Chapter 19

When we arrive at the Bell Tower, we manage to meet a man and he gives us the Dowsing Machine, we take the item, which is actually useful for finding the hidden items.

When we are in front of the tower, we notice that it is burnt. Kris says, "Is this the Bell Tower? I mean...it looks burnt..."

"The Bell Tower is actually over there." Lillie points at the other tower beside the tower we're in front of.

I say, "This is the Burnt Tower. I have heard of a legend...this tower is formerly known as Brass Tower, it was once as majestic as the Bell Tower to the east. Built 700 years ago, it was said to be the roost of a silver-colored Pokémon and the rainbow-hued Pokemon. But 150 years ago, the tower was struck by a lightning bolt that ignited a fire that raged for three days. Both Pokemon that roosted on the Bell Tower escaped to the skies unharmed, and a sudden downpour quenched the fire. The silver Pokémon flew off, while the rainbow Pokémon resurrected three nameless Pokémon that perished in the blaze before flying off as well."

"And they are the Ho-Oh and Lugia." East says. "My Mom did tell me about the legends when we were little."

And when we entered the place, we noticed two trainers in front of us. We of course recognize one of the two people.

"Uncle Morty!" We gasp in delight, and Morty is surprised to see us.

"Ash! Lillie! Reisa! East!" He gasps in surprise, but then the other man walks to us and says, "My name is Eusine. I'm on the trail of a Pokémon named Suicune. I heard rumors that Suicune is here, so I came to look. Take a look at the basement through the hole in the floor."

We follow the man as we peek through the place, and we are surprised to see Raikou, Entei, and even Suicune there. Eusine points at Suicune and says, "There. Suicune is down there. I could go downstairs, but I knew it would run away in no time. I know. I have tried many times…"

Morty says, "Eusine might be very fond of Suicune, but he doesn't mean any harm."

"So you guys know him?" Kris asks.

"This is Morty, he's an old friend of my parents, and he is also the Gym Leader of Ecruteak City." I say.

"Wait, he's the gym leader?" Ethan gasps.

"Because my old friend is here on the trail of Suicune, I decided to investigate the Burned Tower. Ecruteak has a legend about these legendary Pokémon: Suicune, Entei, and Raikou. As the Gym Leader of Ecruteak, I must have a proper understanding of it."

Before he can continue, Silver suddenly appears in front of us, and he seems to be holding a woman in his arms. "You..."

Silver says, "Oh, it's you."

Morty notices that the one he's holding is a girl, and Morty says, "Irena! What have you done to my daughter?"

"I've done nothing. I merely found her here and thought I should extend a helping hand. She's all yours now." Silver just throws Irena to Morty, and then he turns to us, "You must be here to catch the legendary Pokémon to make yourself look strong."

"What do you mean?" Kris asks.

"That is only a dream. You see, the legendary Pokémon suits a Trainer like me who has sworn to become the strongest Trainer. A battle with Team Rocket Grunts is just right for you!" Silver says.

"Excuse me?" We are offended by his words, and I decide to fight him. Silver sends out Gastly as his first Pokemon, I go for Croconaw and it defeats the Pokemon with ease. The Zubat is defeated by Pikachu's Thunderbolt, and Magnemite is defeated by Houndoom's Fire Fang."

"Out of desperation, weak people sometimes do OK at fighting back." Silver taunts as he sends out his final Pokemon, Croconaw.

Ash goes for Bayleef to battle him, and after Magical Leaf and Vine are dealing a lot of damage, Silver notices his Pokemon is about to faint, and he asks, "Don't you get that I'm going easy on you?"

"Those are the famous words from trainers who don't admit to being weak. I have been tired of hearing that." I say as Bayleef defeats the Croconaw in the end.

"…Humph! I'm not fighting with another weakling ever again. It's just too much playing around." Silver mutters.

"The only weakling I see is you..." Reisa mutters.

"…Aw, whatever. You would never be able to catch a legendary Pokémon anyway." Just then, we hear roaring, and we notice that the Team Rocket trio has appeared with some grunts and they're surrounding the Legendary Beasts.

