The Coronation of Higurashi Kagome
Her eyes took in the waning moon.
There was but one week until Ren and Yoh's shaman fight.
The day was coming fast and it still didn't feel real.
Even with hundreds of pieces of the Great Spirit within her, Kagome couldn't fathom the nature of the entity.
She couldn't even pretend to understand its thought process.
It was fate, but also the will of the Great Spirit that determined the matchups for these fights.
So why was it decided that two of her closest friends had to fight and eliminate each other's dreams?
Kagome's head turned from her frost-laced window to her closet. Inside, a familiar white garment was nestled between her plethora of hanging coats and dresses. She pushed herself away from her chair and sauntered to the storage space. She pulled on the fabric and her eyes softened, 'Back then, none of us knew this belonged to Hao… I wonder…' She continued staring at the cloak, 'If he'll come to meet me soon. He does always seem to know when I need him.'
Before she could ponder any further, the familiar chime of the ringtone assigned to her mother filled the silence. Without any delay, Kagome padded to the nightstand where her phone was charging. She picked up the device and held it to her face, "Hi, Mama."
"Kagome," Higurashi-san's warm voice greeted back. "Sorry for calling so late. I didn't wake you, did I?"
Kagome shook her head, "Mm mm. Don't worry about it." She then switched gears, "Did something happen?"
"Not yet," Her mother responded. "I was so busy with errands earlier that I forgot to check the mail till just now. And when I did, I actually found a formal invitation from the Imperial Family to ours."
"Eh?!" The daughter's eyes doubled, "The Imperial Family?! What exactly did we get invited to?!"
"That's the thing," Higurashi-san replied, "It was an invitation to an exclusive ceremony in your honor, Kagome." The daughter's cell didn't detect her soft gasp from the other end. "The ceremony is officially dubbed The Coronation of Higurashi Kagome."
S.H.A.M.A.N.K.I.N.G.
Kaede stared down at the heads bowed before her.
One sported a bob of brunette hair while the other's crown was draped with flowing dark tresses.
"Momiji…" the head priestess spoke.
"Yes," the brunette responded.
The elder addressed the other, "Botan."
"Yes," she acknowledged.
The twins remained knelt before their grandmother, listening intently as she spoke, "As you know, there's been a series of mass disappearances across the world for weeks now." They chorused softs "Un"s in response. "Divinations have predicted the next target of the dark force responsible for these tragedies. You two have been chosen to take part in an expedition to eradicate the evil. It is imperative that you succeed."
The orange glow of the candlelight was blotched with another shadow as Kaede's husband emerged from the shadows. With his arms folded behind his back, he instructed, "It is of the utmost importance that you two succeed in this mission and bring great honor to the Higurashi name."
The twins lifted their heads in unison. They exchanged looks with each other, then directed identical deadpanned expressions to their grandfather, "Grandpa, you're trying way too hard to be cool."
The priest sobbed as he cried, "Why do you only give respect to your grandmother?!"
Kaede cleared her throat then concluded, "The expedition departs in three days. You'll have time to attend Kagome's ceremony before then."
The twins blinked, both looking surprised, "Kagome's…ceremony…?"

Kagome shrunk beneath the stares of her friends. The Tao's and Usui's crowded her, each giving her their own version of a side-eye as they stood in front of Higurashi shrine's grand staircase. The priestess' hands rose as she sweatdropped and smiled, "Sorry, guys. It's really sudden and it looks like I don't have any control over the guest list."
"I still wish I could come and support you!" Pirika chimed with a small pout.
Sango placed a hand on the blunette's shoulder, "I'm sure all of us want to attend Kagome-chan's ceremony but we weren't invited and we should accept that instead of making her feel bad about it." Her violet eyes moved from the Usui's over to her sulking cousins. Jun merely clacked open her fan and hid her scowl.
"Hmph, I just find it hard to believe that we Tao's weren't invited, considering our relationship," She remarked with controlled indignance.
"Tsk, what's done is done," Ren finally spoke up. Before Kagome could smile and thank him, he accosted her the cheek and asserted, "But don't let it happen again."
"Ow!" With a slap to his hand, Kagome glared at the Tao, "Jeez, it's not like it's my fault!" She then sighed and smiled, "But I'll see what I can do."
HoroHoro pushed his way between Kagome and Ren, making the latter glare holes in the back of his head. "Alright, Kagome-chan! Make sure to take lots of pictures for Renny here to ogle and drool over!" The Usui then cackled as a red-cheeked Ren caught him in a headlock from behind.
Jun sweatdropped as she whispered to Sango, "You don't suppose that HoroHoro-kun does this on purpose, do you?"
Sango's expression was deadpanned as Pirika shook her head at her brother's antics, "Are you just catching onto that?"
After a few more minutes of banter, Kagome piped up, "Alright, guys. It's pretty cold out here so I'm gonna head up now." She skipped up a few stairs but turning and waving down to her friends. "I'll tell you all about it when I get back. See ya later!" The collective bids of goodbye and winter air biting her nose urged her further up the stairs.
'A coronation, huh…?' Kagome thought as she continued her ascent of the salted stairway. 'I wonder what this is all about. It's not like I'm a princess or marrying an aristocrat or something.' Before she could further ponder tomorrow's event, a familiar head of brunette hair came more and more into view. As she neared the top, her mouth further dropped. 'So he came after all.'
