After that explosive new information Broom dropped on her, Maizie needed a moment alone. She left Broom and Abe behind in the library and found her new room. She spotted her bags at the foot of the bed and sighed. She didn't have the energy to unpack it. She went straight to her bed and flopped onto it. She gathered the pillow under her chin and closed her eyes. It was one hell of a long day.

She thought back to the moment she almost spilled a secret to Broom. Maizie wondered if she should spill it. After Broom had completed her training when she was young, she had gone into a place where it was no longer a home. She wished she had stayed with Broom instead. She buried her head into her pillow, erasing those childish thoughts.

An image of a woman flittered through her head.

She lifted her head.

Who was that woman Hellboy was with?

Curiosity got the best of her, and she got up. She left the room and tracked down the archive. She picked out a computer station, sat down, and turned it on. As she searched through it, pictures of a young Hellboy flickered through.

She wondered if she could've had a better life with Broom growing up.

An old issue of the Enquirer distracted her. The headline in bold, ARSON SUSPECT NOW WORKING FOR SECRET GOVERNMENT AGENCY.

She clicked on it and a photo of the woman she was looking for popped up. A connecting article blinked, and she clicked on it. A photo of a young girl and a burned down building-TRAGIC EXPLOSION.

She clicked the next article. It was an interview with a woman named Elizabeth Sherman. A BPRD interview. Her eyes widened a bit as she noted that this woman had a power too.

Pyrokinetic

There was an audio file and once she clicked it, she listened.

"I don't like the term 'Firestarter.' I just don't. And 'Pyrokinesis' sounds like psychosis or something. I dunno—maybe that's right. Not being able to let go…Scary. Sometimes you hear so-and-so lost control and just exploded." The woman said. She looked into the camera. "They're lucky it isn't true. With me…it is."

Maizie sat back. She thought for a moment about what she had learned. If Broom recruited her to be Hellboy's caretaker…his protector…then maybe she needed to know more about this woman and her connection to Hellboy. She decided right then that she would go talk to Broom. But she would wait until the next day. She was tired and Broom probably was too. She shut everything down before she left for her room.

-The next morning—

"Are you kidding me?"

Clay glanced up at her. He had pushed a cart full of dozens of pancakes, bacon, and toast towards her.

"Nope."

"I am not his food deliverer. I wasn't picked to deliver his breakfast. Am I supposed to hand feed him?" Maizie asked.

Clay rolled his eyes, "Of course not. You were picked to be his caretaker…so take care of him."

He left her behind. She stared at his back until he disappeared. She sighed and grabbed the handles of the cart and found her way to Hellboy's room. She knocked the door before she opened it. Hellboy's voice echoed through the room.

"How many buildings does she have to burn? She belongs here!" Hellboy yelled.

Broom sighed, standing with his hands on his walking stick. "That's not how she feels. She may never feel it."

Maizie pushed the cart into the room and stood beside it listening to the conversation. They didn't notice her come in.

"It's her choice…she's human-" Broom began.

Hellboy interrupted his father, "Oh, as opposed to…?"

Broom was quiet. He had no response for him. Hellboy, angry, stomped over to his mirror and began sanding down his horns. He finally noticed Maizie and the cart.

"Mmh…pamcakes…we're going out," Hellboy said. He wanted the pancakes as they were his favorites, but he also wanted to do something else.

Maizie stepped up to Broom, "Professor, are you talking about Elizabet-"

Hellboy whirled around, pointing the sander at Maizie, "Think twice before you-"

Maizie looked at him, "I'm talking. Shut up."

Hellboy pulled back speechless. No one ever spoke to him like that. Not even Clay.

Broom hid a smile behind a hand. He nodded to Maizie, "Elizabeth Sherman. Yes. There was an unfortunate incident last night."

"What happened?"

"She burned the building she was residing in."

Maizie looked down then to Hellboy. She looked back to Broom.

"If you want her back here, I can help. Talk to her…woman-to-woman," Maizie offered.

Hellboy didn't even try to hide his laugh as he spoke, "What makes you think you can convince her to come back? You landed this "cushy" job pushing pamcakes…what can you do that can bring her back?"

She looked at Hellboy, "Your father may have trained me with my powers, but I was trained in hostage negotiations. I'm pretty good at my job."

She turned away towards the door. Pausing for a moment, she turned back.

"Also…I'm not your waitress. You can get your own food."
