Chapter 1: Push To Start

Thomas eyes' shot open, a headache pounding straight from his forehead. He reached up and touched his head and felt something wet, it was blood. "Shit," Thomas said as he stood up. He was dazed, but after a quick once over the head wound seemed the worst of it, and thankfully it seemed mostly superficial.

Thomas was a few feet away from his shuttle. It was clear that it was damaged from the experimental launch, smoke furling up from the wreckage. He looked up at the sky and noticed southern lights covered the sky. These southern lights weren't normal-they were contacting cosmic energy from Thomas's shuttle coming into impact with this… place… although this place looked extremely close to the outback of Australia. But that couldn't be… Project New Era was supposed to travel to another dimension, not just another continent. Thomas then realized he didn't have his co-pilot in sight.

"Shit! Jonas!" Thomas said, running to the shuttle to look for his co-pilot. "Jonas!" Thomas said, looking for his friend. Jonas was nowhere to be found. "No," Thomas said, leaving the shuttles. "Jonas!" Thomas shouted looking for his friend. There was no answer… Goddamnit, come on Jonas… What if he burned up in the launch? Or was in pieces somewhere else? "Jonas!" Thomas shouted again now looking outside the shuttle. Still no answer, suddenly Thomas heard a beeping sound from the shuttle. Thomas looked at the shuttle; his eyes widening as he saw that it was about to self-destruct-a feature the feds claimed would make sure it never fell into enemy hands. "Shit!" Thomas shouted as he ran away from the blast. He jumped into a ditch as the shuttle exploded behind him. After a moment the heat died down and Thomas came out from the ditch to look at the exploded shuttle. "So much for that," He lamented while sitting down in the ditch.

Thomas noticed that it was getting dark and knew he had to find shelter. "Is that a road?" Thomas asked himself looking closely at the road ahead of him. "It is!" Thomas said as he stood up and started towards it. Thomas looked at the road-it seemed normal enough, grey asphalt with yellow and white markings-similar to a road from his dimension. Thomas knelt down and felt the rough surface with his hand. "Well, all roads lead somewhere." He said as he started walking down the road. Nightfall had come and it was starting to get cold. The southern lights were shining bright as Thomas walked along the road. Thomas tried to remember everything that had happened before the crash as he continued walking.

(Flashback)

"Thomas 'Titan' Gomez?" Commander Gunner said, looking at Thomas's file, then glancing at the young man in front of him.

"Yes sir," Thomas said, doing his best to stand up straight and make eye contact with his commander. Gunner smiled and then pressed a button on his desk, making a door open to reveal another potential candidate for the research project, Project New Era. "Jonas?" Thomas said looking at his childhood friend.

"Thomas? You're applying for Project New Era too?" Jonas asked, looking at the familiar face.

"Well it was my parents' project before they died…" Thomas said, "Figure'd I carry on the family legacy…"

Gunner then cleared his throat getting their attention. Both snapped to attention and looked at their commander. "Both of you will be part of this project," He said, taking an appraising glance at the two in front of him. "Thomas 'Titan' Gomez and Jonas 'Jinx' Miller you both will be the first to use Project New Era to uncover new paths to new dimensions," Gunner said with a strict tone.

"Wait, so your parents were working on technology for dimension travel?" Jonas asked, looking at Thomas.

"Yep, and they succeeded with me finishing the project." Thomas said with a smirk.

"Gentlemen, focus!" Gunner shouted.

"Sorry sir," Thomas said looking at Gunner.

The older man grunted, looking at the personnel files in front of him. "Titan, age 18 and already at the top of your class at Westfield… and Jinx, much the same- 19 also at the top of your class," Gunner said looking at their files.

"Yes sir!" They both said.

"Perfect… tomorrow morning you two will be the first to start Project New Era," Gunner slamming the files shut. "Good luck."

(End Of Flashback)

"This makes no sense… we traveled to a new dimension not across the world," Thomas said while walking. Suddenly Thomas saw a semi truck heading his way. "Hey!" Thomas said, trying to wave down the truck. He moved to the middle of the road, still trying to wave down the truck. The truck didn't seem to slow down; it started to speed up while honking its loud horn. "Hey! Wait! HEY!" Thomas shouted in fear. He stuck his hands in front of him, bracing as best he could for impact. Without knowing, Thomas blasted cosmic energy with his hands. It impacted the front of the truck, making it flip over. "Holy shit!" He shouted, not knowing what he just did. Thomas' hands were glowing with a pulsing purple light for a moment, then the light faded and his hands were back to their normal tannish color. Thomas looked at his hands still not knowing how or what he did.He looked at the semi, smoke pouring out of the front threatening a sudden fire, then ran over to it to see if anyone was inside.