"Hao…you're here," She greeted almost in disbelief as the shaman raised his hand.
"But of course," The shaman smiled gently. "You've been wanting to see me, haven't you?"
Kagome inwardly groaned at the warmth in her cheeks as she huffed, "You don't have to word it like that. It's embarrassing."
Hao maintained his innocence with a smile, "But it's the truth, isn't it? I had the feeling that you've been calling for me."
"You're not going to let me live this down, will you?" The priestess' shoulders slumped and head lowered in defeat, "Fine. Yes, Hao. I…" her blushed intensified, "...I wanted to see you."
To her chagrin, Hao raised a hand to his cheek tenderly, "My, my~ You'll make me blush."
Kagome's hands were fists at her sides as she exploded, "As if you have the decency to feel embarrassed!" But instead of reacting to her outburst, Hao merely laughed heartily, earning a deeper blush from her. "Oh, jeez. You don't take me seriously, do you?"
"Of course I do," Hao answered, his smile wide. "I wouldn't have come all this way if I didn't."
"That's fair," Kagome sighed before straightening up. "Anyway, I'd like to speak with you, but uh…" She shifted a bit. "It's…pretty cold out here so, do you…" Her eyes strayed between his growing smile and the ground. The priestess was unaware of cute Hao found her embarrassment. "Would you like to come inside?"
Kagome felt instant regret from the glimmer in Hao's eyes. "Why, Kagome," His hand met the area covering his heart as his eyes closed into a sweet smile. "I'd be honored."
"Okay, let's go," She paused mid-step and turned to give him a warning glare. "My family is in there so you'd better not say or do anything to embarrass me." Despite how he easily agreed, she thought to herself, 'Oh God. Why don't I believe him?' The pink-cheeked Kagome continued eying Hao warily as they trekked across the shrine grounds towards her home.
"Alright…" Kagome whispered to herself as they stood before the door. "Here we go…" she muttered to prepare herself, much to Hao's silent amusement. She reached and pressed on the doorbell. "Remember, don't embarrass me," she warned the teen at her side just before the door opened.
To her surprise, it wasn't Higurashi-san that stood before them on the opposite side of the threshold. Instead, Kagome and Hao took in the shocked, blinking faces of Momiji and Botan.
"Good evening," Hao greeted while flashing a cordial smile.
"Eh…" Kagome froze and sweatdropped, 'Here we go…'
Momiji's eyes were twinkling like stars as her hands cradled her cheeks. And Kagome could have sworn she saw hearts swimming in Botan's eyes as she cupped her hands. The twins cooed simultaneously, "He looks just like Yoh-sama! Kyaaaaaa!"
Kagome was surprised to find Hao's face fixed into a pleasant expression. 'Well…' She thought with a sweatdrop, 'He took that pretty well.' She then made a shooing motion with her hand, "Come on, you two. Let us in. We'll catch our deaths out here."
"Right!" The twins chorused and parted to make way. They allowed Kagome to step into the foyer. As their cousin swapped her boots for her house shoes, they shamelessly accosted Hao by each of his arms and led him towards the shoe rack.
"Right this way~" Botan whispered dreamily, her eyes never straying from his face.
Momiji scrambled and grabbed the slippers reserved for Yoh, "Here! These should fit you perfectly!"
Kagome sighed and facepalmed when the twins squealed at Hao's smile, "Thanks for your hospitality." He merely chuckled when the pair offered to assist him in changing footwear. "Please, don't trouble yourselves any further."
"Momiji? Botan?" Higurashi-san's voice approached from an adjacent room. A moment later, the woman stepped into the area. "What's got you so exci—?" Her eyes landed on the teens. Kagome looked mortified as Hao allowed the twins to assist in removing his cloak. "Oh, I see. Kagome, you're home and you brought another friend." The mother touched her cheek, "It's wonderful to know you're making so many friends."
Kagome breathed a sigh of relief when Hao's cloak removal didn't result in his exposed upperbody. Instead, the shaman sported a plain, short-sleeved T-Shirt. 'Thank goodness…' She then threw Hao a silent, deadpanned glare, 'You planned this, didn't you?'
"Good evening," Hao greeted with a slight dip of his head. "My name is Asakura Hao." Kagome shrunk away as he was practically glowing, "It's a pleasure to meet the family responsible for such a lovely girl."
"Oh, dear~" Higurashi-san chuckled behind a hand, "You flatter us. Dinner is just about ready. Won't you join us, Hao-kun?"
The three priestesses who watched the exchange were stunned. The twins stiffened and inwardly reeled at Hao's casual use of Kagome's name. Meanwhile, Kagome's eye twitched as she thought, 'H-Hao…kun…? That feels so wrong.'
Soon, Kagome was anxiously glaring down at her lap as she, her family, and Hao settled around the table. 'He's definitely well-behaved, but…' She stole a glance at the amicable-looking Hao to her right. 'Knowing his shamelessness, I can't let my guard down.'
Sensing her gaze, Hao turned his head and gave her a wordless smile.
'E-Eh!' Kagome hated how she instantly blushed. 'Don't fall for it, Kagome!' She forced herself to avert her eyes to her cousins who sat directly across from her. 'You know what he's really like!' But that line of thought made her think of the original world, when she knew him as the Shaman King.
