Nami's hand still stung. But it served Sanji right that she put all her strength, energy and anger into her slap. Luffy still hadn't gotten up. Shouting at Sanji must've sapped the rest of his strength. He still looked like he was struggling to breathe, but knowing Luffy, he was just catching his breath. He'd gotten beaten up many times before but getting beaten up by a crewmember just… hit differently, to forgive the pun. Even when Usopp and Robin first left, they might not have felt as personal, even though they both came back.
Without thinking, she gently brushed Luffy's cheek, first with the back of her hand, then the tips of her fingers. He clenched his already-closed eyelids and groaned from the pain. She drew her hand back and wrapped her arms around her legs, which had been brought up to her chest.
"Luffy," she said, "Are you really going to wait here? We're in the middle of enemy territory."
"I'm waiting," he replied.
Of course. Luffy might be older, kinda wiser and handso—but that stubborn streak will never change.
"Sanji will come! I'm waiting here!" he said.
Looking up, Nami's heart dropped. Clouds and thunder rolled in.
"Oh, no! Big Mom's angry!" said Kingbaum, his voice and body shaking.
"No way… you must be joking!" Nami gasped. "That's all from one person's powers!?"
"Linlin can control the weather!" Kingbaum added. "There's like, no way to stop her when she's mad!"
Inevitably, rain began to fall. First it was a few drops, but as is the case, the drops increased. But as the drops hit her, the sticky, syrupy-feeling drops led her to the obvious realization: "That's syrup," she remarked.
The sound of someone flopping in the water drew her back to Luffy. He'd flipped over onto his stomach. "I won't eat anything… that Sanji hasn't made!" he said.
It was hard to say that this wasn't rock bottom. Sabaody might be the closest, and this might just be recency bias. Luffy might tell her Ace's death was rock bottom.
As the syrup rain fell, she did the same, first to her knees, then onto her back. Again, she reached for him, stroking his cheek. He lifted his head to look at her. His stomach loudly growled, and his eyes and teeth clenched. It was a horrible expression on his handsome face. Her idiot, sunshine, handsome, cute captain's bruises and half-shut eyes made her chest tighten. He had to smile again, or he might never smile again. But what could she do? She couldn't think of a joke right now, the situation was just too dire. Then her eyes went to his lips. Was it inappropriate that she wanted to kiss him now?
She didn't know exactly when her feelings for him turned into love. It may have started when he gave her his hat to keep while he kicked Arlong's ass, slowly burning like a tall candle. She wasn't even sure it was that kind of love. She would look at him as if he was the sun in the sky, or a tall class of water on the hottest day of the year. As much as she wanted to deny it, to push it onto the backburner until they found the One Piece, he'd become King of the Pirates and she'd mapped out the entire world, she wanted to pull him into her arms and tell him everything was okay.
But she was startled when he got up on his hands and knees, crawling over to her and sticking his face into hers. "Hey, are you okay?"
"Don't scare me like that, you idiot!" she shouted before calming herself down. Ugh. She'd gone back into awful habits. Maybe she was the idiot. "Sorry. I can ask you the same question."
"I'm hungryyyyy," he moaned. "When we get Sanji back, I'm gonna make him cook a lot of food and then I'm gonna—"
"Stop, you'll lose your strength," she said. As she looked up at him, she remembered when Sanji left, and how powerless she was to stop him. At first, she thought the rain was getting into her eyes, but it didn't feel like syrup. Not syrup-y enough. "Luffy… I'm so sorry."
"Sorry about what?" he asked.
"For letting Sanji leave," she replied.
"Whaddaya mean?"
"… Never mind."
Carefully, Nami lifted her left arm to cup Luffy's head. Instinctively, he grabbed her wrist. Gently, she stroked Luffy's cheek, careful not to aggravate the bruises. She pulled it downward until their lips connected. She heard Luffy make a small sound in the back of his throat. For all she knew, this could have been his first real kiss. She didn't know why she did it, she wasn't thinking clearly, but it felt too good to stop now, not even wondering how the rest of the crew would react. Well, she knew how Sanji would react, and she didn't care about that. The moment was all that mattered. Hey, if kissing him could make him feel a little better…
Luffy literally couldn't describe how he felt, because he was so unused to it. Becoming King of the Pirates had been his single-minded goal. His eyes, still open, stared at Nami. She was crying. Tears flowed from her eyes, which would be hard to see from a distance because it was mixing with the rain. He'd seen Shanks and Makino pushing their mouths and swapping spit before, never seeing what the big deal was about it. Looked icky. He didn't think it could feel so good. Maybe it was because Nami made him feel really special and weird.
He lowered himself to the ground, allowing her to loosen her grip on his head and she could stroke the side of his head. He kept his eyes open for a few more moments, finally letting them close and losing himself in the moment. More surprises came when she slipped her tongue between his lips, making him gasp in his throat, but her moaning in the back of her throat made him feel kinda funny.
The low rumble of Big Mom's approaching forces brought things back to the real world. Luffy lifted himself onto his feet, swaying. Nami was there, helping her captain stand. Instinctively, he wrapped his left arm around her waist. She let him hold her for protection. But whatever just happened could not be disclosed with the rest of the crew until the end of the journey. Together, they watched their doom approach. Thunder bellowed and the syrup rain intensified.
