It was a brand new day for Eira, who will officially start her new role as a caretaker of a Khun family's child. It wasn't exactly uncommon for a maid like her to be appointed to be a babysitter, just the unusual thing was the one who appointed her was none other that the head of Khun family, Khun Eduan.
Khun Eduan was practically infamous for his lewdness, having the most wives among the family heads. As such, his number of children are vast.
Eira pity the child. Having no mother to feed her, her father was also known as an apathetic man towards his children. So why now did he chose to be so attentive? No one believed her when she said Khun Eduan himself ordered her.
It was raining cats and dogs when she reached the room specified for the toddler. Seeing the child was alone, Eira thought the child was sleeping until she reached her cradle.
"You really doesn't cry much..", Eira reached the baby's cheek, stroking the plump surface.
The child continue to stare at Eira, as if she really understood what the maid was saying.
"Now that I think about it, what was your name?"
But remembering the child had no guardian before, Eira settled on thinking that she had no name. The maid hesitated to give her a name herself, afraid of what the father would think.
"Perhaps I should ask Sir Eduan later?"
Yesterday's event was still fresh in Eira's mind. She wondered where did her courage comes from to raise her voice against a family head. The head of Khun family on top of that.
"But still, there's no way I could let him hold you like that... That man really lacks common sense...", Eira complained as she held the small body in her arm. "Now this is how you hold a baby!"
"Excuse me?"
"Eeeeekkk!!"
Eira turned around, and bowed with the child still in her arm.
"I'm sorry sir! I didn't mean it! Really!"
"Um, miss?"
Eira expected a grumpy looking Eduan standing before her, but instead a handsome young man bashfully faces her with an awkward smile.
"I... um... I am the retainer assigned for the little miss from today on. My name is Miru.", the brunette introduced himself.
It wasn't a lie that Eira was baffled by the handsome feature the male had, but what shocked her even more was the fact that a personal retainer assigned for the child in her arms. For a toddler barely one year old?!
"My... my name is Eira. I am the maid for the young miss here."
The awkward silence engulfed the two as they contemplate on what to talk about, not daring to look at each other in the eyes.
"Ah.. uh au.."
The two turned towards the child, now reaching her hand towards the newly arrived retainer, as if welcoming him.
Automatically, the two smiled before comfortably engaging into a conversation. Eira happily showed Miru around the room, as she had organized the room herself last night before she went to sleep.
"Now that I think about it, what is the name of young miss?", Miru asked holding one of the tiny hands.
"Well, about that.."
Eira once again explained the situation of the child in her arms, now staring blankly at Eira.
"I see. I myself was surprised when Sir Eduan ordered me this morning.", Miru responded, now also wearing the same troubled expression as Eira.
"How's the kid?"
Both of them flinched, as they turned towards the new source of voice.
"Sir Eduan!"
"She's doing fine, sir.", Miru who recovered first, answered for the both of them.
"Wah uh ua auuu..."
As if noticing her father had come in, the toddler struggled in Eira's arms, indicating that it felt uncomfortable.
"What's wrong, miss?", Eira cooed, hoping to soothe the baby down to avoid any incoming trouble. Which she absolutely wants to avoid. Absolutely.
"What's with her then?", Eduan asks, getting impatient.
Both of the servant gulped, fearing what was to come until Eira blurted out:
"She.. she's happy to see her father, sir!"
Miru literally face palmed with Eira's panic outburst.
'There's no way he's going to believe that!'
"..."
The silence choked the two as they they waited for their own predicament, at the same time not daring to breathe.
"Really? Gimme her then.", Eduan replied, outstretching his arms with an unreadable expression, expecting to receive his daughter.
"Ha..happily, sir!"
Miru was very relieved that he was able to see another day, turning to Eira with a smile. But Miru was taken aback by Eira's hesitant expression that reads 'I don't want to hand her over!'.
"Miss Eira?"
"Excuse me, sir. But I believe that one should hold a child gently to avoid discomfort for them...", Eira started, before realizing what she said.
' What is she saying?!!'-Miru
'I'm dead. Totally dead. Why did I say that?'-Eira
Miru frantically search for an excuse to avoid the man's wrath while nudging Eira. "I'm sorry, sir! It seems Miss Eira is unwell-"
"I just have to hold her properly, then?"
For the many time that day, both Eira and Miru were taken aback.
Khun Eduan? Holding a toddler? That fact is enough to make they think that the world is ending.
