Chakal grabbed Maria and raised her into the air, leveled with his face. He jumped onto the church wall, grabbing onto a ledge with his free hand. He climbed up a little bit before stopping. He held Maria out over the floor. "Give me the medal or your woman gets it!" he said. He continued climbing. "Men! Typical!" Maria said, struggling to get free.
"Maria!" Joaquin called. Manolo pulled Joaquin down behind a chunk of rubble. "Get the medal."
"What?" Joaquin asked.
"Get the medal. I can handle this," Manolo said.
Joaquin nodded, then jumped out from behind the rock. "JOAQUINNN!" he cried again.
Jorge traveled on pigs' backs to a small tombstone. He stood on top, singing. He swung his sword arm in a few circles while singing. He then continued to sing after. He stomped his foot, causing the banditos' mustaches to fall off, along with their sombreros. The slowly clapped. Jorge bowed and walked away.
"Wow, he's good," Donald said.
"Maybe that's where Manolo get's it from," Sora suggested.
"Have you seen the medal?" Joaquin asked Sora, out of breath.
"What medal?" Sora checked.
"In the shape of a heart, green, with a skull on it and this weird glow?"
"Um..." Sora thought for a second. "No."
"If you find it, I need it," Joaquin said, running off, throwing a few banditos and Heartless out of the way.
Manolo's hand slipped from the church wall. "Where are you going, Little Sanchez?" Carmelo asked, grabbing Manolo's suit.
"I need to get up there!" Manolo replied.
"You go, Little Sanchez!" Carmelo exclaimed, throwing Manolo to the next window. Jorge caught Manolo with his sword. "Whatever happens up there, don't stop singing, Manolo!" Jorge said. Manolo smiled at him before he was thrown to the next window. He overshot the window and went a little higher, but not high enough. He started falling back down.
Carlos' hand emerged from the window and caught his son. "Epa! Where do you think you're going?" he asked.
"I need to get up there, Papa!" Manolo answered. Carlos pulled him in closer, holding him with both hands. "I was wrong, mijo. You turned out to be the greatest Sanchez ever!" Carlos threw Manolo to the roof.
Manolo punched Chakal over, knocking Maria out of his huge hand. Manolo caught her.
"Manolo!" she exclaimed.
"M'lady!" Manolo replied. "Want to dance, senorita?"
"I thought you'd never ask," Maria said.
Manolo danced with Maria, twirling her, while she kicked Chakal. However, one of Chakal's bombs got lit and it fell. The Sanchez family tried, and failed, at catching it, exploding once it hit the ground.
The church's foundation shook, and the steeple cracked and broke off. It began falling, with Maria, and Manolo on it.
"Save yourself, sisters," Joaquin said, ushering some nuns away from the steeple. "Donald!" Sora called. "We have to save Goofy!"
Donald looked to see the steeple began gaining speed above Goofy. "Coming!" Donald replied, waddling as fast as his legs could take him. Sora and Donald each grabbed an arm and pulled him away from the church building. After a bit of struggle, they gently laid him near a tombstone.
"He has bombs!" Joaquin warned. Joaquin squinted at a glimmer of green light on the floor. "Ah-hah! There you are." He picked it up off the ground.
Manolo threw Maria off of the steeple. The Sanchez family stacked, Carmelo at the top. Maria landed on Carmelo's shoulders. "Hi, Maria!" they al greeted in unison.
"Manolo! Look out!" Sora called. Manolo ducked under Chakal's hand. He ran up Chakal's back and jumped off. Carmelo caught him too. "Welcome back, Little Sanchez!"
"This isn't over yet!" Manolo replied. Luis punched a bandito and Heartless with his mustache. "Here he comes."
The steeple fell, spreading dust around the area. Sora coughed. "You okay, Sora?" Goofy asked behind him.
"Goofy!" Sora cheered.
"Goofy!" Donald exclaimed, running towards the two of them. The group hugged.
Chakal moved his arm, only to find it stuck under a pile of debris. He growled as he examined the town. He used his hand to light all of the bombs at once. They are sparked. "I'm bringing this whole town with me," he said.
Joaquin and Manolo ran to Chakal to keep him still. Joaquin grabbed Chakal's arm and wrapped it around his body. Chakal fought to get them off, then gave up, as the bombs' fuses are half gone.
"What are you two doing?" Sora cried.
"Protecting San Angel," Manolo said.
"We need to get this bell down," Joaquin said.
Sora looked up at the bell, resting on a chunk of debris next to Manolo, then back down at the two friends. "What? You can't! That's suicide!"
"Joaquin," Manolo said quieter. "Protect San Angel. Protect Maria."
"What?" Joaquin asked.
Manolo pushed Joaquin out from under the bell. He kicked at the debris next to him twice before turning to Joaquin. "Adios, amigo," Manolo said.
"Manolo!" Sora, Maria and Joaquin cried. Goofy covered Sora with his broken shield.
The bombs exploded, causing a large resonating gong inside the bell and a bunch of black smoke. "Manolo!" Maria cried. "Manolo..." she covered her mouth.
"Sora? Are you okay?" Donald asked.
Sora opened his eyes to see Donald and Goofy leaning over him. "Ugh," he sat up. "Ouch!" He grabbed his arm. "Hang on, Sora. I got ya." Goofy pulled a small cloth of out his jacket pocket and tied it around Sora's arm. "Are you okay, Sora?" Donald asked.
"I'll...I'll be fine." He rubbed his head, his attention going to the bell. "What about Manolo?" Sora asked, standing. He stumbled. Goofy helped him stand.
The bell fell over, black smoke rising from the inside of it. A silhouette moved inside. "What is that?" Sora asked, squinting at it.
The figure inside stumbled for a second before regaining balance. The smoke cleared to reveal Manolo.
"Manolo?" Sora asked.
Maria smiled, then paused. "Manolo?" she checked.
Manolo looked at his hands, then smiled at Maria. "It's me." Maria ran to him and hugged him. "But how did you-?"
Everyone looked at Candlemaker, Xibalba and La Muerte. "Don't look at us," La Muerte replied, just as confused.
"Then how did-?" Sora asked. Maria held her hand behind Manolo's back. She paused as her expression changed to shock. "Manolo!" she exclaimed, pulling out the Medal of Everlasting Life from Manolo's back.
Manolo gasped. "Joaquin!" Manolo ran to Joaquin, who is just now rising, tying a piece of cloth around his left eye. Joaquin stumbled but regained balance. "You saved my life."
"You sacrificed yourself to save Manolo," Sora said, Goofy helping him walk.
"I figured, now is the right time to be a real hero," Joaquin said, smiling.
"Thank you, Joaquin," Manolo said. He handed Joaquin the medal.
Joaquin twirled it around in his fingers. "At first, I thought being a hero was being courageous, showing no weakness." He tossed it back at Xibalba. La Muerte turned her head away from him and huffed. "But now I know that being a hero is putting others before yourself."
"Get in here," Maria smiled, pulling Manolo and Joaquin down into a hug.
