Chapter 8
Thirty minutes passed as the four waited for the computer to analyze one of the eggs that was pulled from Hellboy's arm. Hellboy's arm is now wrapped up and healing. When it finally beeped, they all looked at the screen. The screen showed an enlarged image of the egg.
Abe looked at the results and remarked, "The eggs are very sensitive to heat and light. They need a humid, dark environment to breed." Abe picked up one of the eggs with a tweezers and directed it towards Hellboy.
Maizie looked at Hellboy, "When you were down there, did you ever lose track of it?"
Broom, Maizie, and Abe looked at Hellboy as he reflected. "Well…Let's see…there was that one moment when I had a train on top of my head."
Broom frowned. He was worried. He spoke to Hellboy, "We can't risk it. You'll go back to the tracks tomorrow with a group of agents. Search the area; top to bottom."
Maizie nodded in agreement.
-Later that night-
Abe swam in his tank as Maizie and Broom set up the large tomes of books for Abe to read. Maizie was silent for a moment, thinking about the events of the day.
"Professor, do you really trust me to be able to do all this with Hellboy? It's barely my first day and already we're in deep shit. You don't think I'm in way over my head?"
Broom paused and looked at Maizie, "You're doing fine, my dear."
Maizie rolled her eyes, "You always say that. I don't think Hellboy likes me. At least not respect me the way he does with Clay. You sure you chose the right person for this?"
Broom smiled, "You were always like this when you were younger. So unsure of yourself and your abilities."
"Broom…"
Broom sighed, "I chose you for a reason."
"But-"
"I'm dying."
Maizie was stunned. She looked over to Abe in his tank. He gave her a small nod of confirmation. She looked back to Broom and she opened her mouth but couldn't find the words. Broom set his hands on her shoulders.
"As a father, I worry about him. I'm sure, as you recall, there's often a knight in medieval stories. A knight whose inexperienced but pure of heart," Broom softly spoke.
Maizie scoffed, "Oh please. I'm not pure of heart. I'm not one of King Arthur's knights. You don't know-" She stopped before she said anything more.
Broom raised an eyebrow as Maizie looked away.
"Look, I chose you for a reason. I trained you. I trust you. All I ask of you is to stand next to him with courage. Be there for him when I'm gone." Broom said. He looked into her eyes. "Help him find himself, who he must be. He was born a demon…between you and Abe, you will help him be a man."
