The Spring Snow Incident: Moriya Side

Gensokyo, the land of illusions and fantasy.

It has been one year since the conclusion of the Scarlet Mist Incident by the Moriya goddesses and wind priestess, during this period it was peaceful, there were no major incidents happening and the youkai weren't causing much trouble.

However, during this time, Sanae was training diligently.

She realized just how inexperienced she was during the previous incident and decided to train hard, so she wouldn't have to rely all the time on her goddesses.

She was helped during this training by Suwako, Kanako and residents from the Scarlet Devil Mansion.

After training for so long, she finally was confident in her abilities. She was no master by any means, but at least she didn't feel helpless anymore.

Moriya Shrine, Afternoon.

-And please be careful on your way home!

Sanae smiled and waved to the family, the children waved back to her.

She finished giving blessings to the visitors for today, this family being the last one.

As soon as they disappeared from the sight, the wind priestess frowned.

She looked at the sky, from where it was snowing.

Normally it wouldn't be anything weird for it to be snowing, however, it was the middle of the spring. That was the abnormal part.

Since the start of the spring, it was snowing all the time...

It was like the winter has never ended. This was surely another incident. It was time for her to act. She felt both excited and troubled. Excited because she could finally test her newly learned skills in another incident. Troubled because she didn't know who would be the perpetrator this time. She only hoped that it wouldn't be anyone with terrifying power.

She quickly hurried inside the shrine.

Inside the shrine, there was Suwako and Kanako sitting at the kotatsu. The earth goddess was taking a nap there, while the wind goddess was reading a book quietly.

Kanako noticed Sanae entering, she closed her book and faced her.

-Good work, Sanae. Is something wrong? You seem in a hurry.

The wind priestess paused and looked at the wind goddess.

-I have finished giving blessings for today, but I'll be leaving in a bit.

Kanako raised her eyebrow.

-Leaving? Where exactly?

Sanae pointed outside.

-To take care of this incident, this winter has been lasting for far too long. There has to be somebody, stopping spring from arriving.

The wind goddess clutched her chin in thought.

-I have no objections. The Hakurei shrine maiden is obviously not interested in resolving this incident, and I have warned her that we will take care of them ourselves if she will dally for too long.

She then got up and walked towards the wind priestess, then put a hand on her shoulder.

-I know that I have been mentioning this a lot, but remember to not push yourself too hard. You can always rely on us, Sanae.

The wind priestess hugged Kanako.

-I won't, Lady Kanako. If I'll be in any danger, I'll be sure to let you know.

The wind goddess smiled and patted Sanae on the head.

-Good girl. Now don't forget to wear something warm, it's really cold these days.

The wind priestess nodded and released the wind goddess from the hug.

She headed into her room to prepare for the trip.

As soon as Sanae disappeared from the sight, Kanako went back to the kotatsu.

-Ah, our little Sanae is growing up already...

She said to herself and returned to reading.

Moriya Shrine, a bit later.

Sanae was standing outside the shrine, she changed into her winter clothes and prepared a satchel with food, water and other things for her trip.

She was ready to go out. Well, she would be, if she would know where to start exactly.

The wind priestess rushed outside the shrine without even thinking over her plan of action, to her embarrassment.

She was about to head back inside to consult her goddess again, when suddenly she heard a voice.

-Newspaper delivery from yours truly, Aya Shameimaru!

Sanae looked behind her.

She saw a woman floating in the air, she was carrying a stack of newspaper.

She had red eyes and semi-long black hair. She was wearing a white blouse, black short skirt, and a tokin. Furthermore, she had a black scarf and stockings.

Oh right, she could ask tengu if they had a clue or two about the incident!

-Can I ask you something, Aya?

The crow tengu was surprised at the sudden request, but she nodded.

-Well, as long as you keep it short, I don't mind. I still have a lot of places to visit today for my delivery.

Sanae nodded.

-Oh, don't worry, I won't take long. I was wondering if you heard anything about this incident?

Aya hummed in thought.

-Weeell, I know one thing, but you know that this kind of information doesn't come for free! I will be willing to spill the beans in return for any juicy stories you might have.

Of course, it wouldn't be that easy. She thought about anything interesting that she could tell the crow tengu.

-I actually have something interesting! Did you know that the Hakurei shrine maiden attacks anybody that tries to touch her donation box?

Aya grabbed a notebook and pen from her skirt pocket.

-Oh really? That's a new one for me! I can already see the headlines, "Violent shrine maiden snaps at innocent people because of money!"

Sanae scratched the back of her head.

-I think that's going a bit overboard... But oh well, I guess she deserves it for ignoring this incident.

The crow tengu scribbled everything into her notebook, then faced the wind priestess again.

-A deal is a deal. I'll tell you what I know. According to some of my sources, a barrier near Netherworld became unstable. It seems that it's really easy to enter there than previously.

Netherworld? Sanae was never been there before, but she heard that it was pretty close to Mayohiga.

She didn't get much info about the incident, but at least she knew where to start now.

-Thanks a lot, Aya.

The crow tengu winked.

-Don't mention it! As long as you got interesting scoop to share, then this journalist has something to offer back.

Sanae nodded, then flied up and headed towards Mayohiga.
