Chapter Eleven: The Match
The sun was beating down on her face from the window. Alessia grumbled and turned in her bed. Hugging her pillow before leaning up. Her phone was vibrating due to Korra reminding her about tonight's match. Leaning up and yawning with a stretch. She stood up and walked out of her room. Hearing soft voices of Kuvira and Su in the living room. She ignored it while walking into the kitchen. Seeing a fresh pot of coffee, Alessia pulled out a small mug. Pouring herself some before putting the pot back. She added four creams and two sugars before stirring. Yawning again before taking a sip. She could see Lin leaning against the counter with her arms crossed. Raising a brow at the woman before brushing past her to the living room. She took a seat on the other side of the couch as Lin took the armchair.
"Good morning sweetie." Su's voice spoke. It was gentle as always. Alessia smiled and nodded her head once. Taking another sip of the coffee. The radio was broadcasting the weather before talking about the match tonight.
"We should go tonight. Support them." Kuvira spoke. Alessia nodded her head again.
"Yeah. Get the mind something else to focus on." Alessia added.
"Say. You never told me. Who are you crushing on?" Kuvira asked as Alessia choked and coughed on her coffee.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Alessia spoke. She could feel eyes all on her again. Su was smiling while holding Kuvira close on her lap. Lin had her legs crossed while drinking her coffee.
"Green eyes. That's all I know." Kuvira spoke to Su in almost a whisper.
"Ah. I see." Su spoke while still smiling. Hearing a thud against the door. Alessia hopped up quickly and left. She opened the door. It was the newspaper. The headlines were all about Tarrlok and Korra taking down hideouts.
"Have you seen this?" Alessia asked while handing the papers to Lin. She took them and rolled her eyes.
"Tarrlok." Lin snapped before setting the papers on the table. Alessia took her seat again.
"So…?" Kuvira asked.
"If I tell you, will you stop pestering me?" Alessia asked as Kuvira laughed and nodded. She stood up and went to the kitchen and Kuvira followed her. She turned to make sure the Beifongs were still in the living room. "Please don't say anything. It'll go away." Alessia whispered. Kuvira raised a brow. "It's Lin." She whispered into Kuvira's ear.
"Holy spirits! Are you serious?!" Kuvira nearly shouted.
"Keep it down! Don't judge me!" Alessia snapped.
"I'm not. I'm just surprised but happy!" Kuvira spoke softly.
"Everything alright dears?" Su asked as she came in followed by Lin.
"Yes! Everything is great." Alessia spoke as she glared at her friend.
"Yes. It's all good." Kuvira was smirking at her with her arms crossed. Alessia took a deep breath and held the bridge of her nose. It was going to be a long day.
She found herself sitting at a booth with Kuvira, Korra, Asami, Mako, and Bolin. They were talking about tonight's match.
"Hey, Asami said they got you an official uniform now!" Bolin piped up while looking at Alessia. She looked at him with a smile.
"That's good. I'm just a sub remember?" Alessia spoke.
"There are also a couple fan t-shirts for you and Kuvira to wear while supporting us." Bolin added as he pulled out two shirts. One for her and one for Kuvira. Alessia held up the shirt. It said number one fan with Pabu as the team mascot. Kuvira's was exactly the same as hers. It was an orange and red striped shirt.
"I'll wear it tonight." Alessia spoke. This had made Bolin super happy. Kuvira nodded her support as well. They had finished their food and paid. Alessia was walking with her arm linked with Kuvira's They were listening into the conversation.
"Korra, wanna go on a date with me?" Bolin asked. Alessia looked at her friend before at Korra.
"Yeah!" Korra spoke as they left together.
"This is bad." Kuvira spoke. She gave her friend a confused look. "Dating teammates before a match right before the championship match." Kuvira explained.
"Oh. Yeah, it's true." She spoke softly.
"Asami and I are going on a carriage ride. Meet you both at the arena later?" Mako asked as the two friends nodded. Watching Mako take Asami's hand and lead her away. Watching the lovebirds get into a carriage before turning to the side and sigh.
"You alright?" Kuvira asked. She nodded her head and leaned against her friend. "Come this way." She spoke lightly while pulling Alessia along. It was not long before they entered a new neighborhood. 'Oh.' She had finally caught on. Walking up the steps to a larger apartment building through some gates. It was a nice building. Kuvira knocked on the door. The door opened and it was Su. She was smiling.
