It was a nice spring morning and Matt had woken up while Sylvie was still asleep. He just watched her sleep for awhile and then he had gotten up to make a quick call to the Chief in Portland.
After that, he called Griffin because he sent Matt a text asking where he was. He was supposed to be back in Portland by now.
Griffin's phone rang twice before he picked up.
"Hello."
"Hey Griffin. Something came up so I'll be in Chicago a few more days."
"Would this something have anything to do with Sylvie?"
"Uh.."
Griffin smiles through the phone. He couldn't wait to tell Ben about it.
"Tell her I said hi. Bye!"
"Bye."
They hang up and Matt does some cleaning up from dinner last night. He left the ultrasound photo on the table so he walked over and picked it up.
In the bedroom, Sylvie wakes up to find the spot next to her empty. She gets up and makes her way to the kitchen. She finds him standing by the table staring at the scan.
She watches him for a moment and then she makes her presence known.
"Hey.."
He looks up from the photo and sees her standing a foot away. He makes his way to her and hugs her.
"What's this for?"
She pulls back to look at him. He looks back at her.
"I've always wanted to be a father. Now in a few months I will be. Sylvie, I never stopped loving you."
"I never stopped loving you either Matt. I tried to move on but I got bad dating advice from Violet. I should've just trusted my gut the first time and not lower my Casey standards."
"Oh really?"
"Oh come on now. Don't get cocky on me."
He raises his arms up
"Not trying to be."
Sylvie looked at him. She knew they still had one more important thing to talk about.
"Matt, what about Portland?"
Matt looks back at her. He knew they still needed to talk about this.
"Well Ben graduates in a few short weeks. Before the pregnancy news, I was going to talk to you about it. He picked a school."
He paused for a moment and then a smile slowly formed on his face.
"I had nothing to do with his decision. He picked Northwestern."
Sylvie couldn't believe what she was hearing. Did she hear him right?
"As in Northwestern here in Chicago?"
Matt wrapped his arms around her and clasped his hands behind her back.
"Yes."
He moved his hand from her back to move a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Sylvie, I should have told you at Stella and Kelly's reception that I was always coming back. I've always been a Chicago guy and I always will be."
"What about Griffin?"
"He's transferring to the University of Chicago."
"Then this means.."
"In a little over 3 weeks, we're all 3 coming home."
Sylvie couldn't believe what Matt had just told her. All 3 of her men were coming home in just a little over 3 weeks. The past 3 years weren't easy without him but she had her 51 family to help get her through it.
She felt her eyes well up with tears. She was happy.
"Oh Matt."
She kisses him and he kisses her back. He went to deepen the kiss when suddenly her stomach made a noise. They both pulled away and Matt tried not to laugh.
"Don't. The baby is just hungry."
"Well then, better get started on breakfast."
They effortlessly make breakfast and then sit down to eat.
Hermann had just walked into the house where Cindy was looking at something in a box and when Hermann got closer, he saw it was stuff from when his kids were little.
Cindy looks up from the box to her husband and says,
"I can't believe our kids are all grown now."
"Yeah. The years are just flying by like nothing."
"Well at least in a few months, we'll have a new 51 firehouse baby to spoil."
"I knew those two would get back together."
"I'm the one who told him to go after her."
"You did?"
Cindy nods
"You told me after they broke up, Sylvie wasn't herself."
"That I did."
"Those two are the most selfless people we know."
"I agree."
Kelly walks out of the bedroom shirtless to find his wife pouring coffee into a mug.
"Better save some for me."
Stella looks over at him
"Now would I ever not leave you some?"
He was now at the counter and poured some coffee for himself.
"Well there was that one time you tried to steal my coffee."
"Oh come on. That was forever ago."
Kelly just gives her a look.
"You steal it when I'm not looking."
"Damn right I do. Yours just tastes better."
Kelly raises a brow.
"Is that right?"
Stella grins
After breakfast, Matt and Sylvie were sitting on the couch watching House Hunters when a thought came into Sylvie's mind.
"Hey, why don't we go and see Amelia?"
Matt looks over at her
"You think Scott would mind?
"Of course not. I'm pretty sure Amelia would be extremely excited to see you."
"Fine by me."
Sylvie gets up and walks into the bedroom to grab her phone from the charger. Then she calls Scott. It rings three times before he picks up.
"Hey Sylvie. I'm surprised to hear from you. Is everything okay?"
"Yeah. I got a shift off and I was wondering if I could come and see Amelia?"
Scott smiles
"Sure. I'm off today as well. She actually mentioned you the other day."
"Perfect. Will be on the road within an hour. Oh and I'm bringing a surprise for her."
"Sounds good. Alright. See you then."
They hung up and Sylvie walks out then over to Matt.
"Good to go. He's off today and I kind of told him I'm bringing a surprise for her."
"And that would be?"
"You."
Sylvie squeals as Matt grabs her and lowers her down on the couch with him on top of her.
"How much time do we have?"
"An hour."
Next up: visit with Amelia and maybe a visit with Sylvie's adoptive parents.
