Chapter 4
Act 3
A gasp escaped Chihiro as she lost her footing and began to tumble, headfirst, toward the stairs. Closing her eyes and preparing for the fall, Chihiro was startled when a hand suddenly grabbed her from behind, yanking her back and away from the stairs. She collapsed onto something…both hard and soft at the same time. A frustrated grunt echoed as she began to push up herself, causing her to freeze. Before she had time to speak…
"What the hell were you thinking?! You tryin' ta get yourself killed!"
Immediately, Chihiro recognized that voice! Her eyes snapped open and saw the large pompadour of Mondo's hair directly above her! He'd pulled her back and had her cradled in his arms, lying on his back on the floor.
"Bro! Did you catch her?!" Taka's voice called from behind them, rounding the corner a moment later.
"Yeah! She nearly fell down the goddamn stairs!" the biker told him, shifting around so both he and Chihiro could stand up.
Overcome with embarrassment Chihiro found herself speechless as they stood over her. However, instead of the scolding she'd expected, a vastly different event played out.
"Scolding can be for later! We don't have a lot of time! We need to hurry! Do it, Bro!" the Ultimate Moral Compass shouted, already heading down the stairs.
"Got it!" the Ultimate Bike Gang Leader responded.
Before she knew what was happening, Chihiro felt herself lifted off the ground and hoisted over Mondo's shoulder. Crying out in surprise, she immediately held down her skirt as the biker proceeded to carry her down the stairs, descending faster than she thought was safe!
"W-What are you—?!" she tried to say but was interrupted.
"We're helpin' you! Like we promised we would!" Mondo told her, jumping down the last few stairs before dashing off to catch up with Taka. "We're a god-damn team! Deal with it!"
"However! There will be no running in the halls!" Taka called out from ahead of them, speed-walking down the hall and toward the stairs leading to the first floor. "Speed-walking is a perfectly fine pace! And if we are careful, we should make it to Miss Taeko's room with plenty of time to get to the gym!"
"Let's just get this over with and get to the gym before anyone gets 'punished'!" Mondo called out, running past Taka, much to the other's frustration.
"Running is not conducive to a school environment! It's how Chihiro almost fell down the stairs!" Taka shouted, though continuing to speed-walk and getting left behind. "Chihiro! I don't want to tell you how to fulfill your leadership duties…but I strongly suggest you write him up for that!"
As Chihiro found herself carried toward her destination, she was again reminded of something Byakuya had told her.
"However, we both know that you will never be an effective leader…not so long as you rely on those two to pick you up each time you fall."
It was true…she did allow Mondo and Taka to make a lot of choices for her. The only reason she became their class' leader was because it was what they wanted. But still, when all was said and done, when she made a choice for herself, they supported her. Sure, they were a bit unconventional and strange…but, with the exception of her father, she never felt so accepted by anyone else in her entire life.
"I know there's logic in what he said, but…" she paused for a moment, a fragile smile slowly beginning to form on her lips. "How can anyone be a good leader if they aren't willing to let others help them?"
As Chihiro continued to ponder, Mondo finally reached the first floor, practically jerking to a halt. Jostled around by the sudden stop, the programmer tried to shift around but couldn't see over Mondo's elongated hair. A moment later, Taka appeared, and his movement ground to a halt as well.
Shifting around enough to glance behind her, Chihiro's eyes widened as she saw a frazzled Junko blocking their path. Through labored breaths, the fashionista managed to say, "W-We've got a problem…!"
"So get your butts in gear and get over to the gym! And don't bother asking 'why?'! You all know the drill by now! You have ten minutes to comply!"
…
…
…
"…Well shit."
Taeko Yasuhiro sat on her bed, creating more orange cheese stains on her white shirt as she wiped her fingers, before setting the half-empty tub down on the other side of her bed. The tub had been full that morning…she blamed the stress.
Not thirty minutes ago, Junko had left and had yet to get her a magazine…so the cheese puffs called to her and who was she to refuse? But now there was a completely new problem. After having just dealt with the two-faced 'fashionista', now she needed to contend with a literal two-faced, demonic teddy bear!
Audibly groaning, Taeko walked over to her door and tested it. It refused to budge.