"Hello? Is anyone there?" Thomas said, looking around the wreck he'd somehow caused with his unknown power. Thomas looked closely inside as a hand hit the glass. "Hold on! I'll get you out!" Thomas said while trying to open the door. The door to the semi was locked, so he looked around for something to break the window. "Come on man, think!" Thomas said to himself. He then wondered if he could use whatever power he had to break open the window. "Alright, Alright…" Thomas said, jumping around like a boxer in the ring-or at least his best approximation of one, he hadn't exactly watched much boxing before all this happened. Thomas clenched his fight and then swung at the window. The tempered glass simply bounced his hand off, causing a sharp pain to radiate through his probably broken hand. "Fuck*!" Thomas said, holding his hand. "Okay… Super strength is not on the list of whatever this is." Thomas said, still holding his hand.

Thomas's hand then started to glow again, the pain quickly fading as the lilac light dissipated. "But healing is!" Thomas said, happily surprised. Okay, maybe I can try that whole beam of energy thing again… He focused the energy that was in his hand and hit the window, smashing it completely. Thomas covered his eyes as the glass shattered and then once it was cleared Thomas pulled the person out of the truck.

To Thomas's surprise this wasn't a person inside the cab, it was an English Bulldog. Well, that's not quite right, more like a human sized English Bulldog wearing a yellow shirt with the logo of the trucking company it worked for. Thomas dragged the dog over to the side of the road, fire now erupting from the engine of the semi. The dog didn't look hurt that badly but there was still some chance of head trauma, given the large bruise now forming on its forehead. "I guess we really did travel," Thomas muttered to himself sitting next to the dog.

The bulldog groaned in pain as he squirmed a bit. "Hey, you were in an accident… You're gonna be okay." Thomas said, looking down at the dog. The bulldog slowly opened his eyes and saw Thomas looking down at him. His eyes widened as he screamed. Thomas also screamed as the two backed away from each other.

"Alien!" The bulldog shouted before picking himself up and running away past the wreckage of his truck. "Wait, you can talk?!" Thomas said while watching the dog run away from him. Once the bulldog was out of sight, Thomas stood up noticing the southern lights flickering again. This triggered an instant headache in the young man. "Ah!" Thomas said, falling to the ground while holding his head, remembering what had happened before the launch.

(Flashback)

Thomas and Jonas were on their way to the shuttle. Thomas stopped while looking up at the shuttle, its gleaming hull looking down at him. He thought about his parents and their life's work on this project. Thomas fiddled with his helmet in his hands a moment before looking back at the shuttle.

"You ready?" Jonas asked, looking at his friend.

"Yeah, I am," Thomas said as he looked back at Jonas.

"Let's go make history," Jonas said while putting on his helmet.

Thomas nodded and put on his helmet and joined his friend in the shuttle. They both went over the safety and starting procedures of their shuttle and then were okayed to launch.

"Push start to forever alter the course of history," Jonas said while looking at Thomas. Thomas smiled and then pressed the button to start their shuttle. Everything started smoothly with the machine working the way it was supposed to do.

"Project New Era we have lift off," Jonas said with a smile. In front of the shuttle a portal started to form with different places they could go. They were about to choose a place to go until the portal became unstable.

"Something's wrong…" Thomas said while trying to get the portal under control. It was strobing through different realities, each flickering quickly in the now growing circle in front of them. Nothing seemed to work as Thomas tried all the methods that his parents had said if something went wrong. Suddenly the portal sucked them in for an unknown destination. The shuttle warped through different lanes of inter-dimensional existence. The shuttle started to break apart, alarms blaring as it lost panels and started shuttering, not being able to handle the cosmic radiation while traveling.

They could see rapid color changes in their travels. Colors they knew and colors they have never seen before. Everything sped up and then a bright light shined their eyes and finally… nothing.