"Hello dears! Come on in." She held it open for them as they entered. Alessia took her flats off and stepped to the side. Looking around. It was her first time here. Knowing Kuvira had probably been here a few times.
"Got any plans tonight?" Kuvira asked as Su shook her head. "Good. There's a match tonight." Her friend spoke while leaning against Su. Kissing her professor. Alessia blushed and looked away.
"Come, let me show you to the sitting room." Su spoke while holding her friend's hand. Alessia nodded and followed Su and Kuvira to a larger room. Lin was reading a newspaper in a dark green armchair.
"Look who came to visit Lin." Su beamed. Holding Kuvira close. Alessia felt her face turn pink as she saw the green eyes catch her before rolling her eyes at her sister. Alessia took a seat while holding her book in her lap.
"We'll be back." Su spoke softly while dragging Kuvira with her. Alessia pinched her nose and sighed softly. Crossing her legs and opening her book. It was not long before she heard them. The sounds they were making had made her blush.
"I'm gonna head out." Alessia spoke. Her face was dark pink. Lin looked at her and nodded. She could feel those green eyes watching her.
"Where are you going?" Lin asked as Alessia put her flats back on.
"Anywhere but here!" She spoke. Seeing Lin frown before rushing out the door.
She had made it to the avatar park before catching her breath. Why did she feel like this? Her heart was racing. She sat down by the tree where some air nomads were meditating. That seemed like a good idea. She sat in the lotus position while her book was next to her. Closing her eyes while taking a few deep breaths. It didn't take long as her mind began to clear up. Feeling her body relax. She could hear laughter from children running around playing. Parents yelling to keep their children close. People shouting to sell their shop items. Her mind began to drift. Thinking about her time at the compound. Watching Korra train with the masters the White Lotus had found for her. Feeling her pocket vibrate as she was snapped out of meditation.
"Hello?" She answered.
"Where did you go? Lin was upset when you left." Kuvira's voice spoke. Alessia blushed.
"I didn't want to sit in a room where I could hear my best friend and her girlfriend get it on. So, I left. I'm sorry." Alessia spoke.
"It's okay. Su wanted me to let you know that we'll meet you at the arena." Kuvira spoke.
"Awesome. I'm at the park. I'll be there soon. Got your passes?" Alessia asked.
"Yeah. See you soon." Kuvira spoke. She hung up her phone and placed it back into her pocket. Standing up and brushing off any dirt before making her way towards the arena. It wasn't a long walk before she found her friend waving at her.
"Hey!" Alessia smiled while giving Kuvira a hug. Her friend seemed to be glowing. She couldn't help but smile at her. She gently squeezed her friend's hand and then looked down. Raising a brow at a ring on her middle finger.
"Is that?" She asked while holding Kuvira's hand up.
"Beifong crest? Yes." She was smiling. "Su owns me." Kuvira explained.
"Um. You're a human being. Not an object." Alessia raised a brow.
"No. It's an intimate thing." She added.
"Ooohhh." Alessia spoke while hearing a shout. They turned to see Mako and Korra arguing. "What now?" Alessia sighed. Kuvira gasped as did Alessia. Seeing Mako and Korra kissing.
"What?" Bolin was holding flowers while he saw them. The man turned and ran. Smacking into Alessia.
"Can you cover tonight's match?" Bolin asked as Alessia nodded her head. Seeing her friend cry before running away.
"Bolin! Look what you did Korra!" Mako yelled.
"Me? You kissed me!" Korra snapped back while they ran after Bolin. Alessia was pinching the bridge of her nose and sighed.
"You are starting to become like Lin from doing that." Kuvira laughed as her friend shoved her playfully.
"Guess I had better get changed. Give our favorite professors hugs for me?" Alessia asked with a smile. Kuvira nodded and waved goodbye as Alessia made it to the team room. Seeing Mako and Korra giving each other glaring looks. 'Oh boy.' Alessia thought. She took a couple deep breaths before changing into her uniforms for the match. She bounced a little on her feet. Taking a few deep breaths.