"Still locked…just my luck," she mused as she returned to her bed, sitting on the edge and contemplating aloud. "They've got the perfect excuse now. 'Oh no, we forgot her in her room'," she shrilled her voice, impersonating Sayaka. Groaning again, she continued to talk with herself, "If they were smart, they'd just let it happen…but they're not. They're all so fucking stupid."
But she wasn't. She knew that sooner or later, before the time limit was up, someone would come to get her. It could be anyone, but if Taeko was a gambling woman, and she was, she'd bet that it'd be the two-faced fashionista again.
"Nosy bitch…" Taeko seethed, grinding her teeth together.
There was a slight chance it could be someone else, but since Junko had already come by once, odds were she'd be the one coming around to drag her to the gym. After all, the 'caring' Junko needed to keep up the act, pretending to care for everyone else.
"…Guess I'll just have to wait it out," the gambler groaned as she plopped back onto her bed, angrily waiting for someone to unlock her door. As she stared up at the ceiling, her thoughts refused to calm down. She kept hearing the annoying fashionista's words over and over and over again!
"It's not about satisfaction. I'm just doing what I can, the same as everyone else."
"What a fucking joke…" Taeko said aloud, knowing that no one, except possibly the Mastermind, might hear her. "All this 'just doing what I can' bullshit really pisses me off. Her strategy is so fucking obvious and no one sees it!"
It was simple…Junko was playing the part of mother hen in order to keep herself safe. By actively helping anyone in trouble, she established herself as trustworthy and therefore, relatively untouchable. It was obvious that Junko wasn't as tough as she came off. Sure, she had some fight in her, but after nearly being skewered during the first few days, she'd changed her tone entirely. The fashionista adapted to the truth…the truth that she was just as vulnerable as the rest of them.
That's why she wanted to 'save' her fallen classmates. It gave her not only satisfaction, but security. Over the past few weeks, she'd practically built up a legion of allies! Everyone from the disgraced idol to the fucking brother-killing-biker was wrapped around her finger! Besides Taeko herself, only Byakuya hadn't fallen for her obvious power play! But none of her other classmates would ever see it that way!
Admittedly, it was a sound strategy, that much Taeko could agree with. It was obvious that Junko truly had no intention to play the killing game. Instead, her strategy was to wait it out, hoping the Mastermind would get bored with the lack of deaths and eventually just let them go…like a fucking fairytale!
But she was wrong…there was no 'Happily Ever After' awaiting them at the end of the road…the very idea was enough to make Taeko want to rage vomit!
"We're never getting out…we're all gonna fucking die in here!" she seethed, gripping the sheets of her bed so tightly her knuckles whitened. "Even if no one kills anyone else, we'll be trapped in this fucking hellhole until we're…old and decrepit! What kind of fucking life is that?!"
Her hand shot out, grabbing a pillow and flinging it across the room, the puffy bag of fluff knocking over a chair that dared impede it's path. Taking a few deep, heavy breaths, Taeko squeezed her eyes shut and forced herself to calm down. Getting angry over her situation wouldn't solve anything…she knew that. But…there was nothing else she could do!
Trapped in her room like this…all she could do…was wait—
*Ding*Dong*Ding*Dong*
Taeko suddenly snapped out of it as her doorbell rang. Taking just a moment to be sure she applied her resting bitch face, she walked toward her door just in time for it to open up.
Still furious from her earlier thoughts, Taeko abruptly called out, "About fucking time. I was half-convinced you'd decided to leave me…to…die…"
Her words died in her throat as the petite figure of Chihiro Fujisaki appeared in front of her. The programmer, visibly perturbed by the shouting, stood there with a hand on the door, blinking rapidly as she took in Taeko's appearance.
"…C-Celeste?" Chihiro asked, as if making sure she had the right person.
Hearing her 'forbidden' name caused a mixture of pleasure and anxiety to quickly sweep through the gambler. She desperately wanted to acknowledge it as her name…but due to her stubborn pride, she decided to abide by the punishment set for her.
"It's Taeko…" she seethed, more upset with herself for actually acknowledging it. "If I have to live with it, the least you can do is not remind me of what I've lost. How insensitive are you?"