(End of Flashback)

Thomas's headache went away and he was able to recover himself from the sudden flash of memories he'd seen. "So that's how it all started." Thomas said, picking himself off the ground. "Okay, so, wherever I am, I'm guessing dogs are like the people here?" Thomas said still not understanding where he and Jonas landed. As for Jonas, Thomas hoped his friend had somehow survived the crash landing like he did. "I need to find civilization, but I still need to keep hidden from these dogs if there are more of them." Thomas said as he started walking in the direction the bulldog had ran hoping maybe there was a town or city in that direction. To Thomas's luck there was a large road sign that read "Brisbane, Australia 20 km".

"Well, I guess I need to get walking…"

(Meanwhile)

"Dad! I'm bored…" Bluey kicked her legs on the couch, her back flat on the floor.

"Well bored, I'd love to help, but your mum left me a list of things to do and I can't play with you right now. Why don't you see what Bingo's up to?" Bandit replied, scrubbing the baseboards in the front living room.

"She's busy on a video call with Lila; they're just talking about what they're going to be for the school dress up party."

Bandit sighed, "Tell ya what, when I'm done with my list we can play. If I do it on my own it'll take a while, but I bet with some help I could probably get it done faster…"

Bluey scrunched up her face, "Is this you trying to get me to help with chores again?"

"Alright, you got me." Bandit admitted, "But I'm serious, if you want to play I need this list done. Your mum works hard and we need to make sure she gets a break from the housework from time to time. So, what do you want to do?"

Bluey thought for a moment, "Okay, I'll help, for mum."

"Good girl." Bandit smiled. He pulled a slip of paper out and glanced at the list, "Here, this is one you can do, dust the windowsills."

"Okay dad, I'll get the duster." Bluey ran off to get the duster from the closet.

It took about another two hours, with Bluey and later Bingo assisting, but the Heeler house was cleaned from top to bottom.

"Alright girls, one last thing to do." Bandit looked at the list.

"What else could we possibly clean?" Bingo asked, dramatically flopping onto the couch.

Bandit rolled his eyes, "It's not cleaning; your mum wants us to pick up some emu steaks. Apparently one of her coworkers swears by them and she wants to try it."

"Where are we gonna get emu steaks?" Bluey asked.

"I have a friend from work whose brother runs a farm not far from here and he recently started raising emus. I called him yesterday and he said he had some emu steaks, so we're going to drive over and pick them up."

"You have friends?" Bluey asked in surprise.

"Of course I have friends, you cheeky little bugger!" Bandit tickled his daughter, who giggled. "Now let's get going, I want to have them so I can surprise your mum with them for dinner tonight."

It was a short drive outside of Brisbane to the farm. As the Heeler family 4x4 turned off the highway they drove over a few gravel paths before entering through a gate with the farm's sign hanging from it. "Alright girls, here we are 'Paradise Farm'." Bandit pulled the vehicle to a stop in front of the farm's shop. The three exited the car and Bingo immediately squealed.

"Dad! They have wallabies!" Bingo pointed excitedly to a fence where there were half a dozen of the creatures.

"Oh! Can we go look at them? Please?" Bluey pleaded.

Bandit chuckled, "Alright girls, just don't climb over the fence and stay where you're supposed to. I'll be right in the shop if you need anything."

"Thanks dad!" The girls shouted as they excitedly ran over to the fence to look at the small marsupials. The two hurriedly stepped onto the small wooden platform to see into the pen.

"Oh, look! There's a baby one!" Bingo pointed at a small wallaby nibbling on a bit of grass.

"Aw!" Bluey cooed, "And that must be its mum!" She pointed at a slightly larger wallaby nearby.

"I wonder if they have any other animals?" Bingo asked, glancing around at the fences nearby.

"Well of course they do, it's a farm." Bluey replied. "Come on, let's look for more."

"Wait, but dad said to stay where we're supposed to."

"We are, we're just looking around a bit." Bluey replied, waving her hand. "Oh! Look! Maybe they have some animals in that barn. Mackenzie's always talking about sheep; maybe they have some of those here."

"Bluey, I don't think we're supposed to go in the barn."

"They don't have any signs or anything, and besides the door's open…" The young blue heeler quickly darted into the barn.

