Otis
'Otis.' Ola speaks and I'm pulled from my surprise. 'Did you know?'
I only manage to stutter in response.
'Did you!?' she asks, almost yelling.
'No, I didn't' he finally manages to get out. 'Of course, I didn't.'
Ola looks shellshocked as she suddenly looks around and realises her father is missing. Before I can talk to her, or even say a word, she hurriedly walks off in the direction Jakob walked off in. It's at this point I look around and realise Eric is still here. His mouth is slightly open in disbelief as it looks like he, just as much as me, is trying to make sense and understand the information we have just been told.
'Shall we sit down?' is the first thing that he says.
'I think that would be wise' I say, and we both half-heartedly collapse into seats next to each other.
'He's not the father' Eric says. 'Jakob's not the father.'
'Yeah, at least that's what the doctor said' I reply. 'Of all the crazy things I expected to happen, this was not one of them. I mean, how can Jakob not be the father. I know mum always had her fair share of clients, shall we say, but I thought she put that behind her after she met Jakob.'
'Apparently not' says Eric. 'But, then who could it be? Until Jean wakes up, we're in the dark here.'
'Well, it wouldn't be the first time' I respond. 'Besides, the real father isn't the issue, I just hope Jakob's okay.
'Me too.' Eric replies. 'Your family is turning into some kind of Jeremy Kyle episode.'
I can't help but slightly chuckle at this and hit Eric. 'Hey I'm just saying.' Then his eyes go wide as if he's had a realisation.
'You have to tell Maeve' he tells me.
'Of course,' I say. 'Thanks for reminding me.' I start to text her, updating her in as much detail as I can everything that's happened.
Ola
'Ola, listen' he begins. 'Tell Otis and Eric that I've gone, I need to be alone for a bit. I need you to stay, make sure the baby is okay.'
'Of course I will Dad, is there anyth-' he cuts me off.
'No that'll be all.' He turns away, gets into his car and drives off.
I watch his car go out of sight before I head back into the hospital, and see Otis on his phone, texting away. Probably telling Maeve what's happened.
'Dad's gone, he needed to think.' I say blankly as I approach them.
'That's understandable' Otis says, not looking up from his phone. 'That must have been one hell of a shock.'
'That's an understatement' I say. 'He's heartbroken.'
Otis looks up this time. 'And how about you?'
'Honestly, I don't know. I just want Dad to be okay.' I say.
'Yeah, well that's-' Otis speech trails off as he stares off at something behind me…