[ "So why not try falling for me instead?"]
'No! Not that!' The priestess internally screamed.
'I don't really need Reishi to know what you're thinking, little canary,' Hao thought, peering at the inwardly panicking Kagome from the corner of his eye. He chuckled but returned his attention to Higurashi-san as she responded to the elder Higurashi's inquiries about their guest.
"His name is Asakura Hao," Higurashi-san explained as she finished setting down the final dish.
Hao and Kagome noted the flash of recognition in Kaede's eyes before her brows furrowed. "Asakura Hao, huh…?" the head priestess murmured. She looked across the table at the shaman, "And what brings you to Higurashi shrine, Asakura Hao?"
Hao's warm demeanor remained as he answered, "Ah. Kagome wanted to speak to me and I knew she'd be here so I thought it would be a good time." When the family members began partaking in the sukiyaki, he followed suit and grabbed his chopsticks. "Besides, it's about time that I met the family of the girl who I'm fond of."
Kagome's and the twin's chopsticks clattered to the table.
Sota jumped up, both shocked and repulsed, "What?! You mean this cool-looking guy likes Kagome?! Ewwww!"
Meanwhile, the priest was weeping joyfully into his sleeve, "I-I'm so moved that there's such a bold youngster out there with traditional values!" Higurashi-san chuckled but looked unfazed as Kaede's face betrayed surprise.
Kagome was quick to pull Hao closer by a side bang while whisper-yelling, "I thought I told you not to embarrass me!"
"Ah, I thought that you mentally prepared yourself enough by now," The Asakura whispered back while wearing a shameless grin.
The priest was quick to speak up, "To want to meet us like this—do you intend to ask us for Kagome's hand?"
Hao answered as he dipped a strip of beef into a bowl of beaten egg, "I do." Kagome wanted to disappear as Momiji and Botan threw her identical looks of betrayal. "I've known that Kagome is the person who I want by side for a long time."
Kagome wanted to rebuttal but the twins jumped to their feet and pointed at her, "Kagome, explain why you're hogging all of the magnificent boys to yourself!"
"I'm not hogging anyone!" She retorted before gesturing at Hao with her thumb. "If you want him, you can gladly take him off my hands."
"Ah, Kagome," Hao's sigh was dramatic as he clutched at his chest. "Your callousness wounds me."
The dining room was thrown into chatter as Sota questioned the adults, "Why are all of you acting like this is normal?! They're still kids!"
But his question fell on deaf ears as his mother remarked gleefully, "Oh, dear… I wonder what we should do. He hasn't vocalized it but I'm sure Yoh-kun is also interested in our Kagome." She didn't notice how the priest's expression brightened more and more as he listened to her musings. "And then there's Tao Ren-kun who we haven't met yet. And dear Bankotsu-kun has reunited with her. I remember how many times he came to the shrine just to walk with her to school."
"Mmmm…" Kaede hummed. "The Higurashi family hasn't arranged marriages in many generations so it should be no different with Kagome. Let's leave the decision to her when she's an adult."
Her husband made a determined fist, "It's true that we Higurashi's have been allowed to marry the partner of our choice for years, but because of that, the spiritual power in our bloodline has been waning!" He looked to his daughter-in-law and wife and suggested willfully, "I believe it's time to revive the tradition of marrying our descendants to strong partners!"
"Oh, Father," Higurashi-san sighed. "I'm sure Kagome would hate the decision being made for her." She then smiled as she watched her daughter bicker with her cousins and Hao, "Besides, only someone strong will be able to keep her attention anyway."
Needless to say, there was more conversation than eating throughout the meal. But finally, Kagome was leading Hao up to her room for the talk that she'd been wanting. When the pair reached the top of the stairs, the priestess turned and placed her hands on her hips. She glared down at her cousins and brother who had been creeping up behind them. "This conversation is private so no eavesdropping!" She told them before grabbing Hao's arm, dragging him into her room, and shutting the door behind her.
"My, my~" Hao smiled teasingly, "I didn't know you wanted to get me alone so badly."
Kagome blushed as she leaned against the door, "Don't get any funny ideas. I just want to talk." Hao's amused huff of a laugh cued that he was more than aware of that. She then gestured towards the modest area. It wasn't as nearly as spacious as her room at the Tao complex but she still wanted to be hospitable. "You can sit anywhere you'd like." She wasn't surprised when Hao settled on her bed instead of at her study desk.
"So," Hao began as Kagome sat next to him. "You're stressed because of all of these changes."
Kagome nodded as she stared at her lap, "Un. I'm sure you've heard what's happening tomorrow." She then looked to him, her eyes reflecting worry, "What do you think they have planned?"
Hao's smile was reassuring as he responded, "Nothing to be concerned about. I'm sure they've learned their lesson." His eyes darkened as he continued, "Besides, the weak are predictable. Once they observe true power, they tend to fall in line."
"I see…" Kagome muttered. "Still…a coronation. I can't even begin to imagine what'll happen."
"You have nothing to worry about," The Asakura told her. "Rest assured that I'd never let anything bad happen to you."