Bingo sighed and followed her older sister inside. "Okay, I guess…"

Inside the barn was mostly empty, there were some piles of hay and a few burlap sacks, but otherwise it was a disappointment.

"Aw, I wanted to see some sheep." Bluey pouted.

"Let's go back; dad's probably looking for us." Bingo said, looking around at the not-as-well-lit as she'd like barn. Suddenly there was a slight rustle behind one of the stacks of bags. Bluey pointed at the stack.

"Come on, there's something hiding back there! I wanna see what it is." She whispered to Bingo. Bingo fretted, but followed her sister. "On the count of three we'll both jump behind and see what it is." Bluey held up her fingers, "1…2…3!"

The two girls jumped out and looked at the source of the noise.

"Aah!" Three screams rang out.

"It's a monster!" Bingo shouted, frozen in place, terrified of the strange creature in front of her.

"No, I'm not a monster!" The thing said as it waved its… paws?

"Well, if you're not a monster, then what are you?" Bluey asked.

"I'm a human." The human replied. "My name is Thomas."

"What's a human?" Bluey asked, circling around to step in front of her sister.

Thomas glanced at the two small dogs in front of him. These two look smaller than the bulldog, I think they might be kids… "Humans are a type of animal; we're descended from primates-like monkeys."

"If you're a monkey, where's your tail?" Bingo asked suspiciously.

"Humans don't have tails, we're descended from primates-that means a really long time ago we were the same animal-but over a really long time we changed."

"Oh, like dinosaurs." Bingo replied.

"Um, I guess, yeah." Thomas shrugged, not sure how to respond.

"Our dad's an archaeologist; we have all sorts of fossils at our house. Maybe he knows about humans." Bingo said, looking over at Bluey.

"I dunno, dad never mentioned them before and you know he never stops talking about all the fossils he finds on his trips." Bluey said.

Thomas cleared his throat, "Well, I'm not exactly from your world, so there's a good chance humans don't exist here."

"You're not from our world?" Bluey asked.

"No, I'm from a different dimension. My world sent me on a mission to discover new places where humans can live-our planet is having some problems right now and we need to see about other places that might be okay for us to stay-but my ship crashed and so I'm stuck here for now."

"So you're an alien?" Bingo asked.

"Um, I guess? I'm not from your planet."

"But then how do you speak English?"

"I learned it when I was a kid. That and Spanish." Thomas shrugged.

"Hmm… Bingo, I need to talk to you for a minute. Thomas the alien, you stay here for now." Bluey pointed at where Thomas had been sitting. Thomas complied and the two girls took a few steps away and whispered amongst themselves, occasionally glancing in his direction. After about three minutes Bluey turned back to Thomas. "Okay Mr. Alien, we're going to take you home with us. Mum and dad probably can figure out how to help you."

Thomas blinked, "Actually my name is Thomas Gomez, but thank you."

"You're welcome Mr. Gomez." Bluey replied. "Mum and dad always say to help people in need, and you're stuck on a different planet."

"That means you need lots of help." Bingo added.

Thomas smiled, "Thank you girls…" He paused, "Do you two have names I can call you?"

"I'm Bluey Heeler, and this is my little sister Bingo."

"Thank you girls."

"Now come on, we need to sneak you in the boot." Bluey grabbed Thomas' hand.

"Wait, what?"

"Well, mum and dad can't say no once you're home with us, so come on, we need to get you there." Bluey pulled Thomas out of the barn. "Coast is clear. Hurry!" Soon Thomas was bundled away under a handful of children's toys and a picnic blanket.

"Hey girls! Sorry for the wait." Bandit smiled as he saw his daughters by the wallabies.

"It's okay dad." Bluey smiled.

"Let's get going. We can get these in the oven and then play something while we wait for mum."

It was a mostly smooth ride back to the Heeler house, with Thomas overhearing most of the conversation between the patriarch and his daughters. It seems like they have most of the same stuff as we do-at least social and tech wise. It's lucky I ended up here and not somewhere completely foreign. Eventually the car came to a stop.

"Alright, let's get you two out." Bandit said, and soon both girls had been undone from their carseats. Before Bluey left the car she glanced back at Thomas.

"The shed behind the house is always open. Hide there for now. We'll get you after mum gets home."

