Laurent: Pardon me, Link. May I have a word?

Link: ...Sure, Laurent... What's up?

Laurent: I simply must commend you for your efforts. The amount of time in which I've had to observe you is not sufficient for my liking, but even so, you have made it crystal clear that you are exemplary. Your ability to complete objectives in an efficient manner, your willingness to follow orders, and your routine of rising to the occasion when others falter... I award you full marks.

Link: ..."Full marks" means a perfect score, yeah?... That can't be right, though... A perceptive guy like you? Aren't you already aware of where I fall short?

Laurent: Mmm... You are not incorrect. With regard to teamwork, you fail to meet our standards. Clear communication, or to be more precise, any vocalization in battle at all would be a welcome improvement on your end... However! These issues are minor when viewing the larger picture. You, Link, are the ideal soldier. We would all benefit from emulating your example.

Link: ...Geez, thanks... That's a pretty big compliment.

Laurent: Ah, how foolish of me. I've neglected my purpose in seeking you out. I did not intend to misuse your time by lavishing you with adulation. Forgive me.

Link: ...It's all good... You can go on.

Laurent: My thanks. You see, I've come before you to inquire about your distinctive gear.

Link: Uh... What gear? The Master Sword?

Laurent: I am privy to the blade's role in Hyrule's liberation. That is not what I am referring to. No, I speak of other tools, such as your unique, reflective shield. Seemingly, it has the capability to reflect and even absorb magic spells.

Link: ...Oh, you mean the mirror shield...

Laurent: My question is a straightforward one; what materials must I provide a blacksmith with to produce more shields of this kind?

Link: ...No clue.

Laurent: N-No clue, you say? But how can that be? You mean to suggest that you have no knowledge of the shield's origins?

Link: Yeah... Exactly... I found it inside a treasure chest within the spirit temple... That's all I know about it.

Laurent: I see. That is disheartening, yet understandable. Moving on, then, I also seek information about your footwear.

Link: ...My footwear?... I have a few different kinds that I use, so you'll have to be specific.

Laurent: Of course. I am intrigued by the boots that grant you dominion over the sky and wind. To my uninformed mind, it appears as though you are flying, or walking on air, to be more accurate.

Link: So... My hover boots...

Laurent: If there is any hope of replicating these items, I graciously ask that you grant me the means, Link. Think of the tactical advantage the Shepherds would gain from such an ability! We might send assassins over whole platoons of enemy soldiers and eliminate the opposing general in a flash. We could use these boots to circumvent cumbersome terrain that would typically slow us to a crawl. The possibilities are limitless!

Link: ...First of all, they don't work like that. They can only cover a short distance before you need to touch solid ground again... The bigger problem is that I also found these boots inside a treasure chest, so... I don't know how they're made.

Laurent: Egads... Is Hyrule truly this fantastical land where sacred relics that bend the laws of the world can be found lying around for any ordinary wanderer to claim?

Link: Well... Yeah, I guess there's some truth to that.

Laurent: Salutations, Link. Could I request another moment of your time?

Link: ...All right, I'm not busy... Here to check out more of my stuff?

Laurent: Indeed. Once again, my aim is that by inquiring into your otherworldly weaponry, we may one day replicate them. With stronger tools come greater chances of victory and, if all goes to plan, a swift end to this continued bloodshed.

Link: ...Makes sense... I'll help however I can.

Laurent: Much appreciated.

Link: So... what's caught your eye this time?

Laurent: A rather unorthodox piece of machinery. It is a device consisting of a sizable chain and a piercing hook. That is what it appears to be, at least.

Link: You're talking about the hookshot... It's one of my more unusual tools, I agree.

Laurent: Surely you must have assembled it yourself or had it custom-made with the help of another, yes? I cannot fathom how one would simply stumble upon such an odd item by chance.

Link: Nah, I didn't make it. A ghost gave it to me.

Laurent: ...This is a jest, correct? I admit, I did not take you for the type, Link.

Link: I think ghosts are more common in Hyrule... See, I found the spirit of this cemetery gravedigger, and he challenged me to race... After I won, he gave me the hookshot as a prize.

Laurent: To regale me with a ludicrous story... I fear as though I am being mocked... A racing competition? Against the soul of one departed? And I am expected to believe that that is how you obtained the object in question?

Link: Look, Laurent... Hyrule's weird... That's all I can say.

Laurent: Should I accept your fanciful tale as factual, then yes, I concur.

Link: But you know... your world can be pretty weird, too.

Laurent: "Weird" in what fashion?

Link: Well... You've got plenty of strange stuff here that Hyrule doesn't... Flying horses... The Risen... Thousand-year-old dragons that look like children... A conqueror that looks like a lobster... Kellam...

Laurent: Hah! True enough. Seeing as how I have never before visited Hyrule, I now realize that I lack the perspective that you possess. Most likely, these two lands are both odd in their own ways.

Link: They certainly are... Anyway, I'm sorry, but I can't make you another hookshot. I'd have no idea where to even begin.

Laurent: Allow me to move on to the next request, then.

Link: ...Yeah?

Laurent: At times, you wield a colossal greatsword. One much larger than any I have ever laid eyes upon. Were you involved in the creation of this blade?