"You got this Alessia. You're good." Mako grabbed her shoulder and squeezed it. She nodded her head as the announcer's voice boomed over the crowd who were cheering. They stepped onto the platform as the lights above blinded her for a second.
"And last but not least, introducing the Fire Ferrets!" He boomed as the crowd cheered. Alessia could feel her chest tighten while looking around. She couldn't recognize any of the faces. She felt her shoulder receive a smack by Korra who nodded. Alessia cleared her throat and took a stance. Her heart was beating hard against her chest.
"Ready?" The referee spoke as both teams nodded. "Go!" He shouted as two earth disks flew past her head. Alessia dodged by side stepping and flung a disk back around to the fire bender. He blocked it with ease.
"Hey, watch it!" Mako shouted as he and Korra crashed.
"Uh oh folks! Looks like the Fire Ferrets are out of sync tonight!" The announcer shouted.
"Hey! Focus!" Alessia shouted at them. Feeling a full force of water, earth, and fire hit her square in the chest. She felt herself go flying off of the platform.
"Oh that's got to hurt folks! The arguing sent their sub straight off the arena platform!" The crowd cheered and jeered at this. Alessia felt the wind knocked out of her as she hit the water below. Coming up and gasping for air. Her eyes were stinging. She was now pissed. Swimming over to the medics as they helped her out of the water. One of them bent the water off of her clothes and hair. Feeling the floor rise back to the room where Alessia watched Mako and Korra struggle. Anger was rising in her now. They were gonna cost them the championship match.
Taking a few deep breaths as the match went on. She could hear cheering as they lost this round. Alessia was back in the arena while wiping the sweat from her brow.
"Focus! Both of you!" She snapped. Hearing Mako grunt while Korra was glaring at Mako. "Get over it now!" She added.
"And match!" The referee shouted. Alessia stomped her foot and shot several disks at the fire bender who dodged them. He shot fireballs straight at her head.
"Head shots! Back one zone! Yellow fan!" The referee shouted and pointed at the fire bender who shouted at him.
"Fire Ferrets! Advance one!" He shouted. Alessia went up one zone. Korra had crashed into her and sent them back to a zone. Grunting with frustration. Korra apologized just in time for Mako to get knocked off.
Kuvira's POV
"Ah spirits. This is a bad match." She spoke with a frown. Seeing her friend get thrown off the platform.
"What is going on?" Su spoke, nudging her.
"Some kind of fight happened earlier between Mako and Korra." She replied. She could see Lin pinching her nose before looking back to the match.
"She is holding her own." She spoke and sighed. Seeing the Ferrets lose this round before the next round started. It was all or nothing this round. "Come on Alessia!" Kuvira shouted while cheering her friend on. Wondering if she could hear them. Seeing Alessia turn and spot her. Kuvira jumped up and down waving at her. She received a nod.
"She saw us!" Kuvira smiled while grabbing Su's arm and jumped a little. Feeling a side hug from her girlfriend before turning her attention back to the match.
"And there goes Mako! Two against Three! No wait! Three against one!" The man shouted as the crowd cheered as Korra was knocked off. Kuvira gasped and covered her mouth. Her heart was racing. Watching her friend down there was making her nervous.
"Come on Alessia!" Kuvira turned to see Lin cheering her friend on. She felt her heart beat fast at this. 'No. You promised not to tell.' Kuvira spoke to herself before going back to the match. Alessia was standing her ground. Watching her friend raise her arms to her face as earth disks slammed against her arms. Holding her breath before, wait.
"And I thought I have seen it all folks. Wait. Is she? She is! We got ourselves a dancer folks!" The man shouted. Alessia was easily dodging everything flung at her. The way she weaved and moved. Turning while flinging disks back at them.
"Su! She's dancing!" Kuvira beamed while shouting with excitement. Who knew that dancing would help one in a match. Her friend weaved a few more times before taking a stance.
"Oh spirits. There's the Lin stance." Kuvira laughed and crossed her arms. She felt the sisters looked at her.
"The what stance?" Su raised a brow.
"When Alessia is angry, she copies Lin's stance. You don't wanna mess with her." Kuvira explained while smirking. "Should be proud Lin, you taught her well." She nudged Lin who was smirking. Watching her friend move a few times and it was over.