"Team Rocket!" I gasp.

"It's the twerps again." They try to attack us, and we all send out our Pokemon to battle. But just when Silver sees me and Ethan using Poliwhirl and having King's Crowns, he yells, "Both of you should evolve your Poliwhirl, that way you'll get more chance of winning."

This is actually the first time we agree with Silver, and both Ethan and I do the mock trade to evolve them into Politoed, by using the Perish Song, all of the Team Rocket grunts' Pokemon are fainted.

Politoed: The Frog Pokemon: Water Type. Evolved from Poliwhirl by trading with a King's Rock. When it expands its throat to croak out a tune, nearby Poliwag and Poliwhirl gather immediately.

We also notice Morty using Gengar on the famous trio, and he asks, "So what are we going to do with them?"

"Our Mom somehow want those three alive." I say, before having Pikachu using Thunderbolt to send them flying. "As for the others..."

We notice Raikou, Entei, and Suicune use their Thunder, Sacred Fire, and Hydro Pump to kill all of them. And then the three of them turn to us.

"We heard about you capturing Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and even Mew with you." Raikou says.

"I've also heard how the Unown created a fake me to harm you, you have my apologies." Entei says.

"Don't worry. We're glad that everything is fine." I say.

Then both Raikou and Entei want to join us, while Suicune decides to run off on his own. Eusine says, "Did you see it? Suicune raced by like a blur, right in front of my eyes! I have been chasing Suicune for almost ten years, but I have never been this close! I'm all choked up! By the way... It was clear to me that Suicune took notice of your presence. Ecruteak's legendary Pokémon are said to come to people only when they recognize their talents. Perhaps I should be more aggressive toward Suicune... Anyway, we will meet again!"

Then he runs off, Ethan asks, "Hey, where's Silver?"

We then notice that he has already left. We are confused, but we decide to say nothing. Morty then also takes out the badge and explains the situation to my parents, and Kris asks me, "What is the badge that Morty is holding?"

"That's the badge of Team Alpha." I say. "An organization outside of the International Police to battle against crime. Each of the Regions has two families situated for duty, and our parents are the leaders."

"Wow..." Then we hear waking noises, and Irena is waking up. Morty rushes to her and asks, "Irena... are you okay?"

Irena notices her father and says, "Dad... I..." Then she also notices us. "Ash? Lillie? East? Reisa? You're here?"

"Nice to see you again, Irena." Reisa says, "But what were you doing at the Burned Tower?"

Irena says, "I noticed Team Rocket coming and I was knocked out. The next thing I know is that I'm here..."

Morty says, "I see, you really had make me worried."

I say, "Now that we're done here, should we have our gym battle now, Uncle Morty?"

Morty sighs and says, "Of course, how about coming tomorrow? I'll be waiting for you."

Then that night, Irena decides to spend some time with us as we talk about the past.

The next day, it is time for the two of us to battle Morty, the Gym Leader. I have a secret weapon and I hope that my plan will work. When we get to the gym, we find that it is actually spooky.

We find the Gym Guide and he says, "Yo! Champ in the making! The Trainers here use Ghost-type Pokémon at will. A ghost is like a shade or a phantom... It won't do any good to use physical strength alone."

"Of course, considering that Uncle Morty's family is the Ghost Type representative family of Team Alpha..." Reisa says.

We walk on the bridge, which is dark, and we have a hard time walking through. The first trainer is a Medium named Georgina, she says, "Can you inflict any damage on our Pokemon?"

She has 5 Gastly in her team, so Ash goes for Butterfree. I use my male Butterfree. Its aim is to use Psychic-type moves to knock out all the Ghost and Poison-type Pokemon, but Butterfree has been cursed as it takes a lot of damage. It also uses Spite, which causes the Pokemon moves to get lowered. "Ah! Well done!" The Medium says.

Just then, the candles surrounding them are blown off, making us unable to see where they are going. But we quickly get to the second trainer, which is a Medium named Grace. She says, "Not sure of your way? Defeat me if you want a hint!"