Chihiro flinched at the gambler's barbed tongue, just as she'd expected. Having watched Chihiro for several weeks, the one thing Taeko knew in certainty was that the programmer couldn't stand any form of confrontation. But at the same time…
"…Yeah, you're right. I-I'm sorry, Taeko!"
The gambler almost smiled, this was too easy. She knew that Chihiro was quick to apologize, which made manipulating her all the easier. Not that Taeko had any plans to utilize such an opportunity…not anymore at least. Any motivation for schemes and payback were pretty far from her mind. At the moment…all she wanted was to get the stupid meeting over with so she could get back to her cheese-puffs.
"Whatever…" the gambler groaned, adjusting her cheese-stained clothes before a mocking huff escaped her. "I can't believe they sent you of all people. Was the two-faced bitch of a fashionista too preoccupied with her 'good-will' duties?"
Again, Chihiro flinched, but this time she dropped her gaze. Taeko knew her comments were harsh, but she didn't care. Even in a small way, this show of 'superiority' reinvigorated her. Yeah, it was petty, but the gambler knew that Chihiro didn't like it when someone spoke ill of her classmates. Not that Chihiro would ever dare to try and stick up for—
Suddenly, Chihiro's head shot up and with a stern voice she said, "You shouldn't say things like that. It's rude. Besides, we don't have time. Let's head to the gym."
Taeko's entire expression shifted to pure shock. As the programmer's words rang in her ears, all the gambler could do was blink rapidly as her mind tried to catch up.
"Did…Chihiro just…talk back to me?!"
It was an alien concept…the very idea went against everything Taeko thought she knew about Chihiro. And yet, that's what had just happened. Not only that, Chihiro didn't waste any more time chatting! She'd already turned around and was heading back out the door when reality finally caught up with Taeko.
Almost without noticing it, the gambler hurriedly followed Chihiro out the door…as if frightened that the petite programmer would shut her back inside!
"W-What the HELL is wrong with me?! This is Chihiro, of all people! She's too afraid to kill a goddamn mosquito, let alone leave someone to die! Once I have a chance, I'll put her in her place!"
Despite that assertion, Taeko felt a chill run through her body…remembering Chihiro's face from a moment ago. Never in her life would Taeko have guessed that the programmer would be capable of such a strong display. It was probably a front…yeah, that had to be it! Chihiro was just acting tough because she was secretly afraid of 'Celeste'! That had to be it…
As they exited her room, Chihiro closed the door for her and locked it using the key that had been confiscated by Byakuya the day before. Junko must have given it to her, further proving that this task had been forced upon Chihiro and she was just acting brave to save face.
Confident in her assessment, Taeko put her pride on the line as she scoffed and said, "Seriously, why did they send youinstead of Junko? Or did the 'Good Samaritan' send you in her place because she was rounding up Hifumi or something? Did she need a forklift to get him out of his room or—?"
"I chose to come and get you. I wasn't asked to do it." Chihiro cut her off, sliding the key into her pocket and turning to face her. Taeko almost flinched as she saw a hint of anger behind the gentle programmer's eyes. "Junko and the others are trying to get Hiro out of his room. He's locked himself inside and refuses to come out. And if we don't hurry, we'll all be executed for 'breaking the rules'. So please, let's just get going while we still have time."
Without another word, Chihiro began walking down the hall, not even glancing at Taeko. It must have been a pretty cold day in hell…because Chihiro finally seemed to have grown a spine.
Unconsciously, Taeko's hands balled into fists. Her face reddened and she felt like yelling…but she didn't. She just stood there for a moment, shocked and somewhat amazed by what she'd just seen. Even though the programmer's overly confident attitude perturbed the fuck out of her…deep down, Taeko couldn't deny that Chihiro had impressed her.
…At the same time, Taeko felt the last bit of superiority she'd once held over Chihiro vanish. All at once, the gambler knew that any sway her words once had…was gone. Not even Chihiro would listen to her anymore…and that somehow hurt even more than losing her name and dresses.
To go unnoticed…to be forgotten…that is what Taeko Yasuhiro feared the most. And whether or not her classmates had intended it…they were preying on the fear…and it kept her in check. The saddest part about it all was…Taeko had only just realized it, and it was too late to do anything about it.
