stop now, though I have possibly considered breaking it up into a series of storis instead of just one giant story, with the sequel of this being called Superman: Champion of Themyscira or Superman: Prince of the Amazons, but we'll see, I am very fond of keeping the Son of Hippolyta title after all.
XxGargantuaxX – Thanks and yeah, politics is never good, especially Olympian politics, but at least it's not boring, as you can see from this chapter, like Persephone said previously, the other Olympians are beginning to take notice of Kal's unusual presence on Themyscira and as the Underworld Goddess predicted, their interest isn't entirely benign.
Cepha – With all do respect mate, I have to disagree with you on your opinion about what Hippolyta did to Thrax, that what she did to Thrax was arguably worse than what Hercules did to her and her sisters.
Hercules, who I want to remind you, attacked the Amazons without provocation and enslaved them, repeatedly forced himself on Hippolyta and made her bare his bastard son, then when she and her sisters fought back and escaped, he waged a war upon them that decimated her mother's empire and nearly ended their race, forcing them to flee from Man's World forever.
Hercules, who I want to remind you is also guilty of kin killing because he killed his first wife and children in a rage, you're saying that Hippolyta killing Hercules son Thrax in battle is worse than all of that? I respectfully have to disagree.
While it is true that Hippolyta was mostly motivated by her own personal need for revenge on Hercules, I want to remind you that Thrax wasn't some innocent babe or a young child who didn't know any better at the time, he was an adult when he died, as in old enough to have his own perspective beyond what he was taught growing up, question the morality of his actions and be held accountable for them.
The fact that he was also her biological son was irrelevant to the situation, she didn't allow for him to be raised by Hercules, he chose to side with his father, he chose to stand idly by and allow his father to torment his mother and when he became a man, he chose to slaughter his mother's sisters with sadistic glee and he ultimately paid the price for his cruelty, suffering a cruel fate at the hands of the women his father had abused.
In short, Hercules damned Thrax to his fate just as much Hippolyta did, but I can guarantee that neither of them sees it that way, the point is, Thrax wasn't some innocent victim here in this story, a poor child who had the misfortune of being raised a monster like Hercules and killed by his vengeful mother, he was a psychopathic Barbarian prince who was just born bad from the get go, his name came from the word Anthrax, the disease, that should be your first clue.
Besides, kin-killing is a pretty common theme throughout this story, as I mentioned before Hercules killed his first wife and children in a rage.
The Amazons killed all of the Barbarian bastards that Hercules men forced them to bare after they came to Themyscira.
Cronus killed his own wife Rhea for keeping him from devouring his own children and preventing a prophecy.
Alkyone killed her own little brother Alexios out of jealousy for their parent's attention.
Zeus killed his own grandson Asclepius right in front of his father Apollo for daring to help Perseus stop Hercules rampage of revenge against Hippolyta and her sisters.
As for Thrax haunting Hippolyta? I don't about that, but Thrax haunting in general… well see…
Onto the matter of the Olympians not noticing Diana's potential and while talking about Kal's, it's not really a case of that mate, especially at this point in the story. Kal is just the more noticeable one between the two, he's son of a Amazon queen who swore she would never have another son, the prince of a tribe of warrior women who don't allow boys to be raised amongst them, and the champion of a Goddess who generally is not fond of Demigods, this combined with his growing superpowers, is naturally going to get the attention of the Olympians, which as I have previously stated, is not necessarily a good thing.
No ones pretending that Diana is not nearly as strong as Kal mate, but I would like to remind you who the titular character of this story is, his superhero name is actually the first word in the title of this series, rest assured, Diana own strength will be recognised and she will be getting a larger role as the story progresses, which will explore themes of royal rank, godly favouritism, golden child status in comparison to Kal's journey as the two children of Hippolyta grow older and eventually apart as the reality of their respective situations becomes apparent.
Also, you're claiming that Diana can beat Hercules as a DC fan who has read other stories where she has done exactly that, and not as a character in universe, who obviously do not know that, besides, not only is my version of Hercules the strongest and most monstrous version of the character, but Hippolyta doesn't want Diana going anywhere near Hercules to even try, so its kind of a moot question, I'm afraid mate.
Yeye Awanngazia – Thanks mate, while Kal will be discovering more and more of his Kryptonian heritage soon, albeit unknowingly, him finding out about Hippolyta deception is not going to happen for a while, as it just does not serve the story at this point, rest assured though.