The priestess blushed a bit but nodded, "I know. But the last thing that I want is a repeat of before." Her expression then fell, "Understand, Hao…? No more killing like that…"
"Yes, yes," Hao sighed as if it was a chore. "I wouldn't want to incur my little canary's wrath."
Kagome scowled and asserted softly, "I'm serious. If you do anything like that again, I'll have to stop you."
"Famous last words from countless people before you," the Asakura stated. "But coming from your lips…I'll allow it."
"Hao, there's one more thing," Kagome's voice picked up. "It's about…" She blushed and averted her eyes. "...my body…"
"Oh, that," Hao sounded happier than he should have. "Your body is changing because of the integration. I'm actually impressed with how strong your body is. When you were split in two, your mortal body had limitations and experienced debilitating consequences to accessing your other half's power." He was practically beaming as he added, "But look you now, you're integrating all of that power without exploding. It's astonishing that such a small body is hosting such a large soul."
"I figured that it's just side effects of the integration but…" Her head fell. "Why do they have to be so random and inconvenient?"
Hao chuckled and raised a finger, "You should give yourself more credit. Your soul is your true body and your body is like clothing. You're functioning while wearing clothes that are several sizes too small."
"Well, that's an interesting way to look at it…" Kagome sighed. "But how long do you think it'll take for my soul to settle down? I don't wanna deal with this stuff for years."
"Who knows?" The Asakura shrugged. "But, if you want a quick solution that'll put an instant stop to these changes, I do have one."
The priestess' eyes widened before she leaned closer to him, interest piqued and excited, "Really?! What is it?! I'll do anything!"
"I doubt that…" Hao smirked a bit. "There's only one solution but I'd bet everything that you won't do it."
Kagome glared a bit, feeling challenged, "Oh yeah? Well, I bet that I would."
"A friendly wager with my little canary?" Hao proposed with a smirk. "Sounds fun." His smirk then brightened into a smile, "How about this?" His next statement made her eyes double in size. "I wager my place in the Shaman Fights. If I lose, I'll drop out of the Fights and won't pursue my ambitions."
"No way. This is a set-up," Kagome's glare became suspicious. "I'm not betting my place in the Shaman Fights!"
Hao chuckled and told her, "I wouldn't ask you to. All I want if I win is a kiss."
Within the blink of an eye, Kagome was on the opposite end of the bed. "There's no way. There's got to be some catch to this!"
The Asakura hummed as he made himself comfortable, crossing his legs and propping his cheek into a hand. "Come now. What are you so suspicious of? The stakes are much higher for me if I lose."
"That's true, but…" Kagome's nose scrunched up. "That's exactly why it's suspicious. But fine." She scooted closer and extended her hand, "I accept this wager."
Hao's hand took Kagome's and gave it a gentle squeeze, "Then we're in agreement."
"Alright," She retracted her hand, "What do I have to do to stop these side effects?"
"It's simple." The shaman's eyes sharpened like a cat but his smile remained. "Because the problem is how powerful your soul has become, you can simply displace a portion of it." Kagome's face became horrified, "Instead of the Jewel of Four Souls, you can give birth to the Jewel of A Thousand Souls."
"Absolutely not!" Kagome barked, but instantly, her outrage became realization. 'Damn it. I lost.'
"I told you~" Hao almost sung, ignoring the priestess' dark glare.
"You knew that I wouldn't do something like that!" She pointed out while roughing poking his shoulder.
The Asakura confirmed without missing a beat, "Indeed and I won myself a kiss." He saw Kagome's gloomy aura and smiled, "But don't worry. I don't intend to collect my reward today. I'm going to save it for something special."
The priestess blushed deeply and scowled, looking skittish, "I'd rather just get it over with…"
"My, my," Hao smirked. "I didn't know that you were in such a rush to kiss me." He then got to his feet, "But alas, I'm a romantic so I'll wait for the right time."
"Romantic, my butt," Kagome grumbled as she followed suit. The priestess opened her door and instinctively jumped out of the way as Momiji, Botan, and Sota landed in a heap on the floor. "Eh," Kagome's eye twitched and grumbled as she and Hao sidestepped them, "Didn't I tell them not to eavesdrop?"
Hao merely chuckled and ignored the twin's cries of his name and Sota's whines for them to get off him. "No harm, no foul," the shaman commented as the two descended the staircase. Higurashi-san stepped from the living room into the foyer after Hao began reapplying his outerwears.
"Oh, Hao-kun," The woman frowned worriedly. "It's a bit late to be heading out on your own. Won't you stay the night with us?"
From behind his back, Kagome silently shook her head and made an "x" with her arms. But Hao merely smiled, "Your concern touches me, but I can assure you that I'll be fine." He adjusted his cloak then turned to see Kagome looking deceptively innocent. "Besides," he added, mirth swimming in his voice, "I've discovered that Kagome is in a rush to be kissed—"
"Okay! Time for you to go!" Kagome cut in as her palms urged Hao towards the door. "Thanks for stopping by. We really should do it again sometime," her pleasantries were betrayed by a rushed pace. When Hao was on the other side of the doorway, the priestess gave him a disapproving look, "Why do you do this to me?"
"Honestly, your flustered and angry faces are quite cute," Hao admitted. "Even if I tried to resist, I can't help myself."
Kagome blushed despite herself, "Right…" She shuffled her feet then looked to his face, "I…appreciate you coming out here."
