PROLOGUE
The first thing that woke Haruno Sakura up was an indescribable pain that shot from her thigh and up to her chest. It was like nothing she had ever experienced in her life– like her whole body had been torn apart and then hastily stitched back together. As if heavy weights had been attached to every muscle. She groaned, rolling to a side, her voice coming out in a soft whimper.
Voices reached her ears, faint and fragmented at first, like a distant whisper. Slowly, the voice formed into words and she strained her ears to listen.
"I think she's awake," a deep voice remarked. Her eyes remained shut, and when she attempted to speak, her throat protested, leaving her voice raw.
She forced one eye open. And then the other. At first, all she could see was total darkness. But as she struggled against the dim, murky surroundings, she could make out four looming silhouettes hidden in the shadows. They were watching her, assessing her like she was something foreign to them.
Suddenly, one of the shadows darted forward, moving at a speed that defied normalcy, and appeared in front of her.
She hadn't even seen him move.
The man or boy—seemingly young, given his height and stature—knelt before her and assisted her into a seated position. As he drew nearer, his features came into view: blue eyes and blonde hair. He leaned closer, his voice laced with genuine concern as he asked. "Are you okay?"
The man or boy–cause he looked so young for his height and stature, crouched on his knee and helped her sit up. Blue eyes and blonde hair emerged as he leaned closer to her face. ''Are you okay?'' He asked, his voice tinted with genuine concern.
Sakura wondered if he was a friend.
''I..'' She attempted to speak but her voice sounded foreign to her. Unconsciously, she reached for her neck and withdrew her hand. It was like her body was lagging and slowly becoming aware that it had other parts as well. She managed a feeble nod, ''I think so.''
A smile graced the blonde boy's face. "Good."
''Jeez, why don't we just kill her?'' The sudden remark from her right made Sakura jump. Beside her was another youthful-looking boy, with short brown hair and red markings on his face. He grinned broadly, revealing sharp canines. Sakura recoiled, a new sensation—reminiscent of fear—rippling through her. ''She could be a spy or something.''
"We can't do that," the blonde one objected, a hint of protest in his eyes.
The other two shadows emerged from the darkness, their features slowly coming into focus. One had long, brown hair tied in a ponytail and eyes so pale they resembled silver pearls. He regarded her with a thoughtful gaze before speaking. "What do we do with her then?"
The last figure, tall and brooding, exuding an aura of authority, crouched down beside the blonde. Up close, Sakura observed the bluish-purple undertones in his dark hair. He leaned in closer, his hands resting on the ground on either side of her, effectively trapping her in place. Instead of feeling cautious or worried about their proximity, she inexplicably felt a sense of calm. As if she'd known them her whole life.
The dark-haired eyed her. He was undeniably handsome, she noted. The other three were attractive, but his allure was distinct. Merely looking at him left her feeling slightly intoxicated.
"What's your name?" he inquired, his deep, dark voice resonating deep within her.
"I don't know..." Sakura began, then hesitated as if recalling something. "Sakura."
He nodded and pulled away from her. The four of them gathered, engaging in a hushed debate. She overheard the brown-haired boy with red markings complain about how the others were going to regret it, and she bit down on her lips. If they didn't want her, maybe they could simply let her go.
However, she had a feeling that they wouldn't. Something about them felt inherently unusual and dangerous.
Finally, they concluded their discussion, and the blonde one turned toward her, his blue eyes glinting. "My name is Naruto," he introduced, gesturing to the others. "This is Kiba, Neji, and Sasuke."
Sakura nodded.
"We'll be taking you with us," Naruto declared firmly. "Do you trust us?"
Trust them?
She didn't even know who they were and where she was. But as the darkness pressed in on her, she had no choice but to nod weakly, putting her life in the hands of these mysterious strangers.
