Sylvie was still in shock. How did this happen? Her cheeks turned pink. Well she knew how it happened but she always remembered… wait a minute.
Grabbing her cell phone, she opened up the calendar app and yup. She's been so busy between calls back to back and with Paramedicine she had forgotten about going to get a depo shot.
After the shock wears off, she gets up from the bed and walks out into the waiting room where everyone was still waiting.
Hermann sees her first.
"You okay kiddo?"
She smiles but it doesn't reach her eyes
"Yeah, just low blood sugar."
"Oh thank god. Thought it was serious."
"Glad you're okay Brett. Let's go back to the house."
A week later
Sylvie makes an appointment with her OBGYN and it was set for the morning after the next shift. She just acted normal around everyone so they wouldn't be nosy *coughs* Hermann *coughs*
After that, she texted Dylan to meet up so they could talk. No matter how hard she tried, there was no moving on from Matt Casey. He was her person, the love of her life, the ONE.
She broke up with Dylan and that night, she sat on the couch with a bowl of ice cream and had Property Brothers on. She's seen all the episodes like 100 times, maybe more.
An hour went by and she picked up her phone to notice she had gotten a text. It was from Matt.
Hey just letting you know I just got wind I'll be coming for a visit in 2 weeks. Figured you should get a heads up this time. -Matt
She sighs and texts him back.
Thanks for letting me know. -Sylvie
She walked into the firehouse for her shift and she got ready for the day. Around this time tomorrow she will be sitting in a doctor's office.
Next morning after shift, she got ready and headed over to MED. The doors whoops open and she walks in. She sees Maggie Lockwood at the nurses station. She looks up at her.
"Hey Brett. You dropping a patient off?"
"Eh no. I'm here to see Dr Asher."
"Okay. Let me page her for you."
Maggie picks up the pager and pages Asher. While Sylvie waits, she nervously plays with her hair.
Few minutes later, Hannah Asher appears. She smiles softly.
"Hey Sylvie. You ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be I guess."
Dr Asher leads her to a treatment room and tells Sylvie to get on the bed and to lay back with her shirt pulled up to below her chest.
She turns the ultrasound on and puts the gel on the probe.
"Now this will be cold, fair warning."
Asher puts the probe on Sylvie's stomach and begins to move it around and presses it slightly into her stomach to get a clear image.
"Now does the father know?"
She says as she watches the screen.
"He's out of town but he'll be back in 2 weeks."
Asher starts taking pictures of the baby and checking everything out.
"Ah so this will be a surprise for him."
Sylvie smiles a bit
"Yeah no kidding."
"What's the date of conception?"
"Oh um, April 5th." Sylvie says blushing slightly
Asher takes in the measurements and looks at Sylvie
"If I'm doing the math right it looks like your due date will be around Christmas."
"Wait really?!"
Asher smiles and removes the probe, cleaning it and Sylvie's stomach off. She moves her shirt back down.
"Yes."
"Oh my god."
Sylvie puts her hand over her mouth and lets out a few tears.
"I'll be right back with the scans."
Dr Asher leaves to go get the scans from the printer and she comes right back. She hands Sylvie the scans.
"Here you go. Drop by the nurses station to schedule your next appointment."
Sylvie leaves and makes her next appointment then she walks outside the ED staring at the scan of her and Matt's baby.
2 weeks flew by like it was nothing. This shift was the one where Matt was due for a visit and to check on the DHS thing. She reached her locker and opened it to put her things away.
When she knew she had a week left until his visit, she had mentally prepared for it unlike last time.
It wasn't just her she needed to think about. She needed to think about the baby. Could she keep the baby's existence from him? No she would never do that. Everyone knew Matt wanted to be a father and now he was going to be one in just a few months.
Closing her locker, she made her way to the briefing room. After Boden made the announcements, they all moved into the common room to eat.
Thank god she doesn't have morning sickness yet or otherwise everyone would be suspicious about her getting sick.
Not even 10 minutes later, the bells go off signaling for Truck 81. They get up and run to the rig to get their gear on and take off towards the scene.
When Truck 81 comes back, Stella finds Sylvie in the bunk room. She walks over and sits on the bed next to Sylvie's.
"Hey I have something to tell you before Casey gets here."
Sylvie looks over at her from looking at reports for Paramedicine.
"Shoot."
"I promised I would keep myself out of this but I can't. You two are the most selfless idiots I know."
"Stella!"
"He lied."
She looks confused.
"About what?"
"He isn't seeing anyone."
"Why would he lie?"
"It was about his pride. He didn't want it to be awkward between you two. Sylvie, he's still in love with you."
2 hours later, Matt walks up the apron and walks in. He noticed Kelly's rig was missing and ambo was out as well.
Hermann was pouring himself some coffee when he looked over his shoulder and spotted Casey walking in.
"Hey Casey! You're back."
Casey smiles
"Hey Hermann. How's Cindy?"
"She's great. Seeing you really lifted her spirits."
He looks around to make sure Sylvie wouldn't walk in.
"2 weeks ago, we had a scare with Sylvie.."
"What happened?"
Hermann tells him about the call. Sylvie was working on a patient when she fainted.
"She's never done that before."
Hermann nods
"Luckily it was just low blood sugar."
The rest of 51 walks in once they hear Casey's back and they all catch up.
Severide walks in and spots him. He wasn't here the last time Casey was in town. He smiles
"Hey man!"
They hug and pat each other on their backs. They catch up as well. By then, Ambo comes back from the call and Sylvie walks in with Violet.
"Hey Matt."
"Sylvie."
His voice wavers like the night at Molly's before he returned to Portland. It was his "I'm still in love with you Sylvie" voice.
They smile softly at each other.
"How are you?"
"I'm great actually."
"Good. So am I."
He was lying. Again. It's the quality he hated the most about himself. That he was selfless but he just wanted her to be happy. They talked for a little bit before he and Stella had to go to HQ for another DHS conference.
After the conference, Matt comes back to the firehouse to make lunch and to ride on Truck 81 again.
Once they cleaned up and headed back, Matt spotted Sylvie by the ambo restocking. He walks over to her.
"Hey."
Sylvie looks his way.
"Hey."
Sylvie plays with her hair nervously.
"Can we talk?"
"About what?"
She looked around to make sure no one was around. She looks at him
"I eh.. broke it off with Dylan."
"Oh I'm sorry."
Matt felt bad like this was the whole Grainger situation again.
"Not be. I thought I could make it work. I guess there's something wrong with me."
"I don't think so."
Sylvie looks elsewhere before she looks back at him.
"Uh Stella told me that you lied."
Matt looks like a deer caught in headlights. He sighs.
"Yeah I did. Didn't want it to be awkward between us."
"Is that all?"
Matt was about to reply when the bells went off. It was for ambo.
"Talk later?"
He nods and watches her leave with Violet.
Everyone was out on the apron cleaning the tools or whatnot for the next shift. Hermann was cleaning and watching them two. Capp was doing the same.
Sylvie watches as Matt walks away and somehow it felt like the baby was already 5 months along and was kicking, giving Sylvie a sign to not let their daddy leave without telling him about their existence.
"Wait Matt. I, we need you to come home."
He turns around and looks at her. Matt was thinking she meant the 51 family.
"I am after I get Ben settled in at college."
"That's not what I mean.. WE need you to come home in a week."
"Sylvie."
Sylvie starts to tear up. Matt looked at her and thought something bad happened.
"What's wrong?"
Thinking back to when Hermann told him about when Sylvie fainted on that call. Did she lie about it not being serious when it is?
"I'm pregnant."
