⧗ EPILOGUE ⧗
New York bored Mikhail.
It wasn't his favorite city. Not even his favorite theater hall, but nevertheless he performed every night, five times a week. It kept him busy, it gave him a solid alibi.
He never hung around for the after party.
As soon as the final bows were taken and people began leaving the theater, he too was gone as quick as he could. Mikhail had other business to attend to and he couldn't spend it all with clean up or celebration. He'd been here a month already, and had made a nice routine for himself.
Change out of his costume, return to nondescript civilian clothes. Leave out the back door and find that attorney who'd made eyes at him the other night.
But tonight was different.
He knew he was being followed. Not by someone particularly professional. Not by someone who didn't want to be seen. All the way from backstage to the rear entrance. Mikhail didn't have to take that way out, but he preferred the lack of traffic and crowds. Made it easier to disappear into the night.
Which would not be possible if he had a tail.
He'd hoped he'd lose them within the winding hallways, but he'd made it all the way outside when he heard the metal door creak open and someone stepping out.
The air was cold, threatening snow at any moment. His breath puffed in front of his face.
"Dmitri!"
Mikhail paused.
Then he turned, and smiled.
Dmitri will return in:
LIBERTY HORIZON
And of course, the credits song: Paint It, Black by the Rolling Stones