She uses two Haunters in her team, while I use my Pink Butterfree instead, using the same strategy as my male Butterfree, but try to make sure that the Psychic moves are Super Effective against them. After knocking it out, the trainer says, "Wh-what? Having trouble with where you're going? The path is just right before your eyes."

As we leave the second trainer alone, we find the third one, which is a third Medium named Edith. She says, "I spent the spring with my Pokemon. Then summer, autumn, and winter... Then Spring came again. We have lived together for a long time."

We are a little confused at why she said those things, but she only uses one Haunter, and this time I go for Noctowl, with the Foresight, it manages to show where the Haunter is and defeat it with the Take Down. "Wins or losses...I experienced both."

And the final trainer before reaching Morty is a Medium named Martha, she says, "I shall win!"

Then she uses two Gastly and a Haunter, I go for Umbreon, using the Dark Type advantage to defeat all three Pokemon with ease. "I...I...I lost..."

And when we finally meet Morty, we notice that he's not alone, there is Irena and the other children. Morty says, "I'm expecting you."

"Great." I say, "But we can come back... I think we're interrupting something?"

"Oh, I was just lecturing my students about the Ghost Pokemon. Teaching is another part of the gym leader's job. Thanks for helping out, guys. I think that's all for now."

Then he recalls all the Ghost Pokemon in the area, and then he introduces us to the students and the students want to see our matches.

"Here in Ecruteak, Pokémon have long been revered. It's said that a rainbow-hued Pokémon will come down to appear before a truly powerful Trainer. I believed that tale, so I have secretly trained here all my life. As a result, I can now see what others cannot. I see a shadow of the person who will make the Pokémon appear. I believe that person is me! You're going to help me reach that level!" Morty says.

I say, "We'll see about that."

Then Irene becomes the referee and she states that we're going to have a four-on-four battle, which I'm surprised about since this is only the fourth gym and the last gym only uses two.

"Are you ready, Ash?" He asks me. "Gastly!"

He sends out Gastly, and I say, "Noctowl! Go!"

Much to other's surprise, Noctowl is supposed to be the secret weapon, but I know what I'm doing. "Noctowl! Hypnosis!"

I want Noctowl to make Gastly sleep, but Gastly dodges, disappearing in the process. Gastly is actually fast as Noctowl is trying to dodge the Confuse Ray. I have Noctowl use Foresight, and it soon finds Gastly. Noctowl then attempts to Tackle Gastly, but Gastly easily dodges the attack again and again. After failing to Tackle Gastly, Noctowl tries to use Hypnosis.

"Gastly! Don't look! Use your Lick attack!" Morty says, and Gastly does it to avoid being hypnotized, then it goes for a Lick attack, causing Noctowl to fall to the ground.

"Noctowl! Return!" I recall Noctowl and I decided to go with Pikachu, who is itching for a battle.

"Interesting." Morty says. I have Pikachu use Quick Attack, which knocks Gastly backward. Gastly lies on the ground for a moment before recovering itself.

"You raise your Pikachu very well, Ash. But my Gastly has been raised well, too." Morty says.

I have Pikachu use Thunderbolt, but Gastly dodges and counters with Night Shade, and Pikachu is already down.

"I sometimes hate the moves that deal damage equal to the levels..." I mutter before bringing Pikachu to Lillie. "Umbreon! I choose you!"

Umbreon goes for Dark Pulse, and it knocks Gastly backward. Gastly lies on the ground for a moment before recovering itself. Umbreon goes for the Pursuit, eventually knocking out the Pokemon.

"We did it, Umbreon!" I say. "The score now is one on one..."

"I choose you! Misdreavus!" Morty's next Pokemon is a Misdreavus. It goes for Confuse Ray to make Umbreon confused, and it knocks the Pokemon out with the Power Gem. I decide to go with Houndoom this time.

Houndoom starts things off with a Flamethrower attack, which Misdreavus dodges, countering with Hex. Houndoom also dodges the Hex attack and goes for Beat Up, finally knocking out Misdreavus in the end.

