Lon'qu: *pant* ...Enough.
Link: ...You yield?
Lon'qu: ...No... I merely suggest we consider this bout a draw. With how infrequently we manage to land clean strikes on each other, I fear it will take hours before this battle draws to a proper close.
Link: ...Yeah, that's fine... Thanks for the practice.
Lon'qu: Likewise.
Link: ...I gotta say... I've never had so much trouble finding an opening before. You're probably the most agile opponent I've fought... Well... except for one other...
Lon'qu: And who would that be?
Link: He isn't really a... typical swordsman... Don't take this as an insult, but... it's not possible for you to give me as much trouble as he did.
Lon'qu: ...Hmph. As for my technique, I owe it all to my mentor, Khan Basilio.
Link: That big guy, huh? It's obvious he's strong... but with how quick you are, I... didn't expect him to be your mentor of all people.
Lon'qu: He paints a picture of joviality and carelessness. Those who truly know the man beneath all that bluster, however, understand that he only shows his true colors when the situation requires it.
Link: ...Sounds like he'd make for a good opponent.
Lon'qu: That's a fight I'd pay to see.
Link: ...
Lon'qu: And what of you, so-called 'hero'?
Link: Hmm?
Lon'qu: Your defense is nearly unbreakable... No weaknesses to speak of. I've never clashed steel with someone quite like you. So, I must ask... how did you manage to hone such a skill?
Link: No weaknesses, huh?... If I really lack any, it's only because I was... forced to find those weaknesses and exploit them myself.
Lon'qu: ...Explain.
Link: The swordsman I brought up earlier? He's the one responsible.
Lon'qu: Yes, the opponent that I could never hope to measure up to... or so you say.
Link: Again, that's not a slight against your abilities. You could never provide the same challenge because my opponent was... me.
Lon'qu: ...You fought yourself? Do you take me for a fool?
Link: Not at all. You probably think I'm speaking nonsense, but I am telling the truth. It was... some ancient, sinister magic that gave life to my own shadow... and I was forced to fight a near exact copy of myself in a fight to the death.
Lon'qu: Your own shadow?
Link: ...Saying that I myself am the strongest opponent I've ever gone up against may sound like arrogance, but... imagine what it would be like to duel someone that possesses the same habits, strengths, weapons, build, and cunning... As I said, I was forced to analyze my own weaknesses in the heat of battle and capitalize on them... all while my life was on the line.
Lon'qu: ...That sounds like hell.
Link: Heh, yeah, that's one way to put it. Fighting against my mirror image... That's the closest I've ever come to death, but as you've seen, that fight gave me crucial insight into my own shortcomings.
Lon'qu: ...Funny... What brings us closest to death's door often gives us the strength to overcome what we face after.

Lon'qu: Tch! Unbelievable...
Link: Heh... Something frustrating you, Lon'qu?
Lon'qu: How do put so much distance between us with a single sidestep? Gods, it's as if you could cover more ground doing that rather than sprinting.
Link: Uh... I guess you're not wrong...
Lon'qu: Let us end things here. I have other matters I must see to before the day is over.
Link: Before you go... do you mind if I ask you something... personal?
Lon'qu: ...Ask and perhaps I will answer...
Link: When we first started sparring, you made a comment about near-death experiences... I feared that might be something you wouldn't want to bring up, and I won't bother you further if you say no... but I'm curious what you went through... What you gained from it and what you lost.
Lon'qu: That memory is extremely personal... It causes me pain that persists to this day in the form of crippling anxiety and continual nightmares.
Link: I understand... Good sparring, then... I'll see you next-
Lon'qu: However... seeing as you also shared with me the story of you at your weakest, I will deign to share my own.
Link: ...You're sure? I don't want to cause you any distress over this.
Lon'qu: I would not make such an offer lightly... and besides... You, Link, I find more pleasing to talk with when compared to the other... characters... in this army.
Link: Oh... I'm glad you think so.
Lon'qu: The memory that haunts me is a simple one. I was in love with a girl. The two of us were ambushed by bandits. Despite doing all I could to protect her, she lost her life that day... and I nearly lost mine... That's all there is to say.
Link: ...Sorry to hear that...
Lon'qu: Do not misunderstand; This tragedy may have left scars on me that have yet to fade, but I will not accept pity from you.
Link: ...Of course. Lasting trauma from a memory like that is to be expected. I won't treat you differently because of it.
Lon'qu: ...Good.
