Chapter 34

Dustin smiled lightly as he approached the restaurant with Suzie. They had arranged to meet Lucas and Max there for a double date. It had been Max's idea, when finalising ideas for her and Lucas' date to invite Suzie and Dustin along too and make it a double date.

"Here we are." Suzie remarked; squeezing Dustin's hand. "You ready?"

He grinned and nodded. "Yeah, think Max and Lucas are here yet?"

Suzie shook her head. "Probably not; but hey, we can wait."

Dustin agreed and they began to head inside. Truth be told, while heading out for this double date at a restaurant, it wasn't exactly a formal affair. As such they were all dressed casually Dustin for instance was clad simply in dark blue pants, a grey T-shirt, dark grey ankle socks and blue tennis shoes. Meanwhile Suzie wore white denim shorts, a dark red wide-necked shirt and black shoes. Entering the restaurant they approached the host who looked up and smiled.

"Welcome, can I help you?"

Dustin smiled and spoke. "We booked a table, party of four, the others haven't arrived yet."

"Yeah, Dustin Henderson and Suzie Bingham. We're still waiting on Max Mayfield and Lucas Sinclair." Suzie explained.

The host nodded. "Ah yes, of course. Come, you can sit and wait, drinks?"

They nodded and followed the host to the table before sitting down. Once sat down they ordered their drinks and waited patiently, when they arrived they both took a sip.

They were sitting and chatting for only a short while before Max and Lucas arrived. Dustin didn't spot them right away, but Suzie did and spoke.

"Hey guys."

Dustin turned and smiled, greeting them. They, like the first couple, had dressed casually. Lucas was wearing brown cargo shorts, a black T-shirt and black shoes. Max by his side, the two of them holding hands, she wore simple jeans, a white T-shirt with an unbuttoned blue flannel shirt, she also wore black sneakers.

"Hey." Dustin greeted.

They both smiled as they reached the table.

"Hi, good to see you guys." Lucas said.

Max nodded. "Yeah, good to see you, I've been looking forward to this."

Dustin shared a look with Suzie. "Us too."

All smirking and laughing they all sat down, Max and Lucas's drinks arrived. Dustin shared another look with Suzie; they smiled at the closeness they had, as well as what Max and Lucas had developed in their relationship. They both smirked at how Mac and Lucas' shoulders were currently brushing as they sat quietly. Then again, they were doing the same thing, clearly trying to think of something to say. Despite everything, despite how long they had been together, they still had difficulties, especially due to all the recent happenings.

Max and Lucas were both smiling, holding hands under the table, waiting for the food to arrive. Dustin and Suzie sat opposite them, also smiling. It was awkward however, trying to think what to say.

It was obvious that they were still trying to deal with the fallout of the Grand Central Incident.

"So, how are you guys?" Suzie asked finally.

Lucas realized right away they were trying to talk about 'safe' things. To try and quell the fear that might still remain.

Lucas hesitated. "We're..."

But Max replied, confidently, getting to the heart of the matter. "Good. Listen guys, we've got to move past this, it'll work out. The threat from the Demons is ended, Mr. Negative is gone and Joyce is in charge of F.E.A.S.T. so we have a chance for things to calm down at last."

"We just..." Dustin began but then sighed. "You know what, you guys are right"

Lucas shared a look with Max and they smiled.

"Yeah." He said with a soft sigh. "Well, things are getting better."

Max sighed and shrugged, deciding she might as well get it out into the open. The thing that was still causing trouble for her and her family.

"Listen you guys, it's...it's kinda worrying at home right now." She admitted. "Billy's been missing for days and, well...it's causing problems."

Lucas sighed but nodded, Dustin and Suzie both grimaced.

"That sucks." Dustin commented.

Suzie reached out a hand to Max, comforting her as best she could, her other hand clearly intertwined with Dustin's.

"I couldn't imagine going through what you guys are going through." She said gently.

Max nodded slowly. "Thanks, but we'll manage, we'll find him, I'm sure."

She just hoped that she was right, if only to make the arguing and fighting stop for a while. But with Neil she didn't think that was possible.

Lucas sighed, wishing Max didn't have to worry about things like this. He tried to encourage her.

"He'll turn up, you're right about that. I'm sure of it." He told her.

Max smiled at Lucas softly. "Thanks,"

Smiling wider they moved a little closer. Dustin and Suzie were also smiling. Their food arrived at that moment and so they began to eat.

As they did so, Max asked. "Enough about us, how are you guys, how was meeting the parents and shit?"

"Terrible at first." Suzie admitted.

"Yeah, all interrogations and such." Dustin explained. "It was bad first impressions all around."

We shared a look at that and Max snorted.

"Tell me about it, know how that feels." She explained. "But then, my family is not exactly a shining example of good family."

Lucas shifted in my seat awkwardly. "Well, for what it's worth, my family loves you."

Max grinned. "Yeah, I know...I'm glad for that."

They all lapsed into a relaxed silence after that, enjoying their meal. Each of them quite comfortable with the date, but they were currently unaware of how to broach a new topic. But right now, they weren't really worried about that. They were still quite happy, enjoying the peaceful moment.