Link: Nope... There's no way you'll be able to replicate that sword... It was forged by Biggoron, a master blacksmith the size of a mountain, and it took him three days of non-stop work to finish the task... Here, you can take a look at it.

Laurent: Mmm, it is assuredly a magnificent display of handiwork. It must have cost you a fortune to fund such a commission, yes?

Link: Actually, no... I just had to make a few deals and trade a few items... In the end, all I gave him was some eye drops, and he said we were even.

Laurent: I-Impossible... A sword of this caliber? Given away freely for a bottle of eye drops? I... I fail to understand...

Link: Maybe it's best if you don't think about it... It's not like we'd be able to make another blade like it anyway.

Laurent: *sigh* Yes, yes, of course... I was aware of your connections to the higher powers, Link, but even so, I did not anticipate that your arsenal would be so one-of-a-kind. Perhaps I will shift my focus to learning your spells rather than recreating your weapons. As a practiced mage, I am more confident in this approach.

Link: You want to learn my spells?... I, uh... I don't think that's gonna work out for you...

A-Support

Laurent: Gah... How exasperating... Despite performing the correct steps in a near identical fashion, I cannot conjure Din's Fire as you are able to, Link. What could be the issue?

Link: I told you... You've got no chance.

Laurent: No, I refuse to accept this outcome! There must be something that I'm missing... Please, show me how you perform the spell once more! My movements must be off. That is the only explanation.

Link: That's not it... You're doing everything right, believe me.

Laurent: Then why-

Link: I know you don't wanna hear it, but I'll say it again... I only know this magic because I received the blessings of the great fairies... Without those blessings, I don't think it's possible for you to learn these spells at all.

Laurent: 'The blessings of great fairies'? My rational mind scoffs at such a nonsensical statement, but... *sigh* I know you quite well at this point, Link. You are a man of bizarre surprises. Even more so, you are a man of honesty. I know at my core that you are correct, I am simply having trouble accepting it.

Link: ...I mean, I get it... You want to learn these spells and then teach them to the rest of the Shepherds, right?

Laurent: Precisely. The destructive power of Din's Fire... The unparalleled protection that Nayru's Love provides... and, of course, Farore's Wind, which would serve as even more efficient warp magic... Widespread access to any of these techniques would be a monumental boon for this army.

Link: I hear you, but that's just not happening... You gotta be realistic about this, you know?

Laurent: *ahem* Right you are, my comrade. As one of the Shepherd's greatest minds, I cannot allow myself to stubbornly fuss over a single plan that has failed to pan out. I must move onward.

Link: There you go. That's the attitude of yours that I respect so much.

Laurent: Hmm? You respect my attitude?

Link: ...Well, yeah... You put so much time and effort into keeping this army running smoothly. Makes me feel lazy when I spend some days just lounging around in a forest...

Laurent: Link, you are anything but lazy. Do not be so unforgiving toward yourself.

Link: It's the truth... You're proactive and thorough in everything you do... You're a major asset to our cause, and we're lucky to have you here, Laurent.

Laurent: Why, I... Thank you for saying so. There are many in this army who find my methods to be overly meticulous. Some might go so far as to label me a "nuisance"... Severa prefers the term "pain in the ass", vulgar as it is.

Link: They don't realize the impact that you have... All the preparation you do? All the inventory you take, and soldiers that you check up on?... That stuff keeps us from losing lives in battle. If they understood that, they wouldn't call you names.

Laurent: You truly believe that to be so?

Link: I see it with my own eyes... Heck, always being prepared was something that I had trouble with back in Hyrule. If I had taken my mission seriously, I would've had a fairy in each of my four bottles at all times... I hardly ever did, though... I walked into some of those first dungeons thinking that I was invincible... because the hero always wins, right?

Laurent: If only that were true. The day I heard that my parents fell in battle was the day I learned that even heroes are not unfailing. They are human and vulnerable. They were a constant pillar of support in my life, and then, one misstep later, they suddenly were not.

Link: I went through a few brushes with death before I learned that lesson... If I was more like you, maybe I could have avoided some of that pain... So, what I'm saying is; don't doubt yourself. You're doing the right thing.

Laurent: I very much appreciate your thoughtful words, Link. My resolve has been shaken in the past, but you have emboldened me to stand firm and stay the course.

Link: ...Good.

Laurent: Though my acquisition of your goddess spells proved fruitless, there are other inquiries I have yet to explore. For one, the "fierce deity mask", as you call it.

Link: Laurent, that thing's dangerous... Why are you interested in it?

Laurent: Please, lend it to me, my friend. For the benefit of the Shepherds, we must see what powers I am granted while under its influence.

Link: ...Absolutely not.

Laurent: But you have yet to even give me a chance! We agreed that my meticulousness was an asset, did we not? We must explore all avenues for success!... L-Link? Why are you walking away?

A/N:

I didn't have a ton of ideas for this chapter. While I don't mind Laurent, Miriel is more fun to write because of how zany and extreme her character traits are. Her son shares a lot of those traits (smart, serious, socially clueless) but to a lesser degree, which makes for less enjoyable interactions imo.
