Element of Surprise

Part 6: Watching from a Distance

A figure with a pair of high-powered binoculars and a portable listening device stared at his quarry. He listened to the sounds and confirmed what he suspected. This was the place. They were growing with leaps and bounds. Soon they would be ready for plucking. He just had to wait a little longer. There were too many adults around them. There had to be a way to get a few of them out of the way. The adults seemed to be up at all hours.

'If I could just put them all to sleep, I'll be able to snatch them,' the figure thought. 'But how to do it. This was going to take some major planning.'

The figure continued to watch and listen, at least for now. He sat back on his heels, thinking about how this plan had come about. He knew his subordinate needed workers. Taking older children and young ones only worked for so long. They all had free-will, which made it harder to control, but if they were to take them even younger, then they could grow up not knowing anything else. It was a perfect plan. Except for one thing, the young ones needed feeding and caring for. He knew just the person for the job. She could speak, but she understood her job. And if she didn't, she soon learned the consequences for it.

The figure pulled out his cell phone and pressed the button next to the name of his superior. "I have spotted five more. Yes, they are quite young, babies really. They will soon forget their former lives once we have them. I will work on retrieving them. It will take some time. I may need a crew. There are always adults around."

A long silence prevailed as the person on the other line responded.

"Thank you. I will begin the process of extraction."

The figure retuned back to watching his chose prey.