"Just give me the kid. I just have to hold her like the maid did, right?", getting more impatient, Eduan further his arms to take the child.
"Ah, yes sir.."
Reluctantly, Eira carefully passed the child onto Eduan's arms, making sure to not drop her.
The now silent child, actually understood what happened.
At first, she was scared, seeing her so-called father enter the room, but later settled down, fearing the two servants might get killed because of her. Will they actually? She's not very sure herself.
But in fact, she did understand what the grown-ups were saying. She also grasped the fact that her father were not the best father to have around (probably the worst), and that she had no mother.
During yesterday's event, she merely played around with Eduan's bangs because she was fascinated by it and no more than that. It was later when she found out that man was actually her father, courtesy of gossipping maids tending to her.
A baby outside, an adult inside.
Now she wasn't even sure how to react. Sure, it's not like she will die in his arms. (Right?) Even Eduan now are actually holding her in his arms gently.
"She's small. What did she even eat anyway?", Eduan turned to Eira.
"She.. she's barely one year old, sir. I'm sure she will grow splendidly later."
Humming in understandmend, Eduan continue to inspect the child that interests him greatly.
"I wonder if she's strong like me."
"Eh? Sir?!"
Sparks of electricity surrounded Eduan, with the intention of 'testing' her.
Eira covered her eyes, not wanting to witness a death scene and Miru's already praying to Jahad or whatsoever to save the child from an unfair early death by her own father.
But the child only smiled. Smiling warmly at her father with no cuts nor burns.
"This child...", Eduan stared at the smiling toddler, still processing the fact that she survived his sparks.
His sparks.
He was sure that she may be injured or burned, or even death. Even a high ranker found it difficult to survive it. But the innocent smile says otherwise, indicating that the child is definitely not in any pain.
"Uh ah?"
Silently setting her down, Eduan proceed to exit the room, Miru and Eira unable to witness his expression.
"Wait, sir!", Eira called, remembering her dilemma before Eduan came. "Actually, this child still has no name. So I was wondering if you would..."
"...Amelina."
"Yes?"
"Her name. It's Khun Amelina.", Eduan repeated, without looking back before leaving.
Eira and Miru looked at each other, before smiled in excitement.
"Thank you, sir!"
From the point of view of the baby, now named Khun Amelina, she was quite sure that she was supposed to be dead. Like, scorched to death.
She wasn't sure how she survived the sparks, but the smile was supposed to be an 'I-don't-want-to-leave-this-world-with-regrets' smile.
Sure, she was relieved that she gets to live another moment. But she didn't understand how she was still alive and how long will this moment ensues.
"I'm glad, miss. Not only you have a name now, but it seems that Sir Eduan may have taken a like on you!", Eira squealed, all the while feeding her.
'Are you telling me to be happy with a so-called father who just attemped a murder on me?!', Amelina tried her best to give Eira an 'are-you-serious' look but got ignored instead.
"It was truly surprising when Sir Eduan himself gave you a name. Usually he couldn't care less about a child of his.", Miru, who looked a lot more relaxed than the first moment he arrived at the room exclaimed giddily beside Eira.
'Excuse me? That psycho intended to kill me! I know you two think so too!', and still, Amelina's silent protests were unheard.
"Really, I'm just glad that you're okay, miss... You're already pitiful enough without a mother to turn to, just thinking that you might.."
Eira croaked as her words turned into sobs. Miru didn't waste any time on rubbing the maid's back, attempting to comfort her.
Amelina watched the scene before her unfolds, with a pang of guilt and sorrow.
'Well, I guess... Thank you... For standing up for me...'
"Ei.. ahh."
Eira's glistening eyes looked to the child, now reaching out a tiny hand towards her.
"Ei.. ah!"
Chuckling, Miru picked Amelina up, bringing the child to the still crying Eira on the floor.
"Amelina seems to be calling out for you. Perhaps she understood you?"
Amelina reached out a hand towards Eira, who took it with both hands.
"I swear, miss. I'll take good care of you, no matter what happens.", Eira pledged, looking straight at Amelina in the eyes.
With this, Miru smiled.
"Me too, miss. Honestly at first, I was reluctant for my new post here, but after seeing Sir Eduan today, perhaps you are the factor that can change him.", Miru added, clenching his holds around Amelina.
The comfortable silence that came after engulf the three, with only the sound of raindrops in between.
'You both, might be the best parents I would ever have.'