Sorry about the confusion with the Alkyone managed to push Philippus scene mate, I meant to write that she managed to push past Philippus in that scene, which was missing some proper context due to my Aspergerus acting up while I was writing, I have it now fixed and I'd like to thank you for pointing it out to me mate.
I understand your point mate, please keep in mind that in both of the scenes you are talking about, Alkyone would have been physically stopped by either Hippolyta or Philippus if the situation hadn't been resolved before they could act, the former Alkyone begrudgingly obeyed Philippus command and the latter Persephone beat Hippolyta to the punch.
Rest assured though, both Hippolyta and Philippus are getting sick of Alkyone's insubordination, and it is going to come to a head soon, though I do hope that the exposition about the delicate alliance between the various factions of Amazons on the island has gone some way to explaining why Hippolyta has to be careful with how she keeps the peace amongst her sisters.
Red567 – Hello mate, thank you for your many reviews they are very much appreciated, to answer your questions in order, yes, we are going with a DC version of Greek Myth, specifically my version of DC in my own personal universe with my version of Greek Myth, which will hopefully mean fun times ahead for all those who read this T-Rexcellent story.
Red567 – Yeah, as you may have realised by now, its not Kara who was inside that pod with Kal, but yes indeed the best canine character in DC comics, Krypto the Superdog, with a more Ghost the White Direwolf-like appearance.
Red567 – Yes, Krypto is best boy and baby Kal is just too adorable to properly put into words.
Red567 – Thank you mate, writing Hera's character was actually extremely difficult and to a certain degree, it still is, most stories about Hera in both Greek Myth and DC Comics usually depict her solely as a vindictive stepmother to her husband's illegitimate children and a scheming queen looking to overthrow Zeus and take the throne for herself.
While those traits are still definitely parts of her character, I also wanted to show off her other lesser explored traits as well, she is the Goddess of both Womanhood and Motherhood after all, so while she is still proud, stern and has more than a bit of a chip on her shoulder for all the years of abuse Zeus put her through, she is also respectful to those who give her the same amount of respect in return, does genuinely care about her worshippers and isn't so petty that she will ruin someone life for committing the smallest mistake in her presence.
The thing that separates her from being a pure-blooded villain in this story, is that for all her unpleasant attributes she still is capable of empathy and compassion for others, to put it simply, she's not Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones.
Its important to remember that while Hippolyta is the Queen of the Amazons and the de facto Ruler of Themyscira, the island still actually belongs to Hera, it's her godly domain after all, she's the one who built it, she's the one who protects it from both magical incursions and the eyes of Man's World, she's the boss your boss has to answer to, and while she does care about protecting her worshippers as well as giving them a true eternal paradise to live comfortably, it's still her house, which means the Amazons have to follow her rules and pay her appropriate respect, or else find a new home in Man's World, which as you can imagine, is not a very appealing idea to many of them.
Red567 – Yes, as I stated before Scar was a big inspiration for Alkyone and her Circle Sisters expanded personalities, and yes, they Amazons didn't really have a well thought out plan for when Kal asked why he was the only boy on the island, it's called wilful blindness and its more common than you might think, props to Epione for informing her queen of her sister and her friends schemes though, she and Myrto might be half-sisters, but they couldn't be anymore different.
Red567 – Sorry about that mate, but you don't have to fear for Krypto, I'm not that kind of author, I don't kill a dog just for the sake of killing a dog, especially not a good boy like Krypto.
Red567 – In DC Comics Greek Mythology no, but in actual Greek Myth, yes, Achillies actually did fight against the Amazons, specifically during the Trojan, where he was killed in battle by the Amazon Queen Penthiselea, who was either one of Hippolyta's older sisters or at the very least her sibling's namesake, who was then killed by Achillies when Zeus forced his brother Hades to bring the Demigod back to life.
Hercules and Achillies aren't the only Demigods to have trouble the Amazons throughout their history either, they're just the most famous, Theseus and Bellerophon, both Demigod Sons of Poseidon have also attacked the Amazons, with Theseus even killing the Amazon Queen Antiope, who was also either one of Hippolyta's older sisters or at least her namesake anyway.
The point is, combine those four with Thrax in this very story and even to a certain extent, Perseus, who while a genuinely good guy and a truly heroic figure, was indirectly responsible for the bloodline that would one day create Hercules, their greatest enemy, the Amazons actually do have some pretty good reasons to distrust and hate Demigods even more so than most men.
Hyprhnk – I'm glad I could incite you to read this story, mate.
WilliaMUSKlx See – Don worry, well get to the prologue scene, though most likely in a way that you wouldn't expect to.