Letting out a shaky breath, the gambler settled on a stern frown before turning and following after Chihiro. Even in this situation, her pride wouldn't allow herself to show weakness. And if, by some chance, someone was able to see just how much she was hurting, then she would truly have lost everything.
And if that happened…she knew…without a shadow of a doubt…that her will to live would evaporate. And as much as she protested otherwise…she truly didn't want to let that happen.
After all…her pride…was all she had left.
However, before they'd gone more than a few steps, Taeko's heard turned as a series of shouts rang out…
"Oh god…oh god…oh god…What was I thinking?!"
Chihiro mentally berated herself as she locked Taeko's door. She did so quickly, doing her best to hide the fact that she was trembling. For a brief second, she considered apologizing, but knew that would only make matters worse!
"What good would an apology do me now ?! Why did I antagonize her like that?! I was just trying to be assertive, like Junko told me to be! And now…I'm too scared to even look Taeko in the eye!"
Chihiro almost glanced over her shoulder but stopped herself. Or rather, she couldn't build up the courage to do so. Instead, she just listened as Taeko's heels clicked along the floor behind her. The gambler must not have had any regular shoes, because she was still wearing those loud red strap heels. Because of that, she still towered over Chihiro, adding more pressure to the already anxious programmer.
"I know this was my idea…but why did it have to turn out like this?!"
-A Few Minutes Earlier-
"I can't find Hiro," Junko explained, her voice strained, trying to hide the obvious panic. "I've searched pretty much every room on this floor, but he's not here!"
Chihiro, Mondo, and Taka stood at the foot of the stairs, flabbergasted by this news. Junko was out of breath, her hair a bit wild. As the shock of this information hit them, the Ultimate Moral Compass was first to respond.
"Are you sure he's not in the gym?" Taka asked, pondering the situation.
"I just checked there, but I didn't see him," she insisted, her voice growing more frantic by the second. "Almost everyone else was there, and they all said they hadn't seen him!"
"And you already checked the classrooms and other areas of the first floor?" the Moral Compass double-checked.
"Everywhere I could think of! I even tried the boys bathroom on this floor!" the Fashionista answered, scratching her head in perplexion.
"But then…where could he be?!" Chihiro instinctively shouted, her own fears boiling over.
"We didn't see him coming down here!" Mondo assured her, his voice a little too loud.
"But that doesn't mean he couldn't have been on a higher floor when the announcement played," Taka suggested, a deep scowl settling on his face. "He could have been somewhere like the pool or the library and we'd have no idea."
"But…we don't have time to search the entire school!" Chihiro exclaimed, trying to think of a way to do just that, but to no avail.
"I doubt he was on a higher floor," Junko told her, speaking calmer to try and diffuse the situation. "He said he was gonna stay in his room, remember? I haven't seen him since he shut himself in there.
"Have you checked there yet?" Taka asked the Fashionista, moving around Chihiro to stand in front of Junko.
Shaking her head, she replied, "No, I'm on my way there now—".
"Alright, then let's fuckin' do this!" Mondo immediately interrupted, side stepping all of them before dashing down the hallway, only to stop when they didn't immediately follow. "What are ya waiting for?! We need to hurry the fuck up!"
"Hold up, Mondo! We shouldn't all go," Junko surprisingly interjected. "At least one of us should go to the gym, make sure that I didn't just miss Hiro in the hall or something."
"I can do that!" Taka volunteered himself. "And if he is there, I'll come and let you all know!"
"Uh, you sure about that, man?" the biker said, a bit concerned. "Your 'speed walking' sure as hell won't be fast enough to—".
"I assure you that it will be fast enough!" the Moral Compass assured them before lowering his gaze slightly. "And, if it came down to it…getting written up for running in the halls is nothing compared to knowing my friends are safe."
A genuine moment of shock sparked through Junko, Mondo, and Chihiro. And although he was as calm and cool as ever, the determined expression on Taka's face proved the worth of his words. It was kind of embarrassing, for them and not him. With everything they knew about Taka, it should have been obvious that he'd break whatever rules he needed in order to keep his friends from being killed. But it literally took him saying it for them to realize it.
Compelled by that embarrassment, Chihiro replied, "Yeah. Thanks, Taka!"
