Shadow Trailer
- 9 years later -
Every year, the System gives me a special boss-only dungeon after finals week at Signal. The rewards varied every year, with the first being a pair of black boots optimized for free running, the next being a few ingots of Stygian Iron that I used to craft the hidden blade portion of my weapon with the rest being composed of meteoric iron, the next being a pair of sports sunglasses and a pair of gloves that link to my gauntlets and act as smart scopes and make their mechashifts easier to control, and last year I got a black half mask with an internal respirator built in to it. Between the yearly drops and what I had made in dungeons throughout the years, I had managed to nearly complete my combat outfit to my not-too-demanding standards. So I was honestly looking forward to whatever the system had in store for me this year. 'Enter Finals Dungeon'

SHADOW DRAGON'S LAIR
Good Luck on your exam, Host]
I rolled my eyes at the song the system chose. Somewhere along the line, the System seemed to decide that this song would be my "theme song," so to speak. This amused Neo to no end when, every—and I do mean every—time I had a match during combat class, the system played that song. It turns out that anyone I partied with got access to certain aspects of the system. And the aspect that Neo and my pseudo-sisters seemed to like using the most after discovering it was the system's ability to play any song I had ever heard. Which also led to them learning about my two extra sets of memories, both of which had been slowly fading or merging with experiences in this world.
Looking around myself, I see a cliff face overlooking a massive ravine. Creeping across a jagged outcropping, I crouch at the edge to get a good view of my surroundings
A wide smile spreads unbidden across my face as I see the draconic form of my opponent. Its body was snake-like, save for the four powerful legs curled underneath it and the two leathery wings, seemingly too big for its body, draped along the ground. The black scales seemed to blend into any shadows they touched, and even where no shadows fell, the scales seemed to emit a black mist, almost as if they were shadows themselves.
'Guess that's where the name comes from,' I thought to myself before checking its status. 'Observe'

Young Adult Shadow Dragon
LV.17
HP 5000/5000
A young dragon just old enough to have left its hatching ground but not old enough to have yet found a mate. While it may not have much of a horde, it will fight viciously to protect what it has acquired. Shadows are its playground; given the chance, it will slip into the shadows and ambush its prey. ]
As quietly as I can, I flick my bracers straight into their third form. The two twin ebony machetes each had a double-curved blade on one side and jagged barbs on the other. Trailing from the pommel was my grapple line, composed of dust-conductive wire braided and woven to withstand the weight it experienced whenever the gravity dust embedded into the grips of my daggers would activate. As much as I had trained and mastered using my hidden blades before getting to Signal, I had been made painfully aware of how ineffective they were against larger grimm and in open combat.
Knowing exactly how pointless it is to try to win a battle of sneak attacks with a creature made of literal shadows, I slowly make my way to a rocky outcropping jutting out over my prey. Spreading my arms out on either side of me, I leapt from the outcropping, as my assassin memories had taught me years ago. Charging up the gravity dust embedded into my blades handles, I hold the left blade behind my back to slow my fall and throw the other down as hard as I can at my unsuspecting enemy. Its artificial weight accelerates it many times faster than I could possibly throw it on its own. As it plummets toward the shadowy beast, my grapple wire trails after it until, Thwump, it embeds itself in the dragon's neck.
"Rooooooaaaaaaaar!" It cries out in agony as it is forcefully awakened from its sleep.
Wasting no time, I activated the lightning dust crystal embedded in my right gauntlet, eliciting another thundering cry of agony from my foe. Bringing my left blade out in front of me, I haul in on my right grappling line and come crashing down on top of the beast's neck.
Keeping the electricity flowing through my still embedded right blade, I wrench my left out of the dragon's neck, pulling bits of skin, flesh, and blood out with the serrated edge at the same time. I can just see the barest hint of white bone peeking out from deep within the gaping wound as I begin to hack and slash at the exposed flesh. More and more of the thrashing lizard's vertebrae were exposed with each slash, accompanied as it were by sprays of gore. Finally, seeing a gap in the spinal column, I stopped the flow of electricity coming from my right blade. Then, yanking it out from where it had been embedded, I sank both of my blades into the exposed disk and activated the lightning dust crystals embedded in each of my gauntlets.
The dragon's whole body twitches and shakes as it lets out a keening roar. Then, with two sequential pops, its eyes burst, and it fell still at last. Climbing down from my kill, I retract my blades to their dormant form and watch as the dragon dissolves into a shadowy mist, leaving behind a large wooden chest. As I walk over to it, I see a new System Message

"Yes," I say. The chest pops open, and out spills what is possibly the weirdest collection of loot that I have ever gotten. There's a roll of treated black leather that seems to emit a fine mist of pure shadow, two take-out containers, one smaller than the other, and two small boxes of dust.
"Observe," I say, looking at this small pile of loot.

Gravity Dust: Powder(medium vial)*10]
Grimacing slightly at what I'm about to do, I open up the smaller takeout container and see an almost bite-sized piece of slightly burnt flesh with ragged edges. I pinch my nose and hold my breath, then pop the piece of dragon heart into my mouth. Chewing rapidly, I swallow it down as soon as I can. "That wasn't so bad," I mutter. "It tasted a little gamy, though."

I groan as over half a century's worth of memories of the use of the two skills are imprinted on my brain. "I think I'd rather just have had to figure it out on my own," I murmur at the system. After putting all my loot in my inventory, I walked through the swirling portal of shadows that had appeared. There to greet me on the other side is Tai.
"How'd it go?" He asks.
"Pretty good," I reply. "Got a drop that would be great for dinner. Could I invite Neo and her Mom over?" I ask, handing him the takeout container with the dragon steaks.
"Steak, nice and still warm too. Sure, go ahead, but heads up: Qrow's still in town for another week, so he'll be there too." Tai says, smirking at me at that last part.
"If he says anything, I'll cook my 'Looks Great Surprise' for him and bribe Ruby to say it's from her." I respond as I get out my scroll to message Neo and invite her over while thinking out, 'Status.'
