Later that night, back inside my house, I looked into my yearbook from Foster City School, where I found the page showing Mr. Beckwith's class, then looked back at the framed photos.
As I looked from one to the other, my heart ached with a yearning to go back to the way things were.
I placed my yearbook on top of my stereo, turned off my lamp, and tried to get some sleep, tearfully.
As I did, moving restlessly in my bed, I could hear Jane's words echoing inside my head.
"The truth is, Nathan, there'll come a time when we all have to graduate from elementary school. You spent five years..."
I opened my eyes to find myself back at the Foster City School patio, where it was graduation all over again, while Jane's voice was heard, saying. "...then you move your way up to middle school..."
"But I don't want to change schools!" I called out.
"There's no point of arguing your way out of this, Nathan." said Jane. "It's already happened."
I turned to see Jane sitting behind me, only to watch her disappear into oblivion, as well as those that were beside me...including the school.
"And one last thing," Jane's voice called again. "I doubt your Imaginary friends are welcome in middle school, whether it's here or there."
"No!" I cried upon seeing the Imaginaries disappear in front of me, before feeling the ground quake.
I ran as fast as I could from the crumbling patio to Room 29, where I knew I would be safe.
But before I could hurry inside, the ground disappeared beneath me.
I held onto the door as much as I could, trying to swing myself closer to the room, but then, the door shook rapidly. The hinges were starting to rust off!
I stared inside the room, then down at the bottom of the void, where Bowditch started to appear from below.
"No, please!" I begged. "I don't want to go back there! I want to stay here!"
But it was no use. The hinges had already rusted away, even the door disappeared, sending me down to Bowditch.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"
I woke up in a fright, breathing heavily as I looked around.
I was still in my room, and what I saw was just a nightmare.
And yet, it all looked so real.