"Of course! Now, let's all get moving! We don't have much time!" he shouted, already turning to head toward the gym. Glancing at his watch, he grimaced and said, "We've only got eight minutes! Hurry!"
And with that, Taka 'speed walked' down the hallway, almost as fast as Mondo could run! Once he was gone, the remaining three headed toward Hiro's room. The three of them traveled quickly, making it to the dorms within a minute.
However, before they got past the cafeteria, Chihiro suddenly remembered something important!
"Wait! Junko, did someone already take Cel—uh, I mean, Taeko to the gym?" Chihiro asked, hopeful that it may already be taken care of.
"No, not yet. I was gonna do it but now with Hiro missing—".
"O-Okay," the programmer unintentionally cut her off. "I'll go get her and you two can try and find Hiro."
A long pause followed that suggestion, and for a moment, Chihiro thought someone was going to object but then…
"Are you…sure you can handle that?" Junko questioned, obviously trying not to sound critical. "Taeko was in kind of a bitchy mood when I saw her and…maybe I should go instead."
If she was being honest, Chihiro felt slightly hurt by that comment. Even if Junko was simply concerned for her, there was a lack of trust there…and it stung. However, she pushed all that aside for the moment. Now wasn't the time to get caught up in those feelings.
Clenching her tiny fists, Chihiro nodded firmly and said, "I-It's okay, I can handle it. I'll go get her and meet up with you in front of Hiro's room."
A slightly shocked expression crossed Junko's face, but it only lasted for half an instant before it was replaced with a determined visage. Reaching into her pocket, she produced a key and handed it to Chihiro.
"This is her room key," she explained. "Be sure to lock her door once you're both out. Got it?"
"Got it," Chihiro repeated back, tucking the key into her own pocket.
"Oh, and a word of advice," Junko continued, surprising the programmer. "Don't let Taeko push you around. If she tries to harass you, just ignore her. Or better yet, remind her we've only got a few minutes to get to the gym. That'll shut her up!"
Taking that advice to heart, Chihiro nodded. "Alright. I'll keep that in mind—!"
"C'mon! We're runnin' outta time!" Mondo interrupted, already heading down the hallway leading to Hiro's room. "Get a move on, dammit!"
"Right!" the two girls replied, splitting up to carry out their respective missions.
"Just keep moving…don't think about how angry Celeste must be—wait, I mean Taeko! Oh, that right, she's probably really upset that I called her the wrong name too!"
Try as she might, Chihiro couldn't stop mentally berating herself. She only hoped that Mondo and Junko had found Hiro and they'd all be waiting for them to meet up. Sadly, that hope was crushed when the loud voices of her classmates met her ears from down the hallway.
"Goddammit Hiro! Open the fucking door!"
"It's no use, he's not answering."
Rounding the corner, with Taeko trailing behind her, Chihiro spotted her friends, looking more distressed than ever.
Junko and Mondo stood in front of Yasuhiro Hagakure's door. Despite it being soundproof, the biker repeatedly shouted and pounded on the door. The Fashionista rang his bell a number of times, but to no avail. It quickly became obvious that even after a solid few minutes of trying to get his attention, there was no sign of the Ultimate Clairvoyant.
"Mondo! Junko!" Chihiro called out, increasing her pace and forcing Taeko to keep up with her as she sped to where her friends were. Staring at the door for a second, she asked the obvious, "Hiro still won't come out?"
"The bastard won't even answer the fucking door!" Mondo shouted, abruptly ramming his foot into it. "Stupid freaking rules! A guy can't even bust a door down without getting executed in this dump!"
"Yeah…" a defeated Junko agreed, her face unusually stern. "It doesn't make sense though. It's like he's not even in there…"
"M-Maybe he isn't!" Chihiro proposed, trying to sound hopeful. "Maybe he's…already at the gym and was just…hiding from you earlier?"
"But why would he do that?" Junko asked, as if genuinely looking for an answer. "Even if he was, there's no reason for him to hide in the gym…is there?"
"I…guess there isn't," Chihiro admitted, hanging her head in defeat. "But still, why wouldn't he go to the gym after hearing Monokuma's warning?"
