Peter and Dr. Oxtonstep to the main floor. With a head turn, the doctor spots Faye Lau talking with the rest of the agents. Peter can hear Faye finishing up her briefing with Shane. She nearly falls forward, forcing Shane to catch her. The JTF soldier picks her up and has her lean against him before taking her to a spot nearby the JTF barracks. Dr. Oxton shakes his head and sighs with pitiful remorse.
"That explosion has messed her up, especially the eye and leg." He notes quietly. "I wouldn't be in the field if I were her."
"Yeah." Peter sighs. "You think she's up for a chat?"
"Likely. Come on."
Shane nods to the doctor as he passes by and excusing himself for some shuteye in their bedroom. Then, Peter and the doctor head over to Faye as she sits at her post. She glances up.
"Oh, there you are Oxton." She greets. "I was about to tell Shane to pass the news. I can't do much on the field, not with my leg like this."
"Well, that's a shame." Oxton sits down. "If you don't mind. There's something I need to report."
Agent Lau finally looks up and notice Oxton had a friend behind him. She raises an eyebrow after glancing the young man standing behind.
"Who is he?" She asks.
"This is Peter Parker and what I'm about to tell you isn't to be shared with the JTF." He looks around to make sure no one is in earshot. Then he leans in and whispers. "This guy is Spider-man."
Faye grows surprised slowly and blinks a couple of times. "Is that a fact?"
Peter steps forward and unzips his backpack. Faye quickly spots the spider-man costume stuffed snugly inside. Peter zips it up as Faye is left a bit speechless.
"Well, thank you for telling me this, Oxton. It'll make our partnership run smoother." Faye's eyes flicker to Peter. "I'm glad you're working with us, Peter. We've got a lot of work cut out for us."
"I'll be happy to help." Peter replies. "What needs to be done?"
"We've got some people to reach out." Faye pulls out a clipboard and reads over a list. "First is getting Benítez back from the Lincoln Checkpoint. It'll boost the JTF's morale and this base's security."
"Alright, sounds like an easy decision. What else does she need?"
"We have someone covering a brilliant technician who is out there upgrading the base's utilities. We need him back as soon as we can if we want to have power for a long time. Finally, we have a virologist setting up shop in Madison Square garden. Recently, we haven't heard from her so we need you guys to check up on her and if we can bring her over to the medical wing. If we want to figure out this virus and have any chance for a vaccine, it's her."
"Oh… wow… this is a lot to choose from."
"Understood. We should talk it over with the others."
"Wait. One other thing." Faye sighs, with a bit of anxiety buried away. "I really wanted to be out there with you. I hope we can make a great team. The people are counting on us. So, let's not let them down. I'll be guiding you to your objectives on coms."
"Sounds good." John taps Peter's shoulder. "I'll be in that room talking strategy with the rest. I'll get you a seat at the table in a bit once I give them a story they'll believe, hopefully."
Peter nods. He waves to Faye before following John to join Freya and Shane sitting idly at a table in the JTF's security quarters. Peter's eyes catch Oliver talking to a JTF vendor stocking weapons. John folds his hands together and dives right into business.
"You guys got the word from Agent Lau?"
"Yep. We got to figure out how to take care of it." Shane finally notices Peter walking in. "Hey, who is this guy?"
"Quite observant, Shane. But I think I know him." Freya murmured. She sits up a bit and projects her voice. "Excuse me, can I talk to you for a moment? I've got a question."
Peter gulps quietly.
Oxton makes a signal to Peter to sit down. Freya smiles as the young man walks over and takes a seat at the table. She rubs her chin for a bit amount of time. Then, a lightbulb flickers in her head.
"You were that freelance photographer… Peter Parker, right?"
"Yep!" Peter eyes widened a little as he says it. So, she didn't forget about me after I left the Bugle to get away from JJ's nonsense. "Didn't mean to intrude. I just got here and couldn't help but notice you were here too. Glad you're ok."
"Same with you, Peter." Freya shakes his hand before getting back on track. "I was wondering if you are still in contact with Spider-man. We've got a situation and could use his help."
Now, it's a moment to play a bit oblivious. "Wait… It's true he's alive? I thought they were rumors."
"Nope! He came by and helped us get to Manhattan." Freya's smile slowly starts fading. "You are still in contact with him, right?"
"Yes! He's likely has it."
"I still don't get why we can just contact him through ISAC." Shane mutters.
John sits up and raises his voice by a little. "He's not an agent. He's just out there doing what he can against… whatever else is out there besides street gangs. He's didn't take an oath like we did to follow the directive and I'm sure he's most likely going to answer a call from one of his great friends."
"Oh, I gotcha." Shane sits up and rests his back on the chair. "Sorry, didn't mean to sound like the Spanish Inquisition."
Peter nods back then stares at the ISAC computer brick on Freya's shoulder. "It's kind of weird to see a reporter and doctor carrying guns."
