The Voice Inside My Head

By Morgan Jenson

Bella POV - 1998

I walk inside the dorm and check the mail, again. I've become obsessed. I mailed my internship application in November. It's all everyone keeps talking about.

The deadline for mailing the application was December 15th. Supposedly, the acceptance letter will be mailed anytime after January 15th. It's now February and with only one person being accepted into the internship program, tensions are high amongst all the students. There was a post in the campus newsletter notating, over four thousand applications were received. I'm not holding my breath, but I can't help but check the mail multiple times a day.

I open the box and see the mail has been delivered, but no letter.

Bella POV - 1998 - March 10th

Still no letter.

I fall face down on my bed and put the pillow over my head. I've never been so stressed out before.

I think Angela is ready to strangle me. She doesn't understand, as she wasn't able to apply.

"Bella"

Angela says as she sits next to me on my bed and pulls the pillow off my head. I turn my head and look at her. I give her a sheepish look. She's been beyond understanding with me.

"Think about it this way. No news is good news, right? At least you haven't gotten a denial letter."

She's right. Denial letters have been received all over campus. A lot of rumors are going around too. Supposedly over half of the applicants have received denial letters from Twilight Graphics.

"Besides, the internship begins in June, there's still plenty of time."

Bella POV - 1998 - May 12th

I'm beyond frustrated-still no letter.

Spring break came and went. I did go home for the break and spent some much needed time and R with my family. That was the best thing about the year so far. Waiting for the offer or denial letter has been like a dark cloud hanging over our heads.

Thankfully, I just finished my last class of the day. Rumors are running rampant around campus and there's speculation there are only a few candidates left, but it's not as if everyone is sharing if or when they receive a denial letter. How do we know how many students are still waiting?

I get up to my floor and see the campus newsletter posted on my door. I pull it off and read the front page headline.

INTERNSHIP UPDATE.

I lower my hand that's holding the newsletter, look up at the ceiling, take a deep breath, and blink rapidly to keep my tears at bay.

Bringing the newsletter with me inside, I sit at my desk and read the article.

Creative Director, Tanya Denali of Twilight Graphics met with Dean, Michael Newton today to confirm the status of internship. With the internship beginning in less than a month, Twilight Graphics has been working around the clock to narrow down the applicants. Ms. Denali did confirm there are only 20 applicants left. (See the list below)

I stop reading the article and look below it to see the list of names. They've listed the names in alphabetical order by last name.

Adam's, Christy - Sophomore

Chadwin, Paul - Junior

Davis, Steven - Junior

Daniels, Peter - Sophomore

Ferguson, Jamie - Sophomore

Ingram, Jennifer - Junior

Jones, Timothy - Junior

Knight, Anna - Junior

Littles, Beth - Sophomore

Mitchell, David - Junior

Mason, Garrett - Sophomore

Peterson, Paul - Sophomore

Roberts, Courtney - Sophomore

Smith, Frank - Junior

Stevens, Henry - Junior

Swan, Isabella - Freshman

Tennison, Hillary - Junior

Thompson, Danielle - Junior

Vaughn, Edward - Sophomore

Wilson, Shannon - Junior

My name, I see my name! I beat out over 4000 other applicants, and I'm the only freshman in the top 20!

I look above the list, to read the rest of the article.

The last 19 denial letters and the one offer letter were mailed out today. This is the first year they've had that many applications, but it was to be expected, as this is the first year they allowed freshmen to apply as well. Ms Denali said and I quote: "Twilight Graphics wish the remaining 20 applicants good luck and we believe they have nothing but a bright future ahead!"

Bella POV - 1998 - May 16th

Done with my classes for the day I go back to my dorm. I check the mail and decide to go up stairs before looking through it.

Opening the door to my room, I see Angela is not back from the library yet.

Placing the mail on my desk, I take a seat, and begin sorting it. On the bottom, the last envelope I see is the letter from Twilight Graphics. I haven't heard any results for anyone on the list from the newsletter.

I open the envelope, unfold it, and start to read it.

Could you feel the frustration? Think she'll get it? I have the next chapter just about ready, which will answer that question.

Would love to hear your thoughts and opinions first though!