"No clue. I searched every room on this floor…there's no way I missed him." The confidence in Junko's voice only made the situation feel more dire. Biting the tip of her thumb, she gritted her teeth and continued, "Where the hell did he go then?"
Her voice almost trembled, half angrily and half seemingly terrified. Hearing that, Mondo couldn't stop himself letting out a frustrated shouted before menacingly glaring at Hiro's door.
"Hey, if he wants to get executed for being such a dumbass, then it's his own damn fault!" Mondo abruptly yelled, kicking the door again for good measure. "Ya hear that, dumbass! You're gonna fuckin' die if ya don't get your ass out here—!"
"He's not the only dumbass out here…"
Taeko's stern comment drew their attention. The three friends turned and found themselves staring down a perturbed Ultimate Gambler. With her arms folded over her chest and one foot tapping impatiently on the linoleum, Taeko Yasuhiro scoffed at them loudly before glaring directly at Mondo.
"Did all your braincells abandon you when you grew out that obnoxious mop you call a hairstyle?" Mondo gapped at the harsh comment but before he could answer, she scoffed, "Soundproof. Rooms. Yelling is pointless and wastes more time—".
"Hold up…Celeste?! Is that really you?!" the biker interrupted, finally taking in her new appearance and pointing almost angrily in her direction. "What the hell happened to you?! You look one of those dirty otaku who never leave their room!"
A rapid headache engulfed Taeko as she internally fought with herself NOT to agree with him. Sadly, with how disheveled her hair was, that fact that she wore no make-up and her shirt had numerous cheese-puff stains…he was kind of right. She epitomized the appearance of a NEET.
Taking in a deep, anger suppressing breath, the gambler huffed loudly before briskly walking around him, heading for the gym.
"Hey! Where do you think—?!" Mondo yelled, but suddenly quieted when Taeko held up her middle finger in his direction.
Stunned by seeing her use such a 'vulgar' gesture, the biker lost track of his words as the gambler spoke loudly while walking.
"I'm not getting executed because the fake psychic has a death wish," she said calmly, without lowering her offensive gesture. Then, without missing a beat, she swung her hand over and pointed that middle finger at the wall clock hanging nearby. "It takes at least two minutes to get to the gym from here, and that's if you hurry. We've got less than three minutes left. You do the fucking math—or ask Chihiro do it for you."
Her voice grew distant as she continued toward the gym, leaving the rest of them behind. They were almost shell shocked as they collectively realized that Taeko didn't need her Celeste persona to be persuasive…
"…She's right. We're out of time." Junko begrudgingly admitted, sparing one last glance toward Hiro's door. "If we don't go now, we're dead. So let's go—".
"W-We can't! But we can't just leave him to die! We've all survived this long because we worked together!" Chihiro desperately cut in, rushing to soundproof door and banging on it. Tears began to form in her eyes as she screamed, "Hiro! You need to get out of there! You'll die! Please, just open the door!"
Her tiny hands ached with each collision against the door, but she endured it, rapping against it harder and harder with each word she spoke…until a firm grasp stopped her. Snapping her head up, she saw Junko holding onto her wrist.
"There's no more time," she said sternly…coldly. Ever ounce of warmth that Junko usually exuded was gone, replaced with an almost callous expression. "If we don't go now, the three of us will die. And I'm sorry…but I won't let that happen."
In the back of her mind, Chihiro knew that Junko was right…but she still couldn't accept it. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she futilely tried to retch her hand free of the fashionista's grasp. Acknowledging that she lacked the strength to free herself, the programmer resorted to words.
"I…I'm the leader now…and I say we should keep trying! I…I won't let anyone die…not now! Everyone…everyone'd counting on me to—uh, wha?!"
In the midst of her impassioned plea, Mondo scooped her up and hoisted her over his shoulder.
"Sorry Chihiro…but I'm not lettin' you die because of that selfish asshole!" he briefly apologized before sprinting down the hallway, Junko dashing right beside him.
"No! NO!" Chihiro shouted, pounding her fists on Mondo's back in a futile attempt to free herself. Glancing back toward Hiro's room, she reached out a hand, hoping against hope that the door would magically open and the Ultimate Clairvoyant would step out…but he never did.
