Abe sat next to Maizie's bed, fingers drumming on the cot. His fingers were only inches away from hers. Only 24 hours after the events of Moscow and Maizie was still out. She hadn't budged an inch. Hellboy had explained to him of everything that had happened. The two visions she had with him. Nobody had realized that she had been bleeding out slowly until they got on the plane and got her checked out. He remembered how he had felt when he realized the full intention that Rasputin had planned for her. She was going to be the human sacrifice for Hellboy. Hence the reason why there had been a blood river to the monument.
He sighed. There was so much to take in after all the things that Hellboy had said. The only thing that really spurred his curiosity was the visions. Hellboy told him that he and Liz had kids, but there was a little girl with his skin color. A lighter blue, but still…his color. Never had he thought in his entire existence that he would be capable to have a child, much less a child in this world.
He looked down at his fingers drumming. He was tempted to grab her fingers and see if he could glean the vision. He stopped drumming. His fingers inched over. Almost touching.
"Still haven't woken up yet?"
Abe jumped as he turned to see Hellboy enter the room. He pulled his hand back. He stood up.
"No, not yet," Abe replied.
Hellboy cocked an eyebrow at him. He had seen what Abe about to do but he didn't say anything.
"Why don't you get some rest?" Hellboy said as he pointed to the chair. "You've been here the whole time since we arrived. I'll take over."
Abe shook his head. "I'm fine."
"Abe…You need some sleep. I don't think she'd want to wake up to you snoring on her bed," Hellboy said.
Abe sighed. "Fine. I'll just go for a swim instead."
Abe passed Hellboy. Hellboy sat down in the chair. Abe took one more look at Maizie before he left the room. Hellboy settled more into the chair as soon as he heard Abe leave.
"Damn Kid. You got that boy all stirred up with the vision of yours," Hellboy said as he leaned back.
One Hour Later
Hellboy cracked open a large yawn. It was pretty boring watching over someone waiting for them to wake up. He looked down at Maizie and was surprised to see her looking back at him.
"Bored?" Maizie's voice cracked.
He grinned at her, "Very."
She lifted a hand and her middle finger flipped up. He cackled. He patted her hand once she let it drop.
"I think you're alright," Hellboy said.
"Liz?" She asked.
Hellboy smiled, "She's fine."
She sighed. "Good."
"I'll go let everyone know you're awake," Hellboy said as he stood up.
She nodded and Hellboy turned and left. She had the room to herself. For a moment, that's what she wanted. Alone time to process what happened. She felt like it was only moments ago when she told Manning to catch her before she blacked out. Then there were her visions. For a second, terror flooded her, and the machine beeped beside her. The vision of Hellboy as King rattled her since it was the same as the one that Broom had been shown before he died.
Maizie sighed as she closed her eyes. She wasn't sure which vision would come true despite the choice Hellboy had made.
"Maizie?"
She opened her eyes and Liz stood at the edge of her bed. She smiled at her.
"I'm so glad you're okay," Maizie said.
Liz walked over to the side of the bed and climbed onto it, lying next to her. Her head settled against Maizie's.
"Same here," Liz said. "I wasn't sure if you'd ever wake up."
"I thought the same for you. That was terrifying. I thought I lost my best friend," Maizie whispered.
Liz took one of her hands. "For a bit, you did."
Maizie squeezed Liz's hand.
"You know, Hellboy told me about the vision," Liz said.
"Which one?"
Liz gave a little smile, "The good one."
"Oh yeah," Maizie said. "Those little ones running around. Hellboy scolding them like a little dad."
Liz giggled, "He told me about the other one. The little girl."
"Yeah, Abe's kid."
Liz shifted and looked at her, "who's the mom?"
Maizie was quiet for a moment then shrugged, "I don't know."
Liz turned her head and looked at the ceiling. She knew Maizie was lying, but she didn't call her out on it. They stayed silent, just being together and giving each other energy. Hellboy came walking in with Abe.
"Hello Maizie," Abe said as he spotted her. "I'm glad to see you're awake."
"Hi Abe," Maizie said.
She looked at Hellboy.
"Am I fired?"
The others looked at each other perplexed. "Fired?" Hellboy asked.
"Yeah," Maizie explained. "Before the mission, we were at threat of being disbanded. I knew my job was at jeopardy when Broom died. I was only here because of him."
Hellboy took the chair and shook his head, "Nah. I spoke to Manning while we were heading back here. He's not gonna disband the team. I told him what you did for me so there's no way you're going anywhere."
"So, I'm not at risk of being sent anywhere like Antarctica?"
Hellboy laughed, "Had you been anyone else, yeah I would've asked for that."
"Dick," Maizie said.
Hellboy and Liz laughed again. Maizie sighed in relief. She had a safe place now. A safe home. While Liz and Hellboy chatted, she looked up to Abe and met his eyes. The image of the little girl passed through her mind. The little girl that was Abe's….and hers.
The End
I'm so thankful that I still had readers who wanted to see the journey of Maizie and of her joining the BPRD. Thank you for being there and being patient as I finish this story. I started this years ago and with a full-time job and life, there wasn't much mental space to continue this.
Granted there was not many scenes between Maizie and Abe as I had hoped, but hopefully the next story will cover that.
Please keep a look out for its' sequel: Hellboy and the Golden Army
