The prompt was : A new writing challenge

A new and weird one for whoever's in the mood (you can blame the bag of grunions I just found in the freezer): Pick a unique local phenomenon and find a way to write some version it into your fandom of choice.

I chose northern Lights

« Are you sure I need to wear that much clothes? » asked Laura, between two coughing fits. « I thought Baltar said the weather is very nice. »

« You're right but I have to show you something first. » He helped her put on the overweighted anorak, attached her hat and put on some mitts. He then secured her in the passenger seat of the raptor and took off. He wasn't sure if it was a good idea to expose her to temperatures that cold, her breathing was already erratic enough but she had to see that with her own two eyes. He watched her fall asleep near him, his heart clenching in sadness.

« Oh my gods. » She murmured, in awe. She touched her cheeks, and looked around her. She was not dead, not yet. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. « What is that? » She asked, her chin pointing to the sky, mesmerized. Green and yellow lights danced in the dark sky, reverberating on the fresh snow. She had never seen anything like that before. It was both frightening and fascinating.

« The magnetic field illuminates solar particles that enter near the pole. Tried to explain Bill, not really sure he understood the phenomenon himself. « Isn't it beautiful? » He asked, his eyes not leaving Laura's face.

She turned to him, tears in her eyes. « It is. » She summoned all her remaining strength and went to sit on her lover's lap. It was a tight fit, the two of them on the pilot's seat but they made do. Her head resting on his shoulder, she played with his jacquets buttons while watching the show. She was over-struck by a sense of déjà-vu but none of her emotions were tempered down by weed this time. She could literally feel her chest constricted by love and gratitude, and maybe cancer too. She snickered at that thought.

«What's funny? » She moved her head up to look at Bill and just lost herself in his eyes. The greenish strikes glow on his glasses, his gaze was both sad and tender underneath. She felt more tears coming. She didn't want to leave him, didn't want to leave that magnificent planet but she was so, so very tired. He caressed her cheeks and moved slowly his face to hers for a long slow kiss.

« Maybe we should just enjoy this. » She murmured against his lips.

« I am. » He said, his eyes far away. He snuggled her a little bit more against him, kissing her forehead, watching the last northern lights dance in the horizon.