End of POV
"That is a knockout folks! The Fire Ferrets take the match! They are heading to the Championship match!" The announcer boomed. There was a thundering applause.
"Winner! Fire Ferrets!" The referee shouted. Alessia had knocked all three opponents off the arena at once. Alessia sighed a relief before holding her knees to catch her breath. She felt her hand held up above her head as the crowd cheered louder. Korra was holding her hand up. She yanked it back before storming off to the changing room. Mako was speaking to Bolin as she watched them hug each other. Sighing with annoyance before turning to face the healer. It was their job to make sure they weren't injured before leaving. She had her shoulder out of place and winced as the healer set it in place. She was now sore. She quickly changed back into her clothes before slamming open the door. Walking down the hallway and outside. She spotted Kuvira who waved at her. Su was smiling at her and so was Lin. Wait. Lin was smiling at her? She felt her face flush a little as her heart started to beat faster.
"Alessia, wait up!" Korra's voice carried over the wins. Her smile disappeared as she rounded Korra.
"What was that?!" She shouted.
"What?" Korra frowned. "We made up. We are good now." Korra started.
"Good? GOOD?! That was the most embarrassing thing ever! Your childishness and immaturity almost cost us the championship match!" Alessia shouted at her sister.
"We didn't lose." Korra added. Alessia took the helmet and shoved it towards her sister who took it.
"Consider this my resignation! I'm through being a sub for the team! Grow up! All of you!" She snapped before turning her heels to leave.
"You wanna tell me what this is really about?!" Korra snapped. That had done it. Seeing her friend's eyes go wide. Su was pale faced while watching and Lin had her arms crossed.
"You! This is what it's about! I'm so sick and tired of you going around like you own everything! You are always doing whatever you want without consequences!" Alessia snapped back.
"What are you talking about?" Korra asked.
"You dating Bolin then kissing Mako? He is dating Asami! You kissed him not thinking what was going to happen to Bolin! He opted out because of you!" Alessia felt her blood begin to boil. Shen felt fire thrown at her. Alessia blocked it with ease.
"I can't help how I feel!" Korra shouted.
"Of course you can't! You love who you love but you should have left your nose out of the situation! All you think about it yourself! I always have to clean up your mess! I'm done!" Alessia shouted as Korra shot another fireball at her. Alessia took her stance.
"Stand down Alessia!" Lin's voice shouted. She sighed, turned her heels and left. Seeing Kuvira smirking at Korra with her arms crossed. Alessia walked past them and headed home.
It was not long before she found herself opening the front door and kept it opened for the others to come inside. Kuvira closed it once they were all inside. Alessia went straight to her room and changed. Sighing while coming back out and stopping. All three of them were looking at her.
"I'm sorry. I don't know what came over me." She frowned before taking a seat on the couch. She felt Su hug her from the side as Kuvira sat on the other side of her.
"You stood up for yourself." Her friend reassured her.
"It wasn't the best way to go but you did good." Lin spoke. Alessia nodded her head lightly.
"That last round. You really are a dancer." Su chuckled lightly while letting go and moved over to sit next to Kuvira.
"Su." Alessia spoke as her professor looked at her with a smile. "You owe me a home cooked meal." Alessia crossed her arms and leaned back against the couch. Her professor laughed and nodded.
"Of course sweetie. Perhaps dinner tomorrow?" She asked as they all nodded.
"I am still going to the championship match. For Bolin at least." Alessia added.
"I agree. Tea anyone?" Kuvira asked before getting up to make tea.
"What a night." Alessia sighed. Feeling Lin rub her shoulder before taking her spot in the armchair. Kuvira came back not too long after.
"Jasmine tea. Your favorite." Kuvira smiled as she handed Alessia a cup.
"Ah, thank you." She smiled at her friend before taking a sip. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath with a smile. Her fight with her sister was still ringing in her head but as of right now. She was happy here with her best friend and favorite professors.
"So Kuvira, who is Alessia crushing on?" Su asked with a smirk.
"No! We are not bringing this back up!" Alessia shouted while nudging Su playfully.
"I promised not to tell." Kuvira had her finger against her lips. Smirking at Alessia. Who in turn can feel those green eyes watching her.