The third Pokemon is a Haunter, Houndoom tries to hit it with Fire Fang, but Haunter disappears and then uses Mean Look, which forces me to use Houndoom until the end of the round.

"But isn't that unfair since trainers can substitute Pokemon?" Kris asks.

"Mean Look is a Pokemon move, so it is actually fair." Irena replies. "It is part of my Dad's strategy."

"This isn't going to stop me! Use Foul Play" I say. "Use Foul Play!" The attack damages Haunter. Haunter uses Hypnosis, which nearly works; but Houndoom counters with another Beat up, but the Night Shade causes the Pokemon to faint in the end.

"This looks bad." Reisa says.

"I know Haunter will be tough to beat, but this tough... Ash doesn't have much choice now." East says.

"He has to go with Noctowl..." Lillie frowns.

"This isn't over yet. Noctowl! I choose you!" I say while sending out my final Pokemon.

"If you lose this, you'll lose. Do you think you can beat me with a Noctowl that has already taken some damage?" Morty asks.

"We don't know until we try." I say.

"You are confident, but you have to show more if you want to beat my Haunter." Morty says.

Noctowl uses Foresight to keep Haunter from disappearing. Noctowl follows this with a Tackle attack, but Haunter forces Noctowl to dodge its hands to avoid being grabbed instead. Haunter then tries its Lick attack, which Noctowl dodges. The two Pokémon then each use Hypnosis and Confuse Ray, which become locked against each other; but Noctowl's Hypnosis loses the struggle and gets blown away, allowing Confuse Ray to hit Noctowl.

"Noctowl! Are you okay?" I ask, and I notice that the Noctowl is confused.

"Ash, are you ready to give up yet?" Morty asks, but thank goodness that Noctowl can keep going.

Haunter then uses Night Shade, but the confused Noctowl still Tackles through the attack. The two collide and Noctowl is not confused anymore.

"Good, now finish it with Confusion!" After the attack hits, Haunter is down. Morty says, "No, it's not over yet-not yet! I still believe we can do it! I choose you, Gengar!"

Morty finally sends out Gengar. Noctowl uses Confusion while Gengar tries a Shadow Ball; the Confusion attack hits the Shadow Ball, making it explode, showering everyone with dark energy.

"That power! Gastly and Haunter are strong, too, but Gengar is on another level!" Ethan says.

Gengar disappears and begins to attack Noctowl with Night Shade. While Noctowl manages to evade the attacks, its attempts to use Foresight fail.

Kris says, "Wow...Gengar can attack while it is invisible..."

"Ash has to stop Gengar or else he's going to lose." East says.

"But what can he do?" Reisa asks.

I smile, "I know how to counter this. Noctowl! Send Confusion to the whole building!"

The attack causes the Gengar to be revealed, and Noctowl can use Foresight on it. Morty says, "We've got more discipline than anyone else! Gengar! Shadow Ball!"

Gengar attempts to use Shadow Ball again, but Noctowl stops it with a Tackle attack. After hitting the ceiling and falling to the floor, Gengar is now unable to battle, giving Ash the victory.

"We did it, Noctowl!" I cheer with the Pokemon.

"How is this possible..." Morty mutters. "I don't think our potentials are so different. But you seem to have something more than that...So be it. This Badge is yours."

Morty gives me the Fog Badge, and I'm happy to accept it.

By having the Fog Badge, Pokémon up to Lv. 50, including traded Pokémon, will obey you. Also, Pokémon will be able to use Surf."

Ethan then battles Morty and he barely wins the match, especially since he manages to use Aipom's Fling in the end. After giving him the badge, Morty says, "I get it... The people the Kimono Girls were talking about must be you guys... Never mind. You should be strong enough to go across the sea."

Irena says, "When you go west and then south, you'll reach Olivine City. My Mom will probably wait for you there for the gym battle."

"You bet, but first, we have a Contest to attend." I say. Then we bid farewell to Morty, Irena, and the children who watches our battles and prepare for the Contests.