"We're more than that." Shane pauses. "We are working with the JTF on the orders from the federal government to restore the city, taking back from… whatever is out there. The intel we have so far is limited."
"So… you guys are secret agents in other words."
"Aye." Shane nods.
John flickers a grin at Peter before adjusting his special medical face mask. Finally, Oliver steps away from the weapons vendor and returns to the table with an RPK-74. He slides a vertical grip on it before laughing quietly.
"The kid knows his firearms and gave what I need for this RPK-47. He calls it a thank you for helping them out with the hoodlums." Oliver sits down and notices Peter. He lets silence linger for a second or two. "I take it you're filling him in on what's going on. Why?"
"He knows Spider-man." John sighs, having to repeat himself the third time. "He's needs to be here so he can pass what we're doing to him."
"I take it me directing Spider-man is out of the question for now." Oliver coughs a little and moves on. "So, there's a medic to rescue in The Garden, Captain Benitez at the Lincoln Tunnel checkpoint, and a technician somewhere by a subway station."
"The one at the construction site?" John asks. Oliver returns a nod. "That's a mass burial site filled with dead bodies. It's a recipe for contamination without masks."
"I can ask the JTF for some. Maybe the gun vendor can give some to us for free." Shane pipes in
"Hope they're high quality." Oxton grumbles. "The last thing I need is for someone to get Green Poison."
"Alright!" Oliver puts his hands in the air to cut the chatter. "Let's decide on what we should do first. Who wants want to get the virologist out first?"
John, Freya's, and Shane's hands shoot up. Peter looks around and waves his. "Do I need to put a vote in?"
Oliver shakes his head. "John, I'm surprised you want her out so quick. Aren't you a doctor?"
"Oh, I'm certified that I can patch up bullet wounds, broken bones, and infections on the battlefield. However, she's particularly important for numerous reasons, like knowing how to find a vaccination in a virus we don't know much about." The doctor replied. "As soon we get her on base, then I'll be more likely to help on the field while she find a possible vaccination on the virus."
"Alright, I get your point." Oliver falls silent for a moment. "There's a chance I'll stay here to help the base function until Captain Benítez gets back. Would you be ok if you two head in with John to save Dr. Kendell?"
"Of course." Freya answers.
"Sure!" Shane replies.
"Excellent! I'll tackle the checkpoint with Shane once we get the virologist out of the garden if he's up for it. Then, we just take care of the technician for last."
Freya groans quietly. "Having some power and basic services would be great. Heard he left a kid named Miles to take over until he gets back."
Peter's eyes flicker down to the table. Oh! Miles is here too. I should probably see him when I get the chance.
"Sounds like a plan, Oliver." Shane stands up and pushes his chair in. "I'm going to head off to get some shuteye. I haven't slept in two days."
"Understood. I'm going to do the same." Oliver stands up. "Peter, let us know what you get from Spider-man."
"Will do. Good luck out there."
"Hey, have you seen the tech wing yet?" John asks as he joins with Peter out of the door. Peter shook his head. "Well, let's go up there together. I've got to log myself and ISAC in."
Everyone else left the table and head off in different directions. Peter slowly heads over to follow John upstairs into the tech wing. There's a small handful of JTF personal working on computers or improving the facilities utilities. John heads over to a computer to log in while Peter notices a familiar face listening to music as he works diligently on the computer. Peter waltzes over and taps Mile's shoulder.
"Jason, please tell me you got an update on Rhodes." Miles spun around. Then, he freezes to process his friend gasps. "Oh my god! When did you come back?"
"Surprised to see me?"
Miles stops what he was working on and greets with a firm and enthusiastic handshake. Peter returned with a grin. Peter then grabs a chair and sits down.
"I… thought I was crazy when I heard your name being said on base." Miles laughs a little. "When did you find yourself here?"
"Today, thanks to the JTF and Dr. Oxton." Peter says. "You seem busy up here."
"Oh yeah." Miles shakes his head. "Just another day of being in charge maintaining the base's limited utilities. We may resort to using candles in a couple of weeks if we don't find a better source of electricity."
"Don't worry, Miles." The doctor chimes in as he pulls up a chair to sit down. "You're a smart kid and you seem to be doing fine. The JTF will find a way to keep this place running."
"Thanks, Doctor Oxton." He snaps his head to the doctor. "It's good to see you again. Thanks for bringing Peter back."
"Oh, it's my pleasure. It's a good thing I found him. It's dangerous out there."
"Yeah, my dad said it's a warzone. You could stick around and help with the medical wing. We could use you again."
"I would love to, but I heard the JTF is sending a strike team to rescue medical staff from the Garden." The doctor adjusts his glasses. "So, it's true Spider-Man is back. It be great if he could swing by and help."
Miles and Peter glance at each other before the doctor breaks into a laugh. He stands up and pushes his chair in before turning to leave. "I'm heading to the medical wing to help MJ with the medical wing. We'll be heading out to launch our mission soon."