"Hmph," a small smirk played at his lips before he raised a hand, "Goodnight, my little canary. I'll be watching over you."
"Goodnight…Hao," She whispered back before closing the door. Kagome leaned against it for a moment to process the events of the past couple of hours. "He came…and…it wasn't so bad." Her eyes closed as she took a deep breath, 'I can do this. Hao can be saved.' When her eyes reopened, she froze to find Momiji and Botan standing before her, one with her arms crossed and the other with her hands on her hips.
"Kagome…" Momiji's irritation was apparent. "Explain yourself."
The raven-haired priestess' hands rose, "There's nothing really to explain…"
Botan huffed and stepped closer, "But there is! What's with you bringing all of these boys home and not taking anyone for your boyfriend?!"
"And Hao-sama's heart is so bare for you," Momiji sniffed as she dabbed her eyes with a handkerchief. "He's so young and yet, he's made it clear that he wants to marry you."
Kagome's smile was crooked as she explained, "Well, yeah… But, as far as I'm concerned, it's way too early for me to be thinking about marriage. I don't even have a boyfriend."
"That's unforgivable!" The twins cried in unison as they backed their cousin further into the door. "Such lax thinking when girls like us don't even have boys interested is unforgivable!"
She sweatdropped and sighed, 'I can see where they're coming from. I'm sure a lot of girls would be happy to be in my position but…' The twins didn't notice how Kagome's eyes became dejected. 'This isn't some slice of life anime. I don't have the time or luxury to date anyone. I have to…'
'...dedicate myself to my goal.'
S.H.A.M.A.N.K.I.N.G.
The Higurashi family was escorted from the shrine to Shibuya on a private, luxury bus. The sleek, white vehicle was parked at the base of the stairs at 8 AM sharp. Its large windows were obscured by a dark tint that further accented the exclusiveness of the transport. The driver was a beaming middle-aged man dressed in a navy uniform. The family was largely surprised and impressed at how he greeted each member by name as they boarded one by one.
The driver tipped his cap as Kagome finally appeared at the door, "And a special good morning to you, Kagome-sama."
"Oh, thank you," The priestess smiled and nodded respectfully before turning towards the interior. 'Oh, wow… They really went all out.' This was unlike any bus that she'd ridden before. Instead of rows upon rows of basic seats, this bus sported plush, leather couches that stretched along each side. The walking space was so wide that the floor-mounted glass tables between the cushions didn't pose as tripping hazards.
Her mother was already smiling as one of two servers began waiting on her. "Good morning, Higurashi-sama," The woman sported the typical black sever's garments. "Is there anything that I can get for you this morning?"
Higurashi-san offered a warm smile and responded, "I thank you but I'm fine. We just had breakfast so there's no need to provide any refreshments."
Sota then raised his hand, "I'm Higurashi-sama too! Can I get some juice?"
Momiji and Botan exchanged looks before raising their hands, "We're Higurashi-sama as well! We'd also like some juice!"
Kagome settled down on her own couch before peeling off her winter coat. She immediately pulled out her phone and opened up her emails. She smiled upon seeing the multiple texts left by her friends. She opened her private chat with Yoh first and found a simple message that was dated for the previous night. "Congratulations, Kagome. I'm sure you'll do great."
'I'm sure you'll do great…?' Kagome blinked at the statement. 'What does that mean?'
Icy road conditions stretched the forty-minute ride into an hour and a half. But the staff nor Higurashi's were worried as the ceremony wasn't scheduled to begin until eleven.
There was a surrealness to stand before the jade-roof building again after so long. Meiji Shrine. It had been years since Kagome was last here. And that previous time was when she failed the Shinto priestess demonstrations. Before she could fall into the memories, a group began approaching the family.
"Good morning and welcome, Kagome-sama," a familiar voice greeted.
The priestess turned to face the group and was surprised to find the faces of the shaman heads from her kidnapping. Leading the procession was none other than Yamato Takato. "Yamato-san, it's been a while," She greeted with a slight bow. "How are you?"
"I am doing well now that I'm in your presence, Kagome-sama," Takato responded before he and the other shamans bowed at the waist.
"Kagome…" Higurashi-san looked surprised. "You…know these people…?"
Kagome nodded and smiled uneasily, "Yes, well… We're all in the same profession. They're all heads of some great shaman families."
Kaede and her husband bowed to the group and the head priestess spoke up, "It's a pleasure to see you again after so long."
"Likewise, Higurashi-sama," Takato nodded to head priestess before looking to Kagome. "Now, Kagome-sama, follow me. You need to be briefed and prepared for the ceremony." He looked at her relatives and gestured towards the main shrine, "Kotobuki-san will escort the rest of you to your accomodations."
Kaede scowled and spoke, "I mean no offense but I'm not keen on allowing my grand daughter to be taken alone by a group of adults."
The head priest looked outraged by the admission, "But dear, these are our people and our acquaintances!"
Kagome shook her head and smiled softly, "Don't worry, 'baa-chan. Nothing bad will happen to me."
Takato nodded and placed a fist to his chest, "Yes, I vow that no harm will befall Kagome-sama while I'm around."
Shippo then appeared and added, "Don't worry, Kaede-baachan! I, Shippo-sama, will protect Kagome with my life!"