Thomas waited a few minutes, then poked his head out from under the picnic blanket. It looked like a pretty normal suburban cul-de-sac, and thankfully the 4x4 had been pulled fairly far into the drive, meaning it was blocked in by a hedge and the side of the house. He undid the rear door and crept out, quickly dashing across the backyard to a small shed. "Well, now I wait and hope that they don't want to turn me into some government agency to have me sliced apart into a million little pieces," Thomas said to himself.

Thomas waited and waited for what seemed like hours and then eventually fell asleep on the ground. Thomas started waking up when he heard someone talking outside of the shed. Suddenly the door opened and Thomas heard Bluey talking. "See!" Bluey said pointing at Thomas. "Ahh!" Chilli and Bandit both screamed. Thomas shot awake also screaming. "Mum! Dad! It's okay, he's friendly!" Bingo said Reassuring her parents. "What is that thing!" Chilli shouted in fear. "He's a human," Bluey said looking at her mother. "Get out! Shoo!" Bandit said, trying to scare Thomas away. "Dad no!" Bluey said, trying to stop her dad. Bandit then throws a pot at Thomas. "Dad!" Bluey and Bingo both shouted. Thomas cover his face about ready to get hit with the pot.

Thomas suddenly made a force field with his powers and it blocked the pot from hitting his face. The force field made a blue glow as the pot smashed against it. The Heeler family was speechless. "Ooo pretty!" Bingo said looking at it. "Oy Bandit, what do you got in there? A Christmas tree?" Pat their next door neighbor asked. Bandit quickly looked out the door of the shed and looked at Pat. "Uh, yeah! Just seeing if the new lights work!" Bandit said before quickly shutting the door with his family inside. Bandit turned and looked at Thomas who took down the force field and looked at the family. "Spill it! Who are you and what are you!" Bandit shouted while guarding his daughters and wife from Thomas. "Dad, he's a human! We told you!" Bluey said, trying to get past her dad. "Yeah! What's a human?!" Bandit asked, still looking at Thomas. "A distant cousin of monkeys!" Bingo added.

"His name is also Thomas," Bluey spoke up. "Thomas?" Chilli asked looking at her daughters. "Yeah, that's my name," Thomas said slowly standing up. "He can talk?" Bandit asked. "Yeah! Isn't he cool!" Bluey said, wagging her tail. "I-I guess?" Bandit said, still looking at Thomas. "Bandit," Chilli whispered to her husband. "Right, Um… Mr, Thomas uh human thing! Where are you from mate?" Bandit asked. "It's just Thomas and I'm from Washington DC in the United States but I'm from a different dimension from yours," Thomas explained. "So you're an alien?" Bandit asked. "Pretty much… In my dimension dogs like you are more… like pets and don't talk or walk on two legs," Thomas explained.

"Ooo dad can we keep him as a pet?" Bluey asked. "What? No! I mean, well is he house broken?" Bandit asked. "Don't worry I use the toilet like you but I'm not a pet," Thomas explained. Chili and Bandit then talked for a moment whispering about what they will do or should do with Thomas. Bluey and Bingo giggled and whispered while looking at Thomas. Bandit and Chilli then looked at Thomas before giving him a solid answer. "Okay mate you don't seem too dangerous other than your little light trick but can you please explain everything about how you got here and why?" Bandit asked. Thomas nodded before taking a deep breath before explaining everything in detail about his arrival.

(Meanwhile in Downtown Brisbane)

A lonely homeless terrier was walking along the alley pushing his trolley cart until he bumped into something. The Terrier then looked at what he bumped into and saw someone laying on the ground with a cloak over them. "Hey mate you okay?" The Terrier asked while looking at the body. The body groaned and twitched. "Oh good you're alive," The Terrier said while walking to the body. The Terrier then kneeled down to the body's level. "Are you sure you're okay mate?" The Terrier asked again. Suddenly the body grabbed The Terrier by his neck and stood up.

The Terrier tried to get away but couldn't break from the strong grip. Suddenly the cloak fell off and it was revealed to be Jonas all burnt up. Jonas then sucked the life out of Homeless Terrier until he was nothing but a dried Raisin this healed Jonas to a point that made look better but not fully. Jonas popped his neck and then placed his cloak back on. Jonas still had a limp when he walked but at least he wasn't in so much pain anymore. Jonas walked back into the darkness of the Alley searching for another victim to take to heal himself fully.