Peter clenches his fits a little before he continues his conversation with Miles. The kid coughed and scratched his head.
"Doctor Oxton seems… different." Miles mutters. "When did he get involved with the JTF and carry a rifle on his backpack?"
Peter gives Miles a quick summary that the doctor from FEAST is now an activated sleeper agent from a government department called the Division along with Oliver, Shane, and Freya. Miles couldn't say a word for a minute after Peter finishes. Then, he lets his thoughts out.
"Freya Springfield, the Daily Bugle international journalist, has been some sleeper cell agent with Officer Borkovic and his informant Shane?"
"Yep." Peter laughs a little. "It's a small world out there. I would love to stay and chat, but I think I need to inform want to know if Spider-man is coming."
"Wait?" Miles looks around before speaking his next words to Peter. "You haven't told them that you're Spider-man?"
Peter blinks a couple of times. Then he coughs and scratches his head. "I… don't know what you're talking about."
"Peter… it's ok. I know the story." Miles sighs. "MJ told me after you went missing for several weeks. Apparently, Dr. Oxton knew too. I haven't told anyone else."
"Right… thanks for that." Peter scratches his head. "I'm working with the agents and I cannot tell them who I am. Someone like Scorpion could be out there and torture them for information."
"OH, you have a lot of catching up to do. For starters, Doc Ock, Sandman, Scorpion, or any of those super villains you fight are still contained in The Raft. We are lucky there was only a breakout in Rikers."
"Wow… that's a bit of luck I needed. I know Electro is out there, probably hiding. Tombstone and Hammerhead are probably doing the same thing or have goons terrorizing the streets."
"So… who is looking after the Raft?" Peter asks.
"I'd love to explain about that." Miles waves him away. "But I think you got someone who wants you. Don't keep them waiting."
Peter snaps his head around. Freya gestures him to end the conversation before leaving him with Miles. Miles. Peter leaves Miles to get back with his project and follows Freya. She asks to his quietly.
"You made a call to Spidey, right?"
"Not yet. I was busy reuniting with old friends."
"Ah! I don't blame you. You're fine. I just need you to tell Spidey if he comes, it's just going to be me and Shane. Oxton can't make it because he assigned himself to the medical wing."
"Oh! Alright, I'll let him know about that."
"Thanks, Peter."
Suddenly, the base's PA system goes off. Peter and Freya stop walking as it makes an announcement.
"This is Private Aaron Richards. Two things. First, disregard what Corporal Cade told you. Our CO said he isn't authorized to be helping with the Garden operation. Get him back to base now or I'm getting the hammer. Also, Spider-man is back and is out there doing who knows what to make a difference. Don't listen to Just the Facts with Jonah Jameson. He and his friends literally saved our asses. Try 'Wouldn't Ya Know it' with Rick Valassi. It is so much better, and you'll feel better. That will be all."
"Classic Cade." Freya grumbles before heading to a vendor. "Get Shane up. We're heading out for the garden soon."
Peter nods and knocks on the door. A few minutes later, Shane opens the door and rubs his eye. He had his gear and weapons packed up. He notices Freya talking with the young friendly arms dealer and takes an assault rifle from him before trading in her shotgun.
"We about to head off, I take it." Shane yawns. "Where's the doctor?"
"He has been reassigned to the medical wing." Peter says. "You ready to go?"
"Yep. You talked to Spidey?"
"He'll be swinging by soon. Is it good I step out for some air?"
"Good idea." Shane walks out of the room with the young man. "I hate to be cooped in this base. Just don't wander too far."
"Understood."
Peter quietly moves outside and finds a quiet place to change out into his alter ego. Spider-man looks around before slipping his mask on and climbing onto the roof of the James Farley post office, now the proud JTF's base of operations. He looks down and spots Shane and Freya running out of the base.
He leaps up onto the top of Madison Square and climbs alongside the side of the building. He can see rioters wandering around many places from the stadium. They're packing a lot of weapons and gear. A lot of hoodlums to handle. Time to give the agents a heads up.
"I'm here." Spidey announces. "You guys coming?"
"We're here." Shane replies. "Meet us at the east entrance."
"You're going to love who I just found." Freya chimes in.
"Dropping down. Heads up." Spider drops from the wall down to a group of JTF soldiers and the two agents.
A/N: Okay, I have some explaining to do. There's a couple of reasons why this was slow. I was overwhelmed with figuring out how to build a world that was more complex that what I anticipated. Plus, I'm still deciding what's going to ultimately happen in the story. I'm also concerned if I'm handling the marvel characters well. I do have a goal of what I want to do, it's just getting there.
Second, I need to come clean on something. I feel uninterested on doing things I enjoy for little reason. Deep down, I want nothing more than put a story I'm in love with out there. But I also feel the question of what's the point of it all popping too many times.
That's what I need to address. Hoping I can figure out what to do before I get overwhelmed.