Kagome sweatdropped while chuckling, 'Shippo-chan, that's not reassuring coming from a spirit…'
After a final exchange, Kaede finally agreed to follow Kotobuki to their pre-ceremony accommodations. Meanwhile, Kagome walked besides Takato as they headed towards a smaller structure on the shrine grounds. The building appeared to be an old-fashioned conference room complete with a circle of tatami mats. It didn't take long for Kagome and the rest of the shamans to settle down and begin their discussion.
"Firstly," An middle-aged woman began. "Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Takanashi Rena, head of the Takanashi clan," after her introduction, she leaned forward until her forehead touched the floor. "Kagome-sama, I am one of the souls who you raised that day. I want to both apologize and thank you for your mercy."
"Eh?" Kagome's eyes widened as one by one, the shamans introduced themselves to her before bowing and extending their apologies to her. It took five minutes of non-stop introductions before every shaman had the opportunity to speak to the young priestess.
Finally, Takato picked himself up from his deep bow. "Kagome-sama, we know that nothing we say or do can ever make up for what we tried to do," he prefaced his statement with a guilt-ridden scowl. "But still, we pooled our resources and connections to arrangement this ceremony for you."
"I see…" Kagome responded. "But, what is this ceremony exactly?"
"Kagome-sama…" Takato's eyes closed as his expression became solemn. "Even before the attempt at your head, we all knew that you were the priestess who flunked the demonstrations those years ago." He didn't see how her expression became deadpanned. "In fact, every now and then, your failure was brought up as an example of what not to do during a meet." Kagome almost fell but caught up.
Takato's eyes then opened to meet Kagome's twitching ones, "So, we have arranged a private meet where you will demonstrate your abilities to an esteemed council. And once you pass, the Supreme Priestess herself will promote you."
"So it's basically a promotion exam…" Kagome concluded. 'Well…at this point, I don't see the harm in it.'
A discussion and a change of clothes later, Kagome stood before the familiar set of doors that filled her with apprehension years ago. She could still recall the unsettling weight in her stomach as she waited to be called into the demonstration room. But still time, the waiting area was much smaller and she didn't feel as if the walls were closing around her. The shadow of her sister didn't swallow her presence and confidence.
Kagome was now proud to sport her flowing red pants and pristine white top. 'Kikyo…' Kagome placed her hand to her heart. 'I did it. I came back after all.' Her thoughts were muted as her ears tuned in Takato's hosting voice beckoning for her entrance. The girl grabbed the golden handles and pulled the doors apart.
Kagome's face was neutral and head high as she entered the room. Just as it was years ago, the spacious room was clear in the center with its east and west walls aligned with tables of spectators. To the east, her family smiled and waved silently to her. She responded with a subtle dip of her head. She maintained her composure despite the surprise of spotting Yoh and Yohmei dressed in traditional cothing sitting amongst the east-side spectators. The former had his hair pulled back into a low ponytail. And to the west wall were a line of people who sported extravagant, ancient garments.
Takato awaited her at the center of the room, he gestured for her to come closer and spoke to the west spectators as she approached, "Kagome-sama may be young but today, she will prove that she is a prodigy worthy of your recognition." The shaman finally looked at the girl at his side and smiled, "Kagome-sama…" he whispered for her ears only. "You can do it."
Kagome nodded.
A moment later, Takato sauntered across the room towards the north wall. He rummaged through a chest for a moment before returning to Kagome's side. Cupped in his hands was a small pot of soil. Protruding from the center of the bed was a gray withered sprout. It was a dry, pathetic creature that looked as if it had been denied nutrients for weeks.
Kagome silently took the pot from his hands. She then turned towards the council on the west. She took a few step towards them then paused. Without a word, a globe of shimmering light surrounded the pot. All eyes were on the sprout as the priestess' energy coaxed it from the brink. Within seconds, the flat, frail stem grew robust and green. The weeping curve of the dying plant was now proud and erect.
Kagome dared to look from the plant to the faces of the council.
There were so many of them, some she vaguely recognized and others completely foreign.
But all of them were tight-lipped and inscrutable.
Still, she raised the pot higher then turned heel and presented it to the other spectators.
A mixture of surprise and pride from her family broke Kagome's composure and made her lips spread.
'That's one down…' The priestess thought as Takato took hold of the pot and returned it to the chest. He then returned to her, bearing a weathered, wooden box with a combination lock on its lid.
The shaman silently arranged the numbers and within seconds, the lid popped open, revealing a striking golden pendant that ended in a large, glistening ruby. Takato turned to east side and then the west, showcasing the object to the audience. "This is no ordinary necklace," He announced. "This is the infamous necklace of Sarah Wingood. This necklace has been cursed for a century after its owner jumped to her death from the despair of an unfaithful husband." His voice became grave as he explained, "The curse is so powerful that it has claimed the lives of eleven people who merely touched it. This necklace has been blessed by countless priests over the years but none have been able to purify the evil lying within."
With her eyes on the swirling dark aura around the necklace, Kagome didn't notice the expressions of concern that her family wore. Yoh silently patted Higurashi-san's shoulder and gave her an easy-going smile.
"Kagome-sama," Takato looked down at the girl while extending the box. "If you'd please."