Link: ...In spite of what you lost... would you say you've also gained strength from this hardship?
Lon'qu: Ke'ri's death... was the catalyst for my journey to Ferox. It was my motivation for training under Khan Basilio and becoming the swordsman that I am... So, yes, I have gained strength... Yet, a glaring deficiency has taken root as well.
Link: Your fear of women?
Lon'qu: Correct... Because I failed to save her life, I cannot bear to grow close to another.
Link: ...I understand.
Lon'qu: Have I answered your question, then?
Link: Yeah... Thanks for trusting me with your past... and I promise that I'll keep it to myself. I wish I could help you with your aversion, but... I get the feeling that you'd rather deal with it yourself, yeah?
Lon'qu: Right, again. I appreciate that you are able to respect my personal space... *sigh* The others in this army could learn a thing or two from you.

Lon'qu: ...Link.
Link: ...Hey, Lon'qu... What's, uh... What's up?
Lon'qu: I wish to eat my meal in the company of a... friend. I have chosen you as that friend. Is this acceptable?
Link: ...Yeah, that's... fine. I'm a little surprised to see you here, actually. Don't you usually eat by yourself?
Lon'qu: Yes... I do. I would continue to do so, if not for the Ylissian princess insisting that I... 'hang out with some buddies and talk about guy things'... Apparently I do not socialize enough to meet her standards.
Link: Oh... Well, I don't mind... I'm not the most talkative person around, though...
Lon'qu: Save your breath. You needn't force a discussion on my behalf. As long as an effort is made on my end, the pestering will stop.
Link: ...All right.
Lon'qu: To be clear... the reason I chose to sit here is because you are one of the few in this group who recognize the value of silence. If I am forced to share another's company, then you are among the more adequate options.
Link: Thanks... I think?
Lon'qu: Take the compliment however you please.
Link: I feel the same way when it comes to the Shepherds... They're great people... Some of the best friends I've ever had... Being a 'legendary hero', though... That reputation brings me so much attention. It's difficult to get away from them, sometimes.
Lon'qu: Tch... You preach to the choir. The very moment one hears about my aversion to women, they decide, then and there, that fixing my problem is more important than all else.
Link: I can see that getting exhausting very quickly.
Lon'qu: That would be putting it mildly. Some women have tried to 'cure' my fear by forcing themselves on me, grabbing my arms, invading my space... As if that will be of any help.
Link they know the truth behind your fear?... That you react that way because of a traumatic memory?
Lon'qu: Most of them do not, I'd wager. In that regard, I suppose part of the blame falls on me for keeping that information private... Yet, I also do not feel that an explanation is necessary. No matter the reason, my boundaries should be respected... End of story.
Link: ... I agree.
Lon'qu: That blasted scholar... She has even taken on my fear as some sort of academic study... She once filled my tent with statues of women just to see how I'd react... It is infuriating.
Link: Want me to help you? Maybe I could convince these people to stop bothering you.
Lon'qu: There is no need. This is my problem, and I will handle it. In fact, that is another reason why I find you agreeable to be around. You do not attempt to fix my issues or gawk at me like some animal... I would thank you for that.
Link: Hmm... Well, I didn't really do anything, but... I'm happy to hear it.
Lon'qu: Precisely. You didn't do anything... and for some people to get along, nothing needs to be done.
Link: ...Huh... Well said...
Lon'qu: ...
Link: ...
Lon'qu: ...
Link: ...When you're finished eating... do you wanna get some sparring in? I've got a new weapon I'd like to try against you.
Lon'qu: Something other than a sword?
Link: No, it is a sword. It's a... uh... unique one, for sure. Check it out...
Lon'qu: What in blazes...?
Link: I have a difficult time landing any hits on you, so... I thought maybe I'd try a sword with a little more reach.
Lon'qu: Tch... 'A sword with a little more reach' you say... That's larger than any greatsword I've ever seen. How did you even carry that on you without me noticing? Furthermore, where did you find a blade of that size?
Link: I know a guy... er, Goron...
A/N:
I try to include as many traits of the Awakening characters into their respective chapters as I can. Lon'qu's fear of women was something that I didn't want to pass on, but I had trouble including it in a way that I found natural. Not super pleased with this whole chapter, but it's all I got.
Maybe it doesn't need clarifying, I don't know, but the line about sidestepping is just a reference to OoT speed running and how I've seen people use sidestepping to travel faster than running at times.