Kagome nodded and reached for the necklace without hesitation. The moment that her fingers laid on the jewel, a burst of light was emitted from the crimson rock. The light was accompanied by a hissing sound that faded away with the flash of light. The young priestess then retracted her hand and glimpsed at the council.
Their disinterest was replaced by surprise and murmurs.
'One more…' Kagome told herself as he closed the box and returned it to the chest. 'And if this is anything like the usual demonstrations, then…'
"And for her final demonstration, Kagome-sama will choose her own display of her spiritual powers," Takato declared. He then bowed to the priestess and resigned himself to a spot along the western wall.
'Great…' She thought as her face became focused. 'I hate being put on the spot.' Her eyes then darted across the room, scanning for inspiration. Finally, a fit of coughing broke the silence. 'That's it!' The priestess settled on a council member, a pale man with a medical mask over his face. Kagome walked to the table and stood before the man. She waited for his fit of hacking to end before she spoke up, "Excuse me, Sir. Will you assist me in this demonstration?"
His brown eyes widened but nodded and spoke with a phlegm-laced voice, "O-Of course."
Kagome aimed her palms at the man and closed her eyes. 'It feels like cheating, but…' She allowed her energy to seek out the man before her. She could envision him within her mind's eye. She could sense what his heart longed for most.
Healing.
Reprieve.
The man gasped as his body was encased by a soothing energy. It wrapped around his frame like a second-skin. The warmth was absorbed by his pores. He stared down at his fingers in disbelief then looked up at Kagome with a covered, gaping mouth as his eyes opened. There was a stark difference in the voice that he now spoke with. It was clear and full of fortitude. "What did you do? I feel completely refreshed!"
The priestess gave a small smile and answered, "Just a simple healing spell, of sorts."
The man's complexion was warmer as he stood up from his seat. "Well, I, Tokagami Hiroto, certainly vouch for Kagome-sama's abilities." It wasn't traditional, but he nodded and clapped. His applause proved infectious as the spectators on the opposite end of the room joined in. Kagome turned and met Yoh's eyes. He nodded to her, smiling and clapping his approval with the others.
The priestess turned around again when more applause resounded from next to her. To her surprise, the council showed their approval by joining in the ovation.
Kagome's heart began fluttering just a bit faster.
Years ago, she would never have dreamed of such an outcome.
The disappointed, exasperated, and sympathetic stares were now receptive.
And the person that they were impressed by was: her.
The failure of the Higurashi priestesses.
Kagome took a step backward and bowed to the council.
The applause lightened up then faded away as a young woman stood from the middle of the council table. She was a comely creature with incredibly long ebony hair and honey-brown eyes. Her frame was swallowed but adorned by the colors of a junihitoe. An intricate golden coronet circled the base of her head. Her steps were small and calculated as she slowly approached Kagome. Her pale hands cradled a small chest.
The room fell silent as the woman stood before Kagome. The priestess fell to one knee before the woman's majesty. "Higurashi Kagome," the woman's voice was as light as a feather. "I am Takahashi Manami, first daughter of the Japanese Imperial Family, representative of the Emporer, and this nation's Supreme Priestess."
"It's an honor to meet, Takahashi Manami-sama," the priestess kept her head down.
"Likewise. Our family has heard great things of your power and mercy," Manami responded as she lifted the top of the chest. "On behalf of the Imperial Family, I bestow this coronet and title upon you."
Kagome lifted her head enough to gaze upon the curving circlet of silver sitting atop a bed of velvet. At the center of the silver circle sat an ornament resembling the weaving pattern that Kagome was named after. Twin crimson ribbons dangled from the sides of the coronet. Despite its simple design, Kagome found the piece delicate, splendid—almost too extravagant for her to accept as her own.
"Higurashi Kagome, do you vow to use your powers for the safety and peace of our nation?" Manami asked.
"Yes…" The priestess whispered back, compelled by the situation to reply in kind.
"And do you accept the responsibility that comes with this official promotion?"
Kagome nodded readily, "I do."
"Very well." Manami then smiled as she gingerly placed the circlet on top of Kagome's head. "Then behalf of the Imperial Family, I dub you: High Priestess, Higurashi Kagome."
The high priestess couldn't fight the rush of adrenaline in her belly: a swell of ecstasy and pride. "Thank you, Takahashi-sama. I'll do my best."
Manami closed the box and turned to face the council. "Everyone, please welcome this young lady, the newest High Priestess to join your ranks." Kagome took that as her opportunity to stand and face the others.
The faces that lined the council nodded their acceptance as Takato rose to stand by Kagome's other side. "And with that, everyone, you are free to head to the recreation hall for lunch and refreshments."
Those words cued the bodies from both sides of the room to stand from their seats. Several small crowds formed in the room as strangers and acquaintances alike began chatting about everything from the ceremony to future alliances. The first thing Kagome wanted to do was reunite with Yoh and her family. But she quickly found herself surrounded by many older faces, all extending their congratulations, welcomes, and expressions of surprise.
"Kagome-sama, I believe you've set a record today—the youngest high priestess to join the council," Kotobuki told her cheerily. "I'm sure there'll be plenty of older priestesses who will be jealous of you."
Takato nodded but waved his hand, "He's right but pay no mind to such things. Please continue using your powers for the good of the people."
It was then a familiar face made its way to the front of the crowd swarming Kagome. She was a beautiful woman with earthy brown eyes, long brunette hair, wearing traditional priestess clothing. "Kagome-chan, it's been a long time," she greeted.
"You're—!" Kagome mouth fell open. "The kind onee-sama from before!"
Even years later, Kagome could vividly remember her voice and the stroke of her gentle hand on her hand.
This was the one person who believed in her, even after she failed the meet years ago.
[ Give yourself time, I'm sure you'll grow into a wonderful priestess." ]
"I'm so glad that you remember me," The woman chuckled before placing a hand to her chest. "I never formally introduced myself back then so allow me to do so now. My name is Asakura Keiko."
Kagome instantly recognized that name as her eyes widened, "W-Wait! You're Yoh's mother?!" She then flashed back to the photo album that she found in the Asakura storage. 'I can't believe that I didn't realize it until now!'
Keiko nodded and smiled gently, "I've heard so many great things about you." Her smile grew subtly, "You see? I was right about you after all."
Kagome ended up blushing lightly and giving a sheepish smile, "I know that I didn't show up to the meets after that. But your words really did stick with me all of these years. So thank you, Keiko-sama."
The older priestess shook her head and told her, "You're a High Priestess now, Kagome-chan. You don't need to be so formal with me."
The younger of the two shifted, "But still, you're Yoh's mother so I feel honored."
It was then that the crowd around Kagome made way for her family and the two other Asakura's. Yoh scratched the back of his head, "I still can't believe that you and Okaa-san know each other."
"Eh?" Kagome looked between mother and son and then asked, "How long did you know, Yoh?"
"Okaa-san just told that she met you when she returned from France a few days ago," The Asakura heir responded with a smile. "What a small world. It feels almost like fate."
Keiko chuckled from her hand, "Well, I definitely don't think that it was a coincidence." She then met Higurashi-san's eyes and bowed, "You must be Kagome-chan's mother. It's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Asakura Keiko, Yoh's mother."
Higurashi returned the bow, "The pleasure is all mine. I've been wanting to meet your family for some time now. Your boys are such joys to have around."
"Boys…?" Yohmei caught onto the world and his eyes hardened. He looked at his grandson, who nodded silently.
Meanwhile Kagome's grandfather looked at Sota expectantly, "You see? Even our Kagome can become a High Priestess. You should be inspired and begin to study to become a priest."
Sota blanched at the idea, "But it's not fair! Shinto priests have lots of exams and training to do! Priestesses have it way easier!"
Kagome sweatdropped and deadpanned, 'Oh, Sota. If only you knew…' But she opted to ignore that conversation in favor of standing next to Yoh and tuning to the exchange between their mothers.
"I'm sure your family is busy during the holidays so we should meet sometime in the new year, Keiko-san," Higurashi-san proposed pleasantly.
"Oh, please," Keiko waved her hand. "I'd like to become close to you so you can just call Keiko." She then looked at Kagome and stated, "You and Kagome-chan are so polite. I was just telling her not to call me Keiko-sama."
Yoh nodded and smiled, "Even Okaa-san is pretty relaxed so she's not one for formalities."
Keiko nodded as her hands clapped gently, "That's true. And there's no need for such things when you might be calling me 'mother' someday."
Yoh and Kagome both blushed deeply. He rubbed the back of his neck and wore an embarrassed grin, "Okaa-san, it's kinda embarrassing if you say it so bluntly." He then looked at Kagome, who had thrown her hands over her mouth in disbelief. "Eheh, sorry, Kagome. Okaa-san heard some things."
Kagome recovered and glared at Yoh with red cheeks, "What kind of things did you tell her?!"
Yoh raised his hand and smiled sheepishly, "Nothing bad, I swear!"
Meanwhile, Keiko was still engaging Kagome's mother with a charming smile, "I've heard that Kagome-chan is already quite popular at her age. But as a mother, I'd do anything to secure the union between our families.
Higurashi was holding her cheek as she replied, "Well, I'm certainly not against Kagome marrying into your family but we were just talking about how it's Kagome's decision."
The head priest then stepped forward, "As the Head Higurashi priest, I approve of our families joining in union!"
Momiji and Botan piped up, wearing identical pouts, "Keiko-sama, we volunteer to unite our families! We'd gladly marry into yours!"
Meanwhile, Kagome sat in a corner hugging her knees to her chest. Her head was hung low as a gloomy aura surrounded her. "Jii-chan is trying to marry me off for power…" Her voice was despondent. "We're regressing, aren't we?"
Yoh, who was squatted by her side, patted her shoulder soothingly, "Don't worry, Kagome. It'll all work out somehow."
Authoress' Notes: It feels so appropriate that Yoh v Ren will be a milestone chapter: Chapter 50! After that comes the Tao family arc! I'm so excited to finally reach this point in the story! Now, I'm calling it the Tao family arc right now but my sense of mental pacing usually never matches what actually happens when I write so who knows how long it'll actually be? I'm hoping that it'll at least be three chapters but we'll see what happens! Anyway, if you're still enjoying the fanfic, drop me a comment or feedback! I mainly need to know if taking the time out to update is a waste of time or not x_x so support me in any way you can! Thanks and see you in the next installment!
